NEW IBOOK USER......HELP

I JUST PURCHASED A IBOOK G3 ON EBAY FOR $150. I HAD A FEW QUESTIONS. I AM A COLLEGE STUDENT SO THE MOST I WOULD USE MY LAPTOP FOR IS TYPING PAPAERS AND SURFING THE WEB. IS THE LAPTOP ALREADY WIRELESS OR DO I NEED TO BUY A CARD OR SOMETHING ? IS THIS A DECENT COMPUTER FOR A BEGINNER ? I WANTED A MACBOOK BUT FOR $150 YOU CAN'T BEAT IT. I AM USED TO WINDOWS APPLICATIONS, IS THE SYSTEM HARD TO NAVAGIATE ? IF ANYONE HAS HAD ONE AND CAN IVE ME ANY INFO I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE IT.

It says, "Wireless: N/A." That likely means that you will need an original AirPort card.

It says it has the newest OS on it, but no mention is made of software restore or installation CD's, so, likely, none are included. It is most likely that they have blanked the hard drive, so that all of the software that came on it (like iLife and AppleWorks) are not there, and there is likely a bare OS X 10.4 installation (which is still pretty rich in features).
It is a CD-ROM only, so it can't read DVD's, and you can't use the normal installation DVD to maintain the OS that is installed on it. Sooner or later, you will probably need the Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) installation CD's for hard drive maintenance. You can find those CD's at AppleRescue.

Normally, you just connect the monitor to the MacBook using a VGA adaptor that you can buy from an Apple Store. Now try System Preferences > Displays > Detect Displays. You should now be able to select a display mode for the monitor. If it still doesn't work, then I'd check that everything is properly connected. I've had problems with colours disappearing due to a faulty connection in the VGA adaptor.

I just purchased a new ibook g3 or g4 off Ebay. I'm new to the mac world but I'm getting into graphic design and the mac is the way to go...anyway....I bought this mac off ebay and all that came with it was the computer and power cord. Now I'm having issues with it and to fix the issues I need the start-up disks or the systems restore disks which I don't have. Can I get those anywhere from Apple or am I S.O.L.? Thanks

Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Panther, is no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
A Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version of the Tiger Install DVD, can be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.

Once Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version.
If your Mac meets the System Requirements for Tiger, you could also consider installing that.
And then use the 10.4.7 Combo Update.

New ibook user. Can someone help a beginner?

I am a computer simpleton. I just spend what to me is a lot of money on a used but very nice ibook. I am trying to teach myself how to use it. I would like to wean myself completely from my familys windows pc. My family uses aol on the main pc. It seems a pain to log into aol every time i want to check my mail...is there another way? Also, I dont know whether we use an imap pop or unix? I dont even know what those are. I dont want to pay for another email account. I have a million and two questions....but I guess that is a good start. Thanks anyone who can help me.

As Mylenium says, it's a good idea to dedicate a separate local hard drive for each of a few jobs:
"If your source footage files are on a slow disk drive (or across a slow network connection), then performance will be poor. When possible, keep the source footage files for your project on a fast local disk drive. Ideally, youll have three drives: one for source footage files, one from which the application runs, and one for rendered output."

New Illustrator user help.

So I am trying to design a jersey and it has to be done on illustrator. The company has given me a downloadable template to use but after I opened the file in illustrator, I was not able to select the individual pieces of the jersey that I wanted to edit. Instead, I was only able to select the picture as a whole. Can anyone help me with this? I am completely new to illustrator.

I think the company wants you to trace this template. You'll have to lock the picture/template, (cmd+2 on mac or ctrl+2 on windows) then you'll have to trace manually the jersey using the pen tool with the other anchor points tool, or using all the shapes tool (rectangle, ellipse. polygon, etc) with pathfinder (window>pathfinder). You can learn how to use the pen tool, looking at the the illustrator help (f1). After closing the shapes of your illustration you'll have to colorize them using the color and the swatches panel (Window>color and Window>swatches. Keep training!

