New help with "slide show"

Up until 2009 I used Final Cut Express to create "slide shows" using stills, video footage, alpha overlays, and animated transitions with a voice track and one or or more music and audio effects tracks.
In 2009 I retired and later bought a new iMac with Final Cut Pro X and Mountain Lion. "Just for fun."
Naturally, somebody important in my life has now asked me to produce a 5 minute show and I have less than two months to get it done using FCPX.
It needs to be NTSC SD because of the projection equipment available and I'd like to create the stills in Photoshop, just as I did in the "old days".
Can anybody point me toward some material that will help me make this transition to the new software, and rapidly? Unfortunately, the expectations are high.
Please?
Thanks.

OK as nobobdy's answered I'll recommend my book and online training. Go here

I'm confused by what you mean when you write "scene setting or standard timeline setting".  In version 11, I use "Expert" as my standad timeline setting.  The other is "Quick" and I have never used it.
The time for each pic starts with a default setting that can be changed.  Then each slide can be streched or shrunk with mouse control.

  • Help with Alert.show()

I need help with Alert.show(). My goal is to display a message box when a button is pressed.
    My program header:

  • New help with my mac air and airport extreme time capsule dont know how to save to time capsule and use as a external hd

new help with my mac air and airport extreme time capsule dont know how to save to time capsule and use as a external hd would like 2 store my home videos and pictures on the time machine (ONLY) as the MAC AIR has storage space limited space please help. THANK YOU.

See the info here about sharing or using the TC for data.
    Q3 http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
It is extremely important you realise.. the Time Capsule was never designed for this.
It is a backup target for Time Machine.. that is the software on the computer that does backups.. it has no direct connection to the Time Capsule.
It has no ability to back itself up.. unlike all other NAS in the market. It is therefore likely one day you will lose all your files unless you seriously work out how to backup.
The TC is slow to spin up the hard disk and fast to spin down. iTunes and iPhoto will continually lose connection to their respective libraries.
iPhoto in particular is easy to corrupt when you move photos over wireless into the library.. once corrupted all is corrupt. A single photo will ruin it all.. so backup is utterly essential.
Time Machine cannot do backups of network drives. ie the TC. You will need a different backup software like CCC. You will then need another target to backup to..

  • Final cut pro crashing with slide show photos

I am working with a large slide show - a few movie clips, but mostly still images from Aperture.  The photos were shot wtih a Nikon D300 in Raw, not that I think that matters much at all.
Becasue this is a slide show I am working wth short durations for the images - usually 3:14.  Most of the transitions are simply cross dissolve, but some are more complex.
I am getting again and again crashes - or the spinning color circle going to oblivion and requiring a Force Quit.
Either can happen when adding new material, moving arround existing material, or trying to reset durations, add text, different transitions, or working wth the Ken Burns options.  Sometimes it also happens when resizing the time line zoom level.   This marvelous feature seems the most consistent way of trashing the application so I tend to leave it alone.
I may be able to work for an hour or only a few minutes.  Sometimes deleting and re-adding an image seems to help, but that may not be true - most of the time it's just simply random.   The system has 14 Gig Ram and I am using iCleanMemory now to see how much is in play.  A crash / freeze may occur with a lot or a little - usually looks like I have about 8.9 Gig in play for normal use of Final Cut and no clear change when it crashes / freezes.
Clearly the images are compatible - they are from Aperture and there is no consistency in always the same image being the issue.
Below is the first part of the error report dump.
Hoping someone has an idea for how to overcome this.
    Appreciate the thoughts.
    Cheers -
    Dan

Well, I filmed many of those videos in HDV (the 2x2 wall, the 5x5 wall and some of the 10x10 wall). Plus I converted the whole project to HDV because it is the way I displayed it (thru camera to Plasma TV's) and I wanted the HD space to work with and since part of my videos were HDV I figured that would be best.
Of course the DV footage is not so good quality, but when made very small for that big screen it looks fine I think. Yeah the AIC codec is great but it takes 4 times as much room, but you think that would work better hey?
I just don't want Final Cut crashing like that. I don't care if it can't play it back in real time or it takes 10 seconds to display 1 frame.
I have not used motion....would it work for what I did. Remember I used over 100 discreet video streams I had. I don't want to replicate the same layer...you get the drift.
Did you see it in youtubes HD? What did you think of the quality?

