  • Purchasing a new HDD, need help a few details concerning iTunes and my music.

Alright, so I am currently using the hard drive that came with my computer when I got it way back when. I'm looking to upgrade ( For storage and performance improvements) and my question is this: What would be the best method to get my OS and files to the new HDD, while preserving the play count for my music as well as making it as smooth as possible with iTunes and my music?

If I've read that correctly, step 4 should be unnecessary because iTunes will know where your music is (the external HD).
Do step 4 if your library hasn't filled up with songs from your external HD by the time you come to step 4, so to speak.

I'd recommend staring over, Pondini has created an excellent guide on how to use Setup Assistant. I'd recommend begin reading Pondini Setup Assistant tips where he talks about "Second Chance." Assuming your Time Machine backup is sound the restore  should be very smooth.

  • Unable to Boot from New HDD ( HELP! )

    Hello,
Purchased a Seagate 500GB HDD in 2008. Just a few weeks ago, my Power Mac was no longer able to boot from it. It was the infinity gray load screen, then reboot and repeat x forever. Checked cable connections, Disk Utilities said it was 'Ok,' and even sent in the HDD to the manufacture and got a new HDD.
Now with the new HDD installed, it continues to do the same load screen of death. Oddly, when I boot from the original 80GB that came with the Power Mac, it can read the 500GB HDD without a problem.
Disk Utilities says its, 'Ok' still.
    What am I doing wrong?

    Depending on Disk Utility?
You need to give us a little better clue here. You say that you have gotten an exchange drive and you can't boot from that one. How did you get the data onto that drive? Was it a fresh system install or was it a restore from backup?
When the failed boot is occurring, do you get the spinning-gear progress indicator, or do you not get that far?
If you get the progress gear going, then a verbose boot (hold down cmd-V combination at power-up until you start to see "dumb terminal" output on the screen) can help diagnose the problem. If you are truly stalling during the boot, this will give you a good idea of where exactly it is stalling.

  • Help.New HDD recovery of factory default hanged

My Satellite M645-S110 Hard disk failed.I called Toshiba support and was advised to create a Recovery disk (4dvd) which I did and buy a new HDD. I bought and installed a new HDD (WD5000BPVT) and loaded the Recovery disk. It started the Recovery of Factory Default Software but failed on error in restoring PREINST10.WMM file. I tried this 2 more times and gave the same error. I assume the file was corrupted already when I created the recovery disk. So fortunately I have a set of recovery disc created when I first bought the laptop. This is what I have: 3 Recovery DVDs, 3 System Image dics, 1 System Repair disc, and 1 Windows Recovery Environment disc.
I loaded the no1 Recovery disc and the screen shows <Recovery of Factory Default Software> Preparing. Initiliazing the partition. Please wait...  so far I've been waiting for 4hours. Is there another way of recovering? Please help!

  • Old HDD died, new HDD doesn't have Thinkvantage. Help...

The HDD that came with my T61P died.
I purchased and installed a new HDD, but now the computer is missing a lot of drivers and software that I would like to have back on the computer (namely, ThinkVantage, fingerprint login, Touchpad Navigation).
I visited the T61P driver support page and downloaded all drivers for Vista-32 and installed them, but that did not solve all of my issues.
Things that still do now work:
1.) I don't know how to get ThinkVantage back on the computer (Hidden recovery partition).
2.) Fingerprint scanner still does not work.
3.) "Fn" keyboard Function buttons do not work
NOTE: This is after I have installed all applicable drivers.
I can't seem to figure out what to do next to resolve these issues.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi erdavis,
    Welcome to the Lenovo forum.
I think the easiest way for you to restore the recovery partition(s) is to re-install from a set of product recovery CDs. If you didn't create these before (suppose you didn't since you would probably have used them already) you should be able to order a set from Lenovo.
If you're not dead set on having the hdd recovery partitions, you could purchase a copy of Acronis True Image and use that instead of Rescue and Recovery for whole-drive backups to an external USB drive. I've found such backups and restores to be far faster (about 20 minutes, depends on the size of your disk of course) than using R&R. But the ThinkVantage button won't work on boot.
You're probably missing some drivers that are causing your other problems. The easy way to get them is to install and run ThinkVantage System Update; it will download and install all necessary drivers for your ThinkPad.
    Good luck!

Recently bought a new HDD, and encryped it and it no longer works...
Does anyone have any idea how or why?
I can't seem to press anything except repair and verify...

I followed what it said on another one of these discussion forums, by going onto the disk and changing it to encrypted, created a password then pressed erase, and it no longer will open at all, even on normal windows

  • Buying new HDD camcorder this week.  Suggestions please.

Buying new HDD and want one that works flawlessly with IMovie09. I'm no expert and don't want to have to jump through hoops in order to utilize it so I appreciate recommendations from anyone who has one and hasn't had any issues. Thanks in advance.

