New iMac, old programs, peripherals

Posting here in GB to get your thoughts. Also posted under iMac.
Got this message:
+If you install and 3rd party software such as Band-in-a-Box, check the vendor site to make sure it is compatible with Snow Leopard 10.6. Also, if you want to connect peripherals such as printers/scanners/copiers/cameras/external drives. Check those vendor sites to make sure the software/hardware is compatible with 10.6+
This is unwelcome news to me. I had thought that compatibility had to do with operating system. For example, Band-in-a-Box required 10.3.9 (Panther) as a minimum. Anything higher would be fine....I thought. Apparantly there also might be a problem with programs which work on a G4 PC might not work with an intel processor. And other hardware. So my HP printer/scanner/copier/fax might not work with Snow Leopard? Does this mean I would have to buy a new printer, and programs? Not good.
2) +You can install Rosetta from the install disc that comes with your iMac in order to run those apps+
I'll check out this Rosetta thing, but will that make those old programs compatible with my new iMac? Printer as well? Other things: like my Nikon camera? My preamp for home recordings? My Yamaha keyboard.
Starting to get a bit worried here.
Never thought that when I got the new iMac with Snow Leopard, I'd have to buy a whole bunch of other stuff.....some relatively expensive...to do what I have to do on the computer.

The GarageBand aspect would involve Band-in-a-Box (which I use mostly for comping and that always goes to GB when it's to be part of my song), +my preamp for home recordings, my Yamaha keyboard+, and more, necessary for GB work. Sorry I didn't spell that out more carefully. Additionally, I might want to install GB2 and finish some tunes there instead of bringing them in the new GB.
Further, since the primary use of a computer for me involves home recording...primarily through the use of GB... seemed to me other musicians might have had to deal with this and I value their opinions.

  • After Migration to new iMac, old Photoshop won't launch

I used the Migration Assistant in Firewire Target Disk Mode to transfer my old Apps and files and folders from my intel Macbook to my new 24" iMac. I had to do it several times since it transferred Applications okay, and all the folders, but the folders were empty on the new machine. I finally had to drag and drop the contents of most folders. Everything seems to be working okay now except for one glaring failure. My old Photoshop 7.0.1, which was working just fine in Rosetta on the Macbook, no longer works at all. It will not even launch. I get an error message that due to an "unrecoverable error" in programming, Photoshop will close now, almost as soon as it tries to start. I have a number of other Power PC applications (even Adobe ones) of similar vintage that are working just fine. I tried reinstalling the Application entirely (still have all my old Apps!), but it had no effect on the failure to launch. I checked with Adobe and they declined to support such an old version. Any ideas on what could be causing this that I might check? Having blown all my money on the new iMac I really cannot afford to purchase a new Photoshop right now.

Photoshop 7 is not compatible with Mac OS 10.5 and Adobe offers no fix. You'll need to upgrade.

  • New iMac, Old iMac

    Hello everyone;
I've just bought a new iMac and used the migration assistant to move all my settings etc. The problem is that I really wanted to start with a "clean" slate on the new machine while keeping my preferences, emails etc. My old iMac had my personal account as the admin, but I found out after the fact that it is better to keep the admin account clean and then create myself as a user. Is there a way to reformat(I think this is what I'm looking at) but keep all my settings, preferences, and files for email etc. I hope you understand what I'm trying to relay here. I just want a totally clean start.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you in advance,
    Mick

The simplest way to do this is to add a new admin user to your system, and change the status of the main user to no longer be admin using the new admin user as the controller.

  • New Mac - old programs cant run due to unsupported PPC.

Just bought my Mac10.7 and notice that all of my old programs such as Office, Photoshop, etc aren't readable.  I get a 'program not supported for ppc'.  Is there anything I can do to make these programs work on my new mac? Thanks.

Office 2008, and 2011 are able to run in Lion.
Neo Office, OpenOffice, iWork, and Google Docs are also all alternatives that work as well.
Photoshop CS4 and later work with Lion with some limitations.

  • Permanent loss of Internet connection on new iMac - old G3 works fine

After 1 month new iMac won't connect to Internet. (Cable modem/ethernet) All usual procedures tried - powering off modem/unplugging connection etc/rebooting. Network connections show valid addresses etc and modem shows correct lights - even sending/receiving!
Reconnecting old G3 works immediately! So can't be problem with ISP or cable modem.
    Any ideas please?

Update for anyone reading the first post.
Solved the problem by archive & install 10.5 and updated again to 10.5.1 and other updates EXCEPT Security Update 2007-009 1.1 which I installed yesterday and coincided with accessing the net problem!
Question - now to install this Security Update?!

