New iMac plan...look OK?

I currently have an early 2008 24" iMac.
I am upgrading to a BTO 27" iMac that should be shipping shortly - except for memory (stock 4GB only), it has the top available specs including 3.4Ghz quad core i7 with 2TG HD and 256GB SSD and 2GB graphics card.
Here is my deployment plan: would appreciate any comments on if this looks OK or could be improved in any way:
Confirm correct configuration, mainly that the OS (Lion) is on SSD (this iMac is supposed to be configured with OS on the SSD). Anything else to check (do I need to check latest EFI, or should that be safe to assume?)
Boot from DVD with memtest86 to confirm stock iMAC and its 4GB RAM is OK. I was planning to run for 24 hours.
Replace stock 4GB iMAC ram (2x2GB) with 16GB Samsung OEM RAM from ordered from OWC (4x4GB).
Re-run memtest86 with new RAM for another 24 hours. (I hope the originally-reported memory problems with 2010 iMacs and earlier 2011 iMacs have been fixed by now; haven't seen any recent issues reported when using OWC Samsung OEM RAM).
Partition 256SSD with bootcamp to run Win7 (see next step for partition size).
Win7 partition size=55GB. Don't criticize this value without evidence. MS support says min. required disk size for Win7 is 20GB (for 64bit). I will only run one main program on Windows (plus a couple other programs for occassional use, like Chrome and Adobe Reader). Even allowing for some extra space for SSD inefficiencies, I can't see how this value (55GB) would be too small. So if you disagree, please don't bother commenting WITHOUT SOME KIND OF EVIDENCE.
Install Win7 on its SSD partition and make sure all runs OK.
2TB hard disk will be for Lion only (can't see a need for another partition usable by Windows, so I wasn't therefore planning on adding any FAT or NTFS partition) - if you think I SHOULD add a partition for Windows on the HD, please advise.
Move my Lion home dir to 2TB hard disk using Preferences settings.
Put a small user data directory on SSD to store things I want fast access to (maybe my iTunes library, and certainly a temporary Aperture library for initial storage of new projects that I work on [after initial processing on the SSD library, these projects will be exported and then imported into main Aperture library on 2TB hard drive).
Also need to copy over user data and copy over (or re-install) applications from old iMAC: never did that before, so I don't know if Apple has any good tools for that or not...can anyone advise?
Well, thats all I can think of for now, any comments??
Thanks,
Colin.

Add this to your reading list: Pondini's Setup New Mac guide. There's no reason to confirm the setup or run memtest (Rember) on a new machine. Follow the setup guide steps and after migrating from your 24" iMac, then move stuff to the HD. Once all of that's done, then set it up for Boot Camp. I'll leave those details for you, since I don't do windoze.

  • New iMac looks for old Mac tower

I purchased a new iMac recently and used Migration Assistant to move my Documents folder over from my old G5 Tower. To the best of my memory, I did not use Migration Assistant to move system files or applications over to the iMac.
Once I thought I had everything configured just right, 3 things occured where the new iMac was looking for the old G5 Tower:
    (1) at startup, a dialog twice appeared, indicating that the old G5 could not be found. I used the Accounts/Log In Items to disable start up items that were "unidentified." First problem solved.
    (2) When I try to print, the iMac looks for my old G5 when I first try to access a pulldown menu in the print dialog window, and after quite awhile an alert message appears indicating that the G5 server is unavailable. I've tried deleting all installed printers and then reinstalling them, to no avail.
    (3) In my folder windows, under the Places list, there is a favorite folder that is repeated twice, one that links to the "04_FT" folder on the new iMac, and an identically named item that does not function as a link (but a folder with this name did live on the old G5) and I'm unable to remove it from the list. When I Control click on it, the only option I get is to "Open Sidebar Preferences."
I suspect that both (2) and (3) are similar "ghost" references back to the old G5, but I don't know how to remove them.
I would very much appreciate any help or suggestions that the iMac community might have to offer.

I would recommend starting over and instead of using Migration Assistant this time using Setup Assistant. They are cousins, similar but different. First SA is more reliable and second it will not create a second user account. Because you are migrating from a PPC machine I would migrate everything EXCEPT applications. You should manually install your apps, this will give you the opportunity to udate the ones that need it and I'm sure there are many. You may even apps that won't run on Intel based machines so why migrate them at all? You can use the Setup Assistant tips beginning at "Second chance...." You can either restore from your old machine or from one of it's backups. I think you'll see it's a pretty clean process, something you passed over (I'm not sure why) when  you turned on the new iMac for the first time.

