New iMac hangs itself

hi
i have a new iMac 2.8 Ghz with 3GB RAM. It has now happened regularly that it hangs itself in Command & Conquer 3 Gameplay. The funny thing is that the sound contines playing whilst the video either stops moving or the screen drops to black/dark. The only thing to do is a restart.
and this does not happen after hours of play but pretty much att the beginning. I guess it is video card driver related - something i heard about before? what to do??

some update fixed it

  • My brand new iMac reboots itself without any reason

    Hi guys,
My brand new iMac (fully loaded late 2012, 27", i7, 3TB fusion drive) reboots itself suddenly without any reason several times per day. After some testing I think I may have found what causes the rebooting. When I plug (and push in) some usb-devices like external drive or iPhone into a usb-slot (3rd. slot from the side) my iMac reboots. Also when a usb device is plugged in the same 3rd. usb-slot the computer reboots occasionally. My question is: does rebooting problem look to you like a hardware or software issue?

Could be either. Regardless, take the computer back. If you are within 14 days from purchase date you can request a replacement, no questions asked.

  • New iMac hangs on shutdown

Hello, maybe someone know what could be with my iMac 21.5-inch: 3.06GHz Intel Core i3,(OS X 10.6.6) Everything was working fine for about a couple weeks, but now it hangs at shut down. I left for a bit thinking it would eventually shut down, but came back an hour later to find it still spinning on the grey screen,I left during the night, but nothing has changed still spinning on the grey screen. The only way to shut it down was to hold the power button.
and another problem is when it is sleep mode, it automatically turns on for 10 seconds and switches off,and so several times a day.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks!

I have this problem and tried everything here but it still does it. It's ok if I boot in safe mode but any user account (new or old) and it hangs when shutting down, My iMac is only a month old.

  • Brand new iMAC keeps hanging

    Hi All
I received my brand new iMAC today - having never had a MAC anything before - decided to switch as fed up of hanging, viruses etc on PCs and also need more multimedia options.
Have set it all up it keeps hanging - for no reason i click on force quit and sometimes it will and sometimes it won't even do that - I am totally confused it has done it to me on MAC Office, iCalc, i photos, i tunes etc etc
Do i have a dud machine am i doing something wrong???? Please help.
    Cheers

    Kazzaboobers,
Welcome to the forum. Chances are you don't have a dud. In case you haven't read the manual I would recommend doing so before playing with your machine, you will be surprised what you learn.
Also when you mention the machine is hanging please describe with a little more detail so we can understand exactly what you mean.
You are covered by 90 days for free telephone support, if the problem persists take advantage of the support and give Apple a call. In the rare event you did get a dud they will replace the machine within 14 days of purchase.
Last IMHO it is a good idea to get AppleCare, this gives you 3 years of phone support and an additional 2 years of warranty. You can find it online (Amazon for example) for less than Apple charges.

  • I'm trying to set up a dual monitor for my new iMac. I'm using a second display I used with my old G5. My iMac recognizes the second monitor but the monitor won't turn on. Power button doesn't do anything on the monitor itself.

I'm trying to set up a dual monitor for my new iMac. I'm using a second display I used with my old G5. My iMac recognizes the second monitor but the monitor won't turn on. Power button doesn't do anything on the monitor itself.

If it won't turn on then the monitor is dead (power supply?, video circuits?).  Not worth repairing.
If you have a new iMac then it has thunderbolt.  So exactly what is that monitor you are trying to connect?  For TB you can connect a mini-displayport monitor.   Probably (not 100% sure with TB) can use dvi or vga too if you have the appropriate adapter.

  • My imac hangs up after upgrading to new os

After upgrading to new OS my imac hangs up where it never has done this before. My apple care has long sinse expired and I am really bummed. It was clearly related to the new OS. Any suggestions for relief?

    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitirion & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk.

How is the C6200 connected to the iMac, is it via USB or Wi-Fi? If it's via Wi-Fi please make sure it's connected to the router using the printer's Network Wizard. Then click System Preferences - Print & Scan and assuming the iMac is on the same network as the printer, if it is the printer should be seen. If it's not then click the + sign and add the printer. Apple provides instructions in Printing Overview OS X Lion

