New iMac 27" runs loud

I guess loud is an overstatement, but it certainly seems as if the fan or something is running at an audible level that I haven't heard before. The only thing running right now is Firefox and Safari. The machine doesn't appear to be hot in any way. Any suggestions?

If your in a quiet room and at night you definitly would here some of the moviving parts like the fan, or the hardrive spinning. But during the day where the noise of the cars in the streets or even outdoor noise would leak in your room, it should be less obvious,

I have a new IMAC 5k running Yosemite and when I log in I am asked a whole series of questions as to what keychain can access. How can I authorise all of these to be available upon login? Items concerned are such as "Talagent", "Messages agent" etc

Back up all data before proceeding.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Select the login keychain from the list on the left side of the Keychain Access window. If your default keychain has a different name, select that.
If the lock icon in the top left corner of the window shows that the keychain is locked, click to unlock it. You'll be prompted for the keychain password, which is the same as your login password, unless you've changed it.
Right-click or control-click the login entry in the list. From the menu that pops up, select
              Change Settings for Keychain "login"
In the sheet that opens, uncheck both boxes, if not already unchecked.
    From the menu bar, select
Keychain Access ▹ Preferences... ▹ First Aid
There are four checkboxes in the window that opens. Check all of them. if they're not already checked. Close the window.
    Select
Keychain Access ▹ Keychain First Aid
from the menu bar and repair the keychain. Quit Keychain Access.
If you use iCloud Keychain, open the iCloud preference pane and uncheck the Keychain box. You'll be prompted to delete the local iCloud keychain. Confirm. Then re-check the box. Follow one of the procedures described in this support article to set up iCloud Keychain on an additional device.

  • How do I move Elements 11 photos and catalogue from iMac to new iMac both running Yosemite?

I've been researching best way to move my photos and catalogue from my current iMac to my new iMac.  I'm using Elements 11.  Both iMacs running Yosemite.  I know I need to deactivate the current computer's version of Elements if putting it on the new one runs me over the license limit - I don't think it will.  I have read enough to be pretty sure I have to NOT migrate the Elements 11 program to the new iMac because it won't work properly - I'll have to reinstall it from my installation disc on the new iMac.  So far, so good.
Now, I want the easiest way to get the photos on the new iMac, in the same folders, and preserve the catalogue and my current ratings on the photos.  I am unclear on how the catalogue works with its backup and restore function.  Should I move all my photos in their folders in exactly the same locations on my new iMac before installing Elements and trying to restore the catalogue?  I read about the ways to restore the catalogue and I am unsure about whether it just looks for the pictures in the places it expects to find them (which will be the same if I copy everything on to the new iMac first), or whether it restores the pictures where it thinks they should be (in which case I should NOT put the pictures on the new iMac before restoring the catalogue or I'll end up duplicating everything).   Also I have read - and been confused by - the options about restoring catalogue in new location, old location, etc.  I don't want my folders changed.  I have my pictures stored where I want them and I want to keep them there - and I'd prefer not to add some extra layer under the basic My Pictures on my iMac.
I have stored the most recent version of the catalogue, with all photos reconnected, on an external drive.  All the pictures in the catalogue have their meta-data associated with them.  I hope that this will allow me to preserve ratings.  Going through thousands of pictures to find the really good ones again is a time-consuming mess.  When I went from Windows to Mac 3 years ago - I lost the catalogue and all ratings.  When I upgraded from Elements 9 to Elements 11, I lost the catalogue and all ratings.  I do NOT want to ever go through that again.

I appreciate your answer and agree that it is correct, but you told me nothing I did not know.  There is an Elements technical paper which says this in much greater detail, but still does not answer the questions I was trying to ask.
The catalogue file seems much too small to include my thousands of photos.  Are you telling me that it has magically reduced the size of all those photos - from 64 GB to 33 GB, and added the catalogue information - so that the photos will just appear out of nothing but that smaller catalogue file when I restore catalogue?  If so, will you explain the options of same location, new location, new location with existing file structure, etc?
I understand installing the program.  I understand that I should backup the catalogue (I've done it).  I understand I will use restore to restore the catalogue.  I found all this on other sites.  I need someone, somewhere, to explain to me if I need to copy the photos themselves to their new location before I restore catalogue - or not.  And which option in restore to use.  I thought I explained this in my original question.  Any help on these questions about matters I do not understand will be appreciated.

