New HH5 and Wireless Speed

Hello All
Just bought a HH5 and set it up last night.  The wired connections seem fine and I'm connecting at expected speeds of around 66Mbps down and 17.5 up.  However, the wireless speed is poor and giving me only 12Mbps on my Iphone 5 sat right next to the Homehub.  I've tried changing to a fixed channel on 5GHz frequency but to no avail.  Also, for some strange reason the menu in the HH5 states Homehub 4.  I was expecting a firmware update to take place overnight but this didn't happen. So can anyone tell me:
1. Is there a way to improve the wireless speed?
2. When do firmware upgrades take place?
3. Will a firmware upgrade fix the wireless/hub homepage?
Thank you.

I suspect you might have been sold a HH4 either in error or by design! As to the wireless speeds there are many, many things that can affect this that BT will only accept wired speeds as being the true speed.  You could be using the HH close to a TV - that has been known to affect wireless speed, microwave ovens (when switched on) can affect wireless speeds. Have you switched off smart wireless on the hub (or something like that). It only uses 3 set frequencies and it could be trying to find the best of a bad bunch of frequencies and failing. Switch it off and select something like channel 13 for the 2.4 GHz band and see if that makes a difference.
Also search this forum for topics such as "slow wireless speeds" and you will find lots of advice on how to try and overcome it.
Mistakes and embarrasing goofs in e-mails are only discovered when you've sent them!

  • HH5 and Wireless Printer

Just had my HH5 delivered, all up and running in terms of the access to the web, email client, and wireless devices such as TV and Ipads etc but I cannot get my wireless printer to work.
The printer can see and link to the hub, the printer shows up in the printer section of the network on the BB Desktop help screen, but I can't seem to see the printer in the Wireless device list under the Hub admin application.
I have been trying all sorts of people to help who are telling me all sorts of issues that I have done and still no success, I don't particularly want to pay £30 for a "tech expect" to show me a box that I haven't ticked or unticked or something like this which really should only be a 2 minute fix.
My HH4 and printe worked fine. ANy ideas anyone?

It is linking to a 169.254....... Ip address, the printer seems to be fine in connecting to the actual hub, just the bit after that doesn't seem to work.
I will try your suggestions when I get home this evening and let you know how I get on, many thanks
    Ben
That is not a valid home hub address, its a default local address, issued when the printer cannot get a valid IP address from the home hub, due to a connection failure.
It will not work with this configuaration.
Did you delete the old wireless connection from the printers setup, and then rescanned for the new hub, and entered the new wireless key?

  • Brand new Imac and wireless is saying no hardware installed? really confused as it was working fine yesterday, brand new Imac and wireless is saying no hardware installed? really confused as it was working fine yesterday

Hi Guys, I juts bought a new Imac and jad it connected to my wireless router yesterday but now when i click on the wireless button on the top screen, it comes up saing wireless hardware not installed, have any of you had this problem? Thanks Tracey

You can quickly see if there is a problem in reporting the AirPort card by going to the apple in the upper left corner, About This Mac, More Info, System report and look at the information on Hardware and the AirPort report...make sure it is not indicating a fault.
If all looks ok, try removing the network information and reentering it and see if the AirPort responds.

  • How do I tell the printer the new SSID and wireless key?

    Hi,
I have a HP Laserjet Pro Color MFP M175nw and it works beautifully. However, today I replaced my wireless router and thus have a new SSID and key. I cannot figure out how to tell the printer the new router info - it must be very simple. Please help!!!