  • Brand new 27'' i5 iMac hangs for ever at the apple screen

After 10 days of normal usage, by brand new iMac 27'' i5 started to hang during startup (rotating cursor at the apple screen). I found unreparable errors with Disk Utility, erased and re-formatted disk with zeros and reinstalled Mac OS X snow leopard. The iMac worked for a short period but soon after restarting gave the same problem of hanging at startup and unreparable disk errors. Resetting SMC and PRAM made the situation only worse since the Mac OS X startup disk refused to eject or operate (pressing C at startup). My only contact with the iMac (the slow DVD player) was now unreachable, too
I contacted Apple Call Center in Greece and asked them if I could return this faulty iMac (Dead On Arrival, DOA) with a new one, since I don't want any Service Center fiddling with a brand new, expensive but faulty iMac, that could soon give the same or worse problems. They told me that it is not Apple's policy in many countries(??) to replace DOA Apple machines.
I was wondering if this is true in other countries and whether Apple would play with it's own reputation by forcing users to "live" with "faulty in the box" Apple computers.
I'm very sad since I paid 2000 euros and the only thing I got is all this aggrevation!!
Any help or information and similar experiences would be appreciated.

Hi I posted this reply on another topic today re freezing and hanging imac but it seems to have gone missing so I am posting this copy now so you will see what I have done. I have had the same freezing/hang problems. My imac is ok for a few minutes and then freezes. So after a lot of frustration I brought it to an Apple agent on 16th December. He could not find any obvious problem so he rebuilt directories with disk warrior and it worked perfecttly until the 24th December
and it was turned off until the 31st December. When it was restarted again it was back to the same spinning beach ball of death. I tried verify permissions and disk repair which said no obvious hard disk problem. I too sent screen shots to Apple on the 6th Jan but have heard nothing back from their engineers. So I brought my imac back to Apple agent on the 7th Jan and he has told me he has replaced the hard drive because I really think he could not pinpoint the real problem. My data could not be retrieved. The cost to me is 249euro or $303. Not really impressed with Apple or imac as this is the second big problem with this imac in 3 years and this time it is not covered by warranty. My computer equipment is never abused or worked full belt. So frustrating as I have loss 11 days worktime. If all these problems appear to be an Apple problem I think the least they can do is fix them for free

  • I have a new iMac that hangs at Create a Computer Account screen. Taking forever.

I just unboxed a new iMac and am attempting the initial setup. I get to the "Create a Computer Account" screen, fill in my name/accountname/password etc. Hit Continue and it has been spinning for ~30minutes.
Any tips on how to get around this?
    Thanks,
    Jason.

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.

  • Is it possible to hang/mount the new IMAC on the wall???

Just curious...just go one for my fiancee' and was wondering if it was possible to mount it to the wall to save a little space??? thanks Mike

No. Unlike the first two iMac G5 versions, the new iMac Intel CD---like the G5 iSight version it follows--- cannot have its stand removed from the back and is not VESA compliant.
Too bad, if you ask me, because the iMac would have been perfect if you could wall-mount it...

  • Hi I have just purchased a new iMac and I am trying to move my iTunes files into iTunes on the iMac.  I have got as far as pasting the music folder from my pc onto the desktop of my iMac.  How do I now put this folder into my iTunes?

I have just purchased a new iMac and this is all new to me as it is so different from my PC.  I am trying to transfer my iTunes from my PC onto the iMac, I have got as far as pasting the itunes music folder onto the desktop but I cant seem to transfer that into iTunes on my iMac. Can anyone help me out with this?

See iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer
BTW this list os for discussing the list itself. You'll get better response to questiosn you post if you post them to the correct list. I'll ask to have this moved to the iTunes list.

  • I've got a new IMAC, but i don't have all my music or movie purchase on it.  I just recently updated iTunes.  How do I get my purchases back?

Ive got a new iMac and now that i updated iTunes I do not have all my music and movie purchases.  How can I get it all back?.  I used to have it before update

It doesn't magically transfer itself, you have to do it.  Purchase may present themselves for re-downloading but things such as CD are only on the old machine or on the CD.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to select a library, then guide it to the 'iTunes Library.itl' file in the moved iTunes folder. If you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there. (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)
Downloading (using iOS or computer) past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519 - enabled with iTunes 10.3 and newer; not all media formats are available in all countries (see: iTunes in the Cloud, iTunes Match, and iTunes Radio availability by country - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5085); apps, books (not audiobooks), music, t.v. shows, and movies (some - not all studios have permitted this).  Downloading previously purchased movies and TV shows requires iTunes 10.6 or later.  Discontinued items not available. For items not included in the iCloud list (e.g., ringtones, audiobooks), or locations or computer systems where iCloud is not (yet?) available, you only get one download per fee paid.  Apple recommends,  "... back up your iTunes library. " (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519).
    Additional tip at https://discussions.apple.com/message/24176756#24176756
Select the iTunes Store on the left side of iTunes if you have the sidebar displayed, or with the button at the top right.
Click on Purchased on the right side under Quick Links.
You can re-download your available previous purchases.

