New iMac-Questions for musicians/computer experts

Friends,
My primary reason for buying a new iMac has to do with home music recordings. (Especially w GarageBand, but other music programs as well.)
Spent the day trying to get things going with my brand new iMac. (Specs below).
Things went pretty well, except when I got to peripherals. So, for some of you musicians out there who might have encountered similar situations when upgrading computers/operating systems:
1) *Presonus Firebox* preamp. On my old iMac, all I would do was plug in the firewire to the computer and the preamp turned on. (Usually left the firewire plug into the preamp all the time.) Never used the AC adaptor. Apparently wasn't necessary. The cable was a 6-pin to 6-pin. (Meaning, I think, 400 to 400.)
a) Tried to get the preamp going on the "new" iMac. Used a new 6-pin, coming out of the PreSonus Firebox, to 9-pin, going into the new iMac firewire port, cable. Nothing happened. Firebox didn't turn on.
b) Thoughts? Why didn't it work? Do I need to go to the PreSonus Firebox web-page to download an updated driver that will work with +Snow Leopard+? (Been to that site and it said +Mac users do not need to do this+.)
c) This is critical for me. I don't want to by a new preamp to do my recordings.
2) *Yamaha DGX-305* keyboard/synthesizer. I've used this for many recording purposes...sole piano work, comping, effects, etc... bringing it in as either MIDI (via USB cable) or analog (headphone out to iMac audio line in). But...
a) when I tried to bring it into my new iMac (same way: USB cable for MIDI), nothing happened. Tried to record....settings were all the same as on the old Mac (i.e. to a MIDI track in GB, line in/out were correct after setting them on the computer)....pushed "record" button, played, marker/track moved, but nothing was recorded.
b) It would seem that I would have to go to the Yamaha web site to download the latest driver to make this work.
Following a visit to the HP site and a phone call, was told that HP stopped making the printer I have (about six years old) and, therefore, do not make drivers compatible with +Snow Leopard+. So, today, I purchased a brand new printer. Certainly did not think I would have to do that after buying a new computer. And wasn't particularly happy about it. Present printer works just fine.
I will be visiting the websites and calling +PreSonus Firebox+ and Yamaha tomorrow morning to inquire about workable updated drivers for +Snow Leopard+. My great fear is that either or both will say the same thing as HP: "Stopped making those models and do not have downloadable drivers" for my new computer/operating system.
If that would be the case, it would mean that the "critical" peripherals for my home music recordings would be obsolete. Effectively negating the usefulness of my brand new iMac.
*THE MAIN CONCERN:*
*I do not want to buy a new preamp, keyboard, or whatever to enable me to resume my recording efforts. I didn't sign up for that when I bought my new iMac.*
Anxiously awaiting your thoughts.
The only reason I bought a new iMac (the old one...which I will still keep, works perfectly fine, just pushed to capacity) was to make my home recording efforts easier. Meaning, less stress on the processor, more space available on the computer itself for those huge music files, and more speed with much more RAM.
But it never occurred to me that buying a new computer would require buying everything else to go with it: printer, preamp, keyboard, etc.
And, just a quick p.s. regarding GB: on the old version I have, GB2, when you double-clicked the "instrument" icon at the very left of the track, it brought up a window where you could adjust things, change instrument sound/audio font, turn monitor on/off etc. However, when I double-clicked the instrument icon on the new GB, nothing happened. It would seem this is a typical problem with updated programs. Nothing, or at least not enough, is where it used to be. A real problem for an old guy like me to re-learn everything. I'm sure I'll have to do a lot more exploring to find out how this new GarageBand works.
Thanks for any comments/suggestions. (If it weren't for the invaluable resource of Apple Discussion Forums, I wouldn't even have considered buying a new computer. At least I know you guys are here.)

• Firebox: There is a problem with the Firewire card in newer Macs - I have the same problem. It will not sync up with some interfaces (I have the Inspire) when they have no external power source. There's only two solutions: use the power adaptor, or chain it with an externally powered hard drive. After everything is up and running, it should be okay to unplug the power adaptor.
• Keyboard: The device that your computer is connected to is not the keyboard but the midi interface (which you call "cable"). You can plug any midi instrument into that, the Mac doesn't care. So you'll have to update your interface's driver, but you don't tell us what it is. If it's a yamaha intereface:
http://www.global.yamaha.com/download/usb_midi/
(And a note: Lengthy posts like yours, with a lot of talk about why you bought your computer etc., don't attract a lot of people to give you answers. A short but concise description of your problem - like what interface you are using - is a lot more helpful.)