New iphone user - help needed with sync and icloud

I have 389 contacts on my iphone 4S,but only 370 are appearing in icloud on my laptop. When I look at "Groups" on my iphone there are two - icloud which contains the 370 that have sync'd ok, and my Apple account name (or e-mail address, they're the same) which contains 379. Presumably the missing 19 are somewhere in this 379, as when both groups are enabled I have the total of 389.
Any suggestions how I can get all my 389 contacts (and future new ones that I add) to sync correctly?

Because there is only 19 I would go to icloud.com and sign in. I would add each one into your contacts that way and delete the duplicates.

I doubt it's software. You can do an Archive and Install of the system software:

If you have a good backup, you can even do an Erase and Install and start from scratch. That would test the "it's software" theory.

New Logic User - help setting up Mac & Logix

Hello all. I'm a PC guy, but just got a Mac recently. Logic Pro came in the mail yesterday and I wanted to know if there are any settings I should change on the Mac. I haven't read the manual yet, but am assuming it shows you how to set up LP with 2 hard drives for optimization? If not, please help me out.

With a dualcore you should be pretty much fine out of the box. That's the beauty of the mac. The only downside to the warm fuzzy os is when stuff doesn't work its harder to find where to tweak.
Drives should be fine unless your going to be doing heavy multi-tracking at high sampling rates. Some suggest to turn off journaling on audio drives and disable spotlight from indexing them, but i think the effect is minimal, especially with your system.
I'd be more concerned about drivers for your soundcard/outboard midi stuff.

New smartphone user - help needed with 520

I hope my issues are easy to solve. I have a gmail account and I want to download apps from Microsoft. Seems simple enough. But I cannot set up my gmail account and am totally befuddled. I look up Microsoft accounts and there are several. I went into Microsoft's outlook.com and set up an account @live.com.
When I try to sign into that account to download apps I get the error code FFFFFE70.
Please help me understand what I need to do to easily created accounts to post here, download apps from Microsoft, and have my email from gmail come to my phone

New Mac User - help transferring songs

Hi,
I have just made the switch from PC to Mac. Scary but happy. I have my old PC hard drive plugged into my new MacBook. I transferred the entire folder called My Music onto my new laptop.
I opened iTunes and it checked for music to import. And all of my 1700+ songs and videos seemed to have been moved over.
But how come the playlists aren't there? Did I do something wrong? And also, there is a strange Playlist on the right that was there before I added my old songs. Someone named Laura?? IS that just a default thingh? My laptop is brand new so who's music library do I have??
I'm so confused - I don't want to connect my iPod until I'm posititve that my songs and playlists will be there.

There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. I use Senuti but check the others out and choose whichever you are happy with.

If your iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting back to your computer and a different iTunes. If it is set to automatically update you will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No*. Pressing "Yes" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it.
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys, (on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box: Managing Your Songs Manually

NEW IPAD USER - HELP NEEDED RE: ITUNES & ICLOUD

Ok, so, firstly, sorry for what will prob be mundane and often asked questions !! (I have looked on apple support for ipad, but can't seem to find the exact answers to what I want to know!!)
Here goes,
I have a newly purchased ipad 4 (wifi only), and am a bit confused about a few things.
1) I want to put apps, games, music etc onto my ipad, I have downloaded itunes onto my laptop so that I can download apps onto that and then sync to my ipad, but at the risk of using all the memory on my laptop, after I sync ipad to laptop and sync apps across from itunes, can I then delete apps from my laptop to free up memory? Will they completely delete from itunes if I do this?
2) Should I use icloud, and if so, to get apps onto there, do they first have to be in itunes and moved to icloud? And if so, then can they be removed from laptop, again, to free up memory?
3) If I do use icloud (is it recommended??) ......will all the apps I download in itunes and move to icloud be there automatically when I connect to wifi with my ipad after logging in using apple id?

Yes, you cna delete them, and they will be removed from iTunes. However, you can Download Apps directly onto the iPad from the App Store App; also once purchased, Apps can be redownloaded for free from the App Store "cloud" as many time as you want. So if you delete them from iTunes you can always re-download them in the future should you ever need to.

iCloud stores only backups of your device, and files form Apps like Pages, Numbers and Keynote along with your calendars, contacts, etc.. it does not directly sotre Apps or music or movies. You cannot directly transfer Apps to iCloud. However as was said, once purchased any Apps will be available to download from the "cloud", which is slightly different to "iCloud", automatically. They don't take up space in the iCloud account quota though, and can be safely deleted form your computer if you want to.

