New iMac for Pro Use

When we replaced our last Pro Machine back in 2005 it was replaced with an iMac 20". Well we use it for Graphic Design and it served us well until the logic board failed. So we ordered a new i5 27" iMac. Anyone else use iMacs for pro Macs? We run Adobe creative suite 4, Freehand, Quark and office. Any issues with these apps running Snow leopard? Do you feel the performance of the iMac will do well with these apps?
By the way I found a place that repairs the logic boards in G5 imac so I removed and sent it out for repair. If all goes well this will be a nice hand me down for the kids. So far they love the G4 12" powerbook we handed down to them. 9 year old twins using macs which the prefer over the PC.

Sounds like you're on the track, I found a link from Apple that offers a competitive upgrade from Freehand to CS4 for $199. If your business is relying on it then that might be the road to take.
I've heard of some work arounds for your Laserwriter but not being a LW owner I don't have any experience. The good news is high quality Laser printers have come way down in price, I have 2 connected to my system (both HP's) that work great. The youngest one (Color LJ 2600N) is about 4 years old and works great as does my little black and white LJ 1012 which is my everyday work horse.
Another solution is HP has a new line of printers out that are inkjets but cost up to 50% less to operate than a laser and provides very high quality. If you at all interested the link is:

  • Buying new IMac for IMovie use

I am purchasing a new IMac. What kind of memory do you recommend for using iMovie. If you recommend 1G, do you recommend buying one 1G, or 2 512s?
What kind of routine problems have been occurring with iMovie? With my five year old Mac I routinely had a problem with video and audio not synching and I know from reading posts that that was a problem for many people

    IMAC   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

If you recommend 1G, do you recommend buying one 1G, or 2 512s?
That depends. Do you plan to install more RAM later? Then go for the single 1GB. Personally I find it doubtful to have more than 1GB of RAM, unless you HAVE TO run a lot of apps at the same time on a regular basis (such as making it your business).
As for the sync problem, it can be avoided by recording 16-bit audio.

  • I am trying to move my wife's iPhoto '08 library to my new iMac for iPhoto '11.

I am trying to move my wife's iPhoto (2007) library on a Macbook to my new iMac for iPhoto '11.  First, when I opened iPhoto on the iMac it asked me to create a library, which I did.  Then I imported her photos via a wireless network to my "new" library.  However, when it finally finished importing, it had imported 3 copies of each photo from her library.  I deleted the "new" library and started over.
Second, I opened iPhoto on the iMac and chose to use "other library."  I chose my wife's shared iPhoto library and it began transferring the photos to the new iMac (or so I thought).  This worked beautifully as it only brought over single photos and not 3 copies like discussed above.  After editing the new library and adding some photos from an old PC, I shut down iPhoto.  A few hours later I tried to open iPhoto on the iMac and it gave me the opening screen again with choices to create a new library or use a different library.  As it turns out, my wife's Macbook and been disconneted from our wireless network.  I was able to figure out that that unless my wife's Macbook is connected to the network then I cannot access the iPhoto library on my iMac.  I was under the impression that I had copied her library to my computer and that the photo files were now on the hard drive of the iMac.  So when her computer is offline I can no longer access the imported library.  I want her library to stay on the iMac as we plan to sell her Macbook.  As you now know, we cannot access her iPhoto library on the Macbook since she is running an older version of iPhoto.
So, what I would like to do is to completely transfer the photos from her Macbook to my new iMac and be able to access them on the iMac regardless of whether she is on the network or not because we plan to sell her Macbook to a friend.  Thank you for any help you can provide.

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
Then hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
and select the Library that you moved.  That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
Your first option didn't work because you imported one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
Your second option didn't work because you simply referenced her library on the old machine.

No, it's done on the computer, it's just done on the web and not through iTunes. I guess you could do it on the iPhone, but it would be easier to do on the computer.
Just go to the site linked above, then click on the big blue button and fill out the neccessary information.

