New ICC standard?

So while stumbling around the Internet this morning in a caffeine-deprived stupor, I found some talk about a new gamma curve for an upcoming revision of color management policies. It read, in part:
To complicate the matters, L* curve will become an official recommendation for ECI RGB V2...To complicate the matters yet further, 1976 CIE L*a*b* colorspace is not perceptually uniform in areas of high chromaticity, and also the original 1976 L* curve was ill-defined mathematically (it had noncontinuity in shadow areas leading to problems in matrix inversions). This lead to the replacement of traditional CIE L*a*b* delta-E used in evaluation of profiles with CIE DE-2000.
The upshot of all this is, I followed links to these two pages:
http://www.swop.org/
http://www.colormanagement.org/en/swopprofile.html
Of particular interest to me are the SWOP profiles in the second link. Are they of any value or should I avoid them like the plague? Your opinions and comments are welcome. :)
EDIT: oh yeah, a new Lab profile was thrown into the mix as well...
http://www.brucelindbloom.com/UPLab.html

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that the L* gamma curve is only for monitor calibration and has nothing to do with delta-E calculations in CIE L*a*b*. It also has nothing to do with the new SWOP data sets that your links refer to. The profiles you link to are high GCR profiles made from the same data as the "official" profiles available through IDEAlliance: http://www.idealliance.org/swop/resources/
Both the IDEAlliance and colormanagement.org profiles are perfectly valid if you are printing to those conditions. The data sets describe averaged web-offset print conditions on #3 and #5 coated sheets respectively, and can be used without fear! There is also the GRACoL_Coated1 data set and profiles, which describes sheetfed printing on a #1 coated sheet, which may also be appropriate, depending on how you are printing.
I don't know much about Bruce Lindbloom's "Universal Perceptual Lab" profile, but once again, I don't think this has any bearing on SWOP datasets or profiles.

  • New DVI-standard doesn't fit with old Apple adapter

I bought a new MBP i7 the last week and was very surprised when i noticed that the adapter i bought (Mini Display to DVI) doesn't fit with my old adapter (DVI to VGA). Apples new DVI-adapter us the DVI-D standard and that doesn't work well with teh DVI-I standard. When i talked with Apple and also with a Apple store they didn't know of any new DVI-standard and if there is an adapter (Mini Display to DVI-I). http://www.interfacebus.com/DesignConnector_Digital_Visual_Interface_DVIBus.html
Is there anyone out there who know if it is possible to buy this Mini Display to DVI-I (Dual)?

The Apple Mini-Displayport-to-DVI adapter is DVI-D because there is no analog signal emitted from the Mini-Displayport. The contacts the adapter lacks are the ones that would carry an analog signal, if there were any. If you want to connect your MBP to a device with a VGA input port, get a mini-displayport-to-VGA adapter.

  • No logon server available for Win 7 Pro to join new 2012 Standard domain

I can't get a Win 7 Pro client to join a new 2012 Standard network.  I am trying to use a Win 7 Pro computer from an old 2011 SBS FE network.  I am creating the new network from scratch and got as far as setting up the new server, establishing
Internet access, and confirming that the client can ping the new server, which accepted new user credentials for the new domain added to the old client.  I rebooted.  Now I get the message that no server is available to service the
logon request, for all domains and all user accounts on the old 2011 client, including the individual computer "domain."  I can't access anything on the client.  Server still accepts the user account and password.
Unsuccessful efforts: rebooting old client; searching archives for solutions; disabling DCHP on router; and jumping out window.

  • Is there still a new MIDI standard coming out soon (MIDI 2.0)?

Hello, I was just wondering what the word on the supposed second coming of MIDI was. I seem to hear about it for a bit, and than hear nothing for a good while. I heard that it will be finalized within a year of MIDI's twenty year anniversary, which is coming up this year i think? Anyway, what am I missing here? Any gossip?
I am pondering this more as I am thinking about replacing some MIDI equipment. Should I wait to go all-out on the coolest stuff since a new MIDI standard would maybe (likely?) require all new gear to take advantage?
Also, even if "MIDI 2" is finalized very soon, about how long before we can expect good commercial products taking advantage of it?
And golly, "MIDI 2" aught to turn Logic on it's head requiring some heavy rewriting to keep up with the jones', huh?
    Thanks for your participation!

  • LR1.3 - new ICCs not showing up in Custom Profile popup list

I've copied some new ICC files into the /Library/ColorSync/Profiles directory (on an IMac OS 10.4.11), but when I try to choose one, they are not in the Custom Profile popup list. I have tried renaming an existing one that was showing up and the old name shows up in the popup list, even after a re-boot.
Is there a separate process to help LR "see" the ICCs I've added to the Profiles directory?

