New iMac 2.33 GHz w/2GB RAM VERY SLOW... slower than my non-intel iMac

So I just purchased a new Intel iMac with a 2.33GHz processor and 2GB of RAM. Seems like this thing should scream. I ran Migration Assistant upon starting the thing up in order to load on my 25ish software applications, 10,000 photos and numerous documents. Everything looks pretty good except that the computer hangs like crazy. On my old iMac which is only 2.0 GHz and 1GB of RAM I can have Photshop, Keynote, iPhoto, Mail and Safari all open at once, switching betwen them in order to get my work done. It's never been a problem. For some reason however, this new machine doesn't seem to be able to handle such tasks. Even the finder is slow. I'll click on a folder and it will take seconds for the items in that folder to show up. I just don't get it. The only thing that's faster is that the system boots much faster than my old iMac. Is it that all of this software isn't written for the intel chip? Is there some way in which I can test my system in order to be sure it's operating at full steam? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Ben

How long have you actually had the Mac? How many hours has it been actually active?
When an iMac is brand new Spotlight has to index the entire HD. Not just the Mac OS and Apple software pre-installed, but everything you have migrated as well (10,000 photo)! If it doesn't have some quiet time, a few hours depending on how many Gigs it needs to index, to accomplish this on it's own then the whole system will run slow as you force it to do what you want to do and it tries to do what it wants to do, both at the same time.
There is also plenty of evidence that Migrating more than your personal account and personal files, photos, music, videos, docs, etc. can indeed mess things up. The majority of PPC apps run OK with Rosetta, but there are a few incompatibles. It is almost always best to do fresh installs of PPC apps from install dicks or fresh internet downloads. Also have you checked if there are Universal binary updates available for any of your PPC apps.
Kappy (the Cobbler!) wrote a pretty good Migration user tip article. Maybe you should familiarize yourself and see if you made a mistake or two.

  • Is a PowerBook G4 still good for what I need it for? 17" 1.67 Ghz CPU, 2GB RAM. Need for word processing, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, Sculptris, other programming software., Internet browsing, and light video editing.

Powerbook G4 1.67 ghz, 2Gb ram, OS X 10.5 Leopard. Is it good enough for word processing, Dreamweaver, flash, sculptris, some programming software, Internet browsing, and some basic video editing? It also includes iLife and iWork, what is actually included in these packages?

This is the fastest of the G4 Powerbooks which was a good performer when it was new. Graphics intense programs will not perform well by todays standard. In addition the up to date software programs need an Intel processor and more RAM. iLife includes iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand. iWork includes Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.

  • First Impressions: New MacBook Air 13" - 128GB HD - 2GB RAM

Thought I'd post some initial impressions here for those who are asking questions about memory, heat issues, noise, hinges, hard drive space etc.
This week I purchased the 13" MacBook Air, 128GB HD, 2GB RAM config in Apple Retail store. Ultimately a couple days later I ended up returning it and ordering the 2.13GHz upgrade, 256GB HD and 4GB RAM via Apple Store online. I'll tell you why at the end of this post.
    Initial impressions:
    - Gorgeous, well-designed machine. Feels great to use. Very solid.
    - I chose the 13" over the 11" because the resolution seemed slightly higher, it was easier on my eyes and the 11" tended to bounce a bit when used in my lap while the 13" did not.
    - I used Dropbox as my drive in the cloud for Documents, Photos and Videos (have been doing that for a while) as it allows you to get away with a smaller drive footprint.
    - I did NOT yet have MS Office installed.
    - For a mobile laptop, the new MBA cannot be beat. It's sleek and solid. No heat issues. Fan rarely came on if at all.
    - I was using about 38GB of the 128GB drive. So I was glad I did not buy the 64GB 11", although I really, really wanted to like that smaller one.
    - I installed a RAM monitoring app in it to see how much of the 2GB would be used under normal use (is there even such a thing anymore?). Without using MS Office, just surfing the web and using default OS apps, the lowest amount of RAM I had available was 700MB, so roughly 1.3GB was being used up in the worst scenarios. Despite this, it zipped along with multiple browser tabs open, uber-fast bootup and shutdown and really long battery life.
    - I appreciated the fact that the 13" has 2 hours longer battery life than the 11". Ultimately that 7 hours played a big factor in why I bought the 13" instead of the 11".
    - Bottom line? Definitely rate this a BUY. In spite of the omission of the backlit keyboard, it's a good machine; though I would NOT recommend it as a replacement for a MacBook Pro. It is a mobile computer. Fully functional, but I would not do heavy video editing or graphics work on it. For everything else it's superb and feels wonderful in your hands.
Why I ultimately took it back to the store.
I liked using it so much that I figured I may be using it more than my MacBook Pro, and as such wanted to max out the chip speed, RAM and HD space on it. Currently as of this post date you cannot get the higher performance MBAs in-store. You can only order them direct through Apple.
I ordered the 2.13GHz MBA with 4GB RAM and 256GB HD. It takes 2-3 bus days for them to configure it at Apple and another 2-3 bus days to ship to you so should get it next week.
For anyone considering buying this machine, I give it a strong thumbs up. For most users, the 13" 128GB and 2GB RAM should be fine. If you're looking to replace an existing MBP (wouldn't recommend it), you probably want to order through Apple and get the upgrades.
    HTH,
    Adam

