New iMac power cable problem

I have just bought a new iMac 21.5" and have a problem with the ac cable. I cant fit it all the way into the socket so that the circularplastic is flush against the back of the monitor. It goes about halfway, clicks into place but doesnt feel completely secure and wont go further in. Ive tried forcing but dont want to damage the machine. It just wont fit in correctly. The machine was receiving power even though the plug wasnt fully in. Is this a common problem with iMacs?

No, but if it concerns you, that little circular piece of plastic will pop off if you press on it hard enough. It's purely cosmetic in nature. As you can clearly see from looking at the "business end" of the plug, it's just your bog standard AC cable. You can probably get a dozen of them for a few bucks just about anywhere.
So you can either just pop that little plastic shield off, let it slide freely on the cable, or you can just use any other spare AC cables you may have around. There is absolutely nothing special about them. They're just three wires running along a plastic tube. Do not feel particularly beholden to any one cable.
If you for some reason spend a lot of time looking at the back end of your iMac, you can always call Apple to get a replacement cable with the little shield. Odds are, they will put up no resistance to sending you a new one. They'd likely spend more money fighting with you on the phone over it than the cable costs.

I have an iMac4.1 and my iPhoto is very slow and the thumbnails correspond to the wrong pictures.  How do I fix this? Or is my iMac too old?  Will getting a new iMac solve this problem?
I realize is only 512MB of memory but I want to make sure that a new iMac will solve this problem.  Can the new iPhoto handle 10GB or more of photos?  Or do I have to go to Picasa anyways in which case I can buy any computer to do that?

The model of Mac is not partcularly relevant, it's the version of the OS and iPhoto that matter.
iPhoto - since 2006 - is good for 250,000 images.

i have a new iMac but having problems installing final cut express 4 from old macbook pro ?

FCE was discontinued nearly 3 years ago and is no longer supported.
I don't know whether it's possible to install it on Mavericks and if you do it may not perform properly.
Final Cut pro X and iMovie are the only Apple apps that are supported.

FWIW, US/Canada plugs look like this (2 flat pins and one round ground pin) and the normal non-US ones look like the second (three round pins).

  • Hi-Fi power cable problem

Wondering if anyone else has had this problem...
I bought an iPod Hi-Fi the other day, and it seems to be working well with one small problem - the power cable. I've tried plugging it into a power strip, and directly into the wall - I've tried a number of outlets, but every time I do it, the same thing happens: it sparks when I plug it in, and it plays for a few seconds, and then stops (no power).
What's more, two of the outlets that I've tested seem to no longer work after plugging in the Hi-Fi. Now granted, I'm living in Thailand and some of the wiring in my house is a little ... strange, but I've never had this problem with any other Mac equipment at my house, or for that matter, any other appliances, including those that should be sucking up more electricity (refrigerator, etc.)
Any suggestions? I'm now stuck with a brand new Hi-Fi that I can only run on D batteries. Thanks.

I believe there is some problem inside your iPod HiFi - you have to send it for service, and do not plug to the ac charger as it will damage the iPod HiFi

  • New iMac setup assistant problems?

I have a brand new iMac literally fresh out of the box.
I am having major problems just getting through the initial setup assistant.
I didn't migrate anything this is just all from scratch.
The setup assistant is very very slow taking several minutes to recognize what I entered from the keyboard.
Screens were juxtaposed over each with the text overlapping. I can't see the question that it has the cursor in a blank field to answer to.
It gets hung in a loop asking for Cloud password info. It doesn't see what I typed in and just hangs.
A very frustrating initial experience with the new machine. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Jesse, we could tell you a million things to do, BUT...you shouldnt have to. It's a brand new Mac. Call Apple

  • Files transferred from old iMac to new iMac, permission/editing problems

I recently purchased a new iMac this month because my old one was no longer working, I can't keep it on for more than 2 minutes.
I always used Time Machine to back up my files, when I transferred all my files to my new iMac I was given alot of trouble with the permissions problem. I got the files to open by copying the folders to the desktop but, for example, all my iTunes music cannot be edited. I get alot of error messages about not being able to save iTunes library because I don't have write permissions.
How do I authenticate the files/folders so I don't have this problem?
Old iMac was purchased in Dec 2007, it has Leopard OS.

If you want your new computer to be very much like your old, during the startup you would choose to migrate before choosing to create a new user. Then, the migration assistant creates the same user on the new computer. Did you do that?
    Or did you do this:
If you first create a new user with the same name as the old one you want to migrate, Migration Assistant won't let you migrate as that username since it already exists.
You could create a new user that you will later use as an admin/test account. Then, while logged into the new account, delete the old account and use the Migration Assistant in the Utilities folder to Migrate from your Time Machine backup--it should create a new user with the old user info.
However, if you didn't get any errors from Migration Assistant, I'm not sure why the file permissions are askew.

  • New iMac 27" - Airport Problems

My new 27" iMac arrived today! I can connect to my network via ethernet (as well as the internet). However as soon as I switch Airport on, the screen goes grey and asks me to reboot.
I have reinstalled OSX twice, and check permissions, also have up applied all the software updates available.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
*"the screen goes grey and asks me to reboot"*
    That called a kernel panic.
    Try a different Airport channel.
Open AirPort Utility, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder on a computer using Mac OS X.
Select the device you’re setting up, and then click Manual Setup. Enter the base station password if necessary
Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
Choose a new channel from the Channel pop-up menu.
    Try deleting this file.
    com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
    MacintoshHD/Library/Preferences/System Configuration.
Move that file to the Trash and restart your Mac.
Try restarting with only necessary externals, ie; mouse and keyboard.
Check to make sure your ethernet cable is connecting properly. If you are using a cable modem, disconnect it from the power source for 20 seconds and reconnect. Sometimes that helps.
If you are using a router, check the vendor site to make it's 10.6 compatible.

  • Can I buy iMac power cables for the UK?

I am moving to the UK from the US and I have several Apple products. I would like to know if I can buy a replacement cable for each of them (iMac, MacBook Pro, Apple TV, MacBook Air) that will fit into a UK power plug. All are fairly recent purchases (less than 2 years old) and I don't want to replace them. I can fit the World converter plugs on my Ipod and iPhone chargers, but they wont fit on the laptop chargers.
    Thanks!
    john olson | mandeville, la

All you need is an UK IEC power cord for the iMac (see image) and adapters for the Macbooks and the Apple TV.
The power supply in iMacs, Macbooks and Apple TV is an auto switching power supply that will accept voltage between 100 and 240V
Any standard european IEC power cord will do, you do not have to by one from Apple, but the Apple one as a extra round plastic part that will fit snugly in the iMac. (see second image)
Using a adapter is also an option for the iMac, but they tend to fit loosely on the US plug and can be more easily disconnected than a real European cord. If you go with only adapters, make sure you get good ones that will fit tightly on the us plug.

  • Is a 2011 iMac power cable compatible with a 2013 iMac?

Just wondered if the extra plastic circle on the standard C13 cable matches up with a later iMac model.

I'm not so sure about that. I have a 2011 at home and a 2013 at work, and my recollection is that the 2013, having a much more severe dish in the back to make the thin front edges, has a pronounced slope to the power cord disk. Looking at my My 2011 right now, the disc has no slope relative to the cord. It might work, but the disc wouldn't fit right. I'll have to shut down to pull the cord and examine it!

  • IMac power button problem

I am having problems starting my iMac. The power button has to be pushed 5 or 6 times before the computer will start.

I assume because it is a 17" it has a couple of years. Sounds like the switch is breaking, but has not completely. That would require the assistance of a technician.