They'll be there, automatically should you ever decide to delete them form your iPad and need to download them again. Provided of course they continue to be available in the App Store. If they are removed from the App Store, then they will no longer be accessible from the cloud.

New Apple user help re: emac g4 and OSX

I have always wanted and Apple Mac, but never had the time nor the money to consider until now. Well, at least I have the time - I purchased via ebay an emac G4 1.25MHz, 1Gig memory, 150 Gbyte hard drive, DVD combo etc. It came with OSX 10.5.8 installed along with ILife 08.
But no install or restore disks. I did not think that would be a problem until I started to browse this discussion group.
So - I can't afford retail version of OSX 10.5 and iworks/ilife (which I'd like).
My question is - can I install an earlier version of OSX - say 10.2 or 10.3, then buy the upgrade disks to 10.5 (which are much cheaper than the retail version)?

You don't need to erase the hard drive to instal a previous version of Mac OS X. Just do a clean instal/archive and instal.
Apple don't offer "upgrade" routes for the OS. You can upgrade for free via built in "Software Update" within the version you are running - ie 10.4 through to 10.4.11 - but there's no cheap option to go from 10.4 to 10.5.
At this point there is no real concern... only if you start to experience problems. (Sure, legally, you should have the disk, if you are using the software. In reality, people sell Macs with no disks, but software installed, and Apple are NOT going to come banging on your door like Microsoft because you're running their OS without the disk. There are no encryption keys for Mac OS. If Apple happily include their OS on all newly purchased Macs, it's hardly fair for them to say you can't use the OS on a 2nd hand machine.
That said - sure, if your system gets corrupted, you'll need an instal disk... as noted, you need a black labelled disk - UNIVERSAL INSTAL - or, an eMac 1.25GHz grey labelled disk. Thing is, from memory, the grey disks just say "eMac"... so if you buy one off eBay, it may not be the right one for your machine. So yes, a black label is best...
Because Leopard (10.5) is the last OS to run on these older PPC Macs, it still can be a bit pricey. But look on eBay etc and you may get a bargain.

New iBook G3, needing basic airport help!

I recently purchased a refurbished iBook G3 with an airport card installed. My question is very basic -- one that is probably so simple that an answer isn't necessarily obvious on any of the discussion posts or tutorials I have read. It is this: Do I need one of the Airport Base Stations to connect to the Internet? I have a G4 IMac desktop system that is connected to the Internet via DSL; I would like to be able to have the laptop elsewhere in the house to be on the Internet. I guess I need to purchase the base station, but which one? I don't need anything fancy -- just reliable and easy. And when I get one, will my current DSL modem still work pr be necessary? Thanks for the help. So let me make sure I understand. I don't need to buy the Airport Extreme if I only want to connect my laptop to a wireless internet connection but leave my desktop connected to the Ethernet modem? I can buy any wireless compatible base station?

Also, I have another basic question. I'll also post this in the network forum. With my new iBook G3, I'm having problems connecting to the Internet via Ethernet (using the same settings as my desktop iMac).
When I open Internet Connect, I have the options of Internal Modem, Airport, VPN or 802.1X. I don't have a "Built-in Ethernet" option at the top like on the Internet Connect app on my desktop.
So I choose 802.1X. Under Network Port I choose Built-in Ethernet. I type in what I think is my User Name and Password (the one I use on my desktop Internet Connect). After awhile, it connects (or at least it says it is connected) yet I'm not able to open Safari or any other Internet application — it says File Not Found.
I'm sure it's very basic, but what am I doing wrong???

I am a new Indesign user and a Creative Cloud member. I was using the Window/Pages drop down window to view my pages alphabetically or by page number and also to determine whether or not my JPEG files were sufficiently HI-Res for the printer. I don't know how I did it but somehow the window has changed so that now it does not have the alphabetical/numerical/Hi-Res information. It just shows the pages in a two page spread in numerical order. How can I restore the window so that I will be able to view the information as I did previously.

The pages panel is not the place where you see this information. You can customize the Links panel to show all sorts of things, including the page number, effective and actual ppi, and whether the link is OK or needs updating.