  • Need help with gallery showing .jpg AND .swf

    Hi all,
I have an image gallery that loads images and swf-files from an XML-file. The .jpg's load and display just fine, but the .swf files won't show. The data is loaded though. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I'm sorry, you're right! Didn't intend to be lazy...
This line loads the image in the loader 'slideLoader'. This seems to work fine with image files (.jpg), but .swf files are ignored. Is it possible to load both .jpg AND .swf files in a loader, or do I have to use some other method for this?
    slideLoader.load(new URLRequest(unesc_xmlSlideshow..image[intCurrentSlide].@src));
    Thanks again,

  • IWeb 08 blogging with slide shows

    Help!
I am using iWeb 08 in a fairly generic way. After seeing what her sisters have all been able to accomplish with blog sites such as blogger.com she wants to be able to include a slide show in her blogs. 2 questions:
    1. I have figured out how to export photos from iPhoto to quicktime. It creates a simple but usable slideshow in .mov format. I then open iWeb, click on the "entries" screen, create a new blow, then drag/insert the quicktime movie into the "placeholder" image to replace it in the blog. The problem is that when i go to my website, which opens up to the home page that shows all of the recent blogs with the most recent one first, the embedded quicktime file doesnt play. It only shows the first frame. When i click on it, it takes me a page with just that one blog on it, and then the mov file works, and i get my slideshow. What do i need to do make the .mov slideshow work in the home page. My wife wants the slideshow(quicktime movie) to work on the main page...).
    2. Second question. The quicktime slideshow is pretty generic. Sites like Picturetrail let you create pretty cool slideshows (flash files i believe) and then embed the html in your own blogsite ie blogger.com etc. I played around with embedding the html in iWeb and couldn't get it to work? A) can i embed a flash html in an iWeb blog, and B) will have the same problem of it not working on the homepage screen..
Sorry for the long post. Huge brownie points if i can get it to work, not to mention less grief for switching to a Mac
    Thanks for your help!

I have batch renamed all my assets, deleted all my slideshow thumb nails and replaced them so none of the images in my slide show have the same name as other assets anymore. I am sure this is what caused the problem.  I am about to reupload my website, so you won't be able to see the problem anymore (I sincerely hope).
The problem wasn't always reproducible. To be able to reproduce the bug you need 10 different slideshows (all with images called page_1.jpg, page_2.jpg etc with more than 50 pages in some of the galleries, and then you have to upload the slideshows, make changes to the website, upload again, then make more changes to the website, then go to all the galleries one at a time with the thumbnails visable then uncheck the show thumbnails box for all the different slideshows and upload again.

  • Error message in iDVD with Slide show from iPhoto 09

I have about 130 photos in a slide show with music in iPhoto 09. The slide show settings are for the whole slide show are Ken Burns effect, each slide about 8.1 seconds, random transitions, and music fit to the slide show..I Went to "Share" Send to DVD.
In DVD, I type in a title and a photo in the drop zone, then I chose as a Burn as a Disc Image. It does some encoding and then a I get an error message when it finishes that says " There was an error during the rendering of the menus/slideshows. The burning process has been canceled".. This basically tells me Nothing!!
What is wrong? How can I fix this? Using OS 10.5.7 intel dual core. iMac desktop.
Previously, I had successfully created a DVD of this same slide show, made one DVD, but after seeing in on my DVD player, I tried to fix some things, like fitting the music to the slide show, but that is about all. Frustrated!!
    Any help will be appreciated....Thanks.

This sounds more like an iDVD issue than an iPhoto one. I would post on the iDVD forum here:

  • I have the most horrible muse bug ever with slide shows mixing images up

Hi there.  I'm making a comic. I uploaded multiple episodes of the comic - each to it's own slideshow in adobe muse.  However the pages in the various slideshows are mixing up with my other slideshows.  At first I thought it was just a caching problem in preview mode of muse because after uploading all looked okay and my on-line website looked perfect.  However suddenly today several of the comics have the wrong images in them. I did nothing in the assets window.  It was all working (at least on line where it counts) until now.  this is a disaster.  My poor website.
I uploaded it to my own website but if anyone wants to see I can also upload to BC.
this problem appeared again (but on upload as well today) after I switched off the thumbnails.  maybe that is a clue as it was working until then (at least online).
Please help me - I am desperate.  And no, I do not wish to rename all the pages in my comic from page 1.jpg to page 1_comic4.jpg etc to give each image (page of my comic) a unique name.  I would have thought I could have same name assets that are different images.  To rename all my images and put them back into muse would be so much work it would probably be easier for me just to go back to iweb and wait for easyweb to come out.

