New iMac+Leopard+deadline=what should I do?

Hi, all--This is my first post so please forgive any inadvertent forum no-nos.
I very much enjoy my now antiquated G3 Mac--it still does just about everything I require, but circumstances are forcing me to upgrade. I've decided upon a souped-up 17" iMac (desk space is a major concern--otherwise I'd go for a bigger model), but I'm not sure when I should make my purchase. The deadline I'm facing is a strange one: As many (most?) Mac users know, eBay is not necessarily a friendly environment for us. Nonetheless, as a longtime seller on that venue, I've experienced few problems with my current Mac. All of this will change, however, when eBay switches over to the long-threatened SYI3 form in early May. I will be DOA since my browsers are not supported and I can't upgrade the browsers since I can't upgrade the OS. Using SYI3, even with a supposedly supported browser/OS, is problematic at best, but I'll also have the option of using a third-party host that suports OS X.
Now that I've selected the Mac I want to purchase, I discover Leopard is forthcoming. That's great! Truly. I need, for the first time in ages, to be totally current and, mebbe, just a wee bit ahead of the pack!
I'd appreciate it very much if the forum's experts can give me some pros/cons to buying now with Tiger vs. waiting for the as yet un-announced Leopard arrival. I want as little downtime as possible during what may be the not-so-merry month of May.
TIA,
the bookwoman

bookwomanor, (Great nom-de-plume!)
How much RAM do you have in that G3, and what model is it? Though you do not say it explicitly, I have concluded that cost is an important consideration. With that in mind, some comments:
1. Many G3's will run OS X 10.3, and those that do not can be tweaked with XPostFacto to do so.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106163
So what exactly is the G3 you have, and how much RAM does it have?
2. Any new Mac you buy will come with the current OS, or a free upgrade to it. It will not give you the next OS, even if the release date is just days after the date of your purchase.
3. If you buy a new Mac now you will pay - if curent Apple policy remains the same - the full retail price for the next OS.
4. You can buy Tiger at any time. You cannot buy Leopard until it is released.
If I were you, and you have to get the brand new computer, I would wait as long as possible. With any luck, Apple's planned release date Coming spring 2007 will precede eBay's transition.

  • Just bought a new iMac G5 (iSight) - what should I test/watch out for?

    Hi all,
I'm not a new Mac user, but I did just buy a brand new iMac G5 (too many new/untested things going on with the Intel Duo thingy). And I'd like some suggestions from anyone who is willing.
I've been reading a lot about the noisy fan and dead pixels problems. Besides testing for those two "major" problems, are there any other things I should test out before the return period expires?
So far, after taking 15 minutes to set up and get online (I love how Apple makes it so easy!), I'm liking the machine, a lot! I just turned Processor Performance to Highest to test out the heat/fan issue.
Thank you all for any suggestions. I'm trying to benefit from the collective experience and perhaps avoid any pitfalls before day 14 strikes.

Hi, thanks for the suggestions so far!
I opted for the wired keyboard and mouse, knowing that I didn't want to deal with swapping out batteries and such. It's been fine so far ... if I really miss the convenience of wireless, I'll purchase them afterwards.
Currently, I have the default hardware: 250 GB HD, 512 MB RAM. I have an external firewire hard drive that I'll be using. And I figured that purchasing the 3rd party RAM will be cheaper than buying the ones from the Apple Retail/Online.
As for the processor, I'm trying to see if the fan will kick in after a day or two of operating at Highest. I haven't really ran it through rigorously yet. I'll probably set it back to Auto after a while.
Did you all experience any weird "hangs" or unresponsiveness? I had created a second account, and when I was transferring files between the internal and external hard drive, and using iPhoto on the second account, it froze up for 3 minutes, went back to normal, and then froze up again.
I had to just log out of the 2nd account, and let the copying complete. Maybe I need more RAM, since I'm so used to doing a bunch of tasks at once.
So please let me know if anyone else has any other suggestions. Thanks again!
Oh, and at first, I was so gosh darn disappointed that the built-in iSight couldn't be used with anything else accept iChat, and Photobooth! But then I did the updates to 10.4.4, and lo-and-behold now it's working within iMovie. Yeh!

In general most macs you buy are the same. If you will be doing quite a lot of editing of photos and videos, then the big things to look for are:
Processor - 2.8ish GHz Intel i7 4-core - is about the best I have head of thus far.
RAM - fairly easy to upgrade yourself, but 16GB is typically more than you will need for the next 5 years at least.
iLife is reasonably good software for editing media, but as a photographer, you may have your own prefered software
The good thing about Apple is that they don't sell ****** computers in general. They offer little in the way of customization of hardware which is both their strength and weakness.

I am trying to get my system current.  I am now running Mac OS X, version 10.6.8 (I believe this is "Snow Leopard").  What should I upgrade to?

The current system is OS X 10.8 which is downloadable from the App store, which you can upgrade to directly if your system meets the system requirements.  Note that starting with OS X 10.7, PowerPC-based programs will no longer run. So, for example, people with Office 2004 got surprised when they upgraded and found that the older Office programs would no longer run. Newer Office programs are OK.

What is the best method to remove personal data from the 24" iMac?

Use setup assistant which is offered when you setup your new Mac.  It will transfer information from a Time Machine backup, Clone or another Mac.
It's best to do this during setup to avoid issues with duplicate IDs.

