New iMac/Lion

I am thinking about getting the new iMac that just came out (May 2011). Being that Apple will be coming out with the new OS (Lion) "this summer", should I wait for that or purchase now?

That's entirely up to you. No one knows for sure when Lion will be released, but if it is released a few weeks after you buy your iMac, you will be sent a free update by Apple.

Migration Assistant Problems iMac/Leopard to Brand New iMac/Lion

Ok, I have scoured the discussions over this issue, done permissions repair/verify on both systems, all software is updated, etc. I'm at a loss.
I just purchased a new iMac 27" quad core... all I want to do is transfer my files using migration assistant. I have read there are many who are having issues with this...I have been trying since thursday night! I've called apple twice, nothing they advise seems to be working. I am trying to transfer using eithernet, and while I have an firewire cord it's not the correct type (it works on my old 20" iMac - running 10.5.8), so right now that is what it is. It gets to the end, and the time starts creeping back up again... I was down to 10 mins and it went back up to 3 hours+ and this was after me attempting to do the migration for 12+ hrs overnight. I also have a macbook and I am encountering the SAME issues while it's transfering the applications folder/info. It was down to 9 mins and then climbed back up to 2hrs & 15mins... and still climbing. This attempt started over 3 hours ago. The macbook has way less applications installed so I am forseeing that this is not a good sign.
Aside from trying to manually reinstall EVERYTHING, (ARGH!!!) do I have ANY other options? (or what peice of equipment do I need to drop-kick? lol)

Sorry to be grouchy but you ignored the best opportunity to migrate when you initially turned on your new Mac. When you start up a new Mac it starts Setup Assistant, one of the steps asks if you want migrate from another Mac. In your case you must have chosen no and are now using Migration Assistant. MA and SA are basically the same tool however MA will create a new user account whereas SA will not. As for the connection that is easily solved by getting the correct FireWire cable. You need one like this one from Amazon. You can find these at any computer store, Best Buy, Walmart, Radio Shack or of course Amazon.
My suggestion to you once you get the right cable is to start over. How you do that is by following the suggestions in Lion Setup Assistant tips, this is a helpful guide prepared by Pondini who is one of the more generous posters on this site. Begin where he talks about Second Chance......

Keyboard included with my new iMac (Lion) won't work properly in Snow Leopard.

I have a keyboard that came with a 2011 iMac that came preinstalled with Lion.
The Key shortcuts are for mission control/launchpad.
I tried using it on my old 27" iMac that has Snow Leopard, and the top row shortcut keys are all messed up.
The new iMac is running 10.6.8, fully updated.

Sounds like third party software conflict.
Does this behavior persist in Safe Mode?

Transfering files and folders from an external hard drive to my new iMac Lion

I recently bought an iMac Lion and today attempted to transfer applications folders and files from my old computer( tiger) using migration assistant.I was though only partially succesful in as much as my applications and office files were copied, but not so iTunes, iPhoto and iMovies content .I then decided to attempt transfering the files and folders using my external hard disc(La Cie).I have activated Time machine and can certainly see the two partitions i had originally set up in my old computer but cannot figure out how I can the User Files which contain the media i want.? I originally used Super Duper to do my backups but its not recognised on this new computer so i am inclined to think I need to re buy it

Multi-issues iMac G5 to new iMac Lion

Yesterday I opted for Migration Assistant as a sane method to transfer files ffrom my iMac G5 PPC to my new iMac. I followed the instructions on Apple's support site and supplemented with info from other sites. The process took twice as long as had been projected, transferred all or most of the Power PC only apps and NONE of the other files - no music, photos, documents, etc. [iTunes, iPhoto, etc.] I then attempted File Sharing. Now I have two profiles on the new iMac, one specific to it with none of the files I need and one based on the old G5 with the files. I would like to have only one "me" on the new iMac, I'd like to have the files on it, especially passwords & usernames and emails. My universal applications are in the G5 profile but now are all trials and I really don't want to repurchase them.
While using MA to migrate just files, the two iMacs connected but the source machine finished first and the target lost the source and so the entire effort was cancelled.
My first Apple was an Apple II in the very early 80's. Somewhere along the way I 've become lost. Share your knowledge and earn great merit.

Well, using the Migration Assistant (rather than the Setup Assistant which is only available once during the initial setup) can easily result in duplicate accounts, files, etc. I used it once and will never do that again. Rather than eliminating duplicates (which can become quite involved and/or make things worse rather than better), it would probably be better to simply start over. That was a bit easier before Lion (no install disk). So, if the new iMac came with Lion, I would use the recovery assistant to wipe the disk and start over with the install (scroll down to restoring os x 10.7):

Once you're back to a fresh/clean system, I'd use the Setup Assistant (if available - not sure with this recovery assistant if it follows the same procedure as a disk install would); or, if it does not, I would manually drag over the files you need (target disk mode or, if not available, copy things to an external hard drive and then copy them from there). There is no need for your PPC applications because they will not run anyway.

I did a bad migration to a new iMac Lion copying files

Got a new iMac and tried a migration from a mac book pro and they computers couldn't find each other. Tired to make the new mac a target disk with a firewire cable and started to move all the files. Now I keep getting two error messages saying that HWNetMgr and HWPortDetect wont start up because the dont have the right security rights

I reinstalled the system which is inside the computer.
I called Applecare (they told me to reinstall again or bring it to a shop.
DOES ANYONE HAVE A CLUE HOW TO GET RID OF THIS OR FIX IT. BRAND NEW COMPUTER.
DOESN'T WORK. AND I AM NEW TO MAC WHICH MAKES IT ALL WORSE. GORGEOUS MACHINE THAT I FEEL I RUINED.