1st: Upgrade to 1.4.1. It's free and far better.
Lightroom does not recognize CMYK printer profiles, only RGB ones, so that could be your problem. The name you see in the popup is not the filename but is taken from data internal to the file.

  • New ICC v4 sRGB Color Space May Prevent Clipping Converting From ProPhoto RGB

Just discovered and tried out this new sRGB color space downloaded from this page:
    http://www.color.org/srgbprofiles.xalter
Here's a cropped demo with histograms of a raw image I've been working on in ProPhotoRGB in ACR 3.7 and CS2:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/26078880@N02/2874068887/sizes/o/
Please disregard the PRMG name in the demo. I got confused as to which was which on that site and thought that this version of sRGB was a PRMG=(Perceptual Reference Medium Gamut) profile. It's called sRGB_v4_ICC_preference.icc.
Note the different color shifts using the Perceptual intent and unchecking Black Point Compensation=(BPC). Neat little features embedded in this profile, but not sure about how it renders certain colors close to clipping in the shadows. That site doesn't recommend mixed use of ICC v4 with v2 color spaces and output device profiles but I did it anyway just to see what it does.
Who knows this may be the equivalent of handing scissors to children, but I'm just one of those curious children and thought I'ld share anyway.

I'll try to respond to a few items above.
The digital values in a Pro Photo RGB file should generally be the same as for a ROMM RGB file. The exception is that all possible Pro Photo RGB values are "legal" but not all ROMM RGB values are "legal." ISO 22028-2 restricts the legal ROMM values to those with PCS LAB values between 0 and 100 L* and -128 to +128 a* and b*.
There is no enforcement if you use the illegal values in a ROMM file but as some of these values do not represent possible colors this is not advisable. I think it is good practice to try to stay mostly inside the ICC v4 PRM gamut with Pro Photo/ROMM images. You can check this using the gamut warning profile on the ICC site.
If you have a Pro Photo RGB image you should just assign the ROMM profile to it. Converting to ROMM RGB should not change anything in the ideal sense but there is the possibility to introduce rounding errors and mismatch black points.
The main difference between the Pro Photo RGB profile and the ROMM RGB profile is the former includes black scaling to zero (as is common with v2 color space and display profiles) and the latter does not (as is required with v4 profiles).
In the duck picture, the reason for the difference is the ROMM profile black is at L*=3 so this is where the lowest blacks land when converting MRC to v2 sRGB (which has the sRGB blacks scaled to L*=0). In this case leaving BPC off is analogous to turning on "Simulate Black Ink" in Photoshop Proof Setup.
All the ACR color space choices are v2 profiles with black scaling. If you want a v4 profile embedded you have to assign it (if you have a corresponding v4 profile) or convert to it.
Both the sRGB and PRM gamuts fit within the ROMM RGB legal encoding range, but if you use a v2 profile with black scaling you should always turn on BPC when combining with a v4 profile. Otherwise the v4 profile will think the v2 profile represents a device with an infinite dynamic range. When BPC is on the Color Engine scales the black point of the source profile to the black point of the destination profile.
The sRGB gamut extends outside the PRM gamut in some places, and the PRM gamut extends outside the sRGB gamut in other places. If you convert using a colorimetric intent in either direction some of the gamut will be clipped. The purpose of the sRGB v4 perceptual transforms is to minimize clipping in both directions.
I can't do this justice here but basically scene-referred images are encodings of the scene colors and output-referred images are encodings of the picture colors on some medium for which the picture colors have been optimized. You can make a scene-referred image by setting the ACR sliders (except the white balance sliders) to zero and the curves tab to linear. You make an output-referred image when you adjust the sliders to non-zero values to make a nice picture as viewed on some medium. For example you might adjust the sliders differently to get the best results printing colorimetrically on glossy photo paper vs. on plain office paper.
Often an important part of the transform to output-referred includes a midtone contrast and saturation boost. While there will likely be some highlight and may be some shadow compression, it is misleading to think of this transform only as a compression to some output medium dynamic range. In some cases the output medium dynamic range is larger than that of the scene.
Usually the transform to output-referred is more complicated than a simple gamma function.
Regardless of the image state (scene-referred or output-referred) the sRGB, Adobe RGB, or Pro Photo RGB nonlinearities will be applied to create the image data that you open into Photoshop.
We are working in the ICC to prepare more information for posting on this topic.

