New-host-5 under "shared" in finder side bar after Lion update

Just upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion.
Intermittently I am now seeing "new-host-5" in the SHARED section of the side bar of a finder window. Switching WiFi off and back on makes it disappear and not come back.
Any help on tracking this down is much appreciated.
Thanks, C

Just did a little more digging and found that the IP address for "new-host-5" is the same as the one for my iMac, who is also on the network. Curiously enough the machine also shows up in the SHARED section with it's real name. Very puzzeling!

  • Can't see 'Shared' in Finder Side Bar

I managed to connect both my iMacs on my first networking attempt a couple of weeks ago. However at sometime between then and now the Shared option has disappeared from the Finder Sidebar on both macs. I've verified that both macs have all three view options checked under Finder Preferences, but this makes no difference. I've tried logging out and in but no joy. This is driving me nuts. Any help gratefully received.

Right, both problems now resolved thanks to the very helpful (and patient) man at Apple.
    1. A quick scroll through the forums tells me I'm not the first person to notice that sometimes the Shared menu disappears form the Sidebar in Finder. Apparently the reason this sometimes happens is that this is a 'dynamic' menu which means that if the computer cannot find a shared network, the menu will not be visible. It is still there, just not visible.
    2. And the reason that neither computers could find each other, despite the fact that they could both independently find the same router and gain access to the internet is.....we still don't know. It was only after 60 minutes of box ticking and Network tests and various Pings the man at Apple asked me the golden question favoured by all IT help desks...'Have you tried turning it (the router) off and on again?' 60 seconds later normal service was resumed...
Thanks very much for your various attempts to help this knuckle-dragging neanderthal find a solution. Next time I'll know to reach for the off switch!

  • Standard 9, missing EDIT PDF PORTFOLIO side bar after recent update

I can't find the place to enable the view of the "EDIT PDF PORTFOLIO" sidebar.
I've always had it, but Acrobat updated recently, and it's gone.

    That can't be correct.
I've had the function all along until a recent update.
In addition, I currently can still create and manipulate files within a portfolio.
I lost a functionality of changing order of contents, and need that sidebar to change the layout.

  • Photo stream added to side bar but not updating

I've added Photo Stream to the Finder Side Bar of OSX Mavericks through the Smart Folder Saved Search option.
However, the photo stream in the Finder Side Bar is not updating with new pictures taken from my iPhone.
Would anyone have a solution possibly to allow the photo stream to update and be shown in the Finder?

Hmmm... not sure about PC but I did have this same problem while syncing to my MAC... the cause was that my contacts sync was conflicting with other sync data... Once I changed settings for Mobile Me with contacts and address book it was resolved...
For PC... my only guess would be that a program that is told to sync contacts doesn't allow or is conflicting with the assigned photo you've set on iPhone...

  • Strange Items Under Shared Devices In Finder Side Bar

I have file sharing on for both my lap top and imac. Each shows up under Shared in the finder side bar. And I am able to connect to either one if I click on them. However two other devices show up as well. These two devices do not exist. When I use "Get Info" for them it indicates they are PC servers. I don't have any such thing. One of the items actually has a hyphenated version of my base station name. If I click on that one it says "connection failed". If I click on the other one it says "connected as guest" but nothing shows up in the window.
Is there anyway to delete these items/devices or at least keep them from showing up? And why are they showing at all?

I appreciate you taking the time to look. My 3 macs are now displaying only other Leopard computers. The strange ones have disappeared. One strange listing did look like my airport express base station. I have a 2nd express airport which servers to play my itunes. I, also, have two PCs on a Linksys wireless network and a wireless printer on my airport network.
Have no idea why the strange additions have disappeared. In an attempt to get them to disappear, I did shut down & restart each computer (Macs & PCs), unplugged and replugged both express airports, turned off then on the printer, and unplugged and replugged the linksys wireless router connected to my DSL modem. My goal was to isolate the equipment causing the strange listings. No luck. Could only modify the strange listing by totally taking down the wireless network at the DSL modem. Then, after returning from working at a client's; everything looked normal. ?????

  • Getting Rid of Airport Extremes under Shared Devices in Finder Side Bar

In the Finder side bar, under Shared, I see a nice list of all the computers on my local network.
Unfortunately, I also see my Airport Extremes (I have two) and they show up as type "PC Server". How can I fix this problem either by not having the Airport Extremes show up while keeping the rest of my computers showing up correctly or (ii) having the finder understand that these are Airport Extremes and not try to connect to them and show the wrong icon.
    Thanks,
    Robert

  • Multiple macs showing under Shared in Finder

    Hi,
Running Yosemite 10.10 on an iMac 27".
Noticed that I have 19 Pete's iMac (#) showing under Shared in the Finder as per screen shot below.  I recall this happening a few OS X versions ago but what's the cause.  Is it anything to do with my ISP assigning and changing IP addresses regularly?
    Does this matter at all.
    All thoughts appreciated.
    Pete

