New iMac and iMovie don't recognize Panasonic camcorder
I've had a Panasonic PV GS400 for a few years. I've flawlessly imported video into my old G4 tower. I recently purchased a new iMac. Because the Firewire cable that I had was for FW400, I had to buy a 4 pin to 9 pin Firewire 800 cable to connect the camcorder to the computer. But it is not recognizing the camcorder. I tested the firewire port on the Mac with other peripherals and it is working properly. And I'm still able to connect the camcorder to the G4 tower no problem, so the camcorder is working properly. I then figured it was a bad cable, so I bought a new one. Same deal. I even tried connecting the camcorder with the new cable to my MacBook Pro FW800 port. No go. But when I tried it on the MBP Firewire 400 port it worked fine.
So my question is this, is anyone aware of an issue like this where a relatively new (2006) camcorder can't be recognized by FW800?
I was finally able to import video onto the iMac by 1) connecting an external FW400 hard drive to the Mac's FW800 port with a 6 to 9 pin connector then 2) connecting the camcorder to the FW400 port on the external drive. It works, but is hardly elegant.

That's the way I connected too.
I like to have the HD on the speediest connector to get a smooth playback.

Cable
• Sure that You use the FireWire - USB will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin FW one ?
• Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
Camera
• Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
• Toogle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
• Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)
Connections
• Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
Mac
• Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
(Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minmum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.
SoftWare
• Delete iMovie pref file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
• Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
• FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
Using WHAT versions ? .
• Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
• QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
• iMovie 8 (7.1.?) ?
• iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
Other ways to import Your miniDV tape.
• Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
• If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE Mac OS Exchange formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

I have a DVD that iDVD and iMovie don't recognize. It was a VHS tape that I had turned into a DVD by an outfit called The Video Lab.
I have OS X 10.3.9, iDVD 5, iMovie HD
When I put this DVD into the superdrive it opens the DVD Player and will play on my Mac. It is apparently divided into 28 5 minute chapters or at least if I hit the skip icon it says Chapter 2, 5 minutes time showing.
Anyway the DVD has a folder labeled VIDEO_TS . Inside the folder are 8 files labeled:
VIDEO_TS.BUP, VTS010.BUP, VTS012.VOB, VIDEO_TS.IFO, VTS010.IFO, VIDEO_TS.VOB, VTS013.VOB, VTS011.VOB
Is there any way I can open this DVD in iDVD or iMovie so that I can use parts of it??You need to convert the VOB files back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:

I just purchased a brand new Imac and ITunes doesn't recognize CD names

I come to this forum humbly and with gratitude. These Apple Support Communities have saved my sanity countless times as I was learning Garage Band several years ago.
I recently purchased a new Imac (May '11) to use primarily for Logic recording. I decided to import a few CDs from my collection (all major label artists/store bought CDs). The first CD I placed into the CD drive was not recognized by Gracenote. I thought this was perhaps I was trying to import a CD I purchased outside of the US. However, when I looked up the artist I found their entire collection at the iTunes store.
Now, I'm almost 100% sure this is user error and I'm hoping you can help me. Every CD I place into the CD drive of my iMac is not recognized. I have read many 3-4 year old posts about this same issue, but I have not seen any recent ones. I have read that security settings need to be adjusted and I have experimented with the firewall turned on and off to no avail.
Any insight/advice would be greatly appreciated. If this topic has recently been covered, please excuse my ignorance, I was simply not able to find any current solutions.

First off, I want to thank you for taking time to respond and help me, I really appreciate it!
I have verified everything in the iTunes Prefs > General, and there is a check next to automatically retrieve CD track names, and yes, my internet connection is active.
Instead of going off of the wireless router, I simply connected my ethernet cable directly to the back of my iMac because I suspected there were some connectivity issues. This move seems to have improved things greatly.
Update: I restarted my iMac and iTunes now seems to be automatically connecting to Gracenote to find the track names. However, various CDs from non US-based artists are still not showing up. What puzzles me is that I am always able to find their entire song catalog and artwork on iTunes if I search for it. Do you have any idea why this might be?
Also, is there a wireless router that you would recommend for iMacs?

