New iMac on the way

Hi everyone, I ordered a new iMac two days ago, my first Mac of any kind. The operating system and everything will be very new to me and my wife. I really didn't know which model or options but ended up choosing the 24" 2.93GHz with a GT 130 video card, and, wireless mouse and keyboard. I then started reading through these forums to gather information and noticed that maybe the wireless mouse and keyboard may not be a good choice right now. My wife will be using it mostly while I'm at work and worried if there are disconnect problems she will probably just go back to her PC. I want this to be a very possitive experience for her from the start. Can any of you recommend settings, hints, tips to get me going, especially with the wireless mouse and keyboard.
Thanks,
Tom

  • New iMac on the way - need reassurance!

Wow! I just found this forum and I'm dumbfounded. I finally decided to go with an Apple product after reading all of the glowing reviews and references to "life beyond the PC". I have a new iMac 24 on the way and holy c**p, I'm freaked. I read through some of the posts on here and think I just traded a PC problem for an iMac problem. I did not expect to see so many complicated issues with these new machines. I am not a power user at all. Some reassurance would be welcomed - big time!
    Thanks,
    Ozzie

I was in a similar situation, having purchased a 24" iMac after years of PC exclusivity. Let me tell you... you will carry an endless smile once you open up your new Mac and gaze upon its beauty. I never thought in a million years that I'd want an "all-in-one" computer - I built my last PC from the ground up. But once you open it up and set it up, you realize that it is not only a thing of beauty, but it also takes up a lot less space and just WORKS.
I admit that it took about a week to really get used to Mac OS, but most of that learning was accompanied by the thrills of realizing how much better it actually is. I was greatly impressed by the speed and usability of the OS right from the start. You will certainly not be disappointed.
If there's one negative thing, it's that I've had to purchase a number of software programs to get the machine to do all I want to do. For example, iPhoto is great at first - until I imported by entire photo library of 50,000+ photos and realize that it just slows to a crawl and is really not well-suited to very large libraries of photos. I broke down and bought the academic version of Lightroom 2(thanks to my son who is in school). Now THAT runs great on my Mac and is superb in every way (and has no problem with my large library).
I also purchased Parallels because I wanted to run Windows 7 alongside of OS X. Installation of Windows 7 with boot camp went well, and then I just pointed Parallels to my Boot Camp partition and was up in running. For those few programs that I need that have no Mac version, this is working great.
I also bought Paragon's NTFS driver because I wanted to read AND write to my NTFS external hard drives. It works seamlessly in the background, and working with NTFS volumes has been every bit as fast and easy as my Mac drive.
Finally, I purchased a MobileMe account and that has been absolutely wonderful. I can now sync my mail, contacts, calendar, iDisk, etc with my Mac, my Windows 7 in Parallels, my wife's new Macbook, and my iPhone. I guess it had some initial problems last year when it came out, but it's been working great now.
Enjoy your new Mac! I know I am!

  • New iMac on the way, how to save itunes LIB from XP HD w/o resync iPod

I have 2 iPods, my PC had massive brain ****, saved the hard drive, stuffed it in an external enclosure, waiting... for an iMac to land on my door step... using another pc to try and keep iPod's charged, and Itunes wants to erase and re-sync the device. Can I save my licenses as well as the audio cd's I have ripped (and own), and iTunes library from my old hard drive? It seems even the loner XP machine on the external drive won't let me access the admin's doc's and settings...

If you have an ipod, connecting it to the PC should load the ratings back

  • I'd copied some pictures from a PC to a folder in Finder in my new iMac. The 'Date Created' in iMac is not the same as the 'Date Created' in the PC. Why? Is there a way to fix that?

View Menu -> Sort Photos is a good way to start.
    Some organising possibilities in iPhoto:
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums extensively. I title the pics broadly.
    I keyword on a
    Who
    What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 50k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a  typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
    File -> New Smart Album
    set it to 'All"
    title contains Seattle
    keyword is mountain
    keyword is snow
    rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
    New Smart Album
    Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
    Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John  to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.

Sorry to reopen an old post, but I've just purchased a 2nd hand late-2013 iMac (or so thats what the seller said).
I'm always sceptical though, and just wanted to know if there is a way to check if my iMac is indeed the late-2013 model that included Haswell?
I've attached screenshots of the About This Mac section hoping it may help shed some light.
Thank you in advance for your help!
PS - I can't compare to the iMac specs link you posted above because its now showing the late-2014 models.

A PC can have more issues connecting than a Mac.
But it really should not matter.. so just try it in situ.. press and hold the reset.. once it starts up, it will return to default IP, 10.0.1.1 the PC should then be able to find it via the airport utility.
If not drag it over to the Mac and plug in there by ethernet.. or since it is a laptop, really should not be that difficult to drag the Laptop and plug it into the TC.
Important thing is to get access to the TC.
The Mac if it is running lion, then you MUST download and install 5.6 airport utility to do anything useful.

  • I've forgotten my Wi-Fi password for a network set-up years ago and am trying to include a new iMac on the same network. How can I do this?

I've forgotten my wi-fi password for a home network set-up years ago on a Powerbook. I'm now trying to add a new iMac to the same network so I can have 2 hooked up. How can I retrieve my password for the network I created or can I set-up a new one? I did try the latter, but it didn't seem to work on the new iMac for some reason. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

    HI, Welcome to the Forums...
The password may be stored in your keychain on the system you set up the original PowerBook.
Run KeyChain access in the utilities filder and see if you have a Airport base station password entry, from this you can reveal the password.
    Regards,
    Shawn
