New iMac G5 (w/ iSight) Having Airport (1st Gen) Issues

My school just got our first iMac G5. The computer sees the internet, connected via a 1st Generation Airport Base Station. Everything works fine - signal is strong, all the other computers work fine with it, but this new computer isn't getting any internet.
Network settings does say "You are connected to the internet via Airport" and all the other settings match the other computers exactly.
Any ideas?

Hi,
Check the Airport pull-down menu and choose the network you're trying to connect to. You might have to introduce a password for it. This might work instantly.
Check the network pane of the system preferences app. Choose Airport form the pull-down menu and verify that you have all the information filled. Then click Apply.
Hope this helps,
Gonçalo

Or you can use a third-party utility such as Phone to Mac - Pod to Mac.

  • Comparing focus of new iMac's internal iSight video

I have a new iMac. When I view iSight's live feed in, say, Photo Booth or iMovie, it seems like the focus is not very sharp.
I've tried the suggestions in Apple's tech note on iSight.
Here are a few shots (posted to Picasa) I took. This is with artificial light, as it is late at night:
    http://picasaweb.google.com/lagouyn/UntitledAlbum?feat=directlink
Daytime/natural light results are, to me, similarly blurry.
Maybe I'm expecting too much? Could I ask new iMac users to check out the photos above and compare with your iSight video quality.
Could you also post examples of your built-in iSight image quality? (To capture an image, I used utilities/Grab and did Capture>Selection, then saved to disk and uploaded to Picasa.
    Thanks very much.

One added thought, -Allan, if you do not already know about the following.
(If you are an imaging pro who could be teaching me about this, please excuse my attempt to help.)
I can see that image quality for your viewers is important to you.
For uploads of images whose quality is particularly important to you, you may want consider using PNG format, TIFF format, or some other low/no compression image file format rather than the JPEG image format that you chose for your upload in this topic.
You noted the "dithered/pixelated quality" of the gif format sample image I had uploaded in another thread. While highly compressed GIF images certainly suffer more quality loss than moderately compressed JPGs, PNG or TIFF can reduce compression loss even further.
JPEG can offer control over how much compression you apply when saving your image. However, other file formats like PNG or TIFF can further reduce quality loss by not applying as much compression for those image where you consider quality to be critical in your viewed images.

  • New iMac doesn't play nice with 2nd gen nano-- help!

I have a brand-new iMac just bought a few weeks ago (running 10.5.6 and iTunes version 8), and I'm having a problem getting it to talk to my 2nd generation nano. When I connect the nano, I get this message:
"An iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPod, then try again. If the problem persists, reinstall the iPod support software from the Optional Installs on the Mac OS X install disc."
The iPod still works fine with my Macbook Pro (using the same cable), and the firmware is up to date. It is also recognized in disk mode by the iMac.
Some of the things I've tried already:
-Reinstalling the iPod support software as instructed.
    -The 5 r's
-Unplugging other USB devices (the only other USB device was a keyboard anyway).
-restarting the computer with the iPod plugged in.
    -Unplugging from the internet.
-Uninstalling iTunes, installing an old version (7.6) and using that.
Has anyone else had this problem with the new iMac? Does anyone have any ideas????
    Thanks,
    A.

Well...I went out and got myself a third generation nano (as I lost my old one anyway). Same problem. This is really frustrating; does anyone have an answer?

  • Is the new Pages iOS 5 app compatible with 1st gen iPad?

Hello, I should point out that I have upgraded my iPad software to the new iOS 5 version.  I just saw in the Apps store since the new Pages update a few days ago, that some people are complaining about incompatibility for the 1st gen iPad.  Any truth to that before I purchase?
    Thanks!
    -Jack

    Hello All,
Guess what?  Yes indeed the newly updated Pages works perfectly with the 1st gen iPad like what I've got.  And documents do, in fact, work in either portrait or landscape mode automatcially as you turn your iPad.  Apparently, you should first update to the new iOS5 before you install the new Pages.
    Thought I'd throw that out,
    -Jack
P.S.  Pages is fantastic on the iPad and especially when it's hooked up with the Apple wireless keyboard.

  • 1st gen issues

I haven't looked very hard but has Apple stopped supporting the 1st generation iPod on 10.5.5?? I plug it in via firewire to my iMac 3.06, but it only charges... it doesn't even appear on the System profiler. It connects to my iMac G3 just fine. Maybe it's Apple's way of telling me to stop being cheap and get some new technology. LOL He11, on 11/09 it'll be 7 years old.
    Sal

It should still work fine. I don't have a working 1G at the moment, but my similar 2G works fine with 10.5.5. Try shutting down (powering off) and restarting with the iPod attached, if you have not done so yet.
Since it uses a regular FireWire cable, I would try a different one. The connectors of the cable can become worn, and no longer work for data (even if it still works for power). Since it works on your G3 iMac, it would be a combination of wear on connector and port.
You should also test the FireWire port with another device (or try the other one if the Mac has more than one). FireWire ports have been known to go bad.
Try running Disk Utility to see of the iPod's drive shows up there.
Edit: Also try resetting the iPod if you did not try that yet.

