New iBook G3, needing basic airport help!

I recently purchased a refurbished iBook G3 with an airport card installed. My question is very basic -- one that is probably so simple that an answer isn't necessarily obvious on any of the discussion posts or tutorials I have read. It is this: Do I need one of the Airport Base Stations to connect to the Internet? I have a G4 IMac desktop system that is connected to the Internet via DSL; I would like to be able to have the laptop elsewhere in the house to be on the Internet. I guess I need to purchase the base station, but which one? I don't need anything fancy -- just reliable and easy. And when I get one, will my current DSL modem still work pr be necessary? Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the help. So let me make sure I understand. I don't need to buy the Airport Extreme if I only want to connect my laptop to a wireless internet connection but leave my desktop connected to the Ethernet modem? I can buy any wireless compatible base station?
Thanks for your help!
Also, I have another basic question. I'll also post this in the network forum. With my new iBook G3, I'm having problems connecting to the Internet via Ethernet (using the same settings as my desktop iMac).
When I open Internet Connect, I have the options of Internal Modem, Airport, VPN or 802.1X. I don't have a "Built-in Ethernet" option at the top like on the Internet Connect app on my desktop.
So I choose 802.1X. Under Network Port I choose Built-in Ethernet. I type in what I think is my User Name and Password (the one I use on my desktop Internet Connect). After awhile, it connects (or at least it says it is connected) yet I'm not able to open Safari or any other Internet application — it says File Not Found.
I'm sure it's very basic, but what am I doing wrong???
I have the Ethernet cable connected into the Ethernet port on my laptop. Thanks in advance for help!

  • HELP!!! New ibook user needs help really bad

    I just purchased a new ibook g3 or g4 off Ebay. I'm new to the mac world but I'm getting into graphic design and the mac is the way to go...anyway....I bought this mac off ebay and all that came with it was the computer and power cord. Now I'm having issues with it and to fix the issues I need the start-up disks or the systems restore disks which I don't have. Can I get those anywhere from Apple or am I S.O.L.? Thanks

    Hi mama392! And Welcome To Discussions!
    Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
    Panther, is no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
    A Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version of the Tiger Install DVD, can be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, etc.
    Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
    Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
    More info here Tip: Using OS X Install CDs/DVDs On Multiple Macs.
    Once Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version.
    If your Mac meets the System Requirements for Tiger, you could also consider installing that.
    And then use the 10.4.7 Combo Update.
    Tiger System Requirements
    Additionally,
    "Tiger ships on a DVD, but if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you’ll need CD media. When you buy Mac OS X Tiger, you qualify to purchase Tiger CDs for only $9.95."

  • Anti Virus Software for New iBook - Any Need for it

    Hi,
    Is there any real need to buy any Anti Virus software for a new iBook running Tiger.
    If so what would be the best software to Buy.

    Hello Simon,
    As has been stated there are NO viruses for Mac OS X. None!
    Some will say that NO form of protection is required. Some will say that there is a good case for having at least some protection.
    There is an interesting article here
    No need to spend any money now!

  • New in Oracle need basic help

    Hello
    I'm new in Oracle (First day in oracle), in one company i have Oracle 11g (windows server 2003), but the problem is that I need to understand:
    1) Name an location in file sistem of instances created
    2) Name an location in file sistem of databases created
    3) What is the best full backup method and how to create backups using cmd ?
    google.com didnt help me.
    Can some one help me ?

    Hi there,
    in Oracle we have a schema concept - All objects with segments are within the schema
    Every schema can use one or more tablespaces
    Each tablespace should have at least one datafile associated.
    With that said, You can run this query to know where is your schemas:
    Select owner,tablespace_name,sum(bytes/1024/1024) MB from dba_segments group by owner,tablespace_name;
    And to check the location of each tablespace:
    select tablespace_name,file_name from dba_data_files order by 1,2;
    And to check all directories that have some file from the database

  • New mac user needs imac g3 help

    hi iam a new mac user.i just picked up a used snow imac g3 600mhz from a garage sale,and i was trying to figure out a couple things with it.when i turn it on it boots too mac osx 10.3.5,but the screen color is all grey,but readable.i tried too change the colors too default but it still stays grey.i know though when it boots and shuts down it will change color.from what i read it could need a firmware upgrade to fix this?or is this common with the imac series?
    the only thing i could find out about it is that it needs mac 9.1 installed too do the firmware upgrade.another question is can i dual boot 9.1 and osx and be able to switch bewteen the 2? also how do i check my current firmware version on mac osx?any help would be great thanks

