New Imac 24 inch wont start up

Hi
I just got my new 24 inch imac 2 weeks ago and suddenly it started making weird clicking noises while the screen saver was on and wouldnt respond when i tried to move the mouse or input something in the keyboard.
So i pushed the power button until it shut down. Now when i try and start it up it starts but doesnt even get to the part where the gong sounds and then nothing else happens. basically the screen is black and that white sleep light comes on and stays on. I can hear the hard drive spin up so i dont think that is dead. Im guessing the logic board died.. Anyone have any suggestions before i call apple? anyone had the same problem? thanks for any feedback!
Dan

Ok that was a scary moment. i figured out the problem. the imac is alive!
I added more RAM this morning and actually when i first put it in the same thing happened, it wouldnt go pass the opening gong sound, but then i tried to push the RAM in more snugly and it started up ok. What i think happened is the RAM became loose and fell out of place as it is facing downward.
Now, has anyone else experienced this problem? And i found that it was hard to feel when the RAM is actually in place. There is no feeling or clicking sound. Anyone added RAM themselves and found it hard or has it fallen out of place? Should i contact apple if this keeps happening?
And as this happened, has it damaged my computer? As its like someone pulling a piece of hardware out while the computer is still running right...
thanks for any feedback!!
Dan

  • Using new iMAC 27 inch as a monitor for Macbook Pro/Air

Can the new iMac 27 inch be used as a monitor?  If so, while it's being used as a monitor connected to a macbook pro/air, will the iMac USB ports work and the camera for facetime?  Planning on using the laptop in clamshell mode and stored away.

The new 27-inch iMac can be used as an external display for other Macs with Thunderbolt (Early 2011 and newer MacBooks Pro, and Mid 2011 and newer MacBooks Air). See > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302
As far as I know, you can't use the camera (I may be wrong), but you can use the USB ports only for the iMac, not for the MacBook Pro or MacBook Air. If you want both features, you have to buy the LED Cinema Display or the Thunderbolt Display

  • New iMac 27-inch: 3.4GHz Periferal questions

I am considering this new iMac, 27-inch: 3.4GHz. I have a late 2009 mac pro 8 core 2.26GHz with 6GB of Ram and is loaded with SATA hard drives. I have a lot of video on the HDs and want to see if
    1. is an inexpensive way or a JOB array so I can access my data via dual thunderbolt.
    2. I have a FW800/ESATA 1TB external drive that I want to access.
    3. I also have a 30 inch cine display from 2006
    4. Finally if have a Presonus FW800 Firestudio that I need to interface
I know this is a lot, but is there an all in one thunderbolt to FW, ESATA and monitor adapter.
I also want to know if anyone can speculate on how much faster this new iMac will be compared to my 2009 mac pro. I am not ready to pay the money for the new Mac Pro, because I don't of a lot of video editing any longer and read a review that the iMac can handle so pretty heavy video editing.
    Thanks in advance.

Daisy chain the two FireWire 800 devices and connect them to one Thunderbolt port with this http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD464ZM/A/apple-thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapte r?fnode=51
Then find the correct adapter for your display(I don't know what the cine display uses or I'd link to it) and connect it to the other thunderbolt port.
Seems easy to me but I may be missing something?

  • New iMac  shutting down and starting up randomly

My new iMac shuts down and starts up at random (over and over again usually in the first few minutes of start up). I ran a test with the TechTool Deluxe and the test involving "video" failed (all other tests passed). What do I do now? Help!!
    Thank you!

Welcome to Discussions - if your iMac is new, it's an intel and you can post on their forum, they'll be able to he you better. However, your first thought should be to call Apple, you have 90 days of free telephone help, and a year's warranty. Since what you are describing sounds like a hardware problem, even if you 90 days are up, call Apple (they will provisionally charge your credit card, but will remit the charge if the problem is hardware related). They will take care of the problem.

  • Suitable ethernet cable for my new Imac 27-inch iMac 3.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 and old imac 1 GHZ PowerPC G4

I am looking for a Suitable ethernet cable for my new Imac 27-inch iMac 3.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 (Mavericks 10.9.4) & old imac 1 GHZ PowerPC G4 (10.4.11) for transfering files, documents, photos into my new intel mac from my old power PC imac.
Can anyone please advise me which suitable ethernet cable would be suitable for tasks.
    Many thanks
    Niall

Note, the iMac G4 1 Ghz only supports 10/100 base-T.  Firewire is up to 4 faster with a cable such as this one:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/HA833ZM/A/belkin-firewire-800400-9-pin6-pin-ca ble-2-m66-ft
    and adapted to this one:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD464ZM/A/apple-thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapte r
    http://www.macsales.com/ may offer cheaper cables.
And since you are migrating from a G4, be sure to make your files portable to newer data formats before transferring.  Old Appleworks/Clarisworks files are not compatible:

  • Does the new iMac (27 inche) have thunderbolt in-put?

Im planning to buy the new iMac 27 inche, and I'm wondering if you can use it to play ps3, Xbox 2013, bluray player ext... With thunderbolt to hdmi cable!

I believe the source of the video needs to also have a Thunderbolt port, so it goes from a Thunderbolt port to the iMac's Thunderbolt port.

  • Screen Problem on my new iMac 27 inch

Can someone tell me how to solve this prblm?
I just bought my New imac 27 inch and am facing this kind of prblm... small black dots everywhere

You have 90 days of free AppleCare telephone support with any new Mac. Give AppleCare a call immediately. In addition your screen shots cannot be seen, in order to take a screen shot Shift - Command - F4 and capture the portion of the screen you want. Then use the camera icon in the reply box to this post to attach the file and place it where you want.
Edit: I see you removed the shots now, try again using the instructions above.