After calling the customer service they told me I should receive before the 8 of November that makes 18 days!
Adam, that's nothing. When Apple introduced the liquid-cooled PM G5s, we had to wait over 2 months before Apple shipped them! They may halted production to fix the apparent video flaws a lot of people are experiencing. The longer you wait, the less chance you may get a lemon.

  • TS3276 My e-mail service is very slow. Even if I rebuild after opening a new message it resorts back to it's very slow service, any suggestions?

My e-mail very very slow to download and open. I have tried rebuilding my e-mail account and after opening one or two messages at a faster speed, it slows back down. Orginally when I purchased the computer and set it up it was great.

Thanks for the additional details msims1985. Verizon Wireless does not throttle however, we do implement network optimization. You can view more information here http://vz.to/17U9bZd The good news is 4G devices are not impacted! Per the details you provided it seems as if it is a device issues. When you received a replacement did you receive a replacement sim? If not, I suggest a new sim. You can receive a sim at a direct store location, online or I can send one. Please share. Thank you.

  • Can Lion run on Mac Mini with 1.83 GHz and 2GB RAM?

    Hey guys!
at first, sorry for my may bad english.
After years of windows strangulation i want to upgrade to a mac. but, there is a tiny problem: i dont have enough money for a new mac mini cause i'm a student und things like that.
But i have enough money to buy me a mac on eBay . Maybe a "old" mac mini, but its a mac. On eBay germany (my homeland) i found a few mac mini's there in my budget. There's the Mac mini 2.1 with 1,83GHz and 1 GB RAM. So, i read that that dont work anyway because the RAM is to low.
Now my question: when i buy such a machine and upgrade the RAM to 2GB, would Lion run on it?
    Sincere regards, Manuel from germany.
Oh and Steve, if you read that, that's fine by me if you want to donate me a old mac from you.

You are in luck.  The Mac Mini 2,1 is the oldest Mac Mini that with an upgrade to 2GB or 3GB will run Lion. That said. you'll want to purchase Snow Leopard while it is still available, if the machine hasn't yet been upgraded to Snow Leopard, as that is your key to get Lion installed after the RAM is upgraded.  This is a user to user forum, so it is unlikely "Steve" will be viewing your post.

  • IMac i3 intel, 4 GB Ram very slow

I have an ongoing issue with my iMac. It runs very slowly and indeed launching new items takes forever. It is painful.
I've gone through various different cleaning processes (clean my mac used) plus some. Although this is a good habit it frees space it is making no headway at all on the speed issue. Can somebody tell me from the details below if I have an underlying issue from an app running or am doing something wrong. There seem to be no processes failing it is just poor. Safari in particular needs a good 5 minutes notice before I can use it.
    Thank you in advance.

