New iMac in Office - Rest of Computers Now Drop Network

Greetings -
I've used a Mac for about three years now and for the last 6 months I've been working in a small office that was otherwise all windows computers. We've got a Netgear Rangemax NEXT wireless router (WNDR3300) in the office. It broadcasts two separate wireless frequencies, N and G. So, we have two SSID's "Office-G" and Office-N". We've never had problems with this set up. We've all got 802.11g machines.
We recently put a new iMac into our office for some dual-use functions. We're using the Mac side of things for a lot of media work, and our part-time admin is using Windows XP via Boot Camp for her work.
However, ever since we've gotten the iMac (and starting on the day we put it in here) we've had problems where all the other machines frequently drop their wireless connections entirely. For a brief moment trying to reconnect causes a "connection failed" notice. This even happens on my iPod Touch. The network drops and we get errors trying to reconnect. We wait about a minute or two and then are able to reconnect.
I've set both Mac OS and WinXP on the iMac to connect only to the "Office-G" SSID and not the "Office-N." That seems to have not helped the problem.
I'm no novice when it comes to small networks like this. I've set up plenty, and another guy at the office knows a good deal about networking too. However, I'm feeling a little stumped as to why this would happen. Can anyone offer any suggestions? I've reset the router already and checked other settings to see if there is a conflict, but it seems to be all in order. So, again, any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks so much!

N and G are wireless protocols, not frequencies. Looking through Netgear's documentation seems to indicate that you can run this router in a type 2 configuration - 5GHz - N and 2.4GHz b/g modes.
I think I would remove one of the SSIDs and change the router to operate in that type 2 configuration. Your Mac, assuming it is fairly new, should be able to run fine on the 5GHz frequency with the N protocol. The Airport card that works in this dual band mode is the Airport Extreme. Check Apple > About this Mac > More info > network.
Your PCs can use the G protocol, and your Mac the N.
The network going to "sleep" for a few minuets doesn't sound good at all. I've had problems with Netgear routers doing this as well. I ended up replacing one recently that was 9 months old. You might want to look at a different manufacturer.

  • I just installed iLife on my new Imac version 10.8.2 and now I can't open my iPhoto app.  It says that I Photo is damaged or incomplete.  What do I do to restore my iPhoto and pictures!

I just installed iLife on my new iMac 10.8.2 version and now I can't open my iPhoto app.  It says it is damaged or incomplete.  What can I do to get it back along with all of my picutures?  I was told by an Apple employee at my one to one training that it was OK to install iLife to get the iDVD that I wanted. Help!

I have installed iLife a few times and because of photostream, the version on the disc must be updated.  Software update usually takes care of it.  It sounds like you installed an old version over a new version.  I've not tried that.
You have a late 2012 machine, if you open the Mac app store from the dock, you should be able to go to the purchased tab and download/install the right version of iphoto.  Honestly, you should not have used that disc on this new of mac or at least only installed iDVD & iWeb but not garageband, iphoto, and iMovie.
If the Mac App Store shows iphoto as installed already, drag the app from your applications folder to the trash and reinstall it again from the Mac App Store.  That is the version you need.  You may find garageband and imovie have similar problems.
    good luck.
PS.  your photos are in your photo folder in your home folder.  don't touch those, I'm talking about the app "iphoto" in the applications folder.

I've set up a new iMac and transferred my library.  Now, when I switch on iTunes Match it gets to about 25% on stage 1 and just stops working,  Anyone know how to fix this?

Ok, so the likely cause is 1 or more Songs are tripping up iTunes Match.  To resolve, move to Song view, switch on iCloud Status and iCloud Download fields - sort the view on iCloud Status - identify Songs with status other than Purchased, Matched or Uploaded.  Temporarily remove them from the library, allow iTunes Match to complete the 3-step process.  Gradually import the Songs back in - any that cause a repeat failure, place in a playlist, burn to audio CD and import as 256k AAC.
Note:  iTunes Match service in UK at present is intermittant, may be worth trying from 1200 tomorrow to give Apple the chance to complete its current updates.

  • Gaming on new iMac. / Office 2007 files on Mac.

    1)
My brother plays a lot of games and is currently using a N-Vidia GeForce 512MB Graphics Card.
I want to get him the new iMac because his current PC is too outdated (yeah it runs windows, lol). I was wondering whether there is anyway of getting a 512mb or 1gb graphics card into the new iMac?
    2)
Does anyone know how I can open docx files or any other Office 2007 files on Microsoft Office for Mac 2004. I haven't been able to find anything anywhere.
    Thanks.

  • Got a new iMac, best way to transfer files/set up network?

