New iMac can't find the old iMac via Ethernet

I just bought a new 27" iMac and I am trying to migrate data from my old iMac.
I have the two machines hooked together via Ethernet and have Etherenet turned on in the source iMac but the new iMac can't find the old iMac. The pinwheel keeps spinning with no success. What should I do here?

What FireWire?
There is no FireWire port on the new machine so this is a non-starter.
Unfortunately you didn't read my post very thoroughly. You are correct, the new iMacs do not include FW however your old Mac probably does. For just that reason and more Apple makes a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter which you can use if you opt to use FW Target Disk Mode. You can find the adapter by going to your Apple online store or Amazon carries it to. Here is the Amazon link:
http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Thunderbolt-to-FireWire-Adapter/dp/B008RXYOKY/ref=sr _1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1366831510&sr=8-1&keywords=thunderbolt+to+firewire+cable
However as I mentioned use TM or a bootable clone with Migration Assistant. If your old Mac was using any verison of OS X from Leopard (10.5.x) on at the very least you should have a  Time Machine backup!
Also use Pondiini's guide as AnaMusic suggests, it's THE GUIDE for using Migration Assistant and Setup Assistant. He has also created excellent guides for Time Machine too.

  • Where can I find the old OS for my iPhone 3G?

Where can you find the old 3.1.1 software? (I assume that was its number)
The 4.0 is a disaster on mine. I still cannot get it to download any music. It keeps saying it cannot find the address. Yet iTunes plays the songs just fine.
At first my apps would crash everytime I loaded one. After the third time downloading the OS, they finally work. But this is the worst new OS update that Apple has ever given me.
I hope someone knows where I can find the old software because Apple doesn't publicize it.
    Thanks very much.

Search your computer for a file with iphone and 3.1.3 (or 3.1.1 or whatever you were running) in the filename and an extension of .ipsw. It might also be in the recycle bin. You can't do anything legitimate with the file, really, but it would be good to hang on to. Usually iTunes saves a restore to previous firmware file, but unfortunately all the ways for downgrading back to it have been closed over time by Apple because people have been exploiting them to "modify" their phones. But if you can find the file, move it to your desktop or someplace and sit on it until you find a way to restore that you're happy with.

  • After successfully importing my bookmarks through Firefox Sync from my old to new computer, can I purge the old computer and still have the bookmarks on the new

I want to upgrade my computer and did a Windows Easy Transfer to my new one. My Firefox bookmarks did not show up on my new computer so I used Firefox Sync-which worked fine. Now that I have the bookmarks on the new computer, can I erase the old computer and still have the bookmarks on the new one.

First, disconnect your old computer from Firefox Sync so you don't accidentally delete the data from sync, but then yes you should be good to go.

I can't see any reason that you would need it... Just let it create it's own connection.

  • IMac can't find the Superdrive.

Basic problem: my 20 inch, 18 month old iMac, running 10.4.11, can’t find the internal DVD/CD Superdrive. It can’t be found with the system profiler, itunes, iMovie, Toast, etc.
If I put in a CD or DVD it goes in the slot but it does not show up on the desktop and it can’t be ejected by the keyboard.
The computer also will not boot up in the open firmware mode.
I called Applecare and we went through the usual suspects and fixes. That didn’t work so they said to take it into an apple retailer/service to get the Superdrive replaced.
The problem is: this is my second Superdrive- only two months old. The first Superdrive (original) wouldn’t burn (and I seldom burn discs) so I had to replace that in April.
I took my computer into Apple retailer MacEnthusiasts in West LA. They checked all the hardware and said the Superdrive needed replacing (they did that) and that the logic board needed replacing (they did that).
The problem is: the iMac still won’t recognize the Superdrive.
I don’t get the feeling that anything else is wrong with the computer. It will recognize an external firewire burner but not the internal burner.
MacEnthusiasts gave up and told me to call Applecare again.
Do you think I’d have better luck at a regular Apple Store?
I can burn a disc but I paid for an internal drive so I’d like a working internal drive.
What advice can you give me?
    Thanks

    Hi Steve,
Depends on the Apple Store, but I think that is your next step, see what happens there before going beyond that, they may very well correct whatever it is.

  • Where can I find the old 20'' Cinema Display?

Hello, I was wondering where I can find the old 20-inch cinema display (I believe it's called) The ones more popularly seen with Power Mac g4's. They have a somewhat clear base like the iMac's. I remember seeing them in stores close to a year ago, when some places still carried g4 power mac's. If I remember right these are a bit cheaper then the new cinema HD displays. Please respond. Thank you for your time.

    Hi Tom,
With ADC, video, power and USB feed are all routed through one cable connection. This is a special connection system unique to Apple computer, which is being phased out (as the modern Apple moniotrs have gone back to DVI so that they can also be used on PC's).
    These specs:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermacg5/stats/powermac_g5_quad2.5.html
suggest that the stock video card the G5 Powermac Quad 2.5 ships with will only supply DVI output. If that is the case, then you will have to use a DVI to ADC adaptor such as as this one:
    http://www.drbott.com/prod/db.lasso?code=0111-DVAD
To use this type of adaptor, you need a DVI port and a free USB port on the computer.
    Cheers!
    Karl

  • Qosmio X300-14Y- How can I find the old BIOS version 1.90?