You are all being really helpful. I am making progress but slowly. Here is the latest EtreCheck after unnistalling the CleanMyMac software, I didn't re paste the EtreCheck results after that process.
All users (I have 4) now have only skype (x2 users) or skype and dropbox (x2 users) anthing else has been removed from login items.
WD smartware is causing a problem. I cam with the big my book drive I use for Time Machine, I probably don't need the software so located the uninstaller. It won't work. Continually stops working and advises me it will shut down the utility.
I would like to keep Chrome but have stopped it loading automatically. As Android phone users, it helps to have easy access to google profile and drive.
Blackberry and Tom Tom I have not uninstalled as my husband needs both for work but the sneaky utility that RIM place in login items has been removed for all users. We may be able to get rid of them shortly.
The motorola stuff - I can't even find!!
Here's the new EtreCheck... Anymore suggestions would be appreciated. I will trawl the WD site to solve that issue.

  • Brand new macbook pro 2.3 2x2gb/320 is way slower than my old pc when on the web?why? I want to love this mac but am think of returning it please help. Is my ram maxed it appears i have 4gb?

I just bought this macbook pro, if im watching a sport event and doing something else on the net it is so slow moving back and forth between sites with constant freezes and shutdowns. my old sony viao was much much faster.
It appears I have 4 gb of ram my receipt says 2 x 2gb. and when I check using the apple icon in upper left corner it says 4 gb. is this my max? is there anyway to speed this up? I will buy more memory if needed, if not Im returning this comp as Im very unhappy with it.
ps. Im ****** that my pc is better, i so want to be a mac.
    please advise

It's possible the DNS setting your ISP is using are interfering. Although your PC works OK Macs can be sensitive to DNS settings. Here is a MacWorld DNS Troubleshooting article that explains the issue and below is how to fix it.
    1. System preferences
    2. Network
    3. Click Advanced
    4. Click DNS tab
    5. Click + sign
    6. Add 208.67.222.222
    7. Click + sign
    8. Add 208.67.220.220
    9. Click OK.
    10. Exit System Preferences
    11. Try out your MBP and report what happened.

  • New 15" 2.2 GHz is heating up very hot and battery life is very short

I just bought a new 15 in MBP and the thing heats up so hot I can't hold it on my lap and all I am doing is sufing the web and downloading apps for my iPad.  I am using a 3G USB modem and with a full charge am only getting  an hour and a half of battery life max!  Is this normal?  Or should I send this thing back to the store?  Thanks for any info you can give me.

this happened to me a while back, even after replacing my battery. what might be happening is that there is a print job waiting in the que which could be hogging up a lot of CPU (why this happens is beyond me)
anyway, the way i fixed my issue was going into the activity monitor and sorting the processes by CPU load. if you see something taking up 95% of it, try and quit the process. my battery life jumped back up to 3 hours after that

  • Upgraded to 2gb and seem slower than stock 512mb

i have a macbook pro 1.83... it is registering on the "about this mac"
    any ideas
    macbook pro 1.83   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi,
Since no one knows how well your system install is, or how well it ran prior to installing the ram, try running the Combo Updater for 10.4.9......
Re-apply combo updater for various issues At the risk of playing like a broken record, we cannot overstate the value of re-applying the Mac OS X combination updater as a solvent for various issues apparent after using the standard, delta (adjacent version-to-version) updater to migrate to Mac OS X 10.4.9. The delta updater is automatically used by Software Update if your current system iteration is 10.4.8. Re-applying the combo updater overwrites potentially problem-causing files that were not replaced by the delta update. Download link is as follows:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1049comboupdateintel.html
Also, Repair Permissions after all the updates. Disk Utility is located in Applications-Utilities.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DiskUtility/10.5/en/duh17.html
Then I would like you to do a PMU reset, and PRAM reset. When resetting PRAM let it chime four or more times even though Apple says twice. Here are instructions....
    Reset PRAM NVRAM...

    Reset PMU....

Also, make sure that the nstalled ram is showing up correctly in System Profiler. Did you buy the correct spec ram?