I just got a new iMac. I have a MBP from which I would like to transfer all contents on to the iMac. I do have the MBP backing onto a Time Machine and I'm wondering if that could be used to easily transfer the latest backup version to the new computer? How would I do that and would this transfer ALL of the MBP's content or would I still have to install my programs like iWork from the install disks?
Also, I will be keeping the MBP as a secondary computer, would there be a way to easily connect the two computers so they could synch files wirelessly? I also have one more laptop running Windows7 in the house that I would love to get on the wireless network. Right now we only have it connected to the TimeMachine for internet, but being able to easily share files would be helpful.
    Thanks

You can find the answers to those questions in Mac Help. Mac Help is located in the Help menu of the Finder. If you click Index in the upper right of the Mac Help window you can look up just about any topic for Mac OS X Snow Leopard.
You first question will have answers under Migration and the second under Network. There are answers with step-by-step instructions, not only for Macs but PCs with Windows as well.

  • New iMac -- Do I need to create a wired network connection?

I'm new to Macs so please bear with me. My new iMac is arriving in a few days, and I'm reading through the manual just to get a leg up for when it gets here. Page 11 of the user's guide explains how to set up an Ethernet connection, but the manual does not say anything about setting up a wireless network connection during initial setup. Will I be able to do that or will I need to create an Ethernet connection first, then set up the wireless?

The setup for wireless is the same. Open Network prefs, select the Airport port, click on Configure button. Check the box to show status in the menubar, then click on Advanced button and click on the TCP/IP tab. All you need to do is set the Configure IPv4 option for the Airport port to DHCP and then click on the Apply button.

  • New iMacs = Junk? First the freezing, now Superdrive is toast.

Anyone not living in a cave has experienced, or at least knows about, this.

Now, the "Super" (sic) Drive in my iMac has gone insane. Inserting perfectly good CDs and DVDs results in several minutes of grinding, followed by the disc being spit out. These same discs work just fine on my 4-year-old G4 iMac, which I'm having to rely upon more and more lately!
Apple, you're about to lose me as a customer. $500 PCs are more reliable than this.

    Greetings,
I have ten each of the 20" and 24" New Aluminum iMacs, have had for a couple of months, and they have been rock solid. They have gotten all of the updates available and are all still OK. The only big time game we allow is WoW and it works fine. We use Parallels and have Vista loaded to cover our one "Windows Only" propietary program that we must have for a few more months.
I personally do not have an Aluminum model, but my 17" and 20" White plastic models are still great machines. I will replace one of them (17") later on next year. The school has the ones (20) that I mentioned earlier.
I have to work with all platforms, but my favorite and most reliable has always been the Macs, clear back 20 or so years. I have had much more trouble with PeeCees - always have. I've been using Macs and PeeCees for about the same length of time.
Don't worry, you would do well to switch to the mac platform - less that 1% of the machines ever post here for any given model of machine and it's usually much less than that.
Games, and other software, but especially games, usually cause most of a computers issues, for any platform, so it's usually up to the game manufacturers to resolve this. If Apple has a known flaw, they will fix it as soon as they can, and always have. As far as software, of any kind goes, it's up to the software folks to make it work with the computer, not the other way around.
Mac is cool - enjoy it if you make the plunge.
    Cheers,
    M.

  • New iMac- installed Office 2011, default font troubles

A friend just purchased a 25" iMac. All is well, until I install MS Office 2011. I haven't seen this, but she reports font problems (foreign language defaults or file import gibberish, I don't now). Is this a common complaint. The OS is Mavericks.

The font conflicts came from the installation of Office 2011. It installs a handful of old, OS 9 style TrueType fonts that conflict with the newer OpenType fonts installed by OS X. While you already did use Font Book to resolve the conflicts (it turned one or the other off), you should remove the offending older fonts from the drive.
Remove the following Mac legacy TrueType suitcase fonts from the /Library/Fonts/Microsoft/ folder:
    Andale Mono
    Arial Black
    Arial Narrow
    Arial Rounded Bold
    Comic Sans MS
    Georgia
    Impact
    Tahoma
    Trebuchet MS
Note that the older fonts do not have a file extension, such as .ttf . Font Book doesn't like it when you manually remove fonts from the drive. So after getting rid of the old fonts, do the following to reset Font Book's database.
Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Shift key when you hear the startup chime to boot into Safe Mode. Keep holding the Shift key until you see a progress bar towards the bottom of the screen. You can let go of the Shift key at that point. Yosemite is a bit different. Whether it's a Safe Mode boot or a normal one, you get the same progress bar. It just takes longer to get to the desktop in Safe Mode. So hold the Shift key until you get to the desktop.
OS X asks you to log in (you will get this screen on a Safe Mode boot even if your Mac is set to automatically log in). Let the Mac finish booting to the desktop and then restart normally. This will clear Font Book's database and the cache files of the user account you logged into in Safe Mode.
All in all, since the conflicts have already been resolved, you don't have to do any of this. But Font Book doesn't tell you which version of a conflicting font it disabled. For all the user knows, the much older fonts could be the active ones, and many newer apps don't work well with non Unicode fonts.