  • Migrating Slot Loading iMac Power PC G3  Mac OS 10.4 to new iMac

My 10 year old iMac has been taking way too long to start up and has been shutting down by it's self. Made the mistake of trying to do a complete back up (instead of an incremental back up) on my last back up, When that completely erased my back up drive and then failed to complete the back up, it left me with me with no back up to the drive in the iMac, I realized that I would have to actually spend money and get a new 21" iMac.
I'm just starting to figure out that the new Intel based iMac may not be able to use or read all my Power PC files. And that maybe a straight migration may not work. Here is what I have done so far.
I downloaded the "A Basic Guide to Migrating to Intel Macs". From Discussions.
I managed to download my iPhoto library to an external drive.
I tried to down load my iTunes library to an external Hard drive, but the iMac shut down in the middle of the download.
My external drive has a Fire wire 400 and Fire wire 800 input.
The old iMac has Fire Wire 400 input, the new iMac had fire wire 800 input.
I'm going to get a Fire wire 400 to Fire wire 800 cable, and maybe a fire wire 800 to 800 cable.
Here is what I would like to Migrate, in order of importance.
    1.Photos
    2.iTunes music.
    3.Address Book
    4.Pages and Word documents
Anything else I could work around or live without.
Any hints or suggestions? Should I transfer cookies?
If I cannot transfer the files from the old iMac to the new, I'm considering taking out the hard drive from the old iMac and putting into an putting it in an external drive case, then trying to download from that. What do you think?

    A Brody;
I actually downloaded the tips earlier. That's where I found out that migrating from the Motorola Power PS chip to the newer Intel chips was not going to be easy.
Meanwhile my 10 year old iMac finally died. I tried to vacuum the inside in hopes that maybe dust was causing start up problems. When I put it back together it would not start at all. Went to plan "B" by tearing it apart again and removing the hard drive. I put it in the HD enclosure that was holding the original iMac 10 gig hard drive that I had pulled out years ago.
When I plugged it in to the new imac, it looked like everything was there. I copied photos, itunes music and all the personal files I could find.
Now I need to see if it possible to transfer play lists and book marks.
From the article I can see where to find the files I need to transfer. I can see dragging the files to the new iMac desktop. But once it get it to the desk top, how can I get the information imported to where it needs to go? Instructions are not clear on that.
The instructions say start the old mac in target disc mode, but of course the brains have been removed from the old iMac and is now a 200 gig external drive with questionable life expectancy.
    Thanks.

  • Cannot find idvd only new iMac

cannot find idvd on my new imac, have looked in apps.

    Good question, shame it's gone.
It's possible to re-install it if you've got a Snow Leopard back-up, although I haven't tried it myself:

  • My new iMac has recently had OSX Lion installed on it and now when I start the machine it looks like its updating something every time, and the wireless doesn't work. So I restart and everything is OK - until I have to start up again the next time?

My new iMac has recently had OSX Lion installed on it and now when I start the machine it looks like its updating something every time, and the wireless doesn't work. So I restart and everything is OK - until I have to start up again the next time - then I have to repeat this again! Any help appreciated.

I've been having the same issue, but have just discovered something on my own that hasn't been pointed out in any of the forums I've visited.  In what I thought would be a vain attempt to help myself, I went to System Preferences, Users & Groups, and then clicked on Login Items.  I discovered that one of the Items that was listed to open automatically upon login was iTunes Helper and that there was an exclamation point beside it indicating that it was incompatible.  I simply deleted that item and now I don't have the situation you described and my wireless is connected.  Hope this helps!

  • I have a new iMac and would like to buy a cheap version of Photoshop to create a simple flyer.  If I look on ebay or similar, what version do I require?

I have a new iMac and would like to buy a cheap legal version of Photoshop to create a simple flyer.  If I look on ebay or similar, what version do I require?
I understand that Photoshop 5 is not compatible?
I used to use CS5 at work which was very good, doing a little reserach it appears as if this suite has been replaced by a monthly 'cloud' charge which for me as a basic home user is unnecessary.
    Appreciate any help.

    Hello Simonlala;
Anyone that buys an iMac should not have to buy "cheap".  it's like putting "retread tires" on a brand new Farrari! Ugh!
To find a cheap version of PS is to locate an obsolete version only?  Software surplus business may have some or check the obituary columns to see if any Photographers or Gaphic Designers have left some things behind?
Some options...enroll in a community college Multimedia class and you will not only have access to Photoshop, you'll have access to much more software for the price of the course.  It will also qualify you as a student and you can get a discounted rate on the Adobe Creative Cloud subscription as well.
If you are only making "simple flyers" would not MS Word or OpenOffice software do the job for you?  There are applications for that purpose and Photoshop is not the only way to skin this cat!  Or you can always buy a box of Crayola's and make a pamphlet that way?
And as a bonus, you may learn something from the course you enroll in.
I am a student and subscribe to Adobe Creative Cloud...it's reasonable for my purposes for now.

