New iMac, new iPhoto app to old iMac

I've recently gotten a new iMac, and it came loaded with the latest version of iPhoto 11. My older iMac still lives at home, and has an older version of iPhoto, and a different library. My goal is to update the app on the old machine. AppStore doesn't "see" that I'm due an update, and I tried zipping the new app over to Dropbox, then downloaded on the old machine, and opening, but I'm getting permission issues I can't seem to fix. Get Info on the old machine won't tell me what version I have, even, which seems odd (probably v9.2.1). I've made myself "owner" of both versions on the old Mac, but the error I keep getting, when I choose "Replace the old one with this one" is permission related.
Another wrinkle, fwiw: old machine I want to update now is running Lion, and the new machine still runs SL. Can't update it yet due to work related software that hasn't made the jump yet.
Thanks for any insights into how to make this happen.

Get it from the App store for $14.99.  That way you won't have to purchase the entire iLife 11 disc ($49) from the online Apple Store with all of the iApps on it.
You could try eBay for a used copy of iLIfe 11 but probably would be more than the $14.99.
Happy Holidays

  • How do I create a journal from an iMac based system - I can see how to do it with the new iPhoto app for iPhone or iPad

How do I creat a journal to share using my mac air?  I can see how to do it with my iPad or iPhone 4s with the new iphoto app for them. I guess "journals" replace Galleries in the Cloud. I do not see the same functionality of the upgraded iPhoto app on my Mac air, iMac ormac mini.
    Thanks

Afraid no one outside of Apple knows what plans - if any - they have.

  • Is there a way to create new events on the new iPhoto app?

Is there a way to create new events on the new iPhoto app?  I seem to only be able to create albums.  I would really like the app to allow me to do all the same things that I was able to do on my Mac.  I would create events and then sync to all devices.  Can someone please instruct me on how to create new events from the photos imported from the photo stream.
    Thanks for all the help!

The iPhoto for iOS seems to be aimed at working on photos then sharing them to social media sites or to iCloud for sharing there. iPhoto for iOS does not perform many of the organizing tasks that iPhoto on your Mac does. Many people expected that there would be more capabilities in iPhoto for iOS that would allow it to work more closely with iPhoto on your computer but this is not the case. They are separate apps.

  • How do I merge events on the new IPhoto. The old one was simply drag and drop, this one will not.

How do I merge events on the new IPhoto. The old one was simply drag and drop, this one will not.

There are no longer events in Photos.  The new Photos for Mac is structuring the Photos Library automatically into Moments based on dates and locations. You cannot change the moments.
When Photos migrates an iPhoto Library, it will create album for each event in the iPhoto Library, as a substitute, but these album based "events" are a fake, because albums behave differently from events.
In iPhoto each photo could be only in one event, so you could move photos from one event to another. With albums, dragging a photo from an album to another album will simply add the photo to the other album as well.
You will have to remove the photo from the original album.

  • Very disappointing why do I need a camera on my iPad to manage edit photos in new iPhoto app?

Very disappointing why do I need a camera on my iPad to manage edit photos in new iPhoto app?

That's just a visual differentiator so folks can easily tell if it will run on their machine. The difference is the RAM and processor in the iPad 2 and iPad (New). The camera has nothing to do with the physical requirements.

  • Aperture integration with new iPhoto app

    Do these programs work together?
I do not use iPhoto on my mac, just Aperture 3.  I don't need or want to add another layer of complexity to my work flow, however, if this new iPhoto app is better and more intergrated into the Apple ecosystem than, say, SnapSeed or one of the other very good iPad apps, then I'm all for it.
    Any ideas?

You do not need to use iPhoto on your Mac to use iPhoto on your iOS device. iPhoto on your iOS device will edit pictures from the camera roll on the device.
If you want to sync pictures from your Mac TO your iOS device, you can choose to use Aperture or iPhoto in the iTunes preferences. No need to switch to iPhoto on the Mac. However, if you're already editing pictures on your Mac, you don't really need to edit them on your iDevice as well...
If you're using something like the Camera Connection Kit with your iPad and want a better photo editor while you're on the go, you might wait to see just a little bit and see what kind of reviews the new iPhoto for iOS gets and maybe someone can compare the features for you.

  • After migrating to a new MacBook Air from an older MacBook, iPhoto gets stuck on uploading cache, it just "spins" forever. I downloaded a new iPhoto app and replaced it but when opened it just does the same thing? What is going on?

After migrating to a new MacBook Air from an older MacBook, iPhoto gets stuck on "uploading cache", it just "spins" forever. I downloaded a new iPhoto app and replaced it, but when opened it just does the same thing? What is going on? Where are my photos now? How can I upload photos from my camera without iPhoto?
    Is there a better app?
    Thanks, Chris

Take the system to an Apple store to be fixed or replaced as the one you have has defective hardware.

