New imac I7 and FCP

i am looking into getting the new imac with the i7 processor. i plan on running FCP 7 along with the usual motion and photoshop cs4 adobe after effects and lightroom 3 or lightroom 2 but my concern is this set up strong enough to run these apps without getting the {not responding] where i have to keep force quiting the apps. I have an older imac intel and i get not responding quite often when running FCP and is somewhat slow using photoshop. just before i plunk down this cash just want to know if this computer would be able to hold up.

It will run all those applications just fine.
What you need to consider is the iMac's total lack of expandability.
Ideally, you should always store your video footage on a separate drive, never on the same drive as the operating system and applications. In the iMac's case, you are limited to external FireWire 800 drives.
Will such drives be fast enough for the video formats that you intend to work with?

If you just bought the iMac and the Sjuperdrive take the superdrive back and get a refund. The by any other brand external DVD drive that connects by USB and try that. Most come with a Y USB cable to allow you to connect to 2 USB ports to supply enogh power to the drive IF Needed.
Or take both back and get a refund on both, you have 14 days to return it no questions asked, and buy another iMac and some other brand external DVD drive.

I like the idea of auto back-up for my new iMac, Ipad and PC Netbook, particularly if I can access all files and data stored on any device.  But I have a Conceptronic router.
    1. Will Time Capsule work with this and how?
    2. Can my printer USB be plugged in and then shared between the devices?
    3. Can I create a network and how?
    4.  What happend when a visitor logs onto my existing wireless router?
I'm new to Macs (well a returning user having started with Mac Plus!!) and not very technical.  Any help / advice will be much appreciated.

The key to what you seem to want to do is to be able to get Apple's Time Capsule router to "join" the network that your Conceptronic router.  I believe that works with some third-party routers, but I've never seen a list of those that work in such a configuration and I have no experience with Conceptronic equipment.
You might be better off with a Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device instead of a Time Capsule.

  • I just bought an new iMac 27 and is trying to transfer all my data from a late 2009 iMac 27

I need your help. I connected the old Mac as a disk to the new one with Firewire / Thunderbolt adapter, went through the Migration Assistant menu. The new iMac rebooted and started with setup process again, did this twice then I tried to restore from Time Machine backup, only the user account and data. It started well off but now it hangs with 4.31 hours left. What can I do ?, please help men on this.
    Best regards,Oli

Since it's a new machine, contact Apple's Support, formerly Apple Express Lane and let them sort things out for you.

  • Connecting a new iMac duo and iMac DVD SE

I've just bought a new iMac duo and would like to find out how to connect my old iMac DVD SE wirelessly. I phoned the local apple store and they were totally unhelpful and told me I can no longer buy an airport card for my old imac and could provide me with no alternative solution.
I have upgraded my broadband to the BT Home Hub and would like to connect the 2 macs to the internet and possibly share a printer.
I'd appreciate any advice on where to start with this.

iMac DVD SE   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hello,
Option 1. According to BT's site the Home Hub has two Ethernet ports. If you have the luxury you could move teh hub next to the iMac DV and connect it with the supplied Ethernet Cable.
Option 2. Ethernet over mains. Not wireless, but uses your home mains wiring to transfer data (at 85Mbps it's much faster than Airport) so you won't have wires trailing around the home.
Option 3. Wireless Ethernet Bridge these are widely available and convert and Ethernet connection to a WiFi/Airport one.
Option 4. USB based adaptors are limited to 12Mbps (USB1.1 speed) and have generally poor support on the Mac.
Option 5. Airport cards are regularly available (with the required iMac DV adaptors) on eBay.co.uk but they demand a high price.
    Hope that helps.

  • We are getting ready to purchase the new iMac 27" and would like to know which is best for watching streaming video, the fusion drive or the more expensive flash drive only

We are getting ready to purchase the new imac 27" and would like to know which is the best configuration for watching streaming video, the fusion drive or the more expensive flash drive.  We will have a fast fiberoptic internet connection.

the harddisk speed mean nothing when it comes to streaming video from the internet
even the fastests internet using fiberoptics is still much slower then the slowests harddisk you can buy

  • I have a new iMac 27 and a new Blu Ray external drive.

I have a new iMac 27 and a new Blu Ray external drive. What is the best way to burn a BluRay disk? I read about TOAST etc but they are getting bad reviews. What software is the best? Im running mountain lion of course. Anyone know of good software to burn this type of disk that ACTUALLY works?

    Okay, a couple of things:
I still use (mostly) an old version of iMovie because it was/is the only version which will process footage losslessly. However, the newer versions are okay - just do not use the automatic share option, but use  the export to quicktime option where you have many options as to quality, size, etc:
You will wind up with a .mov file you can drag into Toast to burn (or iDVD to add menus and burn). If in iDVD, you can either burn directly (but not bluray) or make a VIDEO_TS folder which can be dragged into Toast - I also use that if I want to keep a copy to burn later as it has all the necessary files so you can ditch or archive all your clips, etc.

  • Firefox is about 80 percent downloaded onto my new iMac computer and will not finish.

I have a new iMac computer and tried to download Firefox. It downloaded about 80 percent and stopped. what should i do?

Are you updating or downloading the full version?
If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the disk image (dmg) file to the desktop
    * Firefox 7.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
    * Install the new version that you have downloaded

  • New iMac suitable for FCP and/or Avid?

