New iCal vs. old iCal: 3 things I miss

I recently upgraded from Tiger to Snow Leopard and miss a few things about the old iCal.  I tend to use iCal more as a diary than an appointment book.
1.  You used to be able to drag a New Event being created down past the bottom of the calendar and it would scroll until the new event ended at the time you wanted.  Now, it only goes to the bottom of the screen, whatever time that is.
2.  I liked the sidebar display of event details better than today's "double-click for the balloon, then press edit" method.
3.  When you wrote Notes in an event, the old version would have a little 'page" icon in the event to show that there were notes with the event.  Now, an event  has no clue that there are notes with it.
As for "future features", I wish iCal had a "timeclock addition" feature, so I could see how many hours I've spent on a given category in the calendar.
If anyone has workarounds for these, please post it.  I see nothing in Preferences.

There are a few software features that I miss from my DTV / Tivo days vs. FiOS:
1 - The ability to create wishlist automatic recordings. I could create a Season Pass for a keyword such as "Corvette" and the DVR would record any shows with the keyword in the title or program description.
2 - The ability to jump to a specific date in time in the guide.
3 - The ability to view upcoming shows for a Season Pass from the Season Pass Manager (Series Manager).  This is a big one for me because it's a PITA to have to search for a show so I can see upcoming episodes when it's already in my Series Manager.
Verizon hereby has my permission to add these features to future software releases.
I'll add some more as I think of them.  What are yours?
None.
But I do have a few questions and comments, as I have never had a Tivo:
re #2: How do you jump to a specific date in time in the Guide, and how far out, in days, can you go on a Tivo? Just curious, because I can easily jump a day at a time in the FiOS Guide, out to the limit of how many days are available, usually 12 for me.
re #3: Again, how do you do it on a Tivo, and how far out can you go? With FiOS, once I have scheduled a series, it is easy to see all episodes scheduled, but only within the time limit of the Guide currently stored in the DVR, again usually 12 days for me.
I think there may be additions/enhancements to these functions coming in the new 1.9 level of the IMG that is beginning to roll out.
Just curious, thanks for any feedback.

  • Cannot view new ICal in browser

SInce updating to the new ICal, it only gives one an option to SUCSCRIBE to my public calendars, not to VIEW with a URL in a browser.
    Help?

In other words, when one makes a calendar public, it sends an email that only says "Click here to subscribe to this calendar". The old ICal would send an email that said "To View this calendar, click here", "To subscribe to this calendar, click here" and "To learn more about ICal click here"

  • New iCal - where is my monthly/list view??

What is with the new iCal??  I desperately want the old version back!  I NEED to be able to look at the whole month at a time with a scrolling list on the bottom of what is going on when I click on the day.  This particular view is now gone!  Every person I know uses this view.  Nobody wants to see the block color coded list - I just want a simple list.  The list that I want can be found when pressing 'search', but I can't look at this with the (monthly) calendar at the top also so that I can click on days and see the event list for that day.  You would think this would be an even better view with the new larger/longer screen, but they have removed it as far as I can tell.  Any ideas?

To see the month, touch the name of the month in the upper left of the screen and you'll get the month view.  It then shows the year in the upper left and if you touch that you get the yearly calendar.  I see no mention of list view in the current iPhone user guie for iOS 7 (download for free from the Apple website).

  • How can I make new iCal events default to 1 hour long?

Please help me love my iCal again.  How can I set it up so that the default for a new event is an hour long instead of EIGHT?!?  Why on earth does iCal think a new event should be eight hours long?  It's especially annoying at night.  Add a new event at 9PM and iCal sets an end for 5AM and rolls it into the next day, which means I have to change the end time and change the end date every time I add a new event.
Seriously, who designed this thing?  Here's a perfect example of bad design (which, coming from Apple is shocking!): In the menu, click New Event.  Does iCal create a new event?  No.  It draws a box arrow pointing to the big plus sign.  Are we sure Microsoft didn't design this thing?
I'm a diehard Mac Guy for over 17 years.  But I must say, I'm disappointed with some aspects of Lion.  Yikes.  (sorry...  I needed to vent!)