    Hi,
First of all; I am so sorry for my bad english knowledge..
    Im from Turkey.
I use x300 14 y since one week. factory bios version for vista 32 bit 1.90. But I upgraded to 2.10.
How can I find old bios 1.90 setup file again. ? Please help.......

You are right. On Toshiba download page you will not be able to find older BIOS version.
When the new BIOS update is realised the old one will not be available for download.
If you need older version contact nearest authorized service provider.
They must have it. Be cool and talk with them. Maybe they can send it to you per mail.

  • Where can I find the old 2D and 3D Industrial Controls that were sold as an option in early LabVIEW. The ones with pipes and pumps, etc.

A long time ago, I purchased as add-on to LV that had some rendered 2D and 3D pipes and pumps setup as custom boolean controls.  I can not find my old ones.  Are they still available somewhere?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Just to add to Paul's answer, the LabVIEW Datalogging and Supervisory Control (LV DSC) still distributing the libraries. After installing, you can go to 'Tools' menu and under the DSC Module, you can find the "Image Navigator" which launch the UI to choose the pictures.

  • Windows XP Home can't find HP printer connected via Ethernet

I posted this on the Bonjour forum, but this might be a better place for it. So:
We just got an HP Photosmart D7260, which I've connected to our network via Ethernet.
My MacBook and Kittendaddy's eMac found it with no problem, but when I boot into XP Home, the Printer Wizard can't find it, and Bonjour sees it but can't find the correct driver (even though I've installed it). When I click on "Have disk", it takes me to the disk contents but I can't seem to find the file it wants.
    Any ideas?
God, why is everything so complicated when it comes to Windows? It drives me crazy, I tell you.
Oh yeah, it's this printer, if that's important: http://tinyurl.com/265367

  • Having created a new library, I can't find the old one in iTunes

I've got a new iPhone 3GS and an old iPod.
I wanted to create a new library for my podcasts only, and move them to the iPhone - while keeping all my music on the iPod.
I used shift-Start iTunes and then started a new library. I Added the Podcasts Folder to the new library. However, only about half of them seemed to copy over. ... and now I can't get back to the original library. Anyone know how I get back to square one so that I can update my old iPod?
    Thanks for any help.
    Andrew

Ah, many thanks, I think I understand now! I thought the 'library' would be where the files were actually stored, like in a book library, but seems that it's really more like an index.
I deleted the whole darn 'iPhone' folder/library, and it asked me to choose another one, and I found the old iTunes one.
I'm marking this thread as 'answered', thanks again, but it was really just a stepping stone to a greater problem, so I'll now open up another thread on that

  • I purchase beatles ringtones and i have an new iPhone can't find the ringtones now to put on the new phone

i purchase some beatles ringtones earier this year and just purchase a new iphone 5 trying to get these ringtones on the new phone but can't find them. they are in my history of purchase.

Ringtones (and audiobooks) are currently a one-time only download from the store. If you don't have them on your computer and/or on a backup then you can try contacting iTunes support and see if they will grant you a re-download : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page

  • HT201250 i am looking for a old email.  I already finished migration and it shows successful.  But, i can't find the old email record .  Where is the file?

I want to restore the email from time capsule.  After migration and it shows successful, but, I still cannot find the email data.  Pls adv

The missing file thing happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
At guess you've used a different profile name. Files inside the media folder have survied the transfer, but those outside are expected to be on the same absolute file paths, but no longer are.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes.

  • I'm trying to migrate data from an old Powerbook G4 to a Macbook running 10.8 - new laptop can't find the target disk

Can anyone help me get a new(er) Macbook that's running Mountain Lion migrate data from an old PowerBook G4 running 10.4.x?
I've restarted the G4 holding down "T" and have the Firewire icon floating around its screen, started Migration Assistant on the Macbook, telling it to get data from a Time Machine back up or other disk, have Firewire cable connected to both laptops, continue and the Macbook is just endlessly "Looking for Other Computers"....
    Any ideas?
    Anyone?

Additionally, When I have the two laptops connected via Firewire, I do see the disk from which I'm trying to migrate data and can copy files, etc.
Not sure if this is helpful or not but thought I'd throw it out there.

  • Imac can't find the time capsule

on the time capsule is a green light and its at 4 mtr from my mac without cables around.
    It worked for a year.

It was really empty. Clicked on, nothing.
But no prohibited signs, like these:
Get info on folder, zero kb. Just one user account on each mac.
I did navigate back several days prior to my Mac dying. Still nothing.
Sounds like it may have been excluded, or perhaps damaged.
Just for future reference, it's always a good idea to keep "secondary" backups.  See #27 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for some suggestions.
