New iMac Not Recognizing iBook Running In Target Mode

Help!! I am helping a friend transfer all of her files and settings from her old iBook to a new iMac. I have repeatedly followed the instructions for using the Migration Assistant but the new iMac does not recognize the iBook after it is started in Target Mode. I have switched cables, zapped the pram, used the startup disk to repair disks and permissions. I can plug in an external firewire drive and it recognizes it immediately. I was called Apple Support, talked with first layer technician, was put on hold for next level of technician, put phone on speaker, person came back, said they couldn't hear me and hung up. Called back and low and behold it was quitting time. Very, Very frustrated.

Several posters have reported this. A solution that has worked for some is to place a powered firewire hub between the two machines (if you external FW disk is self powered and has two FW ports, that might work).

  • IMac not recognizing bluetooth nor USB mouse and keyboard

The iMac I use has suffered a pretty annoying problem. I typically use a wireless keyboard and magic mouse with the iMac (I could be wrong, but I believe these both use Bluetooth technology). First, the iMac stopped recognizing these. They kept losing connection last Friday and then suddenly stopped recognizing them at all. Yes, they both have full batteries and blink to show me they are on and searching for the iMac.
Second, I tried using a USB mouse and a USB keyboard to get into the iMac and fix the problem. But neither are recognized by the iMac as well. The mouse is a Dell model that has a red light on the bottom, and it glows red for less than a second when I plug it into the USB port before going dark again and not working. So, I can't get into the iMac to fix the problem.
I've read a few other things on the community boards. I restarted the iMac. I unplugged it completely for several minutes and held down the power button for fifteen seconds while the power was unplugged. I've tried multiple mice and keyboards, all to no effect.
Is the iMac not recognizing the USB keyboard/mouse because it's still searching for the bluetooth versions that it will no longer recognize? Is there a way to fix this without setting up an appointment with the geniuses?
    Thanks!

I'm having the same problem. It started happening on my Late 2012 model iMac 21.5" after applying the latest update.
What I found was that nothing seemed to work connected directly to the iMac. However, if you attach an externally powered USB hub, then all devices attached to the hub will work. It seems as if the USB ports are still working, but without power.
After I was able to get my USB keyboard to work, I was able to zap the PRAM (hold command-option-P-R while powering on) and then magically everything was back to working again. Unfortunately, this was short lived as the problem has resufaced again for me today, but you could give it a try anyway.

FCP doesn't like mpeg2 transport streams. You might give ClipWrap a chance to do the conversion. They have a free trial. If it works, the full version is something like $50.

  • Brand new iMac 3.4GHz fan runs all the time - how do I stop it?

Hi, just opened my shiny new imac but the fan runs all the time and very loud! Has anyone any ideas how to fix this or should I return the imac to apple?
I've also noticed that none of my external drive icon show up on the desktop - nor does the imac hardrive icon appear - any ideas?
    Thank you in anticipaction.

Try an SMC reset, you may need to do it at least 2x.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • New Imac - not sure if this is the right thread, sorry!

Hi there, my mother has just purchased a new Imac, (not sure which one sorry) and it is missing IMovie, although it seems to have all of the other i life applications...I have searched applications and hard drive, but it does not seem to be there - any ideas??? Thanks in advance.

It should be installed. If it got deleted accidentally, find Disc 1 of the discs that came with the Mac.
On the disc, there should be a link for +Install Bundled Software Only+. Double-click that icon to launch Installer. Go through the initial screens, and click the Customize button when it comes up. De-select (uncheck) everything except for iMovie HD.
    Then click the Install button.

  • Older iMac not recognizing AirPort card

I manually installed an AirPort Extreme card in my G4 iMac. I followed the instructions exactly. However, it's not showing up anywhere in the Network Preferences. It's like I never installed it. I think I did everything right, I even went back and did it again, still to no avail.
Is there something I'm missing here? Remove screws, plug in card, restart computer, right?
Part of what be my problem is I'm using a newer iMac that does have an AirPort card built-in as a base station, (or, at least, that's the plan- is nothing showing up because I don't have a real base station?). Maybe I'm totally wrong about all this, but I don't think that should stop my computer from not recognizing the card.
It is an older card, bought refurbished from the Apple Online Store.

Which G4 iMac did you install the card into? Does it have a clock speed of 1 GHz or faster? Click on the Apple menu and select "About this Mac".
Assuming the clock speed is 1 GHz or faster, run System Profiler and look in the "AirPort:" field. If the card is not recognized, the field will be blank.