  • I am getting ready to purchase a new iMac. If I get it now will I have to purchase OS X Mavericks when it releases this fall?

I am hesitant to purchase a new computer now if in a couple months a major OS upgrade comes out and I have to pay for that too.

Unlike Windows, OSX upgrades are cheap ($19.95 vs. typically
$149 to $199 for Windows).  So, the descision to buy the computer
should only be based on the need for a new computer.
With that said however, with Intel's release of the new Haswell
chips, it is possible the iMac itself may get upgraded with the
new silicon.  When that may happen is anyones guess and
only the people inside Apple know that and they certainly will
not tell anyone before the release date.
Bottom line, if you need (must/have to) get a computer now, get it.

  • Just bought a new imac with OS 10.10.2- now I have a problem. Cant' use my printer (Epson Stylus 1280, or my tablet Intuos 3, or my scanner Epson Perfection 3200- can't get new drivers and can't afford to replace with new.

Trying to find an affordable answer. My Epson stylus photo 1280 printer is not compatible with Yosemite, neither is my Intuos 3 tablet or my Epson perfection 3200 photo scanner. I need to find second hand options.
What are the options without buying all new everything? What models and drivers are available that are compatible with Yosemite OS 10.10.2?

I know I have to give up on the printer and scanner- but I am going to try to find something to keep my tablet going for awhile.
Are you actually reading the responses that people are giving you?
    1. Your printer will work with Gutenprint support, possibly will work with 10.9 drivers.
    2. Epson has a scanner Yosemite driver for your scanner.
    3. And Wacom has a driver for your tablet.
You have no reason to be that miserable, all things considered.

  • Can't see my new iMac on my PC's thru my wireless network.

I can see both pc laptops on my iMac and the laptops can see each other.
But. I can't see the iMac on my pc laptops.
I would like to share ALL files and folders not just my public file.
Any help would be appreciated, I've been working at it for 2.5hours.
    Thanks, Jean

Yeah, you will have to obtain the mac's IP address on the local network in System Preferences>Sharing, and 'hard enter' that in to the PC side's Network Neighborhood depending on your OS. One thing to keep in mind is susceptibility to intruders/viruses whenever you open up and share, say 'everything' as you said. Just throwing bit of caution. Lots of variables here..

Please give me you thoughts on what I should do!!  Thanks  lot!

The new iMac is about 25% or so faster than your current iMac(comparable model would be the 3.1ghz version). There are a couple of things that you will benefit from such as the dual Thunderbolt/Mini Display ports/ which may help with multitasking. The video card in the new iMac again the comparable model being the 3.1ghz is a lotttttttt better than the current one that you have. So thinking of the long run those few things may be beneficial for you to upgrade(but it depends on what is important to you).
I had the 2.93ghz i7 version that I just bought in March this year and I turned around and sold it about a week before the new iMac's were announced. I got about $1600 for it, yeah I took a loss but to me it was worth it because my new iMac performs that much better. Now keep in mind I went from i7 to i7...3.4ghz i7 with the 2gb video card. Now I have dual thuderbolt/mini display ports. I have noticed significant gains in my video editing and also in my gaming. So to me it was definitely worth the upgrade!
One last thing, I would not have sold my 2.93 i7 and then bought the 3.1ghz i5, the big reason is because HT(hyper threading), it's only on the i7 model(3.4ghz)... If you take a look at some of the bench marks on engadget, maclife, macrumors, macworld, ****Barefeats.com(they really get into benchmarking)*** you will see charts that will help you make a better decision.
In closing I would say look into it, if you can get a good price out of your current iMac to put toward a new iMac then do it. Like others have mentioned to you, tech changes and Apple will change the tech in these machines next year or do a speed bump later this year or so. One last thing if you go from the 2.8 i5 up to the 3.4 i7, you would definitely see the difference (HT is a must especially for programs that utilize it. You can go to my youtube channel(mob1278) and take a look at my geekbench results.... my 2.93 i7 scored around 10500-11000(8gb ram)...my 3.4 i7 scores from 12700-13000 with 4gb ram....so yeah as you can see big difference. Basically the 3.4 i7 would perform similar or just under a 2.4ghz 8core 2010 Mac Pro which runs you about $3500 with no monitor.... it's your money spend it how you want....and Lion is only going to push it even more when it is released!