I have batch renamed all my assets, deleted all my slideshow thumb nails and replaced them so none of the images in my slide show have the same name as other assets anymore. I've been lurking in the iMovie discussions for a couple of months now, and I'm trying to absorb the knowledge of the community. I'm also working my way through "The Missing Manual" which is invaluable. I have two projects in mind, so I'm starting two threads to ask for advice.
First is my "Slide Show" project. I have around two thousand jpeg pictures from my daughter's wedding, and I'd like to put together a DVD of the wedding. This sounds fairly straightforward to me, but I'd like your advice on my plan.
The project starts with an outline on paper of the structure of the project - starting with David Pogue's "22 Shots for Your Wedding Video" from the Missing Manual.
Question 1: I'm thinking of a 20 to 30 minute show, with each slide on screen for 3 to 4 seconds, and a simple cross dissolve between most pictures - maybe a Ken Burns Effect thrown in as a transition between sections, say between the church and the reception. Is this a reasonable length and plan?
Question 2: I'm thinking of using a series of approximately one-minute music clips for the sound. Many years ago, in a different forum, I read a comment that the sound track was more difficult than the video, so I was thinking of putting the music together first, and laying the pictures over it. I'm planning to use Amadeus II to build the audio track, with fades from song to song. Then maybe just import the 20 or 30-minute sound track into iMovie and fit the video by adjusting each picture's duration. Is this a reasonable plan? Would I be better off to feed iMovie smaller chunks at a time?
Question 3: With no disrespect to iPhoto, I've grown up using Graphic Converter and so I plan to use it to shuffle through the 2000 pictures, sort and select those I want to use, and then crop them to 720 x 528 (or 1.364:1) for use without the Ken Burns effect. I realize that part of the elegance of iMovie is it's integration with the i-Suite, but is there any other downside to this plan?
Question 4: I also understand that I do not want to let iMovie render my stills, but to let iDVD do it. To do this, I would just quit my project without letting iMovie render it, and then open it in iDVD, correct?
Sorry for the length of this post - I've been thinking a lot about this project, but it's time to start doing rather than just thinking!
    Thanks,
    Joe

    Hi Joe
Q1: About 300 to 600 slides sounds OK when there is a line in the story and
some nice music also will make it easier to appreciate.
Q2: I would import the 300 to 600 photos I need and work with them. Putting in
the Music first is the way I think animatours usually do it. I would at least.
Q3: I would Create a new folder "Photos" and with GraphicConverter™ convert
them to high quality jpegs and into the new folder. I wouldn't do anything about
size but let iMovie do it's job. If some photos showes up flickerings premiary
in thin lines. (You need to connect Your miniDV camera to Your Mac and to
a TV-set to be able to judg final quality). Then I would manually open each of
them in PhotShop and add a little "Gaussian blurr" to them.
Of course crop to right size first.
I-sight - I have no experience of it - sorry.
Q4: I do it another way.
    a) Close iMovie
    b) find the project icon/folder
    c) Ctrl-click on it and Show package.
    d) in this there are a folder -> Shared Movies -> iDVD
    e) in this there is a QT movie nnnnnnn.mov
    - You can test this with QT-player to see that it is OK -
START A NEW iDVD project - so that old material will not interfere.
    f) drop this into an open theme in iDVD (just inside the edge of the
window) and save it as a desktop image
(if iDVD prior HD/5 You have to add a hack to make this possibly
    named HPfurz and install it)
Test this with Apple DVD-player - OK then burn it with iDVD
or Toast if You have and don’t want to re-code the movie.
(in iDVD 5 You can drop Your iMovie project icon directly into a theme window)

  • Music Trouble with Slide Show

I have used the slide show many times and have always had success with adding music from iTunes easily.
I have recently upgraded with the software update and included in that update was an iTunes update. I also updated the iPhoto recently, since creating the last slide show.
Today I have been trying to create a new slide show and add some music that I added to iTunes specifically for the slide show. All I get is a spinning disk and no response in iPhoto. The computer is not 'frozen' and I can access and use other applications while the disk spins in iPhoto, but iPhoto is stalled. I have had to force quit several times.
Any ideas? The iPhoto is 4.0.3 and the iTunes is 5.0.1. I am running on an eMac from last year.
    Thanks.

