New iMac loses 2nd monitor

My new Imac 21 - i7 - Lion - dual monitor (connected with thund-hdmi adaptor) has a strange behavior.
Everything works fine, but when the system goes in power saving mode, on coming back sometimes the second monitor becomes gray (working but no wallpaper), sometimes comes back normally, but ALWAYS all applications windows goes back to the main imac monitor.
I've tried to switch of the 2nd monitor and the behavior is the same. So is not a power saving problem.
It seems that the imac always autodetect monitor situation on the fly and moves windows back to the main monitor.
The problem is that the "moving windows back function" seem to be faster than monitor detection.
Is there a way to say to lion: "I always have two monitor, please don't change"?!?
thank you for help.

I suspect it may be the adapter.  I would recommend trying the one Apple recommends here or trying another connections such as a VGA or DVI assuming the monitor has that type of connection.

is it possible to connect a regular monitor (HDMI) to the new iMac?
If not, is there some other way to use two monitors?

You could use a Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter

  • Using new iMac as a monitor for PC Laptop

    Greetings,
I am trying to use my new iMac as a monitor for my work laptop (compaq). Can this be done? If so, how do I do it? Thanks in advance for any help.

As tintinlad says there are software solutions that use VNC connections (link). Hardware solutions exisit but only at Standard Definition TV quality.

BTW, Apple stopped selling iMac G5s in Jan 2006. Your new iMac is presumably an Intel iMac instead.

  • New imac as external monitor for macbook pro?

I have a 2011 macbook pro that I use for work. I am thinking about buying the new imac for use at home. The question is can I use the imac as an external screen for my mbp? Or do I have to have another external monitor to use for that?

can I use the imac as an external screen
    Yes

  • My brand new iMac loses its WiFi connection when it goes to sleep, does anyone have a proven fix?.

I have a MacBook that is about 4 years old and a brand new iMac both are running the most up to date version of Lion.  My old MacBook has no issues; however, my iMac loses its WiFi connection every time it goes to sleep.  There are some discussions about this already out there but does anyone have a proven fix.  This is very frustrating.

I was having the same problem for a long time.  I tried everything but nothing seemed to make it stay connected.  It was very frustrating.  I just got a new Airport Extreme.....bang!.....all better.  Problem gone.

  • New iMac as a monitor for XP Bootcamp on an old Air

    Hello all -
Need your assistance getting an accurate answer on an Apple related issue. Trip to the Apple store (including speaking to 5 employees, 2 of whom were genius bar staff) did not provide the clarity/certainty I am after. More on that later.
I have a work issued 11 inch Air (running XP via Bootcamp). I cannot boot the Apple OS, nor make any changes to the XP environment.
My Air is an "older" model: 11 inch with mini-display port, not the "spark" firewire port, but same size of course.
I am thinking about buying an iMac, which would be dual purpose...second computer and monitor for my Air. But I am unsure if an iMac will do this smoothly with my Air (or which model can or can't do it).
Let me tell you what I have done:
    - two visits to the Apple store
    - conversation #1 (yes, it will work...21 or 27 inch...no mention of firewire or mini-display issue, no issues with XP on Bootcamp)
    - conversation #2 (yes, but 27 inch only....it is ok that Air has mini-display and is using XP via Bootcamp)
    - conversation #3 (yes, but you need to buy an old model iMac that still has mini-display port, not firewire)
    - conversation #4 (no, it will not work with Bootcamp with any configuration)
    - conversation #5 (yes, will work with any 27 inch model...use mini-display to VGA (from Air), use firewire to VGA (from iMac), and then use a male-male VGA to connect the two
Apple has a knowledge base article on the topic, which offers yet another view. However only speaks to 2009 and 2010 models. I am unable to find a similar entry for current iMac models.
Using a 27-inch iMac (Late 2009 or Mid 2010) as an external display
Apple won't test any of this at the genius bar (well, the genius I had - conversation #4 above).
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks
    Dave

Are you talking about the Thunderbolt port on newer Macs? If so, see http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3775 & http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4617.
It appears you cannot use Target Display Mode with one of the newest Macs unless the other Mac also has a Thunderbolt port, & that only Windows 7 supports Thunderbolt, not Windows XP.

  • Connect iMac as 2nd monitor?

I'm using my new 13" macbook pro and I'm hoping that someone can instruct me how to set up my iMac (2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) so that I can use dual monitors?

ScreenRecyler is your only option, and I wouldn't even bother installing it.
I was trying to do the same thing as you, can gave that software a try and it DID work, but it was very laggy and not really usable. I even tried setting it up on its own network connection using firewire and then gigibit Ethernet directly between the two machines and although the did improve, it was still too slow to smoothly scroll a web page or play a video without the frames breaking up.
So sorry, but there is no way.

  • New iMac G5 + External Monitor -- Works?

    Hi guys,
I was thinking about buying the 20" iMac G5 but I was wondering if I could connect a VGA monitor to it to extend the desktop. I don't want to just mirror / clone the desktop onto another screen, I'd like to extend it to have more real estate. Is this possible? Thanks!

It's pretty common knowledge that v.1 anf v.2 iMac's can do screen spanning with Screen Spanning Doctor. I won't say where to get it, as I don't want to go to far against Apple's grain. Suffice to say it works perfectly.
BTW - I started with a 17 inch and connected it to my VGA trinitron because, well, why pay for the 20 in when I needed an external screen anyway? Well, the output from the mini-vga is below VESA standards, and the picture was dark and awfle. My 5 year old Pismo looks rocken' on the Trinitron though... as does ANY powermac. I think a lot of corners get cut in the non-pro hardware... which makes me thnk of the hate-on I had for Performa's.

