New iMac DOA

Hey apple. Just want to says thanks. I've spent endless dollars on your products over the years. I order a iMac i7 and wait like everybody else for "ships:november". I was scared I might have screen flickering like others but thanks to you, upon unboxing, I actually see nothing because this $2k paperweight doesn't even turn on.
Thanks for the great product. It's the last one I'll ever buy from you. Customer lost.

First, you're not addressing Apple here. We're all pretty much your fellow users here.
Second, sorry this happened to you, but any electronic device can fail, and an electronic device is most likely to fail when it's new. It's especially irritating when your brand-new toy doesn't work, but that's the nature of the physics of solid-state electronics. In addition, shipping from China (where almost all electronic devices are built these days) can result in problems when something gets jarred loose, something which can happen even with the most careful packaging (some carriers are really rough with shipments; I've gotten packages from Dell that have had forklift blades driven through the box). If you plan to refuse to buy from every vendor from which receive, or might receive, a defective product, you might as well just plan on not buying anything every again. No matter how much any manufacturer tries, some portion of products will fail. If they didn't, we wouldn't need warranties.
Call Apple. They may be able to help you sort out the problem, and if they can't will arrange a replacement or repair.

  • Brand new iMac won't boot :-(

    Hi All,
I just got a brand new iMac. I did a clean install of Leopard, imported a couple of CDs into iTunes, and then thought I'd give Bootcamp a go.
I created the disk and the machine duly rebooted into Windows setup. As the installer couldn't see the Bootcamp partition (I was using XP without SP2). I told the installer to quit and reboot.
Now all I get is a hanging white screen when I power up my iMac. If i hold down the Alt key I get a mouse pointer which locks up after a couple of seconds and that's it.
    I've tried:
    - Holding down alt on bootup - this brings up a pointer which locks after about 2 seconds
    - Holding down alt+C - with Leopard in the drive - nothing happens
    - Zapping the PVRAM - AltCMD+PR" - this had no effect
    - Resetting the SMU - hold down power whilst plugging in - now all the fans are running at maximum speed
    - An open firmware update as per this post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5984118
    Is the machine completely toast?

The same thing happened to me this last week. After talking to Apple on the phone for hours they decided that it was dead and declared it doa (even though it was working for a few hours before boot camp). I am getting my new one this week. I can promise you that boot camp will not be put used on this one.

  • Transfer files from 8600/200 to new Imac 20/SD

    Hi,
I know how to turn the computer on- aside from that I am a complete novice- so I request your patience.
My question is how to transfer my documents from my old computer (PowerMac 8600/200-Operating system 8.1) to the new Imac 20/SD 2.4 GHz IntelCore 2 that is due to arrive any day now. I also have documents on Zip discs that I need to transfer.
I just switched to cable from a dial up connection- so now the 8600 does not have an Internet connection. I have borrowed, and am currently using my mom’s eMac Power PC G4 that has a USB Hub in the extended keyboard.
The 8600 has slots for disc, Zip and CD. The new computer I believe only has a CD slot.
Can I connect a Zip drive to the new Imac 20/SD to copy Zip data onto the new computer? Would I need a different type of Zip drive to connect to the old 8600/200? This is probably a dumb question but would my mom’s eMac keyboard with a USB slot work on the 8600 so I could transfer files in some way using the USB slot?
Also, - as secondary question how can I best use my faithful 8600- and not have to totally retire it.
I would appreciate any help/info you can share on this topic.
    Thanks
    Ellen-

    Ellen,
You can find used zip drives for cheap at surplus stores and recyclers. Zip disks are great for transferring data and moving a file to a computer with a color printer, etc. Do not use them for storing data.
You will need one that is SCSI and one that is USB. They can be found for $5 apiece. Be sure and get a non dead on arrival (DOA) guarantee because the prior owner may have experienced the click of death and loss of data on an older drive.
Google 'click of death' and 'zip drive' and you will have plenty of horror stories to read. Out of 50 zip drives, I keep the good ones marked and separate from the older disasters - usually a dark blue case. The drives have plenty of great uses and $5 is much better than the $250 I was happy to pay when our first one was new. Do not let the click issue discourage you from trying them, just be forewarned.
Here is a 1998 news article:
    http://www.news.com/Clickof+death+strikesIomega/2100-1001_3-207628.html
Drives from that era are still around even though the problem has long since been cured. Iomega learned about quality control the hard way.
    More reading for solutions:
    http://www.grc.com/tip/codfaq1.htm
    Even Wikipedia has it documented:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clickofdeath
With that said, if you can find a store with $5 zip drives and a good return policy, go for it.