I probably should have noted that I'm using iCal in the month view.  Maybe that's why my iCal thinks every new event is eight hours long?  The previous iCal didn't behave this way.
And, yes, a menu item titled New Event that opens a box where I can create a new event rather than actually creating a New Event is bad design.  It adds extra steps.  It feels like a Microsoft thing where you click on something and then get asked if that's really what you wanted to do.  When I click New Event, I want a new event to open so I can input the details including calenrar, alarm, repeating data, notes, etc.  Sure, if I wanted a quick option, I'd go for the + sign to add one.  But when it comes to having to change calendars or add extra info, making me go through extra steps is poor design.
There's a lot to like in the new iCal, but pushing the app away from design simplicity for VISUAL simplicity is poor design for a desktop OS app.  On a three inch screen like the iPhone, it makes perfect sense.  It's brilliant, in fact.  But on a desktop OS?  I completely understand the idea of merging iOS with OS X, but a motorcycle is not a tractor trailer even though they both have engines.  To treat them as such is poor design.
Another example: in iCal, it's easy to hide calendars you may not need to see.  That's a great feature.  In the previous iCal, there was a pane that showed which calendars were visible and which were not.  Now, if you're looking at a month, you have no way of seeing that there may also be more events that are hidden without clicking the calendars for a popup to display which are visible and which are not.  I'm no Mac basher.  I have a series of the black & white "Think Different" prints framed and hanging on my walls.  I love Apple, but the new iCal is poor design.

  • New iCal issues on iPad

after updating to new iCal, most birthdays show up as duplicates. Genius Bar associate was not able to resolve issue and to wait up

I recommend spending some time on a live chat with mobile me support. There are so many factors that affect the calendars, it gets quite complicated. I had a similar issue, but I can't tell you what one thing fixed it up.
Checking settings on my Mac mini and Air, backing up and deleting contacts on the Mac, turning off and on the birthday calendar checkmark in MobileMe, and deleting contacts from iPhone and iPad restoring from MobileMe, is just naming a few of the things we did.
    Regards.

  • Upgrading to new iCal removes Entourage syncing

I use Entourage at work, and sync the calendar with MobileMe so that I can get calendar info & notifications on my iPhone.
This isn't supported by the new iCal - but rather than let me stay on the old one (which I'm perfectly happy with) I'm being forced to make the upgrade by May 5th or none of my calendars will sync.
Apple support have only said for me to file a feedback form.
    Very frustrating!

I think that Apple should've been more explicit that the only real way to update is to unregister all but one main computer, run the update, and then re-register all the other computers. In any case, this is how I downgraded. There may be a more efficient way:
    0. Be sure that you have backups of your calendars, which you made before upgrading. If you don't have these, you are in trouble.
    1. Unregister all computers tied to the mobile me account except one, called the 'main computer' for lack of a better term.
    2. Turn off calendar syncing on all iPhones, each time saying to delete the calendar data
    3. Go to http://me.com/calendar/downgrade
    4. Click the 'downgrade' button (I think that's its name)
    5. Wait a little while until the calendars have been downgraded
    6. Delete all the calendars from the main computer
    7. Restore all the calendars from the backup
    8. Sync the main computer with mobile me
    9. Re-register all computers and tell them to replace their data with the data from mobile me
    10. Turn on calendar syncing on your iPhone
A bit of a pita, but I found that this worked better than turning off sync for the calendars and then turning it back on.
My problem when upgrading was that floating timezone events had their times shifted, which for me is a big deal.

  • New ical download

waited for download - then got an error message i should send report - did that then the new ical did appear. next day I had the old one back. Checked my mobileme acct that has the new ical. someone have some info. thanks. NM

    nm1016,
Here are some Knowledge Base articles to get you started. Since you are using Leopard, you will have limited MobileMe calendar functionality.
MobileMe: Using Mac OS X Leopard v10.5.x with the new MobileMe Calendar
    MobileMe: New Calendar known issues
MobileMe: Frequently Asked Questions about the new MobileMe Calendar
MobileMe: Setting up the new MobileMe Calendar

    Good Luck.

  • New ICal compatability

I have a G5 iMac running 10.5.8 (appearing to be maxed out), and a MacBook Intel Core 2 Duo running 10.6.5, and two iPhones 4 running iOS 4.2.1. If I update to new iCal (12/8/10), it appears only iPhones and MacBook will run it. Will it be compatible with old iCal on G5 iMac? I sync all calendars over MobileMe.