I've had my new iMac for about a week now and am totally sick ofthe vagueries of Mavericks,
I would appreciate any help you guys could give me to help me 'downgrade' to Mountain Lion.
I understand that Mountain Lion has never been released on disc, so that would seem to be the major problem.
    Thanks in advance

If the Mac came pre-installed with Mavericks you can't downgrade. Have a look at mine and den.thed's comments here:

  • Using the optical drive of a MacBook Pro from new iMac for iTunes

Can I connect my macbook pro to my new iMac (no optical drive) with ethernet cable and use the optical drive of the macbook pro to upload CDs to iTunes on the new iMac?

On my 17" MacBook Pro I use the eSata port for Black X Duet Hard Drive Docking station where I put 2 1TB Hitachi internal drives. They are swappable and are about $80.00US. I use the USB port for my system backup and a G-force 500 MB bus powered portable drive on the FW800 port just for the heck of it. It works out really well for me.

  • IMac for Gaming using Win XP Pro

Early 2006 I purchased an iMac 2.0 w/ 2G RAM using x1600 ATI card w/ beta boot camp using XP Pro for gaming purposes.
Now I want to expand my horizons a bit to a new iMac with the same idea as above.
My gaming includes Battlefield 2, COD4, and soon Crysis. So here is the system I want:
iMac 3.06 w/ nvidia 8800 GS which I read is NOT the 8800 but some other nvidia card. I want to expand to 4G RAM, BUT replacing all the RAM with either Crucial or Kingston for Dual Channel. Will XP Pro be stable w/ 4G dual channel? Will this system utilize DX 10. w/ the nvidia card on this Mac? If I get Crysis, I want to be able to set everything on HIGH. Are there any Driver problems that I should be aware of?

  • Oldish MacBook Pro vs New Imac for Logic9

I have a 3 year old MacBook Pro Dual Intel 2.4 - 4GB RAM, I've used it extensively for recording and livework. Recently I started using WAVES plugins and I've finding that I've reached a limit on how many channels I can have before the CPU overload.
I'm looking to upgrade the recording setup and leave the laptop for live work. I don't want to break the bank but have a computer which can handle a few more channels of plugins etc.
The new imac states it has an Intel i3 processor - is this quicker then the dual intel in the macbook pros, and will this be an improvement in logic? I'm looking to upgrade the RAM to 8GB.
    Many thanks for your help.

Hold tight for a short while... there is an expected refresh if the imacs.
These machines will undoubtedly outperform your MBP (and have thunderbolt).

  • 24" iMac for Good for Pro Use?

    Hi,
I am considering getting a 24" iMac. I would like to get a Mac Pro with a pro display but my budget does not stretch that far. I have no worries about the speed of the Duo 2 Core 2.4Ghz, my concern is about the DISPLAY. I am going to be working in Photoshop editing images. I am a professional photographer. I went to my local Apple Store and took a look and I did see on the 20" the gradient thing. On the 24" it looked better but with a flat grey background image it did look completely uneven.
Are these displays up to handing pro work? Does the glossy screens render colors badly, even after a calibration. How concerned should I be about this?
    Thanks,
    Martin.

I recently faced the same dilemma. I am also a pro photographer and need to have my monitor calibrated to my Epson 2200. I decided that the glare from the new IMAC LCDs was unacceptable and would make it difficult to edit my photos. In addition, the new glossy screens have more impact than the matte screens due to increased contrast and color saturation which would also make calibration difficult. About 4 weeks ago, I bought a white 24" previous generation IMAC with a matte screen since I didn't want to spend the additional money to buy a Mac Pro.
The screen on my new computer has a light to dark gradient going from left to right that is not optimal for photo editing. This seems to be a common issue on both the new aluminum 24" and the white 24" LCD screens. Hopefully Apple will come up with a fix for this issue.
The screen is also too bright but thats just another issue.

  • Buying a new iMac; can i use my eMac as a second display?