  • New iMac, old "dead" XP laptop with backup of iTunes library on Iomega eGo

Here is the scoop - We have a brand new iMac and would like to make it where we control iTunes. My wife's iPod has the bulk of our iTunes library on it but not all of it. We have an external Iomega eGo that has a fairly recent backup of our iTunes library from a recently defunct HP laptop which ran XP.
Can I attach the eGo to the iMac and copy the iTunes library to the iMac? Will the iMac "see" the eGo or was/is the eGo formatted for XP?
Or... is our only option to create a new library on the iMac using my wife's iPod as the source?
Besides an iPod and an iPhone... the new iMac is our first Apple computer and so far we love it... just trying to figure out how to get iTunes running on it without losing alot of our music.
And we already have Time Machine running to a G-Technology drive... so once we are running, we should be fairly well protected against future drive issues. : )

  • IWeb, new iMac, old MacBook, comments, sharing, etc

    Hi,
I made a page on my new iMac and:
    1. I want people to be able to comment on my blog but do not know how to enable that or if it is possible
    2. I want to be able to work on it using my MacBook. I just tried and discovered that iWeb does not seem to be on there anymore. Maybe it is because I upgraded to Leopard and iLife was erased at that time. Is it possible to extract the iWeb from my reboot disk from my MacBook and then work on the page I built using my iMac by transferring it through my MobileMe network?
Thanks for the help you offer,
    David

David ~ The following is from iWeb's Help viewer...
If you publish your site to MobileMe, you can let visitors post comments to your blog or podcast entries. These comments are visible to anyone who visits your website. You can also allow visitors to attach files (which other visitors can download) to their comments.
To allow visitor comments on your blog or podcast:
    • Select a blog or podcast page in the sidebar.
    • If the Blog & Podcast Inspector isn’t open, click Inspector in the toolbar (or choose View > Show Inspector), and then click the Blog & Podcast Inspector button.
    • In the Blog pane of the inspector, select “Allow comments.”
    • To permit visitors to attach files (such as images) to their comments, select “Allow attachments.”
Is it possible to extract the iWeb from my reboot disk from my MacBook...
You should have an iLife CD that came with your MacBook — reinstall iWeb from that.
...and then work on the page I built using my iMac by transferring it through my MobileMe network?
    See this Apple doc...
iWeb: Publish to your MobileMe account from more than one computer.

  • A new IMac, old xp pc, Linksys and a new Hp All in one...now what?

Someone please point me in the right direction. I need to share all the functions of the HP all in one, printing and scanning with my new mac and old xp PC. Sharing files will be nice as well. At this point all will be hardwired. I may add a PC notebook wirelessly in the future. The Imac and the pc are hardwired to the router ( Linksys WRT54G Version 2). At this point I can access the internet fine. The printer HP CM1312nfi MFP is still in the box.
What do I do next. My router is out of warrantee and Linksys will not help. Apple care tells me to call Linksys and HP says the same.
I need a simple step by step guide that I can understand. I have been searching the internet for days and I simply give up?
    Please help.
    Thanks in advance!

  • New iMac old(er) iPods

I have just purchased an iPod and and am in the process of restoring my library which has been a bit intense, but I'm making progress. The library was originally created on a PC which all of my families iPod's synced to. Once I get the libraries restored(hopefully soon) will I be able to sync the iPods to the iTunes library with the iMac? If not, what do I need to do be able to begin syncing with the iMac. Thanks in advance.

When you connect any of those iPods to the Mac it will probably tell you that they need reformatting from Windows to Mac. If so, you just need to restore the iPod(s) to factory settings.
However, you don't necessarily have to reformat the iPod because a Windows iPod will work just fine on a Mac running OS X. Many folks leave it like that for the convenience of being able to use the iPod on both a Mac and a Windows machine, and I left my new Classic Windows formatted for months before I eventually reformatted.
The one downside is that you won't be able to update the iPod software if you leave it Windows formatted unless you do it on a Windows PC. So, if you want to update and you only have access to a Mac, you'll need to reformat it.

  • New computer, old programs

I have just purchased a new computer. The creative suite I had on my previous one was 3.3. Will I still be able to download those versions -- if so, then how? Or will I have to upgrade to the new versions?

What other programs are not behaving properly? Have you tried uninstalling then reinstalling Dropbox? You need to make sure to have all the application support .plists removed.

  • From External HD to new iMac?

I got a new iMac (old one died). I have my entire home folder (old Mac) backed-up on an external HD. How do I get the files from the external HD to the new mac? What do I need to transfer? How? I'm unable to find instructions to do this?
Here are some of the things I need to transfer.
iCal, Mail, Documents, Safari Favorites, Firefox Favorites, iTunes library (+podcasts), Address Book. Am I missing anything else?

Connect the external drive to the computer and run the Migration Assistant. If your old iMac was an Intel based machine you can safely migrate everything. If it was a G4 or G5 iMac I'd recommend that you migrate only data.

I am looking to update to a new imac with intel core processor. I am still old school with a powerbook G4:)
I want to know if I am going to have to upgrade all graphic programs right away after buying new computer.
Trying to weigh ALL costs involved.
    Thanks for any advice!!!

Anything you have that is powerpc code only will not run on a new machine.  OS X 10.8 has no support for powerpc code (universal binary programs should be fine).
Other than that warning, without knowing exactly what programs you have, and what version you are on, it is hard to say whay will or will not migrate alright.
you might need to do some web searching and check apps at sites like roaringapps or on the programs Company web site.

I use Time Machine to back up my entire computer with my external hard drive. I am getting a brand new iMac this month and was wondering what is the process of using this back up to restore my new computer exactly how my old computer was? I want to make sure I will still have various important files on my new computer, like my songs in iTunes, my photos in iPhoto, etc, etc. Thanks so much in advance!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
When you turn on the new iMac for the first time, Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so connect the external disk and follow steps to restore all your files to your new iMac. Your new Mac will have the same settings and programs as your old computer.
In other cases, I would recommend to restore the whole backup without using Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant, but a Late 2012 iMac uses a special OS X build, so the OS X version that you're using on your old Mac won't work on the new one.