New iMac (Lion X.7.5) old airport express

When I try to find airport express on mac I get the message : This version of airport configuration doesn't support this basestation. Use AirPort configuration application 5.6 to configure this base station. AirPort configuration application is available at Dervice and Support for AirPort.
But after downloading and installing this I get the same message.
Connection to my (new) iPad gives a similar problem.

Try reinstalling the OS over the top of the current install. That may or may not fix the safari problem.
If that doesn't fix the problem then use the Online recovery system to wipe the complete drive and then do aa clean fresh install of OS X Lion.
If that doesn't fix alll your Mac problems then pack it back up and return it for a full refund. Apple has a 14 day No Questions Asked Return Policy for full refund.
As to the Airport express problem dump it and buy a regular router that doesn't need some very stupid software program to accesss the setup pages.
All other routers that I know of are accessed by a Web Browser. Simply open a web browser and type in the IP address of the router, normally 192.168.1.1.

New iMac Lion 10.7.3 OSX can't get my MBox 2 mini to work

I recently got a mac with lion 10.7.3 OS and can't find any drivers compatible to operate my MBox 2 Mini.. which is running protools 8 I don't want to purchase protools 9 or 10 because I basically want the MBox to be recognized so I can use it as a interface with logic.... can someone help me or just drop me a link to the drivers I need to install?? Frustrated..............

New iMac (Lion - 10.8.2) - Pogo would not work as Java was not installed. Went into Utilities - open Java Preferences - it has now disappeared - now where to be found. I went into the Terminal - input 'java -version' - it says I have version 1.6. Help!

My Java and Java Preferences do not show up in my 'Utilities' folder nor can I have them in a search. If I can't find them I can't enable Java. Tips - Tricks!!

New iMac seems to have duplicate, nested Application folders

My new iMac (Lion) seems to have duplicate Applications folders nested inside one another. Can I delete them, keeping only the original Application folder? I used the Migration Assistant to migrate my apps from my previous iMac to this new iMac.

I called Apple Support and they advised I simple trash the duplicates. So I dragged the first duplicate to the trash, emptied it, and all is well.

Migration troubles for iPhoto Library from MacBook Air to new iMac

I am having difficulties with migration of my iPhoto Library via the TimeMachine BackUp of my MacBook Air to my new iMac (Lion).
Since the MBA has no firewire port, the only way to migrate content is by way of a back-up hard drive (using WiFi for 245 GB would take days).
I used TimeMachine BackUp with USB port & that took about 2 hours, as expected. iTunes came through without any trouble, but the iPhoto app on my iMac remains new & empty. However, from checking "about this Mac" in my iMac, I know that the pictures are IN my iMac SOMEWHERE: the # of GB's of pictures (138 GB) apparently transferred, matches the size my iPhoto Library on my MBA. But where are they & how can I put them in the iPhoto Library?
Somehow I ended up with 2 users, but I can't find the Library in either one's applications.

With newer Macs you won't need a crossover ethernet cable as the Macs can detect the situation and adjust to it.
Apple products that require an Ethernet crossover cable. This will tell you if you'll need a crossover cable or not.

ICloud not syncing on new imac.

I have a me.com user name.
have moved all information over to icloud.
iphone has picked it up ( new 4s)
mac at work has picked it up ( 2 years old)
These 2 sync fine
Brand new imac (Lion) has it's own few addreses in contacts/ mail/ calendar.
It's like I have 2 versions of what I have stored in cloud.
can anyone help to get imac to link?

Yep, all checked.
I pushed them over last night from the work mac (not Lion)
Mobile me asked to transfer to Cloud)
Instantly my iphone updated.
But I'm realising that it's mobile me old stuff that's syncing.
But when I go to my i cloud log in area, the only files I see are what is on the new imac ( Lion)
So which device is running the show? Any advice?

Windows 7 Drivers for iMac (Lion preinstalled)

While installing Windows 7 in my new iMac (LION preinstalled). When it’s creating the driver cd, while the drivers are being downloaded, the process comes to a halt (around 25% completion) and does not proceed any further. Now i have installed Windows 7 but dont have the drivers due to this reason, Please help. (my internet connection is working properly)

New iMac doesn't support old Macbook Pro instruments

Hi - until recently I had a MacBook Pro ( Leopard ) of about 5 years of age. The screen completely died this month and the MacBook was un-usable. The HD from the MacBook was migrated to a new iMac ( Lion ) a week ago. When I tried to play the 60+ songs I had created in Garage Band on the Macbook over the last 5 years, on the new iMac, many of the instruments were un-supported by the iMac and the songs sound totally different and really are ruined. It seems the iMac doesn't support many of the older instruments on old MacBook HD. The HD from the MacBook Pro is fine ( it all migrated over to the iMac just fine ) and I assume it contains all my Garage Band tracks ( and I assume Garage Band itself is on that HD? ). Is there any way I can play my Garage Band tracks on that HD through another machine or some vehicle that will drive the HD? In other worgs, how can I retrieve these songs with the original sounds/instruments therein?

Maybe not? Look at your loops (in HD/Library/Audio/Apple Loops) and instruments (in HD/Library/Application Support/GarageBand) and compare the folders to your old HD. Maybe it makes sense to just manually copy them over and overwrite what you have on your new machine now - it can't be more, but maybe it's less.
