New imac plz help

today i got my new imac delivered... 320GB.. how come i had 280GB only is that normal? ps: i had tiger installed and installed leopard from the disk.. is there any utility to use to check what's using the hard drive...
ps: i am quite familiar with tiger (user for 3 years)

Hi Clive Barbara!
There have been other threads, but just last night I was looking at the Samsung (hard drive manufacturer) website and copied their answer from a FAQ. You might find it's more than you wanted to know, but:
"The Capacity of the Drive Is About 8% Lower than What It Should Be
This is because of the dual meaning of the word "gigabyte," depending on whether it's calculated in binary (base-2) or decimal (base-10) mathematics. A gigabyte means 109 (1,000,000,000) bytes. A gigabyte also means 230 (1,073,741,824) bytes.
An 80-gigabyte hard drive has a capacity of 80 billion bytes.  Since we think in terms of base-10, when we say "gigabyte" we mean the decimal gigabyte. A computer's architecture is designed on powers of two, so when a computer says "gigabyte," it means the binary gigabyte.
Therefore, an operating system may display the capacity of an 80-gigabyte hard drive as 74.5 gigabytes. There will appear to be 7.4 percent fewer gigabytes, but each is also 7.4 percent larger.
In much the same way that a tree is the same size whether its height is said to be 25 feet or 8.2 meters, 80 decimal gigabytes and 74.5 binary gigabytes both refer to exactly the same capacity, 80,000,000,000 bytes."
Above quoted from the Samsung website.

  • Problem with brand new Imac, please help

I was suggested that it would be best for me to post this topic here in this forum.
Hi I am new to Mac, I had just gotten my 17" imac isight last week, for the most part i am very happy with it. But last night I was having some troubles with it. I had been online and was using Firefox as my browser....I went on one website and all of a sudden my mac froze up, the cursor changed to a spinning colored pinwheel and i couldn't click out of the page at all. In the upper right hand corner of the webpage which i didn't notice when i originally went on it was a message saying "you've been owned noobie"....my only guess was that this person's page had been hacked.
I tried manually shutting down the imac, when it came back on I could not do anything. Firefox and Safari kept shutting down, and even when i tried going into System Peferences it kept closing on me. I tried shutting down at one point and the computer seemed like it was still on, the light in the lower right hand corner was going in and out. I tried starting up again and could not get onto the desktop, it was stuck on the blue screen. I tried holding the power button down in the back for a few seconds and i took the power cord out from the back for 30 seconds, after that it seemed to work fine.
I am afraid that this may happen again, right now everything seems fine....has anyone else experienced this issue or has any insight on it? Is it a hardware problem or simply a bad webpage?
I appreciate any help that you guys can give me!

  • Getting new iMac, need help transferring iPhone,

Okay, I've been using my iPhone with my main PC since I've had it. A few months ago, I started having problems with it (my PC), and it became very unstable. I haven't synced my iPhone in 3-4 months. Mainly because it was so unstable...most of the time, it wouldn't even boot into Windows. In the meantime, I've just been using my PowerBook, and Aspire One for all my computer needs.
So I ordered one of the new iMac 24's last week to replace my PC, and it will be here tomorrow. Today, I've been backing up my PC, with an external HDD, in Safe Mode. Since that's the only way I can get into Windows now. I've copied over all the folders I used for my iPhone...like for photos, custom ringtones, etc. And copied over the iTunes folder. But unfortunately, I cannot sync the iPhone in Safe Mode. So all the stuff in the iTunes folder is at least 3-4 months old. And I've bought music and apps from iTunes on the phone since then, as well as added contacts, taken pics, etc.
My question is, when I sync up the iPhone on my new iMac...will I lose everything that's been added to the iPhone since the last time I did a sync? Is there anyway to get it transferred? Or at least get my purchased music/apps from the iPhone to iTunes on the new machine? I can email the pics I've taken, and copy down the added contacts if need be...my main concern is the music/apps I've purchased on the iPhone.
Thanks for any help you can provide...and hopefully I didn't make that too confusing.

iTunes includes an option to transfer iTunes content from an iPod or iPhone that was purchased from the iTunes store, but this is for iTunes content that was purchased from the iTunes store only.
First you need to authorize your new Mac with your iTunes account with iTunes.
After doing so, with your iPhone connected and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone.
Before syncing contact info with the Address Book and calendar events with iCal on your new Mac, enter one contact in the Address Book and one calendar event in iCal on your new Mac. Make these up if needed, which can be deleted later. This will provide a merge prompt when syncing contact info and calendar events with the Address Book and iCal on your new Mac, which you want to select.
Photos captured by your iPhone are not included with the iTunes sync process, except for being included with your iPhone's backup, which is the first step during the sync process. If you will be using iPhoto for storing photos on your new Mac, you can use iPhoto for importing these photos from your iPhone. Any photos transferred to your iPhone from your PC via the iTunes sync process must be transferred from your PC to your new Mac into iPhoto.
If all 3rd party apps available on your iPhone are not transferred to your iTunes library on your new Mac, you can re-download the apps with iTunes on your new Mac. You will not be charged again for any purchased apps as long as you use the same iTunes account to re-download the apps that was used to purchase the apps originally.