  • CS6 New iMac non-recognized plug-ins issue.

I have a brand new iMac and when I started using CS6 (transferred from my time machine back up), it was fine for a few days until inDesign started telling me various plugi-ins were not recognized. I had to uninstall, then re-install and it seemed fine for a few days, then started to give me the same non-recognized plu-ins error messages again. What gives? Any suggestions? Think it could be a Mountain Lion issue not an Adobe issue?

What else did you migrate over? There's no telling what you danaged that way.
That said, can you post screenshots of the error messages? Something might just stand out that would let us help you.

  • Suddenly iMac not recognizing BD-R

Been using a burned BD-R data disc, now suddenly the disc is not being recognized and ejects. I tried a couple other burned BD-R's and they are not recognized either.  Any thoughts on what has happened?
Only thing that has been different is I played one of the video BD-R's in a Sony player, then ineserted it into iMac. Since then I have the non-recognizing issue. Coincidence, or not? Any ideas?

Except that my iMac DID play burned video BD-R discs. Including a burned data BD-R. Several times actually. Now suddenly, it does not. Lots of folks back up data on a blu-ray disc.
Interesting. I wonder how that was accomplished since neither the hardware nor Mac OS support BluRay. You not only need an external Blu-Ray burner, but third party software as well (for burning and playback such as Roxio Toast) unless..... are you running Windows?

  • New iMac 2 extra displays running bootcamp

I am looking to get a new iMac, but would like to know if external displays are supported when running bootcamp. (You may see where I am going here), PC gaming with flight sims. Optimal would be to use 2 Apple displays connected via Thunderbolt, (but not necessary to be Thunderbolt).
Any experience with this setup???? Thanks for your reply.

Probably late reply... Anyhow: no, atm windows is not properly supporting thunderbolt, thus you can run only one additional monitor in bootcamp (a shame, i cannot run iracing with a triple display setup!)

Also, it helps to look through the forum because there may be other threads just like yours. • Brand new Shuffle - not recognized in Windows or iTunes

I just got an iPod Shuffle 1Gb for Christmas (today). Followed all the instructions installing software, etc. Plug in the iPod - the light on the front flashes orange. Does not show up in My Computer, Device Manager or iTunes.
Uninstalled iPod and iTunes software, rebooted, installed latest iPod and iTunes software downloaded from website. iPod still not recognized and still flashes orange when plugged in to a USB port. Tried several different USB ports - no change.
    Rebooted again (more than once).
    iPod is fully charged.
    iPod has been reset.
I can't restore it, because even the iPod software doesn't recognize it.
My USB ports are fine - digital camera and external USB hard drive still work when plugged in to the various ports. Unplugged all other USB devices and iPod still wasn't recognized.
All my friends love their iPods. This is my first one. I have to say... I'm not impressed.
As I said, this was a gift, so I don't have a receipt for it, and there isn't an Apple store near me. And I think having to pay $30 to send it back to Apple so they'll replace it with a "new, used or refurbished" iPod is bullsh*t.

I had the same problem today.
What I found is that during the install routine, the Shuffle was not formatted. I went through Windows Explorer (right click on "Start" and choose "explore"). My computer found the shuffle as a removable media, but when I tried accessing it (clicking on the drive while in explorer), I got a message saying that it wasn't formatted. So, I said yes to the prompt to format it and as soon as it did, iTunes saw it and started the rest of the install routine. I had to restart and replug in the device, and it seems to be working great.
I don't know if this will help you out, but it is worth a try.
    Merry Christmas

  • New iPod not recognized in Vista PC and no devices in iTunes

Hello, plugged iPod Touch into computer and Vista showed usual little box which said automatically located drivers and installed them. But couldn't find iPod in My computer. Installed iTunes from download area. No devices in left column.
Reinstalled iTunes from fresh download. Plugged iPod in every USB point on computer, but nothing happens. IPod not found or recognized.
Tried to find USB driver in Device Manager but all have generic names and so can't identify which driver was installed for iPod. None show installation date or anything which may identify which one. Also forgot to create restore point first (kicking self - always do this normally before installing something new).
Been through Apple help pages and tried all their ideas including reinstalling. Still nothing found.
Could someone please suggest what to do, besides dropping computer out of window?
    Many thanks
    Phil Chave

    I would try this:

  • Yosemite & new iMac not seen using 5Gz wireless

I have a new iMac and an older macbook pro plus a number of other devices on my home network.
All my devices connect using 2.4GHz wireless except my iMac which uses 5 GHz wireless. Everything was working fine up until I upgraded to Yosemite OS X. Now all my devices on the 2.4 GHz wireless can see each other fine. But they can't see my iMac and my iMac can't see them. The error is "no route to host". The firewall on the iMac is off so it should work.
So it seems related to the fact that my iMac is on the different wireless frequency, as all the other devices are fine. I upgraded both my macbook and iMac to Yosemite so it is not Yosemite purely at fault. There seems to be a problem routing from my iMac to the other devices on the BT Hub.
I think it is a BT Hub 5, it's certainly very recent.
    Any help?

    Hi,
Thanks for the quick reply. It didn't work however. I reset the hub, and my devices so they all reset all their connection information.
    To be clear,
I have the iMac - with newly installed OS X Yosemite, it connects to the hub fine and has internet connection fine through the hub. It is connected on 5 GHz wireless.
I have a macbook pro - with newly installed OS X Yosemite, it connects to the hub fine and has internet connection. It connects at 2.4 GHz wireless.
I have a bunch of other devices on the network that connect at 2.4 GHz wireless.
If I ping a device from my macbook it gets a reply and can see them fine. If I ping my iMac it times out, i.e. it can't see the iMac.
Likewise I can't ping any devices from my iMac.
This is a bit of a problem as I use my iMac as a home server for music and films.
It used to work fine when both my iMac and MBP were on Mavericks. It only started happening when I upgraded to Yosemite. Though Yosemite works fine on my MBP.

  • New imac not working properlyHELP

Hi I have had a new imac for a week. I cannot get on to an apple site at all, had to get here with my Sony laptop. It just hangs when I try to load an apple website, and if I get it to load, I cannot get to support pages WHY
Also today iphoto stopped working, it says it needs to be upgraded, and just closes. What gives
    Help please

So far, what you describe does not sound like a hardware problem. Try creating a new user admin user account
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8235.html
It may just be you current user account is corrupted in some way, and therefore "broke."
Log out of your usual account (from the bottom of the Apple menu). You will get to the login screen, where you should see that new account you created. Select it and log in to the new account. Your iMac will be using fresh user preference files in the new account. Try the same things that do no work in your usual account.

  • New computer not recognizing iPod

My laptop hard-drive crashed, but I had all my iTunes on an external hard drive. My iPod (30GB, noncolor, flywheel) had been synching with the ailing laptop and was not working right (showing the folder/exclamation point sign; when I hard reset it now I just get the Apple symbol and clicking sounds), so I'm assuming my iPod problems are just a reflection of an aborted synch attempt with the dying compueter.
So now I've successfully reset iTunes on my work desktop PC with Windows XP via the external hard drive. I downloaded the latest iPod version onto the new computer but it is not "recognizing" my iPod...it says to plug in my iPod when it is already plugged in. The plugged in iPod seems to alternate between "Do Not Disconnect" and "OK to Disconnect" (with a giant checkmark) messages. Regardless, the iTunes page is not "recognizing" the iPod...
Once I do figure out how to get my iPod "recognized", should I choose to RESTORE or UPDATE it? I don't have playlists or ratings to worry about, just ~3500 preciously selected songs I enjoy shuffling at random.
    Thanks!

I cannot "See" the iPod. I have tried it on different computers that worked before with my iPod. On a laptop computer, there is some humming and clicking as if it is about to be recognized, but my iPod never shows up on the iTunes list (under Library, playlists, etc). When I go to "My Computer", there is nothing listed under the appropriate E drive (USB port). On a desktop computer, the iPod actually changes to the "Do Not Disconnect" sign and again there is the expected humming and clicking that suggests it is going to be "recognized", but it never comes up on the iTunes list. Under My Computer, there is a transient picture of something like a hard-drive with a big red questionmark, as if the computer is in the process of "recognizing" something at the USB port, but this fades and then there is intermittently this "removable storage" listed under drive F. As if it is only transiently being "recognized". When I manage to right click on the transient icon under My Computer, I get the list pulled down and left click on "Format..." but nothing happens. Then the iPod screen changes from "Do Not DIsconnect" (which again was an improvement from the other computer where there was no sign the iPod was even attempting to engage with the computer) to the giant checkmark and "OK to Disconnect" sign OR goes back to the "File Folder/! icon". Tried several times....
    What do you think?