  • How to transfer Painter 12 with my custom brushes from old iMac to a new iMac both running Mavericks

    Hi,
I just purchased a new iMac. Have Painter 12 on my older iMac and want to be able to transfer Painter 12, with my custom brushes to my new iMac. Tried Airdrop but got a message that it was damaged and that I should trash it. Does any know how to get  Painter 12 with all my custom brushes to my new machine? Both are running Mavericks.
    Thank you,
    Jim

    etresoft,
Thank you for your response. I did try to use Migration Assistant and I got as far as the two machines trying to communicate with each other. So I guess the answer to your question would be I tried, I failed and it worked until a certain point. I understand that there are other ways to connect the machines, I would have to see if I have the proper cables to do so. Airdrop did get data to my new machine and that tells me that they do see each other on the network. I do not know why they did not see each other via Migration Assistant. I assume that I could go to Corel's site and download Painter 12 to my new machine, ( my new machine does not have a disk drive ), but I will not have my custom brushes etc. and would have to totally make them up in the fresh install version and I am trying to avoid that.
You are probably correct in saying that Painter 12 probably needs a full reinstallation to work properly. Am I to assume that Migration Assistant will do a full reinstallation, including my custom brushes? I guess I am a little confused here.

  • Can I install OS9 on a Brand new iMac to run Photoshop 6.0.1?

    Hi there;
Today I purchased a brand new iMac. I have been installing my old applications and found that I cannot install Photoshop 6.0.1. The following is the message shown:
"You cannot open the application "Install Adobe Photoshop 6.0.1" because it is not supported on this system"
My old iMac is a G3 and runs on a Panther. Can I install Mac OS 9 on this new Mac so that I can install Photoshop 6.0.1? If yes, how can I do it?
    Regards.

    Hi KP4ABC;
Since the official position of Adobe is that they are no longer supporting PS 7 at all, I would think your chances with PS 6 are right up there with the snowball in that hot place. In order to get anything that works with any reliability you will have to upgrade, probably to PS CS3.
I have to say that PS CS3 is a significant upgrade over PS 7 which is as far back as I go with Photoshop.

  • Can I get my new iMac to run ancient applications?

I just bought a new iMac (OS 10.5.2), which doesn't support older "Classic 9" apps that ran fine on my eMac (OS 10.3.9).
Is there any sort of download that might make these older applications functional?
    Thanks,
    Carl

There are some options. First is SheepShaver, and the second is Mini vMac Full Edition. Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • IMac fan running loudly, started suddenly yesterday

I've read through the forum and tried resetting the SMC and PRAM. Didn't do anything. Anything else I can try before I make an appointment at the Mac store? I really HATE not having my Mac at home...
History: Had iMac for ten months, never an issue. Yesterday midday my computer fan started running high. I installed the iStatPro widget, got this info, then realized I haven't a clue what this info means:
    CPU: 1197
    Hard Drive: 5907
    Optical: 998
Obviously the Hard Drive fan is running five times the rate of the others, but is that abnormal? How abnormal is it?
    The temps run:
    HD: 92
    CPU A: 95
    CPU Heatsink: 97
    Airport Card: 131
    Ambient: 72
    GPU: 108
    GPU Diode: 112
    GPU Heatsink: 112
Thanks for any info you can give me

Before taking off to the Apple Store try doing a SMC and PRAM reset again following:
    1. Turn off your iMac and unplug everything from it for 30 seconds.
    2. Plug in the power cord, keyboard and mouse only.
    3. Press the power button and immediately hold down the Option, Command, P & R keys until you hear the second gong then release the keys. Your machine will start up normally, then check for the issues you are having.
BTW, if your don't have it already I would suggest getting AppleCare, it extends your telephone and parts and labor warranty to 3 years from the original date of purchase. If you do already have it when you call Apple ask about on-site service, they will provide it (if you ask) assuming you are within 50 miles of a service center.

  • Safari on my new iMac 27" running 10.6.3 suddenly EXTREMELY slow.

Hi is anyone having a similar problem, suddenly my Safari browser has completely ground to a half. I tried installing Chrome on my Mac to see if it is a Safari problem and Chrome is just as slow.
I am running a Windows 7 and a Linux machine on my home network as well and they run perfectly via the same Wireless router and ISP.

