New iMac - need to move files from Macbook Pro to new iMac

Hi there everyone,
Did some quick searching, but didn't find the answer that I needed.
I am picking up my new 27" iMac (base model) and will need to move my files and programs from my Macbook Pro to the iMac. What is the best way to accomplish this? Are there any tools on the iMac that will help do that, or is it a manual effort?
Thanks!
Mark

When you first start new Mac it will ask you if you want to migrate. Say yes at that point and Setup Assistant will migrate everything for you.

  • How to transfer a 8GB .MOV file from MacBook Air (late 2013) via external HD (Samsung S2 Portable) to a Dell laptop ?

    Hi guys and galls,
How can I transfer a 8GB .MOV file from MacBook Air (mid 2013) via external HD (Samsung S2 Portable) to a Dell laptop ? The mentioned file currently will not let me transfer it to my ext HD. I want to upload it afterwards to a Dell laptop with Windows software installed.
Reformatting the drive doesn't seem to be the sollution, since this will erase all the data stored on the ext HD, and it will only allow me to use the drive with either Apple or Microsoft equipment.
Please HELP, running out of options here... Thnx, "Apple-Dummy"

How can I tell whether my External HD is formatted NTFS?
Attach the HDD to your MBP.  Click on the icon on the desktop COMMAND+I. It will produce a display such as this and look what it says by FORMAT.
How do I format my External HD: FAT or ExFAT?
Do this on a PC.  You will have to use the Windows equivalent of Disk Utility.  I am not a Windows user so I cannot give you detailed information regarding this.  I have seen on these forums that there are at times compatibility problems if formatted on a Mac.
Which one is preferred, FAT or ExFAT? And why?
Use ExFAT.  FAT has a file size limitation of 4 GB.
    Ciao.

  • How do you move iMovies from MacBook Pro to iMac?

How do you move iMovies from MacBook Pro to iMac?  I started some projects on my MacBook Pro but would rather have the larger working area provided on the iMac large 27 inch screen.

    Hi there rainyri!
The easiest way for you to do this is to transfer the information to an external drive as an intermediary, then transfer the information from your drive to the internal drive on your iMac. We have an article that explains the steps for doing this, and it can be found here:

The latest version of Migration Assistant is version 5 and should have been installed in you Utilities folder when you upgraded to version 10.8. Use the 10.8 version machine to migrate to and you should have no problems.

  • Access denied when I move files from MacBook to desktop

When move files from my MacBook Pro to my G5 desktop, I can't open them. I get an "access denied" message. I can fix the problem by going to "info" and changing the access, but how can I fix this so it doesn't happen at all? I don't want to have the hassle of resetting the access for each file every time I swap files back and forth between the laptop and desktop.

    Ask and you will receive:
You can do the same thing in terminal using the chmod command, but it requires a bit more of a learning curve.
Leo server has a Built in GUI that allows you to do the same thing as Sandbox, I really feel Apple should have included something similar in the consumer version of Leo, since we are forced to deal with ACL's in Leo whether we want to or not. They are turned on by default and can only be turned off temporarily (fsaclctl command) as they will resume automatically at the next reboot.
Of course you must master the basics before attempting
    ACL's from the command line.
Here are some links to some Leo ACL and command line documents:

  • Aperture installation deleted all image files from MacBook Pro.

After installing Aperture 3, I noticed that all the image files I had on my MacBook Pro immediately disappeared. These were stored in various locations throughout my computer depending on subject (e.g. "Emergency Response Training", "Summer 2009", "Car Restoration" and so on). A small number were in the "Pictures" folder but most were kept in other locations. All the folders and subfolders where these images were stored are intact but the images are gone. There is simply a "thumbs.db" file inside and the folder size is about 6 kb on average.
I did nothing other than install Aperture (no importing or library creation) and none of these images or folders are in the Aperture library. A similar thing happened with iPhoto where all my iphoto thumbnails show up but there appears to be no actual photo. No images prior to Aperture installation appear anywhere on the Macbook using tailored queries with "Find".
Apple support indicated that Aperture would not search out these photos unless prompted and would never delete them but It's hard to imagine how else this could have happened, as it happened only during installation (subsequent photos are fine) and targeted all image files in every location. Hard drive is new and indicates no problems.
Any ideas what might have happened - and, more importantly, how I might be able to recover the missing images? Unfortunately, my upgrade to Lion obliterated my DNS 321 back up disk, as well, and I don't yet know if I can recover those files.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Apple support claimed it was impossible for Aperture to delete files, as well, Allen. All I can tell you is I installed Aperture and the files immediately disappeared. I installed Aperture with the intention of learning its capabilities over the ensuing months, as I had never used it before, and so made sure to do nothing but install and launch so I could have a look at it and see how it was set up.
The network hard drive obliteration occured when I was trying to transfer novie files from my Macbook to my DNS 321 network drive, which I use to store all my backups and most of my media files. I've done this countless times with Snow Leopard without a hitch. However, when I tried it with Lion the system locked up during the transfer and I lost my connection to the drive. Once I managed to reconnect, I found that I couldn't get into the folders on the network drive anymore. All that would come up was a "My Documents" folder, which had no content. After doing a websearch I discovered that Lion no longer supports DNS 321 and that others with similar style drives had been having similar problems. What might be unique to my situation was that when I hooked up an old PC to the DNS 321 I was able to get back into my original folder set up but I found that the folders labelled from (A to J) were missing entirely and that the remaining folders had no content.
So, as I mentioned in my first post, the only input from me was installation and launch of Aperture and the only thing I was doing with my network drive was transferring movie files from the Macbook to the DNS 321 drive. If neither of those actions could possibly have caused the problems I described, I'd be very eager to learn what did.