  • Brand new iMac 24 inch does not start

I went to best buy and bought the 24 inch 2.66 GHz iMac. We loved it when the apple guy gave us a demo. I brought the brand new iMac home and set it up. Pushed the power button - IMac does not power on. Tried diff options like changing plug socket, extension cord, removed and replaced power supply from back of iMac, but didnt work.
After an hour, I took the thing back to Best buy and they replaced it with a new one. Now this new one started right away and we really love this computer. Browed until late night, put it on sleep before going to sleep. Woke up in the morning, checked email and did some more browsing before I put it back to sleep and went to take a shower. After I come back and try to turn it ON, it wont turn ON. No matter what I did except this time I did not remove the power supply from the back of the Mac.
I called in for apple support as I was extremely concerned. The support guy asked me to hold the power button for 5 secs and try to power it back again. Nothing, didnt work. Next he asked me to remove all connections as well as the power supply from the back of the Mac and then turn it on. Lo and behold, came back up.
I asked the support guy as to what the heck is the problem and if this type problem has been reported earlier - he said he cannot comment on that. I really like this computer, but I am concerned as to its reliability. Anyone had similar problems? What was the problem and what did you do?

What the guy did was have you reset the SMC, the System Management Controller. It controls things like startups, shutdowns and sleeping.
Is the iMac plugged directly into a three prong wall outlet or are you using an extension cord or a cheat adapter? If you are using an extension cord, then it needs to be a proper three pronged utility cord and not a simple cord with a cheat adapter.

  • Imac g5 17" Wont Start Up ?

my imac g5 recently wouldnt start up so i took it to apple and i hav a new power supply put in it and i took it home plugged it in pressed the power button and still isnt powering up
need help as i dont no what to do ?

Since you said you took it to Apple and they replaced the
power supply, I would assume they tested the machine
before they gave it back to you.
That being said, have you plugged something else into the
outlet that your Imac is plugged into to see if the
    outlet is working?
Move the Imac to a new location and see if it powers up.
If it still wont power up, take it back to Apple and
have them power it up in front of you in their shop.

  • How to download Adobe Premiere pro CS5 for windows to my new imac 27 inch

How to download Adobe Premiere pro CS5 for windows to my new imac 27 inch

IMHO Windows would be the place to start.
Why do you want to load CS5 for Windows?
Adobe does produce a version of CS5 that runs on OS X so that it would not be necessary for you to have to screw around with Windows. Personally that would be the way to go and avoid the hassles of Windows.

  • Migrating from old G4 15-inch Flat Panel to new iMac 24-inch 2.16GHz

Just purchased a refurbed 24" iMac with 2.16GHz core duo from Apple. Currently work on 15-inch flat panel 800MHz PowerPC G4 iMac using 10.2.8. Main applications are Photoshop v.7.0.1, Final Draft 6, and Office v.10.1.8. All important data is archived on three external OWC Mercury firewire drives. What is the most efficient, least problematic way to migrate? Or am I better off avoiding migration, installing latest Intel-friendly Photoshop, Office, and Final Draft software, and dragging select image files, and documents from external drives to new desktop? Also, how can I easily transfer my old iTunes/iPhoto/iMovie libraries over to new iMac from external drives without doing a migration? Thanks!

  • Buying New Imac 27 inch

    Hi all
I am looking for input into what Imac i should get, at the moment i have a Imac 24 inch but its getting old and I need to get a new one so here is what i need it for.
I use my desktop mostly for photography and I use Photoshop CC and Lightroom 5 I will not use it to play games but the photos I import from my camera is 36 million pixels at a time, I also use it for Skype and Facetime also all my music.
Hope I have explained enough and I only use the computer to do my hobbies but dont know the ins and outs of them so the more help I get the better it will be
    Thanks to all in advance

Just about any 27" will work, if you are buying new (refurbs are available) I'd recommend getting a Fusion drive to improve performance. I'd also recommend upgrading the RAM to 16GB or more.  You can easily upgrade the RAM yourself, buy from a reliable source such as OWC (www.macsales.com) or Crucial.
Also when the new machine arrives,  you will be using Setup Assistant, remember to migrate from your old iMac to the new one. Use your Time Machine or bootable clone backup to do this. Instructions can be found at:
    http://pondini.org/OSX/SetupLion.html
Good luck and enjoy your new machine.

Just to explain what I just wrote to Laundry Bleach:
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac?
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3673
    UPDATE & ADDENDUM:
But even though you can still buy iLife 11 that includes iDVD 7 from Amazon, Apple now make it difficult to install:
Poster jhb21939 posted this in another thread:
“when I attempted to load iDVD into a new iMac. A notice came up on the screen stating that the 'Authorisation Licence' had expired on 25 March this year (2012).
I contacted the Apple support team and eventually, I was told that the Licence had been withdrawn and could no longer be used.”
In other words Apple are now so adamant that we don’t use iDVD that they have tried to make it impossible to install.
In response, Old Toad posted this solution:
“You can still use it one all of your Macs.  If you get an invalid certificate message just set your Mac's clock to sometime before early 2011 and run the installer.  After you're done reset the time back to the correct time.” He added this comment:
“It began after iDVD and iWeb were discontued and they were dropped from the Apple Store. All I can think of is the certificate was set to expire after a certain time period after the intitial iLife disc was released.
I've been able to use the installer even without setting back the date.  I just clicked on the Continue button and it would work as expected.  For some it would not continue unless the date was set back.”
The latest anorexic iMacs just announced do not even include a CD drive! Proof positive that Apple virtually prohibit the use of DVDs - although the newly announced Mac Minis do include a Superdrive.
Yet, they still include iMovie! Heaven alone knows or understands what you are supposed to do with your newly edited masterpiece - except make a low quality version for YouTube?