And of that does not work, put it into Disk Mode, then connect to the Mac.

  • How do I connect Airport Extreme and Time Capsule to my new iMac so that AE is used for network and TC only used for Time Machine backup?

I didn't realize that Time Capsule will only support the print function of a wireless multifunction printer.  So I want to use Extreme for my network to have full use of my printer and use TC as the Time machine backup only.  How to I make the connections?

Thanks for your response and this is getting complicated but I just purchased a new iMac as well as the Airport TC.  I've had the Airport Extreme for a year or so.  The Airport Extreme worked perfectly with my old iMac wirelessly and I had all functions of my printer with no problems.  I was expecting the same with the TC.  But the instruction that came with TC say to connect the printer to the TC via USB...which I did.  And the print function worked perfectly but nothing else.  In researching I discovered that when wired that way the TC only supports the print function...not scan or fax or anything else.  I tried going wireless since my AE worked perfectly via wireless but I got no printer functions at all that way.  But I'm wondering also if I tried that during a time I was having other issues...I had to delete and re-add my printer which solved some other problems.  I may try that again...and see if I can get all print functions with just the TC connected
As far as connecting both your AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule on your network, we're not clear on exactly how you want to do this.  Will the AirPort Extreme connect to your modem using an Ethernet cable and the Time Capsule connect to the AirPort Extreme using an Ethernet cable?.......or......do you want the Time Capsule to connect to the network using wireless?
Well... first of all I would like not to have to use the AE at all...I would prefer using just my TC for network, all print functions and Time Machine backup if that's possible. My printer will not accept Ethernet connections (Canon MX512).
After failing at getting this to work, I decided I would try to use my AE for net and print functions and just use my TC for Time Machine backup.  I tried several different connection configurations with no success until finally I connected cable modem to my AE via Ethernet and went wireless with the AE and printer. but connected the AE to the TC via Ethernet and amazingly everything worked like a charm (for a while) and I was patting myself on the back for being so smart.  But now I find that the connection only lasts for a short time.  If I leave it for a while the TC goes invisible...or at least I see a message saying the Ethernet is unplugged...but it is not... and I lose internet connection even though I have a green light on my AE. So now I'm at a loss. I don't know why I keep losing network signal and why my system thinks the Ethernet is unplugged.
So... after all this...I figured I wasn't so smart after all and I must have things wired incorrectly.
So... it sounds like you are saying I should go back and try again to get my new TC to work as I want it to via wireless instead of connecting via USB...is that correct?  Could you tell me exactly how I should wire my equipment from cable modem to AE and/or TC to achieve net capability, full functions of my printer and Time Machine backup...
    Thanks...

  • Brand new Imac user having trouble importing photos (jpgs)

I am a brand new iMac user and am having trouble importing some of my photos into my new computer.
    Here is my dilemma:
    * All of my pics are jpgs that were shot using a sony DSC-W50 digital camera.
    * All were backed up on my exteral harddrive from my old Sony PC.
    * I loaded all of them onto my new iMac into the "Photos" area
    * When I try to import them to the iPhoto library, I get a message that either says "already in the iPhoto library" or 'unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data"
    * I can open all of the photos that I get this error msg on in other photo programs so I know the files are photos and are good.
    HELP!
    iMac

iPhoto is not an image viewer, it's a Database with built-in image viewer, lightweight editing and version control, and like any database, data needs to be imported. However, iPhoto will not import from the iPhoto Library Folder.
So, move the photos to the Desktop and then import them from there.
    Here's what happens next:
iPhoto will make a copy of them in the iPhoto Library Folder. There they will be put into the Originals Folder. Here's how the iPhoto Library Folder is organised:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
This allows the Photos -> Revert to Original command - very useful if you don't like the changes you've made.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss.
If you need any more asistance post more.
    Regards
    TD

  • I got a new imac and the airport utility does not work with my older airport express. What can I do???

How can I get my new iMac to see my old Airport Express so I can play my music to a remote speaker?

Move the Mountain Lion version of Airport Utility to the Trash. Airport Utility is located in the Utilities folder.
Kappy, you cannot move AirPort Utility in Mountain Lion to the trash in a normal way. Apple will not let you do this.....It is part of the Mountain Lion operating system....and cannot be modified or trashed.