  • New imac 21.5 or 2008 Mac Pro?

    Hey folks,
I am trying to decide between purchasing a new imac, either 21.5 or 27 with maxed out processer and 2 TB hd. I'll upgrade the ram to 16gb or 32gb once I recieve it or a used Mac Pro from a local seller that has the below specs. Any thoughts or advice?
This is a gently used, mechanically sound and tech tested Apple Mac Pro. I am only selling due to our business upgrading, otherwise I love this machine, and would not be selling it. It comes fully loaded (both hardware and software), and is ready for the most robust tasks.
Included with the Mac Pro is 2 brand-new sealed 20.5" Lenovo LCD monitors, Apple Magic Mouse and Apple Wireless Keyboard. Currently, the Mac Pro is setup for dual monitors on the 512mb NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT video card.
The memory on the Mac Pro has been upgraded to 16GB and an Apple OEM 256 GB Toshiba Solid State Drive (SSD) has been added to increase boot up speeds to mere seconds.  The SSD can be configured to run either OS X Lion or Snow Leopard and will also house all of the applications.  The combination of 16GB RAM and the applications residing on the SSD enables this machine to perform at amazing speeds.  It can seamlessly render video and run other ram intensive applications with ease, making this a perfect addition to anyone's video editing studio.
In addition to the 256 SSD, the Mac Pro has a total of 4 TB of storage space with two separate 2 TB hard drives for storing massive amounts of data. (2 open bays if you wish to add more storage).
    LOADED SOFTWARE:
MS Office 2011 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Communicator
Adobe CS5 Mastersuite (Photoshop, Encore, Flash, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, FireWorks, Catalyst, Contribute, After Effects, Bridge, and much more!)
    Final Cut Pro 7
    iLife 2011
    Aperture 3
    Adobe Acrobat X (PDF Editor)
All applications have been freshly reinstalled with their appropriate activation keys. The machine comes ready to go with no administrative password for either operating system (Lion or Snow Leopard).
Thanks for looking and if you have any questions feel free to ask! This Mac Pro comes with a 30 day warranty against DOA.  Buy with confidence.
If you like the machine, I have a little room to work on the price if you do not want the SSD. Otherwise price is FIRM. This machine is a powerhouse!

This looks like it has everything you need, but beware, the seller installed a lot of software onto this Mac.
He makes no mention of including the software discs. So, if something bad really happens with this Mac, at some future time, if you did not backup the Mac and software, you will lose all this software as you'll have no way of reinstalling it.
He is basically selling this Mac with a value added of having all this high end software installed.
Most end user agreements do not allow this so he is, basically, giving you pirated software.
It's a great gesture, but if you do not take extra precaution to back up all your data and software to either disc or another external drive/s, you run the risk of losing all of this software forever.
If you buy this, plan on buying one or two external drives to use a backup drive for everything on the Mac's internal drive/s.

  • No way to startup my new iMac, any ideas?

I've, finally, received my new iMac (Cored Duo - 1.83 - 512 MB) on Friday evening and right after pulling it off from the package and pressing the power button, the screen stays dark, power light turns on solid, and a bit of quite normal noise can be heard coming from the iMac.
I've tried everything to resolve this big problem:
    - reset SMU
    - attempted apple hardware test boot
    - attempted to reset pram
    - attempted to boot from Mac OS X DVD
    - changed power cable and power socket
I couldn't get it to boot properly from any media. It seems really a DOA unit. So I'm expecting AppleStore will exchange my units asap. This is the second Mac I've bought and received as a DOA (the firse was a Titanium which has been exchanged without problems by AppleStore) in about 20 Macs bought in my life. I still love Apple.
BTW, any idea to resolve this problem without sending it back to Apple? I've waited many days to receive it and now it doesn't work at all.
    Thanks
iMac Core Duo 1.83   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