  • How to transer mboxes I set up from old G4 to new iMac?  Help!

To organize my email, I had set up mailboxes for each client and stored messages there. I got a new iMac. I want to transfer these boxes from my G4. I copied an mbox and sent it as an attachment by email to new computer. I put it on desktop. But when I try to import, it says "No valid mail for OS X were found." The G4 is running 10.3.9. So I am not sure what to do. I tried just manually placing it in the mailbox in library but that did not work either. Any ideas?

Please, describe more accurately what it is exactly that you’re trying to do. In particular, what do you mean by “an mbox”? Are you trying to import a standard mbox file, or an .mbox folder (i.e. a Mail 1.x mailbox, which appears as a file in Mac OS X 10.3, but is something entirely different)?
Also, pay attention to the instructions that Mail displays when choosing Mail for Mac OS X as the data format. In the next step, Mail wants you to select the folder that contains the mailboxes to be imported (i.e. the folder where the .mbox folders to be imported reside), not the .mbox folders themselves. If you select the wrong folder, Mail says “No valid Mail for Mac OS X files were found” because it cannot find any .mbox folders within the folder you’re selecting.
And if what you’re trying to import is a standard mbox file (e.g. the mbox file within the .mbox package where Mail 1.x stores the actual messages), you must choose Other as the data format, not Mail for Mac OS X.

  • New iMac today HELP

I just set up my new imac
with version 10.6.2 and would like to know should i install all the 13 update via software installer or do the combo 10.6.3?

HI and congrats on your new iMac!
Definitely the v10.6.3 Combo Update. It includes fixes that were not included in the v10.6.3 update.
Be aware. This update is rather large, around 784MB and even on a high speed internet connection can take fifteen to twenty minutes.
Your iMac may restart several times. Don't worry! Just let your iMac do it's job
After the installation is finished, as with any Mac OS X software update, repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Mac to Windows ?'s - brand new iMac owner,  Help please...

I am proud brand new 24” iMac owner (early Christmas present to myself), the first time I ever used a Mac was when I turned mine on right out of the box 2 days ago. I will be using my iMac mainly for basic Music/Pictures/Videos stuff like browse the web, downloading and to maintain my iphone and ipods.
I am having some trouble organizing all of my media about 300gb worth, I am so used to Windows and how I had everything set up and organized that my iMac feels out of control. Any suggestions on organization ideas/strategies would be very appreciated.
If someone would be so kind to please help me along with these Windows to Mac questions…..
I will gladly appreciate any and all feedback!
    Thanks in advance
    1.) Internet Security –
Q - I frequently download torrents and use Limwire. What is recommended for a Mac and are there any free anti-virus programs that work good?
True or False? – I have read that since there are no viruses made for Mac that this is not needed , unless you often share with a Windows computer or something along those lines….
    2.) Windows Defrag/Disk Cleanup –
Q - Is this necessary for a Mac, if so does Mac have a similar process to cleanup unused space on the hard drive?
A – I have read that it is not necessary for a Mac, but some users still prefer to do disk cleanup (Any recommended disk cleanup programs? Preferably free).
    3.) Installing programs on a Mac –
Q - Can I mess this up, or is it self explanatory like Windows?
A – I think I have figured this out. I have successfully installed MS Office, Adobe Premium CS3, etc… BUT in Applications in the finder, once the download is complete can I have just the App there or should I leave the whole folder and its downloaded contents? What I mean is if I were to delete the other misc downloaded files inside the folder would the program still run correctly?
Im not sure how to make myself clear on this, so if its way too confusing I can live with a few extra folders….
    4.) Additional Programs –
Q - Are there any “must have” programs that do not come standard on an iMac?
FYI – I have brand new MS office, full Adobe Premium CS3, Toast, and Transmission torrent dloader (I think that’s what it is called)
    5.) iTunes –
Q - Is it possible to import your iTunes library from Windows to a Mac?
    - I think I am actually going to re-do my whole library manually, BUT can I somehow get all my playlists from my Windows laptop to my iMac?
    6.) Folder Icons -
Q - On Windows you can change the basic blank folder or icon to a different icon or picture (thumbnail view), is this customizable on a Mac also?
    - So far its looking like it is not possible… The only customization I can seem to do is to “label” with a color. I would really like to be able to customize that basic blue folder, any suggestions?
    7.) Application Task Manager (Ctrl/Alt/Del) -
Q - Does Mac have a similar option if not, how can I view all current applications running on my iMac?
Thanks again, its such a relief to have a community like this