  • Adding a new SAP standard field to complaints result BOL

    Hi Experts,
There is a requirement to add SAP standard field 'Posting date' to Advance search result BOL of complaints.
This field already exists in search BOL and visible on WEB UI advanced search.
The field is added as attribute in result context node of BT120S_CPL/AdvSearchComplRL through wizard.
But, unable to see the values getting populated. Could you please let us know if any code to be written for getting values populated.
    Regards,
    Santosh

    Hi Santosh ,
My previous post was based on the fact that you have added a model attribute. Since you have added the field as a value attribute and you want to use it for querying , then you would have to do the following
    a) Extract the value from the value node.
    b) Add the selection param so that 'posting date' is passed to the GENIL. You can use add selection param method in the Advanced query. Use the name of the field in the BOL & the value as yours.
    c) Get the result & show it on the way you want.
This is same as it would have been when you had a model field. In that case also you would have extracted the value from model node. I see no difference here except that fetching the field. Rest of the steps remain the same if the field is available in BOL for advanced query.
Yes the difference lies in showing it in the WebUI as now you would have to fill this value node manually. If you had a model node , the framework would have done this for you.
But don't base your choice of model/value node on the ease of coding but on the business case.

  • Implement new IDNA2008 standards please!

    Hello Safari / WebKit-Team,
The .de NIC (denic.de) will implement IDNA2008 from 2010-11-16 onwards,
especially allowing for ß (\u00df) in domain names. Hence, the automatic
translation of ß to ss may result in looking up the wrong domain name, allowing
    for spoofing attacks.
(DENIC will run a sunrise period (2010-10-26 to 2010-11-15) during which
holders of domains with ss will be allowed top register the respective ß domain
    in advance.)
    http://www.denic.de/en/domains/internationalized-domain-names/sharp-s.html
ß and ss are not exchangable in German. ss instead of ß is just a makeshift. Germans expect ß to usually just work if
umlauts work (which already do for a while).
    Steps to Reproduce:
    1. Start Safari on OS X Mountain Lion or on iOS
    2. Open the domain "http://www.heß.de" (a family name).
    Expected Results:
Safari will change the "ß" character to "ss" and open "http://www.hess.de" which is a completely different family name (last name).
For example: "Michael Heß" and "Peter Hess".
    Thanks & Regards

The Version you are using is called "Opera Next" or something else and is build new from the scratch using Google's-Engine.

  • I did a fresh install on my computer, but when I tried to sync, it put the new bookmarks (standard firefox ones) onto the sync data instead. Is there any way to recover my bookmarks?

Like the question says, is there any way to recover them?
I can't pull them off my old install since it was erased.

Lets hope that you did not really erase your old profile, you would have had to go a little out of your way to do that. I've never used Sync but you have to have something to Sync to.
Use the following to see if you have more than one profile or your lost bookmarks
    in the bookmarkbackups folder.
Type about:support into the location bar the click on "Open Containing Folder" that will take you to your current profile. The bookmarkbackups folder has 5 backups (.json files) any of which can be restored with Firefox up through restore bookmarks.
It doesn't sound like the install pulled in your old bookmarks, so continuing ...
Sounds like you created a new profile instead of using your existing profile.
Open your profile folder and go up one level to see if you have multiple
    profiles ...
HELP (Alt+H) --> Troubleshooting information... --> "Open Containing Folder"
(or type about:support into the location bar then click on "Open Containing Folder")
note the filename, then go up one level to see if you have additional profile folders.
Check the dates of places.sqlite (new in Fx3) for update date just before you went to Fx4.
Since it is updated each time you close your session that would be a good place to check.
If you find one then note its filename (the profile name is part of the filename) and
then start the Firefox Profile Manager and open with that profile.
To prevent the problem in the future don't let Firefox start up for you after
downloading and installing a new version. Instead exit the install at that
last point, and restart Firefox in your normal manner.
If you really do want to start with a new profile like the one you have, them look in the bookmarkbackups folder of the other profiles and look particularly at the dates and the size of the .json files to find one that you can restore to your current profile -- restoring is complete replacement of what you have for bookmarks.

  • How lync 2013 addressed the new public certification standards

    Dear All,
My AD domain name is "domain.local" .
I’m planning to implement lync 2013 and I need to know how lync 2013 addressed the new certificates standard regarding the non-registered domain name like my domain “Domain.local” ?
So can I generate the certificate for lync services without “.local” domain or my certificate should include my lync servers internal names ?
Or should I consider changing my domain name to domain.com cuz lync certificate should have internal domain names?
BR, Mohamed Wahab "Egypt Cyber Center"

    Hi mohamed.wahab,
For non-domain joined PCs, you need to install the internal root certificate on them.
For mobile phone and tablets, you do not have to install the internal root certificate, because they always connect to the Lync server through Reverse Proxy, regardless of where the origination
    point is—internal or external.