i have a new imac with imovie 11 however my everio hd camcorder will only work with imovie 8 or 9. i tried to download imovie 9 but my mac says i don't need the update. How can i download imovie 8 or 9 complete not the update?
I really appreciate all your help. Today I spent some time on the problem. First I purchased any video converter from the ap store and then I connected the camera to the mac with the original usb cable that came with the camera. I turned on the camera and selected backup on pc and the logo came up on my home page. I opened it and after several attempts i found the 3 video files that were on the camera. I then converted them from a tod file to mp4 and then transfered them to imovie. Now I have to figure out how to send the video to youtube or move it to an external hard drive which I have not been able to do. So far I am not too fond of imovie 11. If you could send me the download for imovie 6 I then could try that route. When talking to apple support yesterday about the problem they suggested to get Final Cut Express. I just bought a new iMac and now I amtrying to use it as a screen for my Macbook pro, but it don’t have a MiniDisplayPort the new model only have Thunderbolt which my Macbook don’t have. Isthere any way to connect this two mac’s anyway??
Screen sharing setup in 10.5, 10.6 are described by the links by operating system. 10.7 is fairly similar to 10.6.
And if both Macs have Firewire, you can setup a Firewire over IP network for fast communication between machines. Note if you have two different Firewire ports a 6 pin to 9 pin Firewire cable does exist. There are no Firewire to USB cables. -
I just got a new IMac, and tried to download files from my old PC. When I go to,Finder, I have 1500 files under Developer, an 78 files under Other.
Most of these files I do not recognize. Can they be trashed? Why did they transfer? I used a flash drive for the transfer. Also, is there a way to transfer my older email files to this new computer?

TomDid you use the Migration Assistant to help set up the new iMac using some of the files in the older PC? Some likely won't mean much, unless you have applications that can use or convert them. There's also a way to use the software Time Machine to import data files from an external or another computer, so you may have used that, too.
Hopefully someone with experience in a similar issue will reply...

I have "migrated" my Time Capsule files to my new iMac and most of the files to me "I don't have permission to view files" I am they admin....will I thought I was. What gives?
You should be able to change the permissions on the files.. this is yet another bungle by Mavericks I suspect.

Just got a new iMac and iDVD just wont work, from creating a new project, or opening an old one, or trying to share from iMovie (HD)
If I try to do anything nothing seems to happen and when I close the program a window does appear and from there it just freezes.
Have deleted and reinstalled iDVD, repaired permissions, all up to date in my on software updates...any ideas?

• Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
iDVD pref file resides.
Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
and is named. com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
Now restart iDVD.
• Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
• Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
• Program miss-match. iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
• Program miss-match. iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
• Program miss-match. iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
• iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try

I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.
If You do a re-install be sure to get rid of all iDVD old parts AND then EMPTY the Trash-basket !

Start a New Clean project - or delete project assets
No of Colors - must be set to millions
EdinSF writes that, The 10.6.3 update with an Open GL fix seems to have taken care of the problem.

Ive got a new iMac and now that i updated iTunes I do not have all my music and movie purchases. How can I get it all back?. I used to have it before update
It doesn't magically transfer itself, you have to do it. Purchase may present themselves for re-downloading but things such as CD are only on the old machine or on the CD.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to select a library, then guide it to the 'iTunes Library.itl' file in the moved iTunes folder. If you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there. (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)

I am thinking about purchasing a new IMac and presently use a PC. I would like to find out how difficult it is to transfer files from the PC to the IMac or in more detail - just how is it done. Many thanks for any responses.
There are several ways by which it can be done. There is a special Migration Assistant for transferring an entire user account from a PC to the Mac. You would have to establish a network connection between the two machines.
Transfer the files you want to an external USB hard drive from the PC then transfer from the external drive to the Mac.
Ask the Apple retailer if they will transfer your data to the new Mac at the time of purchase. You will need to bring the PC with you. -
My wife and I each have an itunes account. We just got a new imac, and want to put all of our media on it. Can we share songs and media from two diffrent accounts on the imac, our iphones, and the ipad2?
Decide which device will be changing accounts. On that device, if you have any photos in photo stream that are not in your camera roll that you want to keep on the device, save them to the camera roll by opening the photo stream album in the thumbnail view, tapping Edit, then tap all the photos you want to save, tap Share and tap Save to Camera Roll.
Once this is done, go to Settings>iCloud, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account. (This will only delete the account from this phone, not from iCloud. The device(s) that will be keeping the account will not be effected by this.) When prompted about what to do with the iCloud data, be sure to select Keep On My iDevice. Next, set up a new iCloud account using a different Apple ID (if you don't have one, tap Get a Free Apple ID at the bottom). Then turn iCloud data syncing back to On, and when prompted about merging with iCloud, choose Merge. This will upload the data to the new account.
Finally, to delete any data that you don't want in each account (such as deleting your wife's data from your account, and vice versa) you will have to go to icloud.com on your computer and sign into each iCloud account separately and manually delete it. -

You don't need a phone port on the iMac. The HP 7300 DeskJet Pro has an internal modem, you connect the printer's modem connection directly to your phone line. Please re-read the install directions that came with the printer.

I just bought a new IMAC and I want to install the Office Mac 2011, but it doesn´t have a CD unit. How can I do it?
Howard has the easiest answer. Or at least, cheapest, since you don't need to purchase an external CD/DVD drive.
The "demo" software from Microsoft's site is exactly the same as what's on the DVD. Install that and activate it with the key in your software box.