    1. ClamXAV is the only free anti-virus software for the Mac.
    2. OS X defrags all files under 20 MBs on the fly. Unless you have a lot of very large files that undergo frequent changes, there's little need to defragment the drive. For disk repair and other maintenance see my FAQ at the end of this post.
    3. Programs are installed on a Mac much the same as on Windows. Some use installers while some you can just drag from the download file to the Applications folder.
    4. There are thousands of programs. What's one person's must have is another's must not. Mac software can be found for download at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
    5. Yes. See Macworld - How to transfer iTunes libraries between PC and Mac.
    6. Yes. You can download sets of replacement icons from many different sites. Or you can copy an image onto the clipboard (COMMAND-C) then select the folder you wish to change, press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. You will see the icon in the top left corner. Click on the image to select it then press COMMAND-V to paste the image in the clipboard. You now have a new folder icon. You can do this for files as well. CAVEAT: Not a good idea to change any OS X system folders. Although you can the next time you upgrade the OS the custom icons will likely disappear. You will then have to redo them. There are certain utilities that can change system icons as well.
    7. Yes. There are two different ones. The Application Switcher - press COMMAND-TAB to cycle through running applications. The Task Manager - press COMMAND-OPTION-ESC. The Task Manager can only be used to force quit running applications. If you want to view running applications then use the Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.

  • Cannot get PC to print through my new iMac, Please help!

I am new to the Apple operating system and computers. Just purchased a 20" iMac and I am having issues getting my laptop PCs to print. The printer is a HP Officejet 7310 All in One and is hooked up via usb to the iMac. The iMac prints no problem. I installed Bonjour on my PC and it located the printer no problem. I set it up and it is now available in my printer list. I set it as a default and try to print a test page and nothing happens. Printer sharing is turned on on the iMac and I have disabled the firewall completely on the PC. Any thoughts on what I might be missing?

    Thanks for all the help!

  • New iMac boot help

So I bought the 2.66GHz, 20-inch iMac yesterday from a JB Hi-Fi outlet and got the RAM upgraded from 2 to 4 gig which was performed in store and seemed fine. When I got the computer home, set it up according to the user manual (just to be sure) and switched it on I got the boot tone, the Apple logo and the load symbol. It stayed this way for a good hour and a half.
On online advice I restarted the Mac and inserted the back-up disc that came with it. The Install OS applicaiton came up and allowed me to check and install the first disc after which it stated that it needed to restart and to have the second disc ready when it did so. After a couple of minutes it turned to the +grey screen of death+ and remained that way. Now when I (manually) restart it all I can get is the option to install the first disc (which it has swallowed).
What I want to know is, is this the fault of the hardware, the store, the guy who installed the RAM, me for turning it on etc. and what the best action to take would be? Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello,
Is this JB Hi-Fi outlet Apple certified? Is it possible this is a refurbished machine?
Try running the *Apple Hardware Test*: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
It's possible the RAM that was installed, wasn't installed properly. Go here for help..
    http://www.tuaw.com/2006/01/27/intel-imac-easiest-ram-install-ever/
*You can try ejecting the disk using Firmware:*
To eject a disc using firmware:
    Restart the computer.
When you hear the startup sound, press and hold the Command-Option-O-F keys. (The Command key has an Apple on it.)
Release the keys when you see a white welcome screen.
    At the prompt, type:
    eject cd
Press Return, then wait a few seconds. The disc drive should eject the disc, and "ok" appears on the screen when the action is complete.
    Type:
    mac-boot
    Press Return.
Your computer starts up normally and you see the familiar Mac OS X desktop.
If the iMac continues to give you problems, you should definitely take it back, get your money back and buy from an Apple store, or an Apple reseller. Make certain they are Apple Certified.

  • SAP HR new joining, plz help!!!