  • Need Help With New iPhoto App

    Hello,
I recently updated to the new Photos app and when I tried to open it and migrate my library an error popped up saying that I need at least 75 GB of space. I checked and had 55 GB free at the time. I went through and deleted a bunch of excess things like music, videos, documents, and unused apps. When I went back to check it said that I had only 52.56 GB of free space. I don't understand. This is now what my storage looks like.
So now it seems that after deleting things I have less space AND I still cannot migrate my photo library. I'm out of the country now and have many video projects that I need to do for work. As a side note, I don't use iCloud for my photos or videos. Not sure if that would have anything to do with it.
    Thanks for any help!
    Warmly,
    Autumn Marie

The storage used in that display is only an estimate. What do you see, when you select your Macintosh HD in the Finder and look at the sizes in the "Finder > File > Get Info" panel for your harddisk? The free storage is shown in the General brick of the Info panel:
The migration may be needing more free storage, if your iPhoto Library has a corruuption and needs repairing.
Try the iPhoto Library First Aid Tools before you try to migrate the library again to Photos:
Make a backup copy on an external drive.
Then try the iPhoto Library First Aid Tools on your iPhoto Library  to repair the permissions and to repair the database.
To repair hold down the  alt/option and the command key simultaneously while double clicking the iPhoto application in the Applications folder  to launch the iPhotos Library First aid tools. Hold down both keys firmly and long enough, until the First Aid panel will appear.
The select "Repair database".  Repeat with "repair Permissions".
If it still does not suffice, repeat with "Rebuild Library".
Then try to migrate the library again to Photos by dragging it onto the Photos icon in the Dock.

  • Using new iPhoto to update old .Mac gallery

I want to use iPhoto 6.0.3 to update this photo gallery, which was started in an older version of iPhoto: http://homepage.mac.com/lpennock/
I used to be able to select "share to web" or whatever that option was and update the gallery that way, but now it seems I can only create new "iWeb" galleries that show up here: http://web.mac.com/lpennock/iWeb/Site/random%20summer.html
If there is a way to move my entire .Mac gallery at the link above to a iWeb photo page, that's fine, I just want them all to be in the same place. Is this possible? Are all the old .Mac galleries now non-updatable?
    Thanks!
    -Lewis

    Lewis:
The only way I've been able to update my Homepage galleries was to do the following:
1 - export the files you want to add to a folder on the desktop resizing them to the size of the ones already in the gallery.
2 - mount your iDisk and locate the folder on the iDisk that contains the files for that gallery and copy your files into it.
3 - go the the .Mac page and log in and then goto the Homepage section.
4 - select the page you want to edit and click on the Edit button.
5 - the newly added files should show up at the bottom where you can edit the title and place them where you want.
As far as converting from Homepage to iWeb easily, there is no easy way. I'm in the process of doing it now and have to go about it this way.
1 - create the photo page in iWeb.
2 - go to the iDisk and download the source files for the Homepage you're converting.
3 - select all of the downloaded image files and drag into the iWeb photo page.
4 - with your Homepage open in Safari, copy the general text and photo text and past into the appropriate section of the iWeb page. Tedious work at best.

  • New ipad apps on old ipad2

Will new apps built for the new Ipad (3) run on the old iPad 2?

Open iTunes on the computer. Ensure that iTunes has been authorized on this computer to play/transfer your purchases: In the menu at the top (it says, "File, Edit, View, Controls, Store, ...") you click Store, then about halfway down the menu, choose "Authorize Computer." Enter your Apple ID and password. You want it to say "Authorization Successful..." or "This computer is already authorized..."
Then, plug in your original iPad and select File (menu at the top), and then "Transfer Purchases From ..." near the bottom of the menu. It should be fairly quick, but may take a while if you haven't transferred them before. You can refer to HT1848 for help, if you want pictures.
Once done, plug in your iPad 2 (unplug the iPad 1 first). When the iPad shows up under DEVICES on the left of iTunes, you can choose which apps to sync to it. The steps found in article HT2109, while addressing iPhones, are identical to transferring them to your new iPad.

  • HT5037 I prepared my library, but now I can't open the new iPhoto or the old one.

I got a new MacBook Pro this week. I'm using Dropbox to transfer all my files over from my old MacBook. When I tried to open my iPhoto Library that I put in Dropbox, I got a message saying, "To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared." So, I clicked the link and downloaded the iPhoto Library Upgrader. I followed the steps, and when I opened the iPhoto Library Upgrader, I got this message: "You can't open your library using this version of iPhoto. You have made changes to your library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto."
What should I do to resolve this?

Dropbox has not worked well with iPhoto - the iPhoto library must always be on a volume formatteed Mac OS extended (journaled) - it is presumed that that DropBox  does not do this and that probably is teh problem
Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc)  or use an external hard drive formed Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

  • How to retrieve contents in new imovie app from old one under new Yosemite?

I have upgraded my Mac Pro with with new Yosemite. I now have the new version of iMovie, and i can't open the old one anymore (iMovie 9.0.4). Howeer the new version is blank and I can't retrieve the projects I've started. How can I find them?

You should have a copy of iMovie 9.0.9 in a separate folder in the Applications folder after updating to Yosemite (from Snow Leopard?).  This should still be useable.
To transfer projects to iMovie 10, you need to update them from within iMovie 10.  See: http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0.8/#/mov902ad0c31
I'ts best not to change versions mid-project though because the new version is very different from the old one.

  • HT1338 Downloading new iPhoto app.

I cannot install iPhoto update because it says my startup disk does not have enough memory.  I moved 18 hrs of tv/movies off my MacBook Air but still cannot download it.

Make sure you have emptied trash to clear the items off your boot drive, next you might have to wait for a copule of reboots to get OS X to recognize your new freee drive space.

    Tap Camera Roll.
Confirm or change the photos you want to share by tapping an option.
Select all the photos in an album or event: Tap All.
Select a range of photos: Tap Choose, tap Range, tap the first and last photos in the range, and tap Next.