    Hi @wirelessfun,
I understand that you need the printer setup on the new router. I can help you with this.
Restore the printer's network defaults first.
    Touch the Setup button. (wrench)
    Select Network Setup Menu.
    Then select Restore Defaults.
Print out a configuration report to make sure the IP address is 0.0.0.0.
    Printing a Configuration Report.
Select Method one under the operating system.
Follow these steps to setup the wireless:
On the printer touch the setup button, (wrench) then select network setup menu, select wireless menu, select wireless direct and turn it on.
On the computer, in the bottom right corner click on the wireless icon and select the printer from the list to connect to. Then open Internet Explorer and type in the IP address (192.168.223.1) for the printer in the address bar.
This will load the embedded web server for the printer.
Select the networking tab, wireless on the left hand side.
Fill out all your network information, select infrastructure, select your network name, put in password and type of encryption. Apply settings.
Click on the wireless icon and connect back to your network name.
Print out a configuration report to make sure the IP address is valid. (192... or 10....)
Run the installation again or run the add printer wizard from the devices and printers.
    Test the printer.
Let me know how this goes for you!
    Have a great day.
    Thank You.

  • Gigabit wire speed and wireless speed

I'd like to hardwire the gigabit ethernet ports on my Extreme to my TV and game console. Assuming the TV and game console support gigabit, will speeds on the gigabit wired network be inhibited by connecting older (802.11g) laptops to the 802.11n wireless network? I know that speeds are limited by the slowest device connected to the network, but don't know if that extends to wireless devices as well.
    Thanks for any suggestions,
    Ian

    Ian,
The whole thing is pretty much a moot point if you are connecting your network to the Internet. Even "g" wireless speeds are 54 Mbps. That's probably quite a bit faster than your Internet connection speed with your provider, correct?
The Internet connection is almost always a severe "choke" point on any home network. 100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps connections won't matter much if the devices have an Internet connection, as is likely with your TV, Game Console, Computers, etc.

  • Need INput and Feedback ON new Macbook and Wireless-NESS

greetings all My sister just bought a macbook brand new from best buy...
she has SBC Global high SPEED DSL at home, via a ethernet modem....connected to her PC..
    Macbook's are wireless capable..
so how can we make this happen?
    1. what does she need to get Wifi access on her macbook? what do I need routers, Hubs, switches or what?
    2. if additional H/W needed, can you make recommendations on makes, models and pricing?
    3. Is there such a thing where your ISP gives you a modem that is wireless capable? if so how can I get one..
    THANK YOU KINDLY YALL
    oNe

You need a wireless router. Some ISPs will provide them to you, but some of the provided hardware really stinks. You can consider several manufacturers. Linksys is good, Apple AirPort Extreme decent and much easier to configure. Get an "N" speed router with a built in gigabit switch.

  • Problems with new macbook and wireless internet!!

i just bought a new macbook yesterday and cannot connect to my wireless network. i have it unlocked and my old ibook g4 and my palm connect just fine to it but this macbook is saying the network requires a password. every other computer just automatically connects and has perfect internet access with no password. why is this happening and is there anything i can do????

Try simply hitting the "enter" key. that is entering no password. this has worked for me.

  • How can i use my old airport express with my new imac and wireless hp print

i just bought my first imac (intel) and a wireless hp printer. i now realize that a wireless connection between my imac and my printer needs a router.
i have an airport express base station, which is a few years old. I can't find my documentation, so i don't know its specifications.
how can i find out the specs of the airport express i have and whether i can use it now? it says that it is model a1084 100-240v~ 0.2a 50-60 hz.
does that tell any knowledgeable people out there about the specs? can i search the apple website by serial number and find the specs?

  • AC1600 Slow Wired And Wireless Speed

    Hello,
I just purchase a smart WiFi router model AC1600. The speed off my router is 3 times as slow as what is coming from my MTA from the cable company. I reinstall my firmware and rebooted it several times, but the best I can get is 6 Mbps downstream while I am getting between 22-30 Mbps downstream off my cable MTA without the router. I love the security the AC1600 provide and would love to keep it, but I hate my speed I am getting from it...any advice will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

  • I got a new modem and imac says connected with the airport, but cant get a web page to come up on either safari or firefox