    Hi Caddy and welcome to Apple Discussions,
    how do i check my current firmware version on mac osx?any help would be great thanks
    There are a couple ways to do it.
    The easiest is boot the computer up and click and hold on the Apple slide down and release on "about this Mac". Click on the "more info" button. A window will open up and "hardware" will be selected. If not select it. Look down that window for "Boot ROM version".
    It should say "4.1.9 f1.
    If not go here:
    http://www.capecodgraphics.com/imac_firmware.htm
    The definitive site on this problem.
    and there it says one of the symptoms:
    "S2 -- iMac starts up normally but with dim or strangely coloured display."
    So that sounds like your problem.
    another question is can i dual boot 9.1 and osx and be able to switch bewteen the 2?
    Yes that will be no problem at all. !0.3.2 actually supports booting into Classic.
    BTW congratulations that 600 Snow is like the Jaguar of iMac CRTs.

    My girlfriend needs me to log in to itunes to help her w her apps. but when i do all i see are mine. i am logged into her acct???

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    You can't keep swapping iTunes accounts to use other people's apps or you will locked out of changing back to your own account. I'm not sure how you can help her with her apps from another device.

  • New College MBP - Need Some Windows Help

    Hope this is the right forum (?)!
    For those of you who run Windows on your Macs ...
    My son starts college next year - he's been on a Mac since age 3 (go figure).(We have 5 at home and 5 at work).
    I'm getting him a MBP 17" but he'll need Windows (which I can operate smoothly but thank God know nothing about when it comes to installation and what's on the OS).
    He'll be using OS X for most of his stuff, but some classes apparently require Windows.
    So - BootCamp - that much I can figure out. It's what I need to buy to get Windows installed which has me in a quandary (the MS site is horrible). Does Vista come with Word and Excel and PowerPoint installed, or do I need to buy that separately (along with the Mac version which I have for his OS side of the computer)?
    I'd like to get him set up so he can get used to that strange operating system over the summer, so if any of you parents/pros have any suggestions on what to buy from MS, and how to best get it set up,I'd sure appreciate your input. On that score - antivirus for Windows? What's suggested?
    Thanks (from a confused dad who bought his 1st Mac in 1984, and never looked back - or elsewhere!).

    HI,
    Son goes to school but you have homework to do
    BootCamp - Run Windows on your Mac I gave you this link just in case. Might need it in the future.
    To my knowledge Word/Excel and PowerPoint software does not come pre-installed on Windows Vista. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080629231850AAv0bby
    *"On that score - antivirus for Windows? What's suggested?"* Anti-virus software is definitely a must when running Windows on a Mac. (Avoid Norton). Try here. http://www.mcafee.com/us/
    Here's a link to the BootCamp forums to post for help and suggestions. http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=237

  • New Hotmail Account -- Need to Verify -- Help Says it's Browser Settings

    I have a new, domain-hosted email account via Hotmail. When attempting to send a message to ~12 recipients, a Microsoft page appears indicating the account must be verified in order to send to multiple recipients. To do so, it asks for a phone number, and that's all (plus clicking an agreement with terms). Upon submitting the phone number an error or warning message is received indicating the action can't be completed at this time, and to try again later. I have tried later, and tried, and tried. The Hotmail help forum suggests that particular browser settings might be at issue. Since I use Safari, thought I'd check here to see if any Safari users on OSX have had similar issues and found a solution for Hotmail accounts. Thanks in advance for replies.

    Yes, I have about decided that, indeed, it has nothing to do with browser settings. It may be a restriction on new Hotmail accounts using your own domain. Thanks again.