  • How to transfer Itunes library from Windows XP to new Imac?

I have just purchased a new Imac and want to transfer my Itunes library from my Windows XP pc to new Imac. I have both computers on an Airport wireless home network. If this proves to be difficult, can I use a jump drive? Thanks
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I just got a shiny new Mac, and don't want to lose my music library!
No need! iTunes for Windows is almost exactly identical to iTunes for Mac, and switching over is actually very easy.
First thing you're going to have to do is figure out a data route. Although you can technically use CDs or DVDs, in order to best transfer all data, including playlists and ratings, you'll want another method.
If you have a network set up, you're good to go.
An external hard drive will work as well, just remember that Windows won't read a Mac formatted disk. The iPod is also an external hard drive, and can be used in the same way.
    <hr>
Once you have the method set up, you're going to have to prepare iTunes.
Open iTunes for Windows, and hit Edit>Preferences>Advanced, and make sure that the folder listed is \My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music.
Next, hit Consolidate Music Library. This action is irreversible, and it will make sure that all of your music is put in the aforementioned 'iTunes Music' folder. Shut iTunes, and move on.
Now you're going to have to move the info to the Mac. If you have an external hard drive, drag the iTunes folder, located within My Documents\My Music onto it. If you have a network set up, copy the iTunes folder to a location that can be accessed by the Mac.
Now, on the Mac, open either the external HDD, or the network folder, and copy the folder iTunes to the Home/Music folder.
Start up iTunes on the Mac, and everything should be in place.
    Cleaning up
If you have music purchased from the iTunes Music Store, you're going to have to authorize your Mac. If you're not going to be using your Windows machine for iTMS songs anymore, you may want to deauthorize it. Either way, this article has all of the information you need: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93014
If you're not going to be using the Windows machine for music, you can safely delete the music from it, as it is now on the Mac. However, unless it is actually bothering you there, there's no reason to do so. Redundancy is great for data.
    About an iPod:
First, Apple has a doc about using the iPod to switch. It has some great info about moving your documents, emails, etc. However, the method of music transfer there doesn't save most of your library data.
Second, you may want to reformat your iPod for the Mac. The advantage, basically, is some transfer speed. The disadvantage is Windows' inability to read Mac disks without 3rd party software. Either way, the doc on formatting (restoring) is here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983#One
That's it! Your music collection should be up and running in iTunes for Mac. A couple of places to check out, both showing the 'extras' of the Mac version of iTunes vs. Windows:

  • Installing iWork 08 on new iMac - white on white

    Hi,
yesterday my new iMac arrived and I spend till now to install all the programs. All works fine, VMWare Fusion, Master Collection, Microsoft Office. I installed the iWork08 I used on the "old" iMac. With success. But when I open numbers or pages, I get a white paper with invisible characters. If I change to a very light blue I can read what I wrote. When I mark the text I can read it too. In numbers there are no borders etc. visible. Where is the problem??
    Thanls for any help.
    Christian

Given the difference of price, is it surprising that iWork doesn't embed a sophisticated code to check updates.
I'm not remembering the exact behavior of iWork '08 (there is no iWorks product) but I know that you are installing a product which is dead since january 2009. Don't be surprised that it doesn't adjust automatically to an operating system which wasn't available when it was designed.
iWork '09 contains a piece of code dedicated to update search but it doesn't apply in the first seconds after installation. And for sure, it's unaware of 10.6.8 or 10.7 which didn't existed when it was designed so it will not behave correctly.

My place of employment has set me up on their vpn using "connectra". I used this for the first time (successfully) on my old iMac. It was using os 10.5.7. I bought a new iMac using 10.5.8 and now I cannot log on using the vpn. I am only able to use Firefox to log on to their vpn and it keeps giving me an error the page https://connectra.... Failed to apply assigned office mode IP data. Any ideas? Is it my new computer? I don't understand why my other iMac can access it, but my new mac can't. HELP!

WTH? Optical S/PDIF input works absolutely fine, but Coaxial refuses to work in every attempt I've made. I even wen't as far as buying another Coaxial S/PDIF cable making sure that the cable has the proper 75-Ohm resistance... I'm far passed confused at this point. I've already returned my first X-Fi platinum and I'm having the exact same issues on this one. So I'm ruling out the possibility of a bad I/O dri've.
I'm looking for a response from somebody who actually is employed by creative to help me with a solution to this. As it's obvious no one thus far has an idea as to why it isn't working.
Is this just a software issue? Or is it a hardware issue? Also, I'd like to know what the point of the JP2 jumper on the actual X-Fi card? Would that help me sort this issue out or no? Please help.