  • OK if I go with a Mac Pro instead of the new iMac will common monitors work

I have two HP w2007 22 inch Digital Widescreen LCD monitors, can I get by with these for six months until I can buy better displays.
I want to edit video with the New Full Suite of Final Cut Studio Pro 3.

Most of the newer MacPro models have one dual-link DVI port and one mini-display port. So you may need a mini-display-to-DVI adapter if you plan to use two monitors.

  • Adjust brightness of iMac as 2nd monitor

I have a 2012 MacBook Air plugged into an older iMac via mini Display port cable. (Not thunderbolt).
How can I adjust the brightness of the iMac? The Displays system prefs doesn't have a brightness slider for the iMac screen. And the brightness keys on the keyboard only adjust the Air's display.

The iMac controls don't work ?
from: Using a 27-inch iMac (Late 2009 or Mid 2010) as an external display
Use the keyboard of the 27-inch iMac to adjust display brightness and sound volume and to control media playback of applications running on the 27-inch iMac in Target Display mode. Other keyboard and mouse input is disabled on the 27-inch iMac while it is in Target Display mode.

  • 2nd monitor possible on new imac 24"?

I just ordered new imac (24"). Will I be able to hook it up to a 2nd (older Dell) monitor to expand the desktop? If so, what adaptor would I use?

For an external drive I'd recommend a Firewire 800 drive. Unless you are going to be running the computer from the external HD or doing high end video work FW 800 will be more than enough.
    The drives I'd recommend are:
OWC (www.macsales.com) Mercury Elite Pro series
    Lacie Quadra D2 series
    G-Tech G series
All have similar build quality and feature sets. Personally I use Lacie but wouldn't hesitate to use OWC or G-Tech either.
As time goes by there may be other solutions (splitters etc..) and I believe the TB port can daisy chain however you would need to find an external HD with a VGA or DVI output which I don't believe exists. Your alternative is to return the 21.5 and save more money until you can afford a 27".

  • Connecting a 2nd monitor to my 27" iMac

Hi All, I am looking to buy a 2nd monitor to go with my 27" 2.9 GHZ iMac (purchased May 2013) and wandered if anyone could provide some advice on the best way to connect it through a thunderbolt port and is there anything I must ensure the new monitor has or certain specifiction. i am looking to buy a 27" monitor to sit aside my current one. Thanks in advance for any help.

Unless it's an Apple Thunderbolt display or some other Thunderbolt disply you simply connect a MiniDisplay port to (VGA, DVI or HDMI) depending on what the external display has and connect it up. The System Preferences - Diskplays and setup the setting the way you want. This is the ONLY way it will work. There are hundreds of Youtube videos that show you how, here is one example:

  • 1 Lightning port as both 2nd monitor AND storage SSD? - 21" 2011 iMac

    Hello!
I am considering picking up my first SSD drive for use as a work horse for streaming video and audio for my prosumer use.  My 21" 2011 iMac only has the one lightning port, which I plug my old 19" LCD monitor into for the extra screen real estate.  Not wanting to bottleneck the SSD speed by connecting it to USB 2 or even FireWire, does such a throughput device exist that would allow the one lightning port to support both  my 19" display as well as a mounted, external SSD drive?  I know that the lightning port had an expandable future, but I'm not sure if this is possible.  If it IS possible, I would imagine doing so would still be expensive.  Thanks a bunch!

Haha, THUNDERBOLT!   Sorry, mate.  I must have been thinking of the newer iPad/iPhone connector.  Goes to show you how much mind I've paid to apples new port.  Anyway, that's great news.  Thank you.  I was pessimistic about their being enough bandwidth to fully support my 2nd monitor in addition to the top notch speeds of an SSD.  I was curious to know where there might be any sacrifices one way or another.

  • IMac monitor goes dark; 2nd monitor ok

I have a dual monitor setup on my iMac (2009) running Snow Leopard (10.6.8).  The iMac monitor had been working great, but now it goes to a black screen.  I am able to access it briefly (for about a second) by lightly pressing the power button on the back.  The iMac monitor flashes on briefly when I do this and I'm able to quickly click on user.  I used this same method to open Settings and drag it over to the 2nd monitor to change the display setting to Mirror mode, so I'd have access to the dock on the 2nd monitor (Dell 2007WFP).
I have tried the following so far:
         checked cables
restarted by powering off, pressing on/off button for 5 seconds, unplugging for 15 seconds.
         booted in Safe Mode
reset PRAM (I believe this was reset, but I don't know for sure because I couldn't see anything on the monitors.)
    Other information:
2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
         8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
         NVIDIA GeForce 9400
Thank you in advance for help with this issue!

Replacing FBDIMMs would be today inexpensive and worth doing.
No one knows if heat is an issue without your using thermal sensor monitor. Probably want to up the default fan speeds while at it.
And because you don't have Lion+ then even more reason to setup a small maintenace volume on another drive with OS X basic system for repairs. In fact you should always have a bootable backup or two  you can rely on.
Restarting may work, or it  may be you have now new issue with corrupt fies or directory that a safe boot even is no guarantee of fixing.
When in doubt, try a clean new OS install on another drive.
    And FBDIMMs: $25 for a 2x2GB set on Amazon.com
You want to get  the most out of what  you have, a small investment  in RAM,  maybe recycle those drives for 2-4TB units. And an SSD will have system responding better and perform better.
My guess, the 5870 wasn't needed and was overkill and a 5770 for almost  half would have been more than adequate.

    Hi !

Look this article over, the key is to connect either mini display port or thunderbolt and using CMD+F2, let me know if this helps or if it doesn't work out. I'll find another solution if this doesn't work Joel ^_^