I started having internet problems with all my devices in the house, ipod, imac, pc laptop, tablets, etc... found out after being on the phone with comcast for hours, they determined my modem that they supply was bad. So I have the new modem now and very simple to install it and get everything working. However, I cannot get online with a web browser of any sort on my imac. which had no issues before.
All my devices in the house work perfectly now with the new modem and my speeds are great, and even the imac (with the airporter) states it is connected. but I cant do anything pertaining to the internet. I have spent hours on the tech line with comcast and they cant seem to find the issue and said it is with my Imac, even though it was working fine before.
Does anyone have any ideas, is there simply something I'm missing, please help. As I stated before, everything else that we own works great and has great connection. and the Imac states it is connected, but mail, internet, non of that works...??????

  • New Mac Mini - wireless keyboard issue

I bought a new mini and wireless keyboard and mouse. The mouse works but the keyboard is not being recognized. Any help? It is a new mini so I cannot get onto the preferences and I do not have another mac keyboard.

Scrounged a Microsoft USB mouse and plugged into Mac Mini. Allowed me to click through to new pane telling me I had no keyboard connected, please connect one. Well, that's progress.
Took a number of attempts. Eventually it saw and displayed my KB's Bluetooth ID, but then failed. It was almost "reluctant," like it was trying to get out of work. This is not behavior I am used to from non-sentient digital equipment. Unless... never mind.
With a functioning KB and mouse I finally was able to open Lion and System Preferences and discover the DEFAULT trackpad settings DISABLED clicks! I assume Apple has a method to what seems madness. Otherwise those Stuxnet saboteurs have been moonlighting in Cupertino to devise an out-of-the-box fail.
I didn't start out an Apple fanboy but since 2007 their products have turned me into one. Yet I was so disappointed today I planned to return the Mac Mini, KB and Magic Trackpad tomorrow. My Apple Store is nearby. I kinda knew that USB end run would work, but I was insulted they made me resort to such a kludge.
I cannot imagine why that initial Bluetooth pairing procedure hassle remains without some kind of service bulletin addressing known problems. So many people have commented on it over these boards. I flatter myself to conclude Apple does so many other things right that once in a while things get past them.
As usual, now that I command Lion OSX on an HDTV from the couch, I'll be keeping this Mac Mini as part of my home's Apple suite, crossing my fingers against Bluetooth issues.

  • Verizon's new FiOS GigE Wireless N Router and High Speed Internet

So I got a deal in the mail to get an upgrade to [50/25] Mbps Internet (I currently have [15/5]...when I was reviewing it on line this message came up...
Verizon will provide up to [50/25] Mbps Internet with a wired connection. If you use your Internet primarily for wireless or WiFi connections, you have the option to upgrade to Verizon's new FiOS GigE Wireless N Router which will maximize your speed delivered through your wireless connection.
Upon completion of your order, you'll be provided with information for purchasing a router at Verizon's online equipment and accessories store.
I am VERY interested in getting super fast internet...my current internet is really good but it wouldnt hurt to bump it up.  I have several devices using internet in the home...most of them wireless (including my PS3).  I currently use a Verizon Actiontec router.
So here is my question...do I really need to get the above router to take advantage of that [50/25]? Also one other thing...My house is fairly large and I would really like to have two routers...is it possible to use two routers or a setup to have one upstairs and another downstairs?
Thanks in advance for the answers!
    -Jest

There are a lot of variables that affect wireless range.
Walls, interference, other networks in the area, etc.
You don't indicate which older Actiontec you have.
Wireless capabilities also vary by Actiontec hardware revision (A,C,D,E,F,G,I).
In general, wireless range for 802.11n is somewhat less than 802.11g, even though the bandwidth is higher.
This is especially true on the 5Ghz band (which the latest Actiontec doesn;t support).
If you only need another 10 feet, you could try moving the router, or replacing the antenna with a high gain antenna.