Hi, I'm just about to buy an iMac (intel core 2 duo), probably 17" 2 GHz with some extra RAM.
I currently have an eMac, and now I wonder, is there any way to use it (the eMac) as a second display for the iMac? Obviously, the eMac doesn't have any video input, but I'm thinking that maybe there is some third party solution that could send the second screen image through ethernet, firewire or usb? Or if there is any other way to solve this. Since I'm going to use the iMac for Logic Pro, I find it usable to keep the arrange window and mixer window on seperate screens, and I can't quite afford buying a new screen atm.
Though, if it doesn't work to do like this, maybe I'll buy an extra screen at some point in the future. Would I, in that case, need a special graphics card on the iMac? Or does it support two screens (with seperate content) as it is?
    Thanks!

    Hello,
Thanks for this great reply! I marked it as helpful.
By the way I happened to write another reply myself
(not to you, to my own post) while you wrote yours,
just wanted to note that to avoid confusion. I'm not
very used to these forums, sorry...
Yes, the forums can take some getting used to.
I saw your second post, and that is why I wrote my second reply. I thought you were clarifying based on my reply See we all get confused sometimes
Anyway, I guess a delay would probably grow
incredibly irritating very quickly, so I guess it
wouldn't be an acceptable sustainable solution,
    really.
Yes, the delay would probably be quite a problem in real use. The only way I could see around it would be to move slowly and then stop and make sure that the pointer doesn't end-up beyond where you stopped.
If you waited say 3 or 4 seconds and then clicked, you would know that the pointer is where it is.
But, that would slow-down your productivity.
I think a second monitor would be best.
So maybe buying a new screen is the best/only
"solution"... In that case, I think an LCD screen is
probably best as CRT's sometimes interfer with sound
equipment... So not having to turn one screen off
everytime I want to use a microphone would be
    convenient.
Yes, an LCD screen would probably be much more convenient. I much prefer LCD screens myself.
So, I'll simply be on the outlook for used LCD
    screens, then... Thanks!
You're welcome. Glad I could help.
Let me know if you have other questions.

  • New Imac, has problem using previous portable hard drive

Been using a Seagate portable hard drive on various apple computers for 3 years. had a new one for school this year, and went to use it on our new computer. it does not recognize the hard drive, when you plug it in. did I forget something here?
    Scott

Illaass, yes I have used this drive on MANY apple compuers from Imac, to mac pro's and my laptop at home. it has worked flawlessly on all of them. It is formatted to Mac. appears to be in working order, and works fine when I transfer it back to my laptop. "problem" laptop does not hold Photoshop, and I have work to do.
It appears to be spinning, and cable apears functional.
noyt sure about the last question though? I do not find the drive ANYWHERE on the new computer.

  • Yosemite & new iMac not seen using 5Gz wireless

I have a new iMac and an older macbook pro plus a number of other devices on my home network.
All my devices connect using 2.4GHz wireless except my iMac which uses 5 GHz wireless. Everything was working fine up until I upgraded to Yosemite OS X. Now all my devices on the 2.4 GHz wireless can see each other fine. But they can't see my iMac and my iMac can't see them. The error is "no route to host". The firewall on the iMac is off so it should work.
So it seems related to the fact that my iMac is on the different wireless frequency, as all the other devices are fine. I upgraded both my macbook and iMac to Yosemite so it is not Yosemite purely at fault. There seems to be a problem routing from my iMac to the other devices on the BT Hub.
I think it is a BT Hub 5, it's certainly very recent.
    Any help?

    Hi,
Thanks for the quick reply. It didn't work however. I reset the hub, and my devices so they all reset all their connection information.
    To be clear,
I have the iMac - with newly installed OS X Yosemite, it connects to the hub fine and has internet connection fine through the hub. It is connected on 5 GHz wireless.
I have a macbook pro - with newly installed OS X Yosemite, it connects to the hub fine and has internet connection. It connects at 2.4 GHz wireless.
I have a bunch of other devices on the network that connect at 2.4 GHz wireless.
If I ping a device from my macbook it gets a reply and can see them fine. If I ping my iMac it times out, i.e. it can't see the iMac.
Likewise I can't ping any devices from my iMac.
This is a bit of a problem as I use my iMac as a home server for music and films.
It used to work fine when both my iMac and MBP were on Mavericks. It only started happening when I upgraded to Yosemite. Though Yosemite works fine on my MBP.