  • New iMac Frame Loose

I'm working on my folks brand new iMac G5 with iSight built in. I was having trouble ejecting a CD and noticed that the white plastic "frame" around the monitor is loose. It doesn't appear to snap back into place.
I contacted tech support via the new chat feature and they said bring it to an Apple store. Well, all Apple stores are closed tomorrow and I planned on bringing their machine to them of Thanksgiving.
Any thoughts? Has anyone cracked the case and knows how to put it back solidly?
    -Kirk

This has bad news written all over it, i would wait if i were you and take it to an apple store. If this is broke so soon, i would not stand for it. Im sure apple will be happy to help you out with this..

  • My new iMac's internal microphone is not being recognized by other applications (such as Skype or rosetta stone)?

I just bought a new iMac.  I'm having trouble with the internal microphone.  I went to systems preferences> sound, and checked the input levels.  The computer shows recieved sound from internal microphone and a USB connected microphone.  However, no one on Skype can hear me, and microphone isn't recognized while using rosetta stone.  Does anyone know what could be the problem with my internal mic?

I did get an answer to my problem.  It was specifically with skype and Rossetta Stone.  I had to re-install the apps and then do the general upgrade.  It fixed the problem.  Works fine now.

  • Connecting a 1994 HP Laserjet 4MP printer to my new iMac

Hello all. I just recently bought a new iMac, and I am having difficulty getting an older HP Laserjet 4MP printer to communicate properly with the iMac. I originally thought that I needed a parallel to usb cable, so I bought one of these, but the computer would work briefly for one print out and then fail to print again. I then read the printer's manual, and it indicates that if you are going to connect the printer to a macintosh computer you need to use a standard 8 pin localtalk cable. I still have my original localtalk cable from when I used to use this printer with an older powermac in the early 90s, but I cannot find on the internet, or in any stores, a female 8 pin to usb adapter.
Does anyone have any suggestions or thoughts on what I might try, or perhaps recommend a place to purchase the correct adapter / cable? I really like this printer and it has been working great, so I hate to get rid of it. Thanks in advance for any replies you all have. If I cannot come up with a solution I might just buy a new printer.

    D. P.
I wouldn't bother with any 8 pin arrangement as that is putting a further complication in the chain.
The Keyspan USB to parallel adaptor cable is on this page.
    http://www.keyspan.com/products/homepage.2.productList.Parallel.spml
I have used this cable on three Mac OS's (10.2, 10.3 and10.5) without the need to load any driver for it. The Mac seems to know what it is.
However, if you can send a page to the printer with what you have, then I am unsure, if what you have is sufficient, or if the keyspan version somehow handles the Input/Output data transfer better.
I am reluctant to advise you buying this if it is not going to change anything without first investigating if the driver you are using is causing this one page then stop behaviour.
When you click in Print and Fax, highlight the HP and where is says Kind it may say
Generic postscript Printer, whereas it would be better if if said GutenPrint v5.13.
However I did not have to do anything to get this setting, Leopard just found it.
You could select the printer again, with it switched on and in the left hand panel, control click and choose Reset printing System, as this may reset the driver to GutenPrint.
If that fails to set it, click on *Open Print Queue* ... then Info, then click on Driver and select GutenPrint v5.13 from the list, and see how that goes.

  • Question about installing Elements 11 on new iMac

I have a DVD version of Photoshop Elements 11 that I purchased with a new camera last year, and a new iMac. I am having installation problems with it.  When I tried to install it, I get a dialog box that says it failed to initialize.  Please advise.

There are normally two disks. One Windows and One Mac. Ensure you have the correct disk.

  • New iMac, few issues

    Hello All.
I've just purchased a new iMac and I'm having a few issues with it, I'm wondering if anyone knows how I can fix them, I've tried doing all of the latest software updates but the issues still prevail.
    1) CMD+TAB
When I use CMD+TAB about 70% of the time, the Application Switcher doesn't show, but it switches Applications successfully.
When the Application Switcher does show; half of the time only some of the Applications I have open are visible, if I CMD+TAB again straight after a different random selection of Applications are shown.
    2) Quick Look.
If I use space to quicklook in the Finder, I can never close the window, neither the X icon or hitting space again will close it.
    3) Displays Control Panel.
Won't open, the title bar says 'Loading Displays..' but it just freezes.
    4) Photoshop CS5
Very unstable (have updated to newest version).
    5) Random finder stuff
Sometimes Finder windows just go white, completely blank, I can still drag them around and right click them and the correct contextual menu comes up for that part of the window but it is still white.
There are lots of other things too, these are the most annoying so I've kept it to the most annoying, especially the CTRL+TAB thing.

You can take it to any Authorized Apple Service center. But if you have an actual Apple Store handy, that would be far preferable.