  • Importing photos to new imac leopard os (canon jpeg) trouble!

I am unable to import any photos to my new imac leopard os. I have tried using flash jumpdrives, CD's, DVD's, different brands of CF cards/readers. I have tried using images from all 3 of my canon cameras (rebel xt, 20D, 40D). The photos appear as if they are uploading, then when the system states finishing upload at end, the iphoto system closes down. I have taken the machine to my local apple store & the techs are unable to figure out the problem (they have updated all software & reinstalled it. They state it is not a hard drive problem) They were also unable to upload any of my jpegs to their leopard systems. I do not have this problem with my macbook pro laptop tiger os or my dell pc. Anyone know how to fix this!

    Photo Rock Girl
Welcome to the Apple user discussion forums
How are you trying to import? To iPhoto? Using Image capture? using a memory card reader? mounting your camera in the finder?
you mention many different media - flash jumpdrives, CD's, DVD's, different brands of CF cards/readers - how did you get your photos from your camera to a CD and a DVD?
If you can not read photos from any of these it is very strange. Can you download photos from the internet?

  • New imac & Leopard

What, if any is Apples policy if you purchase a new imac today and then Leopard is announced

    SSR Frantic,
If you are waiting to buy a machine until Leopard is announced, note, you may also have to wait until well after Leopard is released for all your software to catch in Leopard compatibility. If you buy now, it is pretty well known what is Tiger compatible on Intel Macs, and what is not. Given Leopard hasn't been released, any new features which are not in the current developer release might break something unkown to developers yet. It has been true of every Mac since the beginning, they could only run the current operating system and newer ones up till their hardware couldn't handle what was in the operating system. That means you could be stuck with a Leopard only machine if you buy at or after Leopard's release. So consider that possibility in your purchase. Of course no one here is privy to know of any chance that Apple might change that consistant design limit.
Whatever you do, backup your data before you upgrade. See my FAQ*:

  • My new iMac are slow, what is wrong?

Hi, I just got a new iMac 21.5 tum for christmas. My parents got a MacBook Pro and it feels like their Macbook Pro are faster than my iMac. My iMac takes forever to load and start some programs and sometimes and when I play Minecraft for example and I got skype running in the background I usually have 58-62 fps and when Skype says ''Fred came online'' (or any skype notification) I get framedrops and I get around 19 fps for a few seconds. And my games and programs crash often, like when I tried to upload a video I made with iMovie to youtube, iMove crashed. And when I started the game World of Warcraft in fullscreen the screen got black for 50 seconds and then the game started. And when I try to record a gameplay with QuickTime Player its lagging alot, my friend got a iMac 21.5 tum too and he not none of theese problems and its not lagging for him when he's recording with QuickTime Player. Is it something wrong with my computer or is it just a teribly bad computer for gaming and is it like this for everyone?
    Some info:
Processor: 2,7 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory: 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB
    Software: Mac OS X 10.7.2 Lion (11C74)
Sorry for my bad english! :/

Since it's new you should call AppleCare and let them walk you through troubleshooting. BTW, what is "tum?"

  • For a new imac how much ram should i get?

If I buy a new iMac, I see that one can get it with 16GB or even 32GB RAM.  dMy 2007 iMac has 4 GB now after I upgraded?  What would the difference be?

    My 10 cents worth:
The minimum configurable amount of memory of a new iMac is 8Gb But...
If you are looking at a new upgradable iMac, absolute do NOT buy the Apple RAM upgrades at the time of purchase. It is grossly overpriced, and although good quality and reliable (I've been led to believe) you can buy just as good, if not better for a lot less. I wouldn't look further than OWC (http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple/memory/) or Crucial (http://www.crucial.com/). Both offer matched pairs and kits that are guaranteed to work with your iMac and as you will see, cost a lot less than Apple. Don't be fooled by the price, they supply good quality, fast memory.
Secondly, in terms of how much RAM, the question is, what is your budget? I always believe that if you can afford it (and memory nowadays isn't that expensive) max out your system and then forget about it because:
    a) There's a fair chance that you'll be upgrading it again at some point if you don't max it out.
    b) You are releasing the maximum potential of your iMac (in terms of memory performance, although the jump from 16Gb to 32Gb will not be as significant as the jump from 8Gb to 16Gb))
    c) If you sell it, the extra RAM will be an attractive option for any buyer.

  • What is bonjour? Is it an app and where can I find it on my new iMac?? what are its uses?

Someone told me that I might be able to chat among Mac computers and I thought it was with Bonjour...is this correct?
Don't see it anywhere on my new iMac?
    Thanks!
New to apple computers...any help is appreciated!

    Hey mmanno,
Great question. The following resource provides the information you are seeking:
OS X Mountain Lion: What is Bonjour?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11449
Bonjour is a networking technology developed by Apple Inc. that makes it easy to set up and use devices and services on a network. Because Bonjour-compatible devices and services advertise their availability, it’s easy for you (or an application or service) to find devices and services that you want to use. For example, if you turn on file sharing, other OS X users on your local network will see your computer when they browse.
For information on using Bonjour to send messages to others on your local network, see this article:
Messages (Mountain Lion): Send messages to people on your local network