Hi and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
    Several things to try...
One, login to another user account, launch Safari. If it lags there then it's a system wide issue, not just isolated to your Home Folder.
Next, from the Safari Menu Bar click Safari/Reset. Select the top 7 buttons, click Reset. Relaunch Safari. See if that speeds things up.
If that doesn't make a difference, go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
If the issue it's third party plugins, go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop.
Relaunch Safari and see if that makes a difference. If not, move the .plist file back to the Preferences folder. If Safari functions as it should, move that .plist file to the Trash.
If you have anti-virus software installed (for Mac), that could be a factor.
If you didn't repair disk permissions after the update, do that as soon as you can.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Adobe Creative Cloud crashes immediately on launch, won't run on a new iMac 5K / Yosemite.

Adobe Creative Cloud installer (/Applications/Utilities/Adobe Creative Cloud/ACC/Creative Cloud.app) crashes immediately on launch, so I can't install CC on a new iMac 5K running Yosemite. Launching the app to fetch the rest of the CC programs crashes, saying "Creative Cloud quit unexpectedly."
I have an old CS3 Photoshop install, a newish Lightroom install, and now I need to install Premiere from my work Adobe ID. I think this may be the crux of the problem. If the CC Cleaner app worked as advertised, I could wipe the old Photoshop install and just use the new CC Photoshop and everything would be cool, but the CC Cleaner doesn't work. It looks like it works, but the problem persists. In fact, Adobe support told me via twitter that Adobe's installer basically doesn't work on migrated Macs (new Macs where old data has been set up from backups). They called it an OS conflict, but I pointed out that everything else works, so it's pretty much Adobe's conflict.
It seems like a permissions issue, and Adobe thinks it's a permissions issue blocking the ACC applet, yet I've repaired HD permissions and did Disk Repair, run Adobe's CC Cleaner multiple times, attempted to install CC in another admin account on the machine, attempted to install CC from Root, and repeated all this after reinstalling OS X via rebooting with Cmd+R, always end with the same result: Creative Cloud quit unexpectedly.
They also suggested I install on a clean disk, one that hasn't been migrated. To do that, I supposed I have to bring it back to Apple, since I have neither a Yosemite install disc, nor a drive to put one in.
I found an article called "CC applications close immediately after launch" but this tip doesn't work because Creative Cloud applet is the app I can't launch.
    https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/cc-applications-crash-immediately-launch.html
They sound like they're trying to help, but the responses sound like utter BS, and, like the support website, i'm going around in circles. I'm sure I'm not the only person who's had this problem, right? RIGHT?? I'm sure the answer is buried here someplace...
    Thanks in advance!

There doesn't seem to be an uninstaller for CS3, and I've tried the CC Cleaner tool several times. It doesn't work and it is not correctly documented anywhere. For example, there is no log file at "/Users/[user name]/Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool.log" as one of the Adobe pages states. For example, there is no log file at "/Users/[user name]/Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool.log" so I can't find any success or error states of the tool.
There is a log file at "/Users/[me]/Library/Logs/ACC.log." Would there be anything in there that could shine light on install issues vs. uninstall issues?
Regardless, running Cleaner and then attempting to install ACC repeatedly leads to the error "Creative Cloud quit unexpectedly" upon launching it or rebooting (which launches it automatically). I've been trying various things for weeks to no avail yet.

No intention to dispute your advice here Pancenter, but just out of interest, what kind of problems are you referring to?
    Thanks in advance!
Since it was a new iMac he was going to purchase, there is the huge iMac/Fusion Drive Thread.
The other thing is... the Fusion drives offer no improvement over standard drives for audio, in fact performance may be less, plus there is an additional software layer installed to mange the Fusion Drive... and to top it off, the the regular spinning disk of the Fusion Drive is only 5400RPM.
    Here's the thread.

  • PROS and CONS of running FCP on NEW iMACS?