    Dan,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
According to MobileMe: Supported system requirements, and MobileMe: Using Mac OS X Leopard v10.5.x with the new MobileMe Calendar, "Leopard is not fully supported, but can still get basic functionality from the new MobileMe Calendar."
"Considerations before upgrading to the new MobileMe Calendar:
    ▪ If you have recently synced your MobileMe Calendar with a computer running Mac OS X Leopard, you may receive an alert when upgrading to the new MobileMe Calendar. If you are no longer syncing with any computers running Mac OS X Leopard, you can safely ignore that warning.
    ▪ If you have a computer with Mac OS X Leopard that syncs calendars with the old MobileMe Calendar, you may receive a sync dialogue warning that all of your calendars will be deleted when upgrading to the new MobileMe Calendar. This is expected since part of the upgrade process is to delete your calendars from the old sync system. Additionally, iCal will appear to have no calendars in it until you follow the setup steps at the bottom of this article.
    ▪ Features of the new MobileMe Calendar that are not available with Mac OS X Leopard:
    ▪ Push updates. See this article for more information.
    ▪ The ability to share and accept shared calendars with others from within iCal. These changes can still be made at me.com/calendar.
    ▪ Subscribed calendar syncing."
    ;~)

  • Cannot add new iCal events on my iPhone 3G.

My iPhone 3G has stopped saving new iCal events. I can still set up new events in iCal on my laptop, and they'll sync over to my iPhone, but new events won't save when entered into iCal on my iPhone. Any idea what's wrong and how to fix this?
BTW, I just got rid of a MobileMe account. I never ended up using MobileMe, so it doesn't seem like that should be the issue here, but I noticed that some other folks have had iCal sync issues with MobileMe, so I thought I'd add that info.

    In other words, it's hacked.
Sorry, you can't get help here.
Say for an instance, that it wasn't hacked. Would you suggest to just wipe and restore it?

  • Create new iCal event from contents of mail uses wrong date

I received an email today with an appointment using the date "6/3/2010 at 4PM". Being from the US, it is obvious to me that this meeting should occur on June 3, 2010, but when I attempt to create a new iCal event with this date it creates the event on March 6, 2010. Even more confusing is that when I choose "Show this date in iCal" it highlights March 7, 2010!
    My question is:
Shouldn't the system default to a month/day/year date preference everywhere when I've selected US English in the internationalization preferences pane?

have a very similar question: is there somewhere an application where I can, when receiving an email, put it into iCal so that I am reminded about it in a week or something?

  • In mail "create new ical event" has stopped appearing in ical

Please help! I love clicking on data in email to bring up the "Create New iCal Event" box, and using it to put new events into my ical calendar. But recently when I "Create New iCal Event" from an email, and click "add to iCal" the window closes but the event doesn't show up in iCal. I can still add events by clicking on a calendar date in iCal and typing them in, but the link between Mail and iCal seems to be broken. How can I fix it?
Could this be related to how Firefox recently broke? Foxfire will not save bookmarks any more, either, I click on "Bookmarks," then "Bookmark this page". The window closes but the bookmark does not save. Also, the forward/backward browser arrows no longer work on Foxfire.

Could you be more specific? What happens (or fails to happen?)

  • No luck syncing .cvs or vcs.csv files on the new iCal

This is so annoying, I can no longer sync my University timetable with the new iCal. Does anyone know why I can no longer add .cvs or .vcs.csv files to the new iCal? Thanks

    Presumably you've tried trashing your preferences . . ?
Have you tried trashing the App and reinstalling it?

  • Is it possible to remove leather styling in new iCal?

    Hi,
I waited for new iCal so much, but now I just can not use it, it makes me sick to look at the top bar of iCal where you can see LEATHER styling. Is it possible to remove that?
    thank you

I found another thread about iCal style. There is a patch to change the look of iCal, but i don't like the way patching, i hope change'ing theme will be available on next update

Please guys, who don't like new looks of iCal and Address Book, write a complaint to apple:

  • Create new message after new ical starts

hey all... been looking for a thread on this but didn't see it.
when i first launch the new ical app and create a new event then attempt to enter the title (subject?) for that a event ical interrupts the process and closes the event even though i haven't finished entering the title.
sometimes it will throw me into the edit event mode (like when you hit cmd E on an existing event) and blur the focus from the subject of the event.
i can see ical trying to sync when this happens (icon by [email protected] on top of my calendar list). and typically it only happens for the first few seconds after ical launches. of course - i could just leave ical running but i do a lot of hd video and high end graphics editing and i don't want to use system resources for ical if i dont' have to.
makes sense to me - launch the program, add event, close program. pretty much how i use everything on os x. when you're done with a program you close it.
    anyone else seeing this?
    k

    bump.
anyone seeing this problem - ical won't let me enter a topic for new events and instead loses focus from the entry... only happens for first minute after launching ical.
this has only been happening since upgrading to the new mobile me version of ical. never happened before but now it's pretty much unusable. see previous post for full description.

  • The symbols in the new iCal

where are the symbols in the new iCal? why have they been retired? it was such a good feature to see stuff at a glance without having to right click each and every event to see if maybe there are notes etc.

    gone... bad improvement...