  • PS CS5 Image Display Differs From Used ICC Profile In Win 7

    Hi,
on my Windows 7 Ultimate x64 machine, I just calibrated my Dell SP2309W monitor using an i1DisplayPro and basICColor 5, creating a ICC v2 profile (I am aware of the problems under Windows with ICC v4 profiles).
It created the ICC profile and applied it to be used by Windows. I double checked under COLOR MANAGEMENT that the new ICC profile is being used. Although I can see that the new ICC is being used (desktop appearance changes), there are a few issues I am experiencing:
    (1.) Windows Photo Viewer
The thumbnails in Windpows Explorer look fine (they DO use the new ICC profile), when I double click a jpeg and open the image it DOES NOT use the new ICC profile. When I click the PLAY SLIDESHOW button (starting the slideshow) in the opened image in Windows Photo Viewer, the images DO use the new ICC profile.
    (2.) Internet Browsers
All current internet browser (Firefox, IE, Safari and Chrome) DO use the new ICC profile and display the image correctly.
    (3.) Photoshop CS 5
When I open the same image - that Windows Photo Viewer does not correctly displays (according to the new ICC profile) - in Photoshop CS5, I get the same image display that Windows Photo Viewer gives me (when not thumbnail or not in slideshow mode) - it appears to be the sRGB display.
My color settings in PS CS5 are: North America General Purpose 2 > sRGB IEC 61966-2.1.
When I go to View > Proof Setup > Monitor RGB I get the image display using the new ICC profile.
Why does the image look different in PS than my calibrated monitor should output ?
I was under the impression (please correct me if I am wrong), that the sole purpose for calibrating my monitor was to get a uniform display across (ICC aware) applications. Even when one applies different color spaces to a document in PS, I thought the output on my calibrated screen done by the graphic card should always be according to my calibration and the settings in the ICC profile being used.
What Am I doing wrong or what am I misunderstanding ?
Any help or input is appreciated !
    Thanks.
    - M

    Hello,
A note on monitor calibration: calibrating your monitor will not guarentee that every application will display color correctly, it's more of a step along the pipeline, and for the preview part of a color workflow it's the last step.  Here's how color translation follows for an ICC workflow when previewing to a monitor:
Image Color Numbers > Document Tag or Workspace Profile > Monitor Profile
For non-color managed applications, if the original document is or isn't tagged with a color profile it will be translated directly to the monitor profile anyway.  This is the equivalent in Photoshop of selecting "Monitor" in soft proofing.  Selecting monitor in softproofing will bypass the tagged or workspace profile to translate colors directly through the monitor profile.
For most automatic color managed applications (like Firefox), the image will be translated through the tagged profile and then sent through the monitor profile.  If the image is untagged or the profile is unrecognized, the colors get sent directly to the monitor profile.
For Photoshop, a tagged document will have its profile respected and then sent to the monitor.  An untagged document will be assigned the workspace profile, which acts like a temporary document profile, and then gets sent to the monitor.  This is often why users will notice Photoshop behaves differently from other applications.  It's usually a case of the workspace coming into play.  By default the workspace profile is set to sRGB.  You can change this in Edit > Color Settings.
The purpose of the workspace is originally for printing workflows, as a way of keeping consistant color translations when dealing with both tagged and untagged documents.  For web output workflows it can be useful for viewing everything through sRGB, which is typical of the average monitor output (not so with newer wide-gamut monitors, another source of confusion...) combined with the fact that originally most web browsers were not color managed.  Hence viewing everything through sRGB is pretty close to what most monitors see and what untagged/unmanaged docs will look like.
Monitor calibration is useful only because it brings your monitor output to a "known state".  In traditional workflows the monitor was always a middle-man, a preview device which was useful for getting an idea of what the printed output would look like before you print it.  Since print colorspaces are often smaller than display spaces, it's feasible and useful to narrow down the monitor/display space and calibrate it to a known state, so that even if it doesn't totally match the print, you'll get used to its differences/limitations and they'll be consistent so long as the calibration is maintained.
For web output, your final output is often another user's computer monitor, which can have any form of behavior (most standard monitors are pretty close to sRGB, or use sRGB as an operating system workspace (default monitor profile).  Wide gamuts behave differently, but I'm not sure if there's a particular ICC space that they closely match, or if different wide-gamuts are even that close to each other in their display color spaces.
    Hope this helps!