I had the same problem on my home network with my MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012).
My home network has an Airport express attached to the cable modem creating the wireless network and an Airport extreme on the other end of the house extending the network. On the network are two Apple TVs, an iMac, my MacBook Pro, a TIVO, and 3 iPhones.
For me the solution involved two steps: first, turning off "Wake for Wi-Fi network access" and "enable Power Nap when plugged into a power adapter" under the Power Adapter Tab of Energy Saver in System Preferences. Next I turned off all the computers on the network, unplugged each Apple TV, and unplugged the airports. I turned back on the airports followed by the Apple TVs and then the computers.
The downside is that back to my mac and find my mac will not work when the macbook is asleep in this configuration.
I worked with Apple support and the case was escalated. They called me back to tell me there was not a fix.
Initially we had turned off "Wake for Wi-Fi network access" and restarted the Airport Express and that made the MacBook Pro stop renaming itself and eliminated all but one of the phantom computers under Shared in the Finder side bar (number 9). But, the remaining phantom computer was driving me nuts.
I found a thread on Reddit that noted:
The problem is because of a bug between Yosemite and sleep servers. These servers reside in Apple TVs and Airports and act as a proxy for a sleeping machine on Wi-Fi. For now the only fix seems to be:
System Preferences --> Energy Saver, and UNTICK "Wake for network access".
Shut down your computer and then cycle the power on your Apple TV/s and/or Airport/s.
Power-up your computer, System Preferences --> Sharing, and rename the "Computer Name" as you wish.
This step is what killed my last phantom computer on the network.
There is an Apple support community thread that details a fix in terminal that will allow wake for network access, but I've not tried that yet. Here is that thread - Yosemite is renaming my computer - why?
Here is the Reddit thread that helped me identify that devices on the network were creating one of the phantom computers - http://www.reddit.com/r/osx/comments/2hxhp9/yosemite_computer_name_changing_for_ some_reason/
And this support community thread was also helpful - Computer name changes incrementally (1, 2, 3...)

  • Network devices not showing up under "shared" in finder bar

Ok so i have a network that consists of a maxtor nas device, 2 win xp pc's, 1 win7 pc, d-link 524 router, and my macbook pro. I would like to be able to transfer files between my mac and the devices and use the printer attached to my maxtor. My issue is that none of the computers show up under the "shared" section of finder or under network. I use to have this issue with leopard but it resolved itself. Now under snow leopard for a couple months and i have yet to get it work. I can access my mac and other pcs from a pc. Anyone know how to get my network to show up on my mac?

Your problem is very common under Snow. At first my shares did not show up under shared in finder windows. I, then, of course, used "Connect to Server" to connect to the shares--both Mac and PC. I found that the more I kept the shares active the more likely they were show up under shared. Then, I discovered that if I kept the computers from sleeping during the period of needed access they would tend to stay in shared without nearly so much keeping the connections active.
If you do not like the above work around, then there are two other possibilities. You can elect to show mounted items on your desktop. Do that and connect to each share. Then, go > users > unlock > + login options > try dragging the mounted shares to the login item window. If successful, then the shares should be available at login.
Another approach is to mount and connect as indicated above. Then, making an alias to the share should at least make things faster.

  • An unknown computer shows up under SHARED in Finder

An unknown computer (named "mac001b63aca152) that its info shows that it is PC Server shows up under SHARED in Finder. Is there a way I can be sure it doesn't have access to my files and also is it possible to remove it from the SHARED list?
    Thanks in advance,
    Behrang

I have seen a number like that "mac" followed by what looks like MAC address on my MacBook Pro in System Preferences > Network > Airport > Advanced Button > WINS tab at the Computer name.
It seemed to happen following an update where it seemed to have forgotten what I had named it and used the Airport Media Access Card (MAC) address instead.

  • Finder side-bar is 'greyed out'

As the title suggests, my finder side-bar is greyed out all of a sudden.
All I see is 'Devices', 'Shared', 'Places' and 'Search for'... all greyed out and unusable.
I have gone into preferences>sidebar> and all boxes are ticked...
As an aside: I have a time capsule and opened the time machine for the first time the other day... I noticed then that the desktop finder view which comes up also has a greyed out sidebar... could it be related?
Can anyone help get my side-bar back?

    Embarassingly... yes it does!
I stupidly have been clicking on the words only. Must be the alcohol still lingering since the New Year.
    Thanks Chris

  • I have a disk inserted into my MAC that is not showing up in the Finder side bar. How do I eject it?

I have a disk inserted into my MacBook Pro that is not showing up in the Finder side bar. How can I get it "ejected?" (I've checked in system preferences under CDs & DVDs and did not find a solution.)

Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
      1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
left mouse button until the disc ejects.
      2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
      3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
      4. Press COMMAND-E.
      5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in
your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
            /usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.

  • Finder side bar

    Hello,
I'm having an issue removing a folder (named TNT in the following image) from the Finder side bar.
When I try to drag it off form the side bar it doesn't work.
When I open the context menu of this 'TNT' folder, the usual options (like Delete forder) do not appear.
Can anyone help me on this?
I think this issue hapened since I restored my system from a time machine backup.

  • No device shows up in the finder side bar

Hi, I found that my USB flash drive doesn't shows up in the finder side bar, although it has been mounted and can be accessed when I search the name of my USB flash drive in the spotlight. Actually not only is the USB flash drive but nothing shows up in the device sectino of the side bar, what would be the potential problem for this?

Move the cursor over the DEVICES line in the sidebar. If the word Show appears on the right, click it.