  • New iMac running 10.10.1 frequently pauses, way too slow

I recently bought a 27 inch iMac, installed Yosemite, and migrated my files by time machine from a 5 year old macbook Pro running Snow Leopard. Since updating to 10.10.1, I frequently get the spinning beachball while I wait to continue, and everything seems much slower than it should. Safari downloads take forever, compared to Firefox. I ran an EtreCheck report pasted below. I tried some easy fixes like removing desktop clutter, reducing transparency, but that doesn't affect the overall slowness. Any solutions welcome!
    Problem description:
Installed Yosemite on new iMac, migrating from snow leopard on an older macbook pro.  Instead of being fast, processes frequently pause for bit while the beachball spins, then resume. Way too slow, much slower than my old macbook pro.

  • New iMac freezes?

I received my new 24" 2.8GHz iMac in early November w/4GB of Crucial memory, immediately repartitioned it, upgraded to Leopard, migrated my apps/accounts/data over from my 2.7GHz G5 Tower (which has been running Leopard perfectly), and ran Software Update to bring everything current.
This Mac has not experienced any obvious video artifacts, or freezes while processing intensive video activity, but it is heavily customized. Here's the details:
I've attached an Apple 23" Cinema HD Display for dual displays, a G-Tech 750GB FW800 drive for Time Machine, and a Kensington USB 2.0 powered hub to attach all my USB stuff (Harmon/Kardon SoundSticks, SanDisk memory card reader, extra Mighty Mouse, USB dock for iPhone, Canon LiDE 30 scanner, USB connection to APC Back-UPS RS 1500). I retired my old USB 1.1 hub, since I knew it would be problematic with the new system, as would be my old USB Serial Adapter.
From a software viewpoint, I have iWork '08, iLife '08, Adobe CS3 Suite, MS Office 2004 11.3.9, Indigo 2 (home automation control software), Meteorologist, and all the other usual Apple software. At login, I have Mail, Indigo 2, iTunes, iPhoto, iCal, Address Book, Meteorologist, and Activity Monitor startup, then share iTunes and iPhoto over the local network. I also share my data volume over the local network, as this new iMac is replacing our old Windows 2003 server as a home media/data repository.
To add to the mix, I'm also running SereneSaver Quicktime movies as Desktop backgrounds cycling every 5 minutes on both displays (although it only displays the first frame of the video on the secondary display). I was also running MacKiev's 3D Atlas Globe screen saver (displaying the latest satellite cloud cover) until I found it was locking up the new iMac in about 3 hours (with SereneSaver also running). Needless to say, this all ran perfectly on the old G5 Tower, even with its ancient ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (128MB) video card. And finally, in addition to the regular .Mac/iDisk updates, and the hourly Time Machine backups, and the quarter hour Meteorologist weather updates, and the every 5 minutes Mail updates, I was using Spaces to sort out all the windows that I wasn't hiding.
I knew I probably brought over some conflicting software, since this was a migration from a PPC Mac to an Intel iMac, so when things froze, I assumed it was a compatibility issue, and proceeded to start trashing obviously unnecessary stuff from the system/root/user libraries. I also assured everything that was running was current. Over a couple of days I thought I had pretty much found everything I could think of that might crash the new iMac (including old Symantec frameworks, MS Virtual PPC stuff, old auto startup Retrospect stuff, and the like). I tested all my apps, reran the Leopard 10.5.1 combo update, Repaired Permissions, Verified Disk (with Disk Utility), booted up from a Tiger 10.4.11 volume and checked the Leopard startup with DiskWarrior 4.0, and then ran Apple's Hardware Test from their iMac startup DVD. In the end, I was able to keep the new iMac up and running continuously performing its assigned chores for over 37 hours.
Then, yesterday afternoon in mid-post to one of these threads, my shiny new iMac froze up. No warnings of any kind. In mid-breath it simply stopped working. The blinking colon in the menu clock stopped, the Activity Monitor CPU history graph updating in the Dock stopping updating, neither mouse would move, pressing any combination of keys on the keyboard I could think of would not interrupt the iMac from its pause. So, I sucked it up and pressed the power button to restart.
Upon restart, I checked the Console logs, and of course, nothing untowards was identified there. Whatever froze up the iMac happened immediately. A close Apple contact of mine immediately suggested it sounded like a hardware issue. I didn't think so, but I took his advice anyway and reinstalled Leopard in a virgin partition on the internal hard drive, along with iWork '08, iLife '08, and all the latest Apple updates, again. I did not install Adobe CS3, since its installer disk doesn't finish properly in Leopard, and I didn't want to install Tiger first, then all it's updates, then CS3, then all its updates, then Leopard again. I just want to confirm, or not, that I'm having an obscure hardware issue.
Today I'm running the virgin installation (now 16 hours into the test) to see if I can crack the 37 hour barrier. If I make it to two full days, I'll be pretty confident that I must still be having software issues with my standard startup configuration. Of course, I'm not currently running any non-Apple software, and there's no legacy stuff on this startup partition, other than the music and photos I copied over from my data partition for sharing over the network at home. I'm also foregoing Indigo 2 controlling stuff around the house, and the great SereneSaver Quicktime movies playing soothing videos (beach scenes, peaceful lakes, mountain vistas, etc. with background sounds) as my Desktop background.
So, if this basic, virgin configuration locks up in the next day or so, my next step is to pull the Crucial 4GB of memory and put the standard Apple 2GB back in, and wait another couple of days. If that locks up, then it's a call to AppleCare. If not, then it's a call to Crucial to replace their memory modules.
My question is whether anyone else with a simpler configuration, and no obvious video issues (as confirmed by Software Update not offering the video firmware update), is experiencing any spontaneous freezes?
At this point, it's still premature to think I have a hardware issue, but if I do it should manifest itself with this basic, virgin installation.
    More updates later...