  • New iMac running very slow

Just bought my wife the new iMac (20" 2.4GHz). Connected her old G4 Mini in firewire mode. Transferred her applications and files. Everything is working but the computer is very slow. Much slower than my version 2 macbook. It surfs so slow and Safari has locked up several times. This is on her regular websites not something new. All her apps on the mini were the PowerPC variety and not universal binaries. Could this be an issue? I had Firefox that was optimized for the G4 processor on the mini. It worked on the iMac but was slow. I just installed the latest universal binary Firefox and it is faster but the hard drive is thrashing constantly. Now it only has 1 GB of RAM (I will upgrade) but still, I am only running 1 app... Was importing from a G4 a bad idea?
    Karl

    I ACTUALLY think so!
I have the same iMac you have and it's SUPER fast! and I also have just 1GB Ram... but I'll tell you what I did...
First, I went online and got *Universal drivers* for my *Scanner, Wacom pen tablet* etc... then I got the Universal versions of *CockTail, SuperDuper, HandBreak, Stuffit, Adium, Firefox*... time consuming I know but if they were AVAILABLE for Intel... it didn't seem to be a good idea to SAVE time... just an afternoon that maybe would have cost me a couple days trying to fix future compatibility issues...
After doing that, I installed ONLY three *PPC Apps*, the ones I really need: *Photoshop CS, Flash and Dreamweaver 8*... actually my website is all in Flash, I only use Dreamweaver as a FTP program to upload my files...
Both Flash and Photoshop will run under ROSETTA... even taking lots of RAM, they still run faster than in my old iMac G5 with 2GB Ram... *duo to the Intel processor*...
At least I know that ALL DRIVERS are the original Intel... the iMac is super fast.. I just moved from ATT&T (disgusting 300 KBPS) to ComCast reaching *5 MBPS* on both the *G4 mini* and the *2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac*...
Such a great experience, the large clear screen... a fast machine and a great connection...
If I were you I'd spend a Sunday *re-installing Leopard* and looking for the *Intel version of some Apps*... you don't have to sit in front of the computer all day... you can load the installation DVD and open a beer and come back after a while and download Leopard updates (and open another beer...) cook and listen to a good music... do little by little one day!
If I have a major problem I always re-install the OS... I can't work on a sluggish machine! Better a day doing it than suffering for a LONNNNNNNNNG time!
    Cheers!
    : )

  • New iMacs slow to open programs compared to previous model?

    Hi all,
I have noticed something while looking at the new iMacs on display in store:
While a previous-model (just superseded) 24" 3.0g ghz dual-core opens iMovie in 4 seconds, the new models repeatedly take 40 seconds or more to do the very same thing. On different machines...in different stores...same thing happens.
When questioned why, the assistant looked at me uncomfortably and said "Yes, I have learned Apple has supplied us with demo machines installed with the incorrect display drivers..." Huh? Demo machines? Wrong display drivers?
I think he was trying to have a lend of me...surely (a) Apple doesn't supply demo machines to the outlets and, (b) they wouldn't install graphics drivers separately to the rest of the system software.
Anyway...has anyone else noticed the slow performance of the new iMacs when opening programs?
    Cheers.

myhighway, what's your point in relation to my original observation?
What I was saying was that it was interesting that the new models were - in my experience - quite a bit slower than the older model. I had experienced this in two different stores. Had anyone noticed/experienced this and what could be the reason? I just thought the sales guys explanation was a bit flaky at best. I was making a simple observation...no biggy.
Whatever the reason for whatever Apple does (who cares?) it was interesting to note that the newer models appeared slower than the old.
Oh and by the way, I have been a very proud Mac owner since my first in 2003. Will never buy anything else but a Mac now, unless I really have to. So I am already - well and truly - a mac convert.

  • IMac 2 GHz Intel Core Duo with 2GB RAM

The Internet is frequently very slow.  I am hard wired to the TimeWarner Motorola cable modem, but also have a new router with 5 GHz that has a Firewire port.  Would my Internet speed increase substantially by hard wiring to the router by Firewire?
My MacBook with 4GB RAM is much faster via a wireless connection.
Thanks very much for any ideas or comments.

Unfortunately, connecting your iMac by Firewire directly to a router which then connects to the cable modem will Not increase the speed of your Interent connection relative to directly connecting your iMac to the cable modem.  Your iMac's network speed is at your ISP's delivered maximum directly through the cable modem.  All the router would add is the ability to share the cable modem's  output signal  among multiple connected computers. I believe you are experiencing the fact that the internal hardware (CPU, RAM, etc.) of your older iMac may be slower in processing the ISP's internet signal than your more powerful MacBook.
    Hope this helps:)