You could attempt the sledge hammer method, but then you might have a little problem exchanging it

  • New iMac is VERY SLOW on first time bootup

I just bought a new iMac this evening and am trying to get through the initial setup but this thing is TERRIBLY slow.  I'm wondering if I purchased a bad one or something.  When im going through the set up menue (selecting country and connecting to internet), i click continue and it sits there for 30 seconds before it actually registered that I clicked continue.
When i first plugged in the power cord and it started up...it sat at the white boot up screen (with apple logo and loading wheel) for 15 minutes before it finally started the setup process.
Is this normal or did I get a DOA computer?

Not normal, I have had a few iMacs and they have never done that. I imagine even with the standard option 5400rpm drive in the new 21.5" iMacs it should still boot faster. Take it back, its new get another one.

  • Brand new imac G5 17" won't start up

    Hello,
I just received my new imac today and was really disappointed when after I'd hooked everything up and when I hit the power button the screen stayed black and a small white light on the front turned on for just a second.
Any ideas??? I tried the online chat support--no help there... and, of course, there's no phone support right now. I'm really frustrated. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I have a bad feeling it just doesn't work.

I feel your pain. I received a brand new 20" a few weeks ago with the same symptoms. Spent time on the phone with tech support and brought to local Apple Store only to hear them say the unit was DOA. The local Apple Store had not yet received the new 20" models so I had to send the unit back to Apple. I'm a first time Mac owner, and needless to say this was not the first experience I was looking for. I'm glad to say that my second one is running like a charm. You should be able to exchange yours for a new one at a local Apple Store, if you did not make any customizations on your order. Good luck.

  • I am trying to move my wife's iPhoto '08 library to my new iMac for iPhoto '11.

I am trying to move my wife's iPhoto (2007) library on a Macbook to my new iMac for iPhoto '11.  First, when I opened iPhoto on the iMac it asked me to create a library, which I did.  Then I imported her photos via a wireless network to my "new" library.  However, when it finally finished importing, it had imported 3 copies of each photo from her library.  I deleted the "new" library and started over.
Second, I opened iPhoto on the iMac and chose to use "other library."  I chose my wife's shared iPhoto library and it began transferring the photos to the new iMac (or so I thought).  This worked beautifully as it only brought over single photos and not 3 copies like discussed above.  After editing the new library and adding some photos from an old PC, I shut down iPhoto.  A few hours later I tried to open iPhoto on the iMac and it gave me the opening screen again with choices to create a new library or use a different library.  As it turns out, my wife's Macbook and been disconneted from our wireless network.  I was able to figure out that that unless my wife's Macbook is connected to the network then I cannot access the iPhoto library on my iMac.  I was under the impression that I had copied her library to my computer and that the photo files were now on the hard drive of the iMac.  So when her computer is offline I can no longer access the imported library.  I want her library to stay on the iMac as we plan to sell her Macbook.  As you now know, we cannot access her iPhoto library on the Macbook since she is running an older version of iPhoto.
So, what I would like to do is to completely transfer the photos from her Macbook to my new iMac and be able to access them on the iMac regardless of whether she is on the network or not because we plan to sell her Macbook to a friend.  Thank you for any help you can provide.

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
Then hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
and select the Library that you moved.  That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
Your first option didn't work because you imported one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
Your second option didn't work because you simply referenced her library on the old machine.