    Hia there!
I just bought the Sony HDR-XR 500 EXMOR- R, it works flawlessy with iMovie9 and you can also use TOAST 9 with bd -plugin to convert to .MOV for use in iMovie HD
(kinky twist? after making .MOV´s I have to re export to .mov with Q-time)!
With Toast u can make a bd on a dvd with aproximately 30+ minutes even more if you compress with x264.
Full hd in iDVD takes forever and becomes mpeg 2, but even that quality is supreme to ordinary SD.
    Unfortunately
I already regret this camcorder as Sony now have the same with flashmemory its a triffle ligther,
The best part of new corder is shooting in low light! It shoots daylight indoors
The corder was b%&##&" expensive though!
    Go with Leopard!

  • HT204406 My HDD crashed which held all of my music.  Can I recover the music from iTunes Match and download it back to a new HDD?

My HDD crashed and it contained all of the music from which iTunes and iMatch pulled files from.  Is there a way to recover the music from iTunes Match and download it back to my new HDD?

My computer HDD did not crash only my external drive with the music files.  I have not had to reinstall iTunes software.  The iTunes libarary is still complete and shows the complete list of music.  I have also ran Update iTunes Match and all of the music is on the cloud.
I cannot play the music from iTunes that is on the cloud, however the music I purchased from iTunes did download and it will plan from my computer.
The matched or uploaded music is what will not download and I can't find a command that allows me to download from Match.
Sorry if I'm not being very clear, however I do really appreciate your help and suggestions.

  • Replace HDD w/ Win 8 with new HDD w/Win 7

Just bought a HP Pavilion 17-e067cl Notebook PC from COSTCO. I want to remove the factory installed HDD with Win 8 and the factory load on it and replace it with a new HDD and load Win 7 on it
Is there anything in the BIOS that would prevent me from doing this? If so, can the settings be modded to accomplish my plan?
I intend to use an identical bare drive and load Win 7 on it.
Will a new, retail copy of Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64bit Full System Builder License and Media, GFC 020250 (1 machine, 1 license) be the correct version of the OS install. I want Home Prem.
My intention is to keep the original HDD with Win 8 in case warranty issues arise in the future or will the motherboard marriage be a problem?
    details for the laptop:

disclaimer: my last cert was on Win XP, so I am way behind the curve on Win 8.

    ****Disclaimer*****
HP doesn't recommend the installation of Windows 7 on a computer shipped with Windows 8, nor will it support the installation of Windows 7. HP will not provide Windows 7 drivers and suitable drivers may not be available for the hardware in the computer. Also, Windows 7 may not support some of the hardware or software features designed for the computer.
Make sure you create your HP Recovery Discs or USB Flash Recovery media before modifying or changing ANYTHING... even if you are going to swap in a new HDD.
    You will need to DISABLE "Secure Boot" and maybe ENABLE "Legacy Support" in the "BIOS Secure Boot cofiguration" on the settings page shown below, before you can attempt to install Windows 7;
    or
Some of the information below will vary depending on the HDD being partitioned as MBR or GPT, and/or booting the Windows 7 installation media as Legacy or UEFI.
Additionally, as the hard drive may be partitioned as GPT, you may have to boot the computer using the "UEFI - CD/DVD drive" or "UEFI - USB Flash drive" options in the "F9" boot menu. If "UEFI - CD/DVD drive",  "UEFI - USB Flash drive" or something to that effect doesn't exist in the boot menu, please post a screen shot and/or descibe the listed boot options.
I suggest using Windows 7 SP1 for the best intallation experience. If you need Windows SP1, please see "How to Install Windows 7 Without the Disc" to download and create your own Windows 7 SP1 disc. If the DVD refuses to boot as UEFI, you may need to use a USB Flash drive (may require DISABLING "Fast Boot" in the BIOS) as the installation media. Please download the Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool to create a Windows 7 SP1 USB Flash drive. Please note that some computers may not recognize a valid UEFI enabled USB Flash drive if it is formated as NTFS and may require a FAT32 formatted USB Flash drive. You should be able to make a FAT32 formatted Windows 7 installation USB Flash drive using Rufus, UNetbootin, Universal USB Installer, or WiNToBootic. I like Rufus, as it has options for "GPT partition scheme for UEFI computer" and "FAT32".
Most of the Windows 7 drivers from the HP Pavilion g7z-2100 CTO Notebook PC Drivers page should work on your computer, however you may need to source some drivers directly from the chipset manufacturers's support sites.
    Please post the Windows Device Manager's "Hardware Ids" for any additional missing or unknown devices as shown in the example below;

  • HDD on IdeaCentre A730 is bad. Can't clone it and I can't figure out how to restore to a new HDD

There is something wrong with the HDD, I'm assuming bad sectors. Every once in a while files won't read. I can still boot from the HDD, and all the files that are important seem to be fine. I bought a new HDD of the exact same specs to replace it, as I don't want to continue using it with the uncertainty that some file I save won't be there later.
I thought I could clone the drive, and I've tried a few different software packages, but they all fail when they can't read a certain section of the HDD. Making a recovery USB didn't work, as it seems to expect the original HDD in the machine (it needs a certain partition that's not there on the new HDD).
I'm willing to do a clean install but I don't see a way to do it? There aren't any windows 8 cd's, the recovery USB doesn't seem to work unless the original HDD is still there.
    Any help would be great!!