    Hi all,
I'm a digital filmmaking student currently using FCP on my MBP (whilst minding my Ps and Qs, OK? LOL).
Next month we'll be learning Avid - no idea if I'll end up buying a copy of that, but it's quite possible.
I'm planning on buying a 24" iMac to also use for video editing, and most likely some music production using Logic Express as well.
I know the iMacs aren't considered "Pro" machines, but I really don't want a Mac Pro (for reasons of space, $$$, etc.).
I don't mind having to wait a bit longer for rendering, etc., but are there any other drawbacks to getting an iMac for this purpose? i.e. issues with the video card or anything...
Also, considering how I'll be using it, would it be worth the extra $500 to get the 2.8 GHz processor? Will there be a very noticeable difference?
    TIA for your opinions-
    -Dennis

Any of the new iMacs would be fine for FCP or Avid. FCP ran fine on Core Duo machines with a lot less horsepower than the new iMac. Nobody knows how much more powerful the new Core2Extreme is than the 2.4GHz Core2Duo in the base 24" configuration, because Intel hasn't made it generally available yet. If I were you, I'd buy the regular 24" iMac and buy some third party RAM to upgrade to 4GB (should set you back under $200), and get a large external Firewire/USB2 hard drive or two.

  • Brand new imac Retina and can't enter Apple Diagnostics.  Doing it wrong?

I've had various issues with my brand new imac retina.  I've spoken with Apple Care about two of them (Finder icon issue; slow shut down) and we're working through it all trying to figure out if it's software and whether the current beta update will solve the problem when it comes out.  They've extended their 14 day exchange to 60 days for me while we sort it out.
All said, one thing they suggested was to run the Apple Diagnostics by holding down D upon booting.  I've tried running this, it comes to a screen wanting me to pick the language, and nothing happens.  It's like it doesn't do anything upon picking the language, just sits there.
The Sr. Tech I was talking with just said "that's strange" but with other things we were discussing he went about focusing on the other things.
I may try yet another separate call to discuss this with them but I thought I'd check here to see if anyone has encountered/solved this issue, see if I'm going about it the wrong way.
I'm holding down D and I'm connected by ethernet.  This is the new imac retina 5k, 2014.
    Thanks.

That's might nice of Apple.  Personally, I would not be sorting anything out on a brand new Mac.  I would be demanding a brand new replacement.  One that is suppose to work rigiht out the  box.

The techs wanted you to run Apple's Hardware Test.  See KB Article:  Using Apple Hardware Test - Apple Support

  • HDD vs SSD for new MacBook Pro and FCP editing performance

I will be purchasing a new MacBook Pro and I'm curious about performance as it relates to large FCP projects. I'm looking to hear from folks who can help me determine if a solid state drive (SSD) would be worth the extra cost. I edit large FCP projects and I'm curious if using a SSD would be the way to go. Will I get better editing performance with a SSD as opposed to the 7200 RPM HDD?
    Thanks!

As a boot drive, SSDs have exceedingly last fast access times, and great data throughput rates. My Crucial SSD has a write read of about 200 MB/s. I can boot in under four seconds, and access apps, and web sites pretty **** fast.
However, beyond this, I don't see any real, substantial or dramatic gains in editing performance at all as a boot drive. I'd save your money on get more RAM, and best CPU and GPU you can afford.

  • I purchased Photoshop Elements 12 online from Adobe and was downloaded on old Macbook laptop.  Now have new iMac desktop and want Elements 12 moved to this computer.  Have serial number.  How do I move application from one to the other?  Thanks for your h

I'd like to know how I can move Elements 12 from an old Mac laptop to a new iMac desktop.

you can migrate your catalog (Use Backup, Restore to move catalog | Organizer | Elements 6 or later), but do not move pse; properly install it using the installation files.

  • New iMac 27" and cannot get it to mount a new LaCie thunderbolt drive. Any suggestions?

My new iMac 27" finally arrived and seemed to be working fine, until today when I received, from Apple Store, a LaCie d2, 3TB drive. Connected the Thunderbolt cables and powered it up. Rapidly flashing blue light on the drive but it does not mount on the desktop and does not show in the system report. Could be a bad drive or.........
    All help appreciated.

Can you see the drive in the System Report or Disk Utility?
One thing I read was that you need to do is to shut down, and unplug everything, your iMac, the Thunderbolt drive, everything. Then reconnect, and start up the iMac. Seems to cure everything.
If not, return the drive to the Apple store, and see if that fixes it. If that doesn't fix it, then return the iMac within the 14 day no questions asked return period and get a new one. You'll have to move fast.

  • New imac i7 and firewire

    hi
iv actually started thinking about getting a new imac i7 quad over the mac pro quad but im finding it hard to get my head around the 1 firewire port.
could some one please tell me how to work with an imac + and apogee duet and an external firewire hard drive together as well as any pro ( i doubt ) and cons. maybe a firewire 800 hub?? is that posable?
Also, could enlighten me as to why apple would make such a machine with only 1 fire wire port???
seems a bit mum and dad to me.

    thanks for your reply.
my problem is that the apogee duet only has 1 fire wire so from what i understand it cant be daisy chained. i think id need a hub but i have no experience and knowledge of either of the 2.
maybe il have to go ensemble instead. ????$$$$
im possibly going for the i7. i thought that was the only quad actually... i need to re-check. i was going to go a mac pro quad and i know that is still the better computer but the cost for me is a lot.
there are things i dont like about the imac such as only 1 FW and only 1 hard drive. 2T is great but it would be great if it was 2 1T HD's.
to me, if it had 2 Fw it would be sold.
so in the end i still may wait til the next generation come out and see or maybe still go mac pro.