  • HH5 Wireless Speed

Setup the new HH5 today and it seems a bit of a shambles in terms of wireless speed. Fine if you are sat next to the router, butas i have this in my office so i can wire into work but go downstairs and these are the results:
    http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/4405921082
Now before someone tells me it's just my house, the HH3 gave me a fairly constant 30mb wireless downstairs. Also the upload speed confuses me no end there as that's probably higher than on the HH3.
    Any help?

Have you tried separating the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz frequencies? You can do this by turning of the sync for both frequencies and adding 5Ghz on the end of the SSID for the 5Ghz SSID.

  • Getting a new computer and want to set up the old one for wireless.

I am getting a new G5 and have a few questions about wireless networking.
First off, I presently have a G4 Dual 400, wired to a Netgear wireless G router. My laptop (G4 Titanium) and my iPhone will not connect to wi-fi at the furthest location in my house. I can get 1 bar. If I move to the next room I can get some times 2 bars. The router is located on the third floor of our house. It is the only place the cable comes in for the internet. I cannot change it's location.
If I upgrade to the Air Port Extreme. (I have a 100 iPhone credit) can I expect a big improvement in coverage? I am not so concerned about speed.
Secondly, I am giving the G4 to the kids. It will be located in the farthest room from the Air Port Extreme as well.
I have looked at Sonet's PCI Card $100.00 and this, on Ebay, http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=150164457261&ssPageName= STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=005. Has anyone had any experience with either? Also seen on ebay is a USB antenna, a little deal, looks like a flash drive that plugs in.
    Any thoughts appreciated.

    For future reference,
If you don't know, you usually have to be hard-wired (ethernet cable) to the router to change anything. Only for changes .
I doubt that you will get a better signal as the FCC standard is so many watts max. (unless you hack it, but who wants to sleep next to a microwave?)
BUT, you can use a repeater. You just plug it into an electical outlet say, on the second floor and it should be able to repeat the signal from there. I don't think the older Base Stations could do it so i'm not sure about the new ones. But you can get one from say, Lynksys, Netgear, Belkin, etc. and they are a bit cheaper too. I think their called Bridges.
I would definatly find out before you buy the Airport tho. AulfulI expensive door stop if it won't work. I think i remember someone using the Express" (?) for the same thing but it was for streaming music to the stereo, I don't think it is "G" rated tho so it would slow every thing down.
By the way Max bars, (nearest), you can play Quake, Unreal, etc, but under 1 bar, (farthest), you might be able to play chess.
Unless you have a USB-2 port your better off with a Firewire dongle. They didn't have USB-2 on the earlier Laptops. But the Firewire ones are hard to find. I plan on getting one for the wifes G3 Ibook.
What ever you get, remember, you want at LEAST what your DSL/Cable router is."G" router, "G" cards, bridges, etc. If anything make sure they are backwards compatible to A-B-G so if you get a "good deal" on a "whatever" and it's not as fast as the network because it's locked out then it's not a good deal if you can't use it. If you can afford it, go with the next higher rating as in "N" (or at least 5 minutes ago) but make sure it's backwards useable so when you upgrade to another 'puter etc, one less item to upgrade....

  • Slow wireless speed with new iMac Intel- problem with 802.11g?

There IS a problem with the new Intel Mac, I have tried both the Intel iMac and the new Intel Mac mini and they both have the same problem with slow wireless speed (or rather it variates, if I do a ping to another computer on the network the speed goes from < 1 ms up to 1000 ms and then down to < 1 ms and so on). The older mac minis, my Linux boxes and my Windows PCs don´t have that problem. I have also read reports on the net and it appears that most users experiencing this problem have wireless card firmware version 101.3 (3.120.28.3) . A possible "fix" is to change to 802.11b on the router and then it works. No speed fluctuations and a stabile network! I know it is a bad solution, I would prefer to use 802.11g and get the speed. However I think this points to a problem with the drivers regarding 802.11g. I am starting up a new thread on this and those of you with problems, please try to switch to 802.11b and if it works let us make Apple aware of this.