It may mean that there's another preference file in your User Preferences folder that is incompatible with iPhoto. I ran across this troubleshooting method a while back.
    Trouble Shooting Preferences
Go to HD/Users/Your_name/Library. Move the Prefs folder (in its entirety) to the desktop. Start iPhoto. Determine if problem is fixed.
If the problem IS fixed, then go to the new Prefs folder that the OS will have created and open it up. Except for those items that are obviously not related, move the contents to the old Prefs folder on the desktop, replacing what had been there. When in doubt, move the item. The worst thing that can happen is a harmless "alert" message. Then, trash what remains of the new folder. Finally, move the old (but modified) Prefs folder back to the library.
If the problem is NOT fixed, trash the new Prefs folder and move the old one back to its original location.
Otherwise you might want to reinstall the 10.3.9 COMBO updater followed by a permissions repair and reinstall iPhoto 4 from scratch and update it. If you do reinstall V4 you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder.

  • Voice narration with slide shows?

When I was a kid we loved having slide shows of the family vacations. Since 1991 I've tried to find a way for my dad to record a narration to go with scanned slides. Hypercard was too hard to use. Photoshop and iPhoto allow attaching a little text to the photos but no voice (as far as I can figure out). I just spent $300 on iView MediaPro, which is supposed to be iPhoto on steroids. My dad and I sent in 50 slides to a scanning lab, then we sat down and recorded 30 seconds of narration with each slide. The good news is that it works. We can run a slide show with his narration. Someday his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, etc. will enjoy it. The bad news is that iView MediaPro is frustrating to use. Even I had problems getting it to do what I wanted. There was no way that my 79-year-old father could have done this himself. iView MediaPro looks like it was designed for Windows, badly, then ported over to the Mac. It allows only 30 seconds narration per slide. The slides can be exported to Quicktime as a movie -- without the voice narration. So to run our slide show you have to have iView MediaPro. That's $300 each for my brothers. Is there a better way to do this? I can't believe that I'm the only person who wants a narrated slide show. Last weekend at a party a friend showed his slides from his family's European vacation. Everyone was asking questions and oohing and aahing and making comments. Wouldn't it be nice to record all this and attach the sound to each slide? His only grandchild is just a baby, but in 40 years she'd be happy to watch his slide show.

    Thomas:
I've become intrigued with you narrated slideshow idea and was giving it some thought last night. Since I don't have a microphone to test out my theory I'll just post it here for your consideration. In creating a slideshow that your relatives can view and listen to with the Reader application I believe you'll have to burn to the disc the original image files and the associated audio files along with the catalog file. That's because the catalog file will only contain thumbnails of the images and links to the originals and the audio files. They won't be able to play with the catalog file alone. Here's what I believe you're work flow will have to be like:
1 - assemble the files for the slideshow into the same physical folder.
2 - when making the narration make sure the audio files are saved to the same folder if at all possible (I don't know how that works).
3 - Now when you ready to burn the disc with the files, put the disc in and copy (Option-Drag to insure you're copying and not just getting aliases) the slideshow file folder, audio files and the catalog file to the CD. I'd also include the Reader for both Mac and PC.
4 - before burning, open the copy of the catalog file that's on the CD to be burned and reset the paths to all of the files. (There will be red tag associated with the folder icon for that folder in the Catalog Folder pane. Open the mini menu at the right and select "Reset Folder Path".
5 - once the paths are reset close iView and open the Reader to make sure all is well.
6 - now burn the disc.
I wish I had a microphone to test this out because it is intriguing. You can download the demo of iView and run a test on the process before committing to the purchase. If and when you do, post to the iView user forum. Good luck.

  • Action Script Newbie has problem with Slide Show Pro

    Hi,
here is a demo page -
    http://www.libertypromotions.com/asptest/newsite/cars/product_page.htm.
The flash gallery in the top left is my problem child. I am
using Slide Show pro to display my images but I want to add some
external buttons that will switch albums when you click them (all
images are in there own album, giving me the Grid effect when you
click see all) I have asked for help on how to do this on their
forums, but they are useless (so far) so I came here. Below is the
code SSP provides for external Next/Previous buttons that switch
    images inside albums.
I am hoping someone here knows SSP well enough to help me
    with this.
    Thanks in advance.