  • I am planning on getting a new IMAC will my old software work on the new mac

I am planning on buying a IMAC so will I have to replace all my software that is on my G4 running 10.5.8 ?

Not ALL of your software, but likely some of it. Right click on an application and click "Get Info." Next to "Kind:" if it says Power PC, it will not work on a new iMac.

  • Has anyone had any luck returning there iMac w/ Lion? I couldn't even reconnect back to the iternet tonight w/o restarting my new iMac....  Looks like folks have been having this problem for months

Has anyone had any luck returning their iMac w/ Lion? I couldn't even reconnect back to the iternet tonight w/o restarting my new iMac....  Looks like folks have been having this problem for months & months .. The Apple tech told me that all I could do is wait for Apple to come up with a fix... Got a new router this week so that isnt' it.  Would I be better off w/o this until Apple gets their act together?  I downloaded the combo update 10.7.3 & it helped for about a day...  yesterday I still had to manually reset the connection but now it's resorting back to disconnectiong w/o fully going into sleep mode first.  Sorry to say this is a major lemon.  Help!

Seems unfair... I thought I was probalby having a router problem...  got a new router this week. Thst's when we realized we have a computer problem.  My next door nieghbor got zero sleep staying up all night while trying to help us figure out what the problem could be. He said if it were him he would have returned the iMac / Lion.  Got the new iMac w/ Lion for Christmas but didn't realize until this week that Apple is the problem....  Hard to believe that Apple just has kept on selling this like ... oh  No problem!  Can't stay on the internet... but will sell you another one today!  I'm getting mad...  It's not every day we spend that kind of money on a computer .  & ALL they can give us is that LOUSY Lion combo update.  I can't even stay connected long enough to make a vitamin order with Puritan's Pride...  & then the disconnection wipes out my cart... so I have to  start over. When are they going to fix this!   'Not feeling very positive'.  I feel like Apple KNOWINGLY sold my husband a defective... system.  14 days... oh please...

  • Reversed type looks "bold" on new iMac

I just bought a new iMac (specs below) and immediately noticed that reversed type (white type on dark background) in Safari and Firefox definitely looks "bold" for a lack of a better word. This is in comparison to the 3 CRT monitors around our home/office.
This is my first LCD so I can't compare it to another but I can't say that I've noticed this weirdness on any LCD I've ever seen including my wife's Powerbook.
It could be related to the way these browsers render reversed fonts because reversed fonts embeded in images (photoshop, jpgs, etc) look as you would expect. I suppose it could also be related to recent iMac graphic card issues?
Anyone else notice this bold reversed type effect on the new iMac? or any other LCD for that matter.
    Thanks.

I don't think it has anything to do with the LCD, but I've definitely seen similar weird effects that seem to be related to "font smoothing." Try fiddling with the settings at the bottom of System Preferences > Appearance. Also, the (freeware) TinkerTool.app from www.bresink.com provides a wider range of control on minimum smoothed font size. (IMO, all of Bresink's products are A++ quality software.)
Fonts drive me nuts, but I understand that Leopard may change things -- hopefully, for the better.
    Looby

  • I am looking to buy a new iMac....help please.

I am looking to buy a new iMac, and I started a search on Craigslist for fun, and it seems as if some people have some really good deals on the model mb325ll/a. It is the 2.8 ghz version with 2 gigs of ram and a 320gb hard drive.
This is not a model sold in the Apple Retail store, so I am a little hesitant, but the guy said it is the business model. Is this true?
What kind of warranty would it come with if I am an individual user and not a business? Do I miss out on anything? Please give any advice you may have. Thanks.

There is no such thing as a "business" Mac, versus one for an individual consumers. You should look at this list, and find your model and complete specifications.
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/index-imac.html
Based on the information you provided, it sounds like this one
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/stats/imac-core-2-duo-2.8-24-inch-alu minum-early-2008-penryn-specs.html
which is last year's (early 2008) model, not the current model (early 2009).
If it is being sold as used, the standard warranty is in effect for one year after its original sale. If it is being sold as new, the standard warranty is for one year. You can check the warranty status using the iMac's serial number.
You can also compare the price to the same iMac model on Apple's +Special Deals+ (refurb) page. It happens to be available currently as a refurb, if this is the same model.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/FB325LL/A?mco=MjE0NDk5Mw
Apple certified refurbished Macs have the same warranty as new. From my experience, they look and operate like new.

It may be that if you already bought the iPad versions using your iTunes account, you get a discount on the Mac versions? (That's just a guess - it applies with FileMaker, but I don't know if it does with iWork).
There is no discount for one version of the iWork apps due to owning the other version.

This is what the font turns it into (it's supposed to say Chrysler Building & New York Public Library).  The font came with Pages which is what I'm working in.  It worked before but isn't now.
