  • TV on the IdeaCentre A600?

I recently purchased an IdeaCentre A600.  I made the purchase because Lenovo was touting the IdeaCentre as a computer and a TV.  But apparently I had a different definition of “TV.”  The biggest disappointment was the total lack of documentation and support for this product.  There is virtually none of either.
I am new to Microsoft Vista, but after a couple of weeks of exploration I found the Microsoft Media Center.  I followed the TV set-up Wizard and actually got a TV signal.  But the picture was about 2 by 3 inches.  When I clicked “Next,” I expected to see a full size image.  But all I got was as error message indicating that there was no “IR hardware” installed.  I had no idea what IR hardware was, but I knew right away it must be important.
I called the vendor’s support first.  They explained that “IR” stood for infrared and that all I needed to do was install the most recent drivers.  It was no surprise that that did not work.
I contacted Lenovo support and after a lengthy discussion, the support person told me that I apparently needed IR cables, which is exactly where I started.  She didn’t know what they were, or what they were for, but I should contact my cable provider and they should be able to help me.  I contacted Comcast support and the support person told me that I could get IR cables anywhere, even Wal-Mart.  She didn’t know what they were, or how they worked, but I should have no trouble finding them.
I feel that I have made no progress here.  It is apparently a problem with a simple solution, but I can’t seem to find anyone who knows what that solution is.  Apparently everyone knows the answer but me and the product support teams.  It is extremely discouraging to deal with a manufacturer that puts a product on the market without any documentation or support.  Tomorrow, I will go to Wal-Mart.  Perhaps they can help.  PS, this web site needs help.

I have a B500, and yes, there's literally no documentation as to how to get the TV working.
Getting the TV working for me was pretty simple. First thing: make sure your drivers are up to date. The driver that shipped on my B500 did not work properly, and I downloaded the "newer" Yuan driver (which appears to Windows as an ATI Card). From there, I was able to just hook the cable from my wall to the computer (I skipped the cable box).
Note, in Windows Media Center, if you have a newer machine, you can get HD channels. However, you have to add the 'Digitial" tuner seperately from the Analog tuner (even though it's the same chip).
From there, you should be able to get TV working.

    Jinchun Chen: ""
Richard Mueller: "Good topic. Grammar needs work. "Caution" states undocumented stored procedure is safe for production, but later states it is not."
Ed Price: "Great article. We should include the technology in the title. Good descriptions, and great References!"
JS: "Although the outlined solution is interesting and shows the public the usage of the "new" system views finding the right dependencies, it is not recommended to describe the usage of undocumented features such as sp_msforeachdb
as there are alternatives, especially in this scenario. You could generate a query using the sys.databases view and let it print out the database name along with the use statement. In addition to this and as the statement has to be run with a high privileged
account as schema information is secured as well, it should be made safe to SQL injection. In many case in the statements there is just a concatentation of values used. You can easily inject code in here, Also make sure that names / object identifiers are
quoted with [] in order to allow also special characters like spaces in the names"

Integrating Power View with SharePoint Server 2010/2013 - Multidimensional Mode
    RB: "nice walkthrough"
Ed Price: "Great depth in the procedure steps! It's similar to another article (see comment), but it's still a good addition. Good use of images!"
MR: "This article explains how to install Power View on SharePoint but do not explain that Reporting Services is the tool required for Power View to work - the initial setup is required only whether SSRS has not been installed before.
Otherwise, it has to be upgraded and then the shortcut can work."
Also worth a mention were the other entries this month:

MR: "Clarify this behavior is only for Multidimensional models. Moreover, you can handle that by changing configuration settings in Multidimensional project"

  • How can create Apple ID with new domains such as: .pics, .center, .guru?

    Hi Apple Support,
I can't create new Apple ID with new domain email such as: .pics, .center, .guru, ... So, please update or help me fix that problem, thank you!

Why are you creating another AppleID?

  • New page defaults to picas even when changed to mm in unit preferences

everytime i open a new document in indesign CC the new document dialog box shows the page measurments as picas even thought i would have changed it to mm in the unit preferences. It just reverts back again.
how can i stop this from happening. i have been able to come up with some work arounds but its just time consuming to do everytime i create a new document.
its really frustrating as i my work is mostly for print and i alway use mm.