  • How to move photos from macbook pro to iPhone 6 plus

I am noticing that my brand new iPhone 6 did not load pics from the cloud so want to transfer photos manually from macbook pro onto the new iPhone 6 plus could you direct me how to.thanks Gerald

Are your photos housed in the iPhoto app on the Mac? If so, then hook up your device, click on the Photos tab in the Device Profile Screens to the right, select what photos you want sync'd, and then sync your device to iTunes.

  • Transferring files from MacBook Pro to new iMac via Firewire

    Hi guys
My MacBook Pro is seriously on its way out and I would like to transfer my music files, work documents, photographs, videos etc. onto my brand new iMac and the best way to do this I would think would be to link the two up via Firewire. The MacBook Pro is no longer accepting my external hard drive and fails during during DVD's, so those options are out.
So I was wondering if someone could advise me on what type of Firewire cable to get. As far as I'm aware I didn't get one with either the MacBook Pro or the new iMac, so I think a purchase is necessary however, I've spotted that there are different kinds with different ends, some which have 6-pin, 8-pin and 9-pin and I have no idea what to get. Could someone advise me on what would be the best item to get for this situation?
My MacBook Pro is one that was the model before the black keyboards came back in, and the iMac is the brand new one at 21".
    Thanks for your help guys.
    Steve.

    Hi
FireWire 800 / FW800 / IEEE 1394b uses a 9-pin connector for both the imac and the macbook pro.
    good luck.

  • Quickest way to transfer iMovie 09 Files from Macbook Pro to iMac

    Hello:
We recently got an iMac and I would like to transfer my iMovie 09 files from my macbook pro to the iMac which also has iMovie 09. Can you suggest the quickest and easiest way to do this? I am assumign this can be done since they are both iMovie 09-anyhelp is appreciated

    Huh.
Well, my approach has always been:
    1. Click the "Consolidate Media" menu in File, and click the buttons to move all source materials into the project.
    2. Shut down iMovie
    3. Navigate to Movies/iMovie Projects in Finder, and copy the corresponding project over to the other machine's Movies/iMovie Projects folder.
    4. Start up iMovie on the other machine.
I don't do much video (mostly photo slideshows) in iMovie, but this certainly hasn't caused me any problems before. iMovie just sees the new item in its iMovie Projects folder and allows you to select it.

  • How To Transfer Hard Drive Files from Macbook Pro

I have a macbook pro(late 2006 model) which won't turn on. Brought it to the apple store for them to take a look at. I was told that the main circuit board is broken and it will be cheaper to buy a newer macbook instead of fixing it. I was also told that the harddrive was ok. How do I transfer the files from my old macbook pro hardrive(which won't turn on) to a new macbook pro? They offered to help me at the apple store but it will cost me $99 for their "one to one." Can someone help me? Thanks!

What size of a usb external harddrive caddy do I need? What is compatable with the macbook pro hardrive?
2.5" SATA. USB2 models can be found be found for $15 or so. Then the enclosure can be used with an old or new HD for backups/troubleshooting. I have way too many around, but I don't know what I'd do without at least one 2.5" and one 3.5" (but I prefer the faster FireWire 800 models, which are more expensive). In any case, I think it's safe to say you won't regret spending $15 on an enclosure.

  • Can't delete file from macbook pro...

I recently bought a new macbook pro (2.3 GHZ, i5, 4gb ram...) and began to download some torrents. I was converting one movie file to play on my iphone but I cancelled the conversion because I realized the picture quality of the movie wasn't that great. I deleted the file but now there is a left over file that can only be seen under the "all my files" section in the Finder that I canno delete. There is no icon for this file except for this grayed out cut out.
When I click "get info" I'm unable to move to trash that way and it says I have "unknown access" under the sharing and permissions tab. I can't drag the file to the trash bin and when I do, another file is taken instead.  When I click on the icon this message displays -The alias “Immortals.2011.DVDScr#8B1B.divx” can’t be opened because the original item can’t be found" I'm given options to click "Delete alias, Fix alias, or Ok". When I click delete alias, nothing happens, when I click Fix alias I can't find the original becuase I've obviously deleted it and clicking ok just closes the message.
    I have two questions,
    1. When I "get info" on file, it states that the file size is 956 mb. Is it really taking that much space up on my hd? I know I deleted the original file. What gives?
    2. How can I delete this file?
I could really use some help on this. I've asked my friends and they coudln't figure it out either.
I'd appeciate any and all who can give me some ideas.
    Thanks,
    D