    Hi gang...
It's a sad day -- I've been running fcp 5.1.4 using Tiger on my PowerMac G5 (dual core 2.3GHz, 2.5GB of memory) for years now -- few real problems besides operator error.
    All has been good.
Along comes a client shooting XDCAM footage and suddenly I'm feeling VERY behind the times. I'm unable to edit with this codec since it's not compatible with fcp 5.0. And since my G5 is pre-Intel processor, I'm unable to upgrade to fcp 6 or higher (is this accurate?)
So what are the pros and cons of purchasing one of the new iMacs to run fcp 7? Although my G5 was installed with a DeckLink card, I never did any external monitoring using an NTSC monitor. Most of the stuff I'm doing is long form programming, straight cuts/dissolves, minimal graphics. I'm creating alot of content for the web, delivering some (non-broadcast) masters on dvd.
Do the iMacs have external monitoring capabilities? (I'm under the impression they don't)
Am I really at the point where I need to purchase new hardware? (I've been so happy with my G5.)
What will be my minimum investment, and is the Macmini ($599) a viable option?
And finally, does Joni love Chachi?
    Thanks

FCS3 (FCP7) is only supported on intel processors. FCS2 (FCP6) runs fine on G5s.
iMacs do not have external monitoring capabilities beyond using firewire out for DV. I don't know how the mini-dvi port works with something like the original Matrox MXO. It may work fine.
Still, there is no way to hook up esata drives, replace the video card with something that supports Motion or Color or add any one of dozens of nifty bells and whistles.
The mac mini is a poor choice. Lousy graphics support and NO expansion capabilities.
    Get a MacPro.

  • Is there a Thunderbolt to Component Video cable / adapter for the new iMac?

    Hello!
My church is looking to purchase a new iMac to run our presentation software.
We currently have a PC that has a graphics card which has a component-out cable.  We connect that to a component video distribution amplifer to distribute to several HDTVs and a projector.
Is there a way to connect the iMac to a component video (Y, Pb, Pr or Red blue Green) input?
I understand that DVI is digital and Component is analog, but has anyone found a device, cable, and/or adapter that will do the job?
    Thanks,
    Randy

    There's at least this one:
    http://www.amazon.com/DisplayPort-Composite-Video-S-Video-Converter/dp/B004VV8R8 6
and the review says that it works with current Macs, but I can't verify.

  • How can i view and upload photos from an older version of iPhoto which are on an external hard drive to my new iMac?  i currently have copied the application version 9.4.2. on my lacie backup and want to view and upload this to my new iPhoto version 9.5.1

our old iMac died suddenly, but i had backed up the iPhoto application to a lacie external hard drive.   however, when i try to open it in my new iMac which is installed with version 9.5.1 and is upgraded to maverick, it comes up with “cannot be opened, to open you must upgrade to latest version” and then makes you press the quit button.
the iPhoto version on the external hard drive is iPhoto 9.4.2 which i upgraded on 29/11/12 onto our old iMac (early 2007 version)
my new iMac is running on version OSX 10.9.1
i have looked at buying  iphoto library manager and have emailed them about whether this would work, but any advice would be gratefully received as i cannot be the only person that has had this problem but i cannot find any answers that work.
    thanks
    Julie

YOu can rebuild with Library Manager and this does not require a purchase:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Re-installing Photoshop CS6 on new iMac problem.

I transferred my Photoshop CS6 to a new iMac Retina running OSX 10.10.1, having taken care to deactivate on the old Mac first and then reactivated on the new.  Photoshop comes up with an error message now each time I launch saying that "One or more files in the Adobe Application Support folder, necassary for running Photoshop, are missing.  Please run the Photoshop installer and re-install Photoshop."  So I did just that with my original installer disc.  At the end of that process it said that there had been some errors and referred me to a log file which said:
Despite all this Photoshop seems to be working, but every time I launch it I get the same error message.   I've not used it enough since the move to the new Mac to discover if any other faults have developed.  As well as using my original install disc I also tried downloading the CS6 installer from the adobe.com site but exactly the same thing happens.  I would welcome suggestions for a fix...

Alas, this did not work. I first of all tried the reinstall in Safe Boot mode and at the end of the process exactly the same install error message as shown above.  I then moved to the part of those instructions that said to ditch Adobe AIR and reinstall it.  AIR was not visible anywhere on my machine, nor did that folder /Volumes/Adobe Master Collection exist.  Maybe there's a difference between what CS6 installs compared with the CS5 your instructions refer to (?).  So I went back to the Adobe.com downloads page, got Adobe AIR and installed it - during that it told me it was upgrading my AIR (wherever that was hidden - Find file could not see it) to version 16.  Otherwise no reported errors.  I went a step further and used the Uninstall tool to remove the existing CS6 installation, then tried reinstalling Photoshop - again same issue, same error.  So I'm no further forward after several hours of trying different things.
    Any more ideas please?