  • I have a mid-2010 iMac and just purchased a 2TB TC, can't join existing wireless network with AC standard so attached to iMac via ethernet with TC wifi turned off.  How do i access TC now? not showing up in disk utility or on desktop. working fine with TM

I have a mid-2010 iMac and just purchased a 2TB TC, I just found out that it can't join existing wireless network with new AC standard so attached to iMac via ethernet with TC's wifi turned off.  How do i access TC now? not showing up in disk utility or on desktop. It is working fine with TM.  My cheeper seagate drives etc kept crashing, so i didnt trust cheeper back up options anymore.  Connected those drives to TM via firewire and could see the drives and access them.
Also, I didn't want to bridge TC with my new fios router that I paid 100 dollars for, to get N speed and also paying 10 dollars more a month for fast speed.  I heard that bridging slows down everything and then there can be port issues with mail etc.  I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast. Getting over 50mbs downloads and over 30mbs uploads.  Plus everything in my home it connected to my fios router, airport express for music streaming, two apple tvs, vuezone camer system.  I really didn't want to monkey around too much with my system.  But are there other options to connect the new TC.  Can't find info anywhere for this and called apple who gave me the info above.  after hanging up, i see that i cant access my TC and I am wondering if i would have to reset it to turn wifi on again to make changes to the drive, turn off blinking light  or repair it in disk utility if it should become corrupted.
For other with similar issues i did solve some other problems: when i connected it to my ethernet port on my iMac wifi stopped working.  Found that I had to turn off the ethernet in the system>network screen, but then TM didn't see the TC so i restarted after changes and then it saw it.
Now a rant.  I can't believe in this wireless age that Apple would make a product that cant join a wireless net work.  The apple rep said i could return it and look for the previous TC that would join an existing wireless network.  Are we going backwards?
    Thanks!
    lennydas

Ok... it is getting a bit clearer but there are still some questions.
I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast.
I was assuming airport in this statement in your first post meant the TC or the Express.. but I now realise we are still in the mass confusion stage where apple calls everything wireless an airport. So what you mean is the airport internal card of the computer??
Also, I didn't want to bridge TC with my new fios router that I paid 100 dollars for, to get N speed and also paying 10 dollars more a month for fast speed.  I heard that bridging slows down everything and then there can be port issues with mail etc.
    I think this is mistaken.
Putting the TC in bridge mode plugged into your FIOS will not slow the network.. nor will it cause mail or port issues.. in bridge the TC is just a fancy WAP and switch plus the network hard drive.
If the computer is close it will be faster than the FIOS.
You can run both wireless networks with different names.. so it is clear which is which. But you can also setup roaming so the computers themselves pick which is the best wireless.
I tried extending the wireless net work and tried joining wireless network, but the TC kept crashing and I had to keep resetting the TC.  the Apple support person said these, extend wireless network and joint wireless network, are no longer a connection option with the new TC because of the new AC protocol.
    Thanks again!
You cannot extend to a non-apple wireless router.
You cannot use join a wireless network because when you do the ethernet ports will be cut off.
But that has not changed.. I don't think Apple support is correct.. there has been no change with the AC model.. it is simply a fact that apple routers do not work in join wireless mode other than as a dumb client. The same applies to AC as to the earlier version.. but I have asked another person to check this.
Join in the express is the only apple router that still allows an ethernet connection.
For now you best use of the TC is bridged to the FIOS. Wireless you can sort out between several options.

  • How to set up a csf file in Bridge from my printer-supplied icc?

We are a small magazine sending PDF files to a printer out of state (printing on a heat-set web press with a newish stocatto system). We are PC using CS2.
We have gotten inconsistent color from our printer using Adobe recommended color settings in CS2, and so our printer has just supplied us with their icc profile. I have loaded it in all apps but do not know how to load it into Bridge so that Bridge says all is synchronized. I have asked our printer for a csf file but they do not have one or know what I am talking about.
Do you have any suggestions? Can I make my own csf file using the new icc profile?

    Dorinda,
the best place for defining color setting files is IMO
Photoshop by Edit > Color Settings.
    Examples:
RGB: sRGB or AdobeRGB(1998) (may be called aRGB).
CMYK: SWOP or ISOCoated or the profile as supplied by
    your printer.
Grayscale: Dot Gain 20% (for Coated) or for instance
Black Ink ISO Coated, which is derived from ISOCoated.
    Never a 'Gamma'.