I have been experiencing a Restart/Shut Down reliability issue with my new iMac and Leopard 10.5.1. This evening an Apple rep I know pointed me to a work-around in Apple Discussions:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5957261&#5957261
This thread notes the discovery by one user that iDisk automatic syncing is not working reliably, and is preventing consistent restarting/shutting down of your Mac. Although, syncing has been working reliably for me both for .Mac stuff, and the iDisk itself, if you do a Get Info on your iDisk it reports, at least for me, that its capacity is 1TB, with 466GB available. I have only the standard 10GB .Mac account, and only 5GB of that is allocated to my iDisk, so something is clearly amiss with the .Mac iDisk setup (iDisk Get Info reports correctly on my G5 Macs w/Leopard), as being reported from the .Mac server. If you check your Console logs, you may also see this recurring error message, which is reporting a syncing error, although my syncs have, as I've said, been working correctly:
    11/25/07 9:11 PM FileSyncAgent192 MKCOL /.FileSync (FAILED), httpStatusCode:405, errorType:100, transactionState:5, txnId:3846B904-9ABB-40E5-9928-B9233FAC05D2, auto-retries=0, manual-retries=0
To summarize, if you turn off your iDisk in your System Preferences/.Mac/iDisk preference pane, you'll have no problems restarting/shutting down. You may also need to do the power management reset (turn off Mac, unplug all devices and power for 15 seconds, reconnect, and start up) and the parameter RAM reset (reboot while holding down the cmd-opt-P-R keys). You can do this in one restart cycle, if you like. After that, restarts/shutting down has worked perfectly for me.
Of course, I actually USE my iDisk, and will be leaving it on. But, at least I know now how to work around the restart/shut down issue. (Note: this morning my iMac running my full/standard configuration locked up, after the iDisk mounted/unmounted repeatedly during the evening, so I rebooted and switched iDisk syncing to manual. More to follow...)
I hope Apple adds this fix to their 10.5.2 update next month.
Note: This is such an important issue, that in addition to adding it to a reply in another Shut Down thread, I thought I'd post it as a separate topic here.

  • New iMac, migrated from macbook and now mail won't work. Tried re-installing operating system, still doesn't work. Can anyone help me to get mail working? thanks

I just bought a new iMac and I thought that it would be simple to migrate from my MacBook.
I have a time machine back-up so I decided to migrate using that. Everything seemed to instal pretty well with the exception of mail.  To begin with I had 2 mail icons, then I started to read some forums and checked that i had the one I wanted in the applications folder, deleted the other and then downloaded the new operating system.  Mail had to be force quit first and even when the download was complete Mail still wouldn't open or run. The only thing I can do is compose a new message, but I can't see my inbox at all.
It's really frustrating and I would love to know in a simple step by step guide how to get mail up and running with my existing migrated emails in it.
If anyone can give me some advice that would be great.
    thanks in advance.

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    First, empty the Trash.
Triple-click the line below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 -o -acl \) 2> /dev/null | wc -l
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
The output of this command, on a line directly below what you entered, will be a number such as "41." Please post it in a reply.