  • Need basic info/help

    If I am in the wrong forum, I apologize, but the Flash Builder forum is closed.
    I am a complete newbie with regard to the flash development environment and want to understand more about Flash Builder. So I am trying to do the "Flex Test Drive: Build an application in an hour" tutorial. It's a nice idea.
    It tells you to create a web service using Zend. So I followed their instructions... didn't find success there.
    Then it occurred to me that I already have a WAMP service installed on my pc. Do I also need a Zend service?
    If I don't need a Zend service, do I need to unintall Zend?
    After that, do I need to explicitly to define a service CLASS for WAMP? If so, could some kind person explain to me how to get started on this, or direct me to a document that a newbie can understand?
    Thanks, any help will be appreciated.

    Flash Builder can access just about any kind of data on any type of server (the "back-end"). It looks like you want to develop your back-end services using PHP. It does not matter which tool you use for that; it is a matter of preference/budget. You can use your WAMP installation, of course.
    You may need to first concentrate on developing back-end data services using PHP, then look into how you would retrieve the results within FB (hint: the FB part is very simple and you will love it!). For instance, start with a PHP script which simply put together some sample XML, then have FB retrieve that XML using the HTTPService. Once you get the data into FB, it's up to you what you want to do with it.
    Here is a simple PHP page you could start with:
    <?php
    //Output XML from PHP.
    //Open tag:
    $output = "<return_data>";
    //Create element value:
    $output .= "Hello World";
    //Close tag:
    $output .= "</return_data>";
    print ($output);
    ?>

    My buddy from work(who knows a ton about computers but isn't answering his phone to help due to the fact that he loved Captain Morgan's WAY too much last night) transferred about 20 GB of music from his external hard drive directly to my iPod. I can see it on my summary screen listed as "other" and not "music". I've looked through the "c" and "d" drive of this pc but cannot find the iPod. Even when I unhide all hidden items. How can I open this "other" file and have these songs transferred to iTunes??? Any help is most appreciated! Thank you!!!

  • Need a little help new to mac

    Need a little help I'm new to Mac.. i have had my ibook for over a year now and i like it a lot, but some times my usb post dies on my for a couple days maybe weeks. Ill have my ipod connected and when i go to plug in a flash drive. It doesn't detect my ipod anymore and my usb port don't work. it says that they were "removed improperly" and now they are not working again..i have tried to reinstall the whole os again and that doesn't work i don't have the hardware test disk so i don't know what could be the problem i know its not the logic board is there any test i can do to it to find out the problem its an ibook late 2001... there is no reset button on it. i tried to hold in the space bar and now when i boot up i get prompt to this screen that shows the world and then a folder with a ? mark but then after a few sec it boots right up im a mess need some help

    +it says that they were "removed improperly"+
    You have to go to the iPod's icon on your computer (or the flash drive's icon), select it and eject it there before removing it. Otherwise, data can be corrupted and/or lost. Repeatedly removing it without ejecting it from the desktop can cause it not to be recognized any longer.
    If your iBook is a "late 2001" model. It should have a reset button. Check out the chart here to make sure which model iBook you have:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1772?viewlocale=en_US
    +i get prompt to this screen that shows the world and then a folder with a ? mark but then after a few sec it boots right up+
    It's trying to find a network volume from which to boot.
    Once it's booted up, go to System Preferences > Startup Disk, and select your Mac OS X startup volume. Then close System Preferences. The next time you start up, it should start up without looking for a network volume.

  • Firewire transfer problems on brand new Ibook...HELP

    I just fired up my new Ibook for the first time. One of the first thing it asks is weather you want to retreive your info from your old computer. I said yes. I attached the firewire from my new Ibook to my old G3 b/w computer. I held down the "T" as it asked and then waited for the "firewire logo" to appear on my old computer screen. Well, it never did. I restarted and held down the "T" again. Still nothing. I really need all my info off the old computer. Could my firewire its self be bad? Am I doing something wrong? HELP.
    A follow up question will be , once I get the "firewire" logo on my screen, how do I transfer the address book, etc.
    thanks in advance

    If the Blue & White G3 has Mac OS X 10.1 or newer, you could use an application like Carbon Copy Cloner to clone all of your files to an external FireWire hard drive. You could then attach the FireWire hard drive to your new iBook and transfer your files. You do not have to transfer all your files the very first time you startup your new Mac. Take a look at Knowledge Base Article #25773.
    The iBook does not require a "crossover" Ethernet cable if you're going to transfer files between it and another computer. Check out Knowledge Base Article #42717.