I am using my iMac using iChat to talk to a newer iMac that doesn't have iChat. We had this working using Messages and Facetime (on the new machine) talking to my existing iChat account. One day last week, when Facetime rang, my kids answered on the iPad. Dang! Now it's all fouled up! The new iMac won't see my AIM account name and shows that I'm offline, because the iPad is off. We were able to call using "most recent call" in Facetime, but now I can't go and control that new iMac remotely to help with some email concerns the user is having. I'm trying to not personalize this too much, but it's grandkids talking to Grandma and Mom and Dad trying to solve new machine hiccups. Normally, I could just go in via iChat and control the other machine and troubleshoot, but I can't do it with Facetime only. My buddy list doesn't see  the other computer even though we are connected on Facetime right now. My name is not highlighted for the other computer. What could have gone so wrong?
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • 1st Generation iPod (5GB) not working with new iMac

    Hi,
i have the Problem, that my 1st generation iPod is not detected by my new imac (20'' 2,4 Ghz). When i plug in the firewire cable, nothing happens. DiscUtility sees no disc at all.
But when i plug in the iPod "behind" another Firewire disc (acting as a fw-hub), the iPod ist detected within a second, and everything works fine.
I just wanted to know if someone else is having this Problem, or if someone else has a working iPod 1.Gen on the new iMac.
    Thanks
    Joerg

    Hi JvdL,
I am one with a 1st gen iPod (Windows, 10GB).
But I have no problems with it and I also don't have a last gen. iMac.
However, in the iPod Forum http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=151 and in the iTunes Forum http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=149&start=0#threads there are quite some threads with similar problems.
    Sorry

  • Re-imaged brand new iMac and no longer boots

    Hiya,
I did this in the past and naively did it again!  We use a fairly up to date image that we restore machines with, however on this occasion a new iMac came in and I re-imaged it.  Sad to say, the machine boots up with a slightly turned no entry sign.  I seen this in the past and think it has something to do with the image not recognising the new chipset...
However, I tride the Recovery technique to download and install a fresh copy onto the mac-hd.  It seems to work with no error issues and gets as far as rebooting but then the no entry sign appears again!
Does anyone have any ideas as I doubt we will get a new iMac in any time soon to take an image of it?
    Thanks

New machines usually come with a computer-specific build, rendering installing images made with earlier versions unworkable. However, since wiping and restoring via the recovery mode failed, contact Apple's Express Lane and let them sort things out.
P.S. Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try recovery again.

  • IPod no longer works with Older iMac (works with new iMac)

    Hi all:
First off sorry about the cross post but I got no response to this question in the other forum. Hoping for help from this group. Thanks!!!!
I have an iMac Duo (20" 2.0Ghz) running 10.4.8 and iTunes 7.0.1 which recognizes my 5g (and my wife's 4g) no problem. However when I attach either of them to my G3 (G3 500 MHz) running 10.2.8 (iTunes 6.0.5) they are not recognized.
I believe that the 5G won't work because the G3 does not have USB 2. However, I do not understand why the 4G does not work.
The 4G worked with the G3 for about 2 years. I have not tried to attach it to the G3 since we bought new computers (iMac for me, MacBook Pro for her) until today. I wanted to use it to transfer some files from the G3 to the new iMac.
I have tried forcing the 4G into disk mode and connecting it to the G3 but that did not help (I tried this with the 5G also).
I am using a USB cable with the 5G and a firewire cable with the 4G.
According to software update all of the computers are 100% current.
Thanks for any and all help!
    Gary

I'm no geek but I can say that my 5G video iPod works just fine with my B&W G3 (450Mhz processor), which I am pretty sure only has USB 1. My G3 is running iTunes 7 and OS 10.4.5. Updating may solve your problem.

  • HT201250 I use Time Machine to back up my entire computer with my external hard drive. I am getting a brand new iMac this month and was wondering what is the process of using this back up to restore my new computer exactly how my old computer was?

I use Time Machine to back up my entire computer with my external hard drive. I am getting a brand new iMac this month and was wondering what is the process of using this back up to restore my new computer exactly how my old computer was? I want to make sure I will still have various important files on my new computer, like my songs in iTunes, my photos in iPhoto, etc, etc. Thanks so much in advance!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
When you turn on the new iMac for the first time, Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so connect the external disk and follow steps to restore all your files to your new iMac. Your new Mac will have the same settings and programs as your old computer.
In other cases, I would recommend to restore the whole backup without using Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant, but a Late 2012 iMac uses a special OS X build, so the OS X version that you're using on your old Mac won't work on the new one.