Change the preferences with no documents open.
All new documents will have those preferences.

  • New "IdeaCentre". 15% Restocking Fee - $45 US for nothing.

FRYs, where I bought a brand new Lenovo IdeaCentre, has a 15%restoocking charge if a computer is returned opened.
Since this POS didn't work from the first moment it was powered-up, it's going back to the store where I'll pay $45 US for this experience.
Pretty good deal for FRYs, they just need to keep reselling this same brick.
Lesson learned: if I buy Lenovo, better pay the extra money for the extended warranty - but wait, for that kind of money I can afford a quality product instead.
I'm happy for you folks who've had a better experience.

Well, here is where I'm at... and I've commented on a few posts this evening... I'm heading back toward the iPhone path. As much as I wanted to throw some money the android way and as much as I wanted to learn this OS I don't think I can put up with any more frustration right now. I did have some of that with Apple when they said their new iOS5 would work on the earlier phones (3GS) and iPad 1 but that upgrade made my devices pretty bad. Slow to respond, laggy, bigger battery drain, etc. But anyway... the 4S my wife is now using (on VZW) is quite snappy and picks up a good signal. It is getting 3 bars where the GNex usually had none or maybe 1 but never lasted. Now add this line of thinking: If you buy your iPhone from the Apple store I think your customer service experience might be better as well. And I mean if you have issues with the phone. It seems to me that with VZW you get 1 chance to return (+fee) and the second phone you're stuck with. At least that is what I was told. I'm assuming with Apple they will exchange the phone (no fee) and if you do have problem they will at least hook it up and run diagnostics right there in front of you. I had them do that for me on a 3GS. Again, I'm not sold completely on either OS and really wanted to give android a try. Just not sure its time to play beta tester for the 4G network or this hardware. I may wait to see what this new LG Spectrum looks like. Although everywhere I read there are few people who like phones from LG. But the specs indicate it will have a great screen, removable battery and upgradable memory for starters. Good luck getting things worked out.

  • Fix the new version ( drawing ..pics) and add an ...

First really like the new version of skype
with two WP that had messenger installed the drawing and pics potions were greyed out
After a lot of pain and agravation it was messenger that needed to be uninstalled on both phones.
Guys you need to just let people add a alias ie skype name for a MS accounts as finding people is a pain.  Or have a option to send a invite to a email address which links uniquely to you account.
searching for people and getting 50 hits for their name and with incomplete profiles make it impossible to identify the real person......
You need to make finding and connecting with people easier. nothing is obvious make it so
end rant but you need to take this seriously.

It was listed as messenger in apps list with Lightening bolt icon
I removed it from mine 1520 and and brothers 920 and now it works.
once messenger disappears in user linked accounts then they un-grey.

  • Can Arch News items become Announcements automatically?

If you take even the briefest glance around here today, it seems clear that not everyone who uses the forum reads Arch News. I'm wondering would it be possible for new Arch News articles to automatically trigger a new Announcement thread here?
This is an idea, btw, not a request, and I'm as guilty as anyone else of not reading the news as often as I should. If it dies here, so be it.

I do not read the frontpage of ArchLinux often and I may skip reading the forum sometimes too for a period. So I added my email to the mailinglist, pressented along with the news, but then I got tons of mail, so I had du unregister.
    So I wish for a news-mailing-list.
It should be possible using arch, without hanging out on the forum all the time.
Oh, one more (better)idea, I'm creative today
 If no mailinglist is made, maybe pacman could pressent all new news since last time you used it? Then people cant miss impotent messages!

  • To Brian Z: Your new iCal calendars announcement link is broken!

I couldn't find a way to IM/PM you on this system, so I thought I'd let you know that the link to the new iCal calendars in your announcement (http://discussions.apple.com/ann.jspa?annID=131) is broken (takes us to a generic apple page).
    Steve

    typehead,
Just use iCal>File>Export...for each one of your calendars on the G4, and then on the MBP use iCal>File>Import...for those .ics files.
    ;~)