    Hello Experts,
I'm new in SAP HR, have just shifted career from HR Dept. to SAP HR Consulting Dept (I work for ERP Services Comp.). Over the last 3 months, I've spent fulltime on self-research on SAP HR but it is such harsh work when I don't have any guidline or material. Could any of you give me some suggestion of the approach steps to get to know SAP HR?
Btw, I'm reading the SAP HR serial tutorials of appx. 30 pdf files (HR505, HR100...) but it is a little bit theorical and i can't figure out about the acctual job (the IMG invironment? real implementing steps?...)
Points are awarded for helpful guidline and thanks in advance.
    Best regards,
    Huynh Thanh

    Hi Huynh,
As You worked domain, I hope you are good in Business Process in HR.  First do configuration for Enterprise Structure and Personnel Structures. If possible get one bbp from some of your network, understand that and start configuration accordngly.
This would be good rather than reading all mentioned pdf files.

  • Changin 2 new computer can i move across al info 2 my new computer plz help

im on xp my old computer has got a virus on it and i was wondering can i access it through safe mode some how and copy all my information across to a usb or external harddrive im not bothered abwt the music as i can replace tht but i cant fucntion without my contacts and calender my txt messages and etc please help me if i sync to a new comp it will delete all my old info im so confused dont kwn wat to do

    Welcome to the discussions,
A manual backup will help. Here's how to:
Make sure your computer is authorized in iTunes. Disable autosync in itunes, connect your phone, right click on it in the device list and choose backup.
This will save data, pictures taken with the phone and settings to itunes.
See what's included in this backup here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
Transfer your purchases the same way to copy all apps and bought media from the Store to your computer.
Set up at least one contact and event on your computer to be able the merge your calendars and contacts after your phone got wiped during the first sync.
The rest of the data can be restored from the backup you made.
How to back up and restore: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
How to download apps for free again: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there, but not supported by Apple, see this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0
After that, don't forget to include iTunes into your backup routine: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1382

I know that this message indicates that Oracle wants to reuse a redo log file, but
the current checkpoint position is still in that log. In this case, Oracle must
wait until the checkpoint position passes that log. Because the
incremental checkpoint target never lags the current log tail by more than 90%
of the smallest log file size, this situation may be encountered :
    1-if DBWR writes too slowly,
    or
2-if a log switch happens before the log is completely full,
    or
3-if log file sizes are too small.
    I read some posts in this forum regarding this error but sincerly i don't know how to find the exact cause of this error? Maybe Should I add new redo files or one new redo group? I don't know how to resolve it :( ;;;
    such as I have 6 redo files 3 of them 5MB size and the others 3 files 10MB size ;
    Thank you,

Make DBWR write more aggressively - as you are on 9i the parameter I would use is FAST_START_MTTR_TARGET=(how long you want recovery to take in seconds), the lower that number, the more aggressively DBWR has to write to keep up with the target, the advantage of this is that by the time LGWR comes to overwrite the redo log file, the chances are that DBWR has already written the "high scn#" (and beyond) from the checkpoint q.
-- This disadvantage is that you will get more I/O to your disks.
    2. Create more redo log file groups - this will give DBWR more time to write before LGWR tries to overwrite a particular redolog file, again the chances are that the extra (6th) or (7th) group will give CKPT enough time to completely checkpoint beyond the "highest scn#" before that group is again required..
Which one to go for.. well that's up to you and your setup, if you have an I/O bound system then 2. would be better for you, as 1. will just increase your I/O problem, however if physical space is an issue and I/O isn't then 1. might be better (with the added advantage that instance recovery will also be faster).
Sorry for the training session, but as with everything to do with Oracle, there is rarely one solution that apply to everyone...

  • How to restore machine using a TM backup on a usb hard drive from older imac to a brand new iMac?

My imac (the one that had a superdrive in it), had a broken superdrive and was sent for repair. Whilst being "repaired" the screen was broken. I now have a brand new imac albeit without a dvd drive. My question is how to I restore my the old TM back up which had been made to an external usb hard drive to the new imac. Help files say that I should not restore from a TM file to a different machine and that I should use migration assistant. Whilst I can see the external usb drive in TM it is not being recognised in Migration assistant when I click on back up from a TM backup on another machine or disk.
    Any ideas?
Just noticed that this new machine is running OSX 10.8.4  the broken imac was on mavericks

This is very simple first run Software Update on the new machine and get your machine upgraded to the most recent version of Mountain Lion 10.8.5. Install all other software updates Apple recommends in Software Update. Then care fully read Pondini's guide on using Migration Assistant located at:
    http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html
Your migrated data will be in a new account, to access it log into the new account.
Also DO NOT repeat DO NOTuse Wi-Fi to migrate data, if your TM backup drive uses USB, then connect it via USB and follow the on-screen instructions as described in Pondini's guide.