Hi baj, welcome to the forums,
sorry to read about your situation, you're probably right about the drive failing.  Hopefully you've backed up all your important files already; if you haven't I'd treat that as Nr. 1 priority.  When cloning I have always reverse cloned; new drive mounted in the system with the original attached through USB or whatever.  My preferred cloning software is Acronis.
Something that has worked for me when cloning a "suspect" drive with probable defective sectors is when cloning to select a sector for sector copy, (takes longer), but also select to ignore errors during the process.  Results have been mixed and running checkdisk on the new drive has helped on occasions.
Another "trick" which can sometimes influence / improve the process is to cool the original drive using coolbag ice pacs laid on top of the original drive in a plastc bag, so the drive doesn't get wet from the condensation, during the process.
If the clone completes and the drive is only half way useable your USB recovery drive may work, (can't be sure on this; never been in the situation so if you get that far let me know please)
Also there is the option to call support and request a set of recovery discs, which they may charge for, but you would definitely be able to install the new drive with them.

  • How i can install Mavericks on new HDD because my mac hdd broken

i have macbook pro A1286 hard disk damage . i buy new HDD and fix it on my mac , then how i can install Mavericks ?
i try many times but i cant finish this problem because i cant access to disk utilities or recovery mood because already the hdd is new&empty .

    Thanks

It's going to be impossible to install Mavericks unless you have a working Mavericks-USB-installer or an  "install OS X Mavericks.dmg" that YOU have downloaded from the App Store in the past.
You should use a Snow Leopard install DVD to install 10.6.8 Snow Leopard on your Mac. From there, you can use your  "install OS X Mavericks.dmg" to install Mavericks. If you don't have that, you can download and install Yosemite from the Mac App Store instead.
If you don't have either a Snow Leopard install DVD or a custom made Mavericks-installer-USB, you should call Apple and buy a Snow Leopard install DVD from them. They're still for sale.
The other option is to use another, still functioning, Mac and connect the two using a firewire cable. Then you can use Target Disk Mode to install Mavericks or Yosemite on your Mac http://support.apple.com/nl-nl/ht1661

  • From old website and iWeb to new HDD and iLife '08?

I wasn't sure which category to post this in but this may seem more relevant to my issue.
I put a new HDD in my mac some time ago and also upgraded to Leopard OS. I created a site using iWeb 6 which still have saved on my original HDD which i now have for external use. I just bought iLife '08 but yet to install it as I would like to update the website I was working on rather than start from scratch. The site mainly consists of photos and videos where I used iPhoto and Quicktime Pro a lot. I have also copied my iPhoto library onto my new HDD.
What is the best way for me to copy and continue updating the site I was working whilst upgrading to iLife '08 so I can enjoy the benefits it has and use the features to help me progress with the site?
    Any help much appreciated

Put the domain file in :
    ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/
    Open iWeb 06.
If you start using iWeb 08, it will find your domain file and updates it to iWeb 08.

  • New HDD, asking for pw, no option boot

    Hi all,
I'm trying to ready my 17" Core Duo iMac, 2006 model for sale. Along the way, Apple geniuses helped me diagnose a failed HDD, so I bought a new one, and replaced it yesterday. When I log in, it all looks great, until I get to a login window asking for a Name and Password! Under Mac OS X logo, the fine print says "freelance6osx" if that's any clue for anyone.
Now the plot thickens. I can put in various install disks, the one that came with the machine (10.4), and one that came with my newer machine (10.6), and hold down any number of keys, and the best I can get with either the C key or option key held during boot is a very brief flash of a ? folder before it happily goes on to boot from the new hdd and whatever "account" is there on it. (there are sometimes more, sometimes less, encouraging whirrrrs of the CD in the drive) No single user boot, no safe boot, no resetting PRAM is possible, try as I might. I am always sent back to the login in window, and obviously have no clue about either user name or pw. I'm royally stuck!!
    Any ideas?

Here's the solution: I had to use my Snow Leopard (purchased) install disk. The disks that came with this machine were for an older OS, and the one that was for another machine, while it was Snow Leopard, also was incompatible. But the SL install disk allowed me to boot from the disk, and I'm on my way.