  • Configuring 30 new IMac's for a computer lab.

I work at a technical college in the IT dept. and we just got our first ever new Apple IMac's. Is it possible to configure one computer similar to symantec ghost without having to enter personal information (credit card number and setting up .mac accounts) and so that one student account is created that they can automatically sign in with. We don't have a lot of mac experience on campus.

You don't have to create a .mac account just skip that step when you get to it.
Are you trying to give each student one account or each Mac one account?
As an aside you may like to take a look at Apple Remote Desktop (link) which allows you to control multiple Macs from one.

No it's not stealing. They have an allowance that you can share with so many computers/devices. You'll have to authorize her computer to play/use anything bought on your acct. You can do this under the Store menu at top when iTunes is open on her computer.
As far as getting it all on her computer....I think but I am not sure (because I don't use the feature) but I think if you turn on Home Sharing in iTunes it may copy the music to her computer. I don't know maybe it just streams it. If nothing else you can sign into your acct on her computer and download it all to her computer from the cloud. Not sure exactly how to go about that, I haven't had to do that yet. I wonder if once you authorize her computer and then set it up for automatic downloads (under Edit>Preferences>Store) if everything would download. Sorry I'm not much help on that.

I´d like to hook up another computer to the 24" iMac. I know there´s no hardware way since it´s integrated but maybe by using some magic box over usb or something and a bit of software?
I´m looking to use it under Windows running Bootcamp.

This is a common mistake and I highly advise against it.
1: TimeMachine saves states of changes and thus requires more room on the TM drive than the boot drive it's backing up.
2: Something happens to the TM drive, loss, theft, dropped, power surge, etc., you lose both backups.
3: The storage drive might become a portable need, with it being on the TM drive, now your increasing the risk to the TM backup that something could happen to it along with the storage drive, due to increased movement.

The people on these boards aren't Apple Support and can't do that for you. You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; ways of contacting them include clicking here and picking a method for your country, phoning AppleCare and asking for the Account Security team, and filling out and submitting this form.
They wouldn't be security questions if they could be bypassed without Apple verifying your identity.

  • New iMac Question - Rosetta & Migration Assistant

I'm getting a new 27-inch iMac in the next few days but I have a couple of questions beforehand. I still need to use some Rosetta-based apps so will I have to install Rosetta on the new 27-inch iMac or is it already pre-installed? Seems to me that I've read somewhere that Rosetta is a "custom-install" with Snow Leopard.
This leads me to the next question about the Migration Assistant. I will need to transfer my data from the old hard drive to the new 27-inch iMac. The easiest way being with the Migration Assistant. In the past, when I've bought a new Mac and right after connecting the new Mac and my old Mac together via FireWire and starting the new Mac up for the first time, I've just transferred the data right away before even setting up a new user account on the new Mac. But if I do this now and Rosetta isn't yet installed, will my old apps and related files be transferred properly?
I guess what I'm getting at is this - should I boot the new 27-inch iMac up first, then install Rosetta (if an install is needed), then set up a user account on the new 27-inch iMac and then run the Migration Assistant to transfer data from the old hard drive? Or should I just run the Migration Assistant on the very first startup of the new 27-inch iMac and transfer the data right away?
I hope this makes sense. Thanks for any help you can offer. I'm trying to plan this out properly in advance and I don't want to mess anything up.
    Gerard

I know this was long ago - a day or 2 after July 3, 2009 (purchase date of our iMac) - but here is what happened:
Connected old computer (eMac) to new iMac to start "Migration" software. Waiting for boot and recognition extremely long.
Choices came up to migrate EITHER software or files.
I swear I selected "files" but it migrated software, over an enormous time.
Takes too long to migrate, so when I discovered no files were transferred, I went to old computer to copy data to DVD and "migrate" manually.
Went through that process on eMac; DVD burned; eject DVD and take to iMac.
I "trashed" the folders from the eMac (they were not needed on the old computer).
Guess what? The DVD DID NOT burn all the folders that I told it to burn.
Data lost: Several years of tax information! Teaching files! I don't even know what else!
Best of all, after talking to a certified Apple technician who happens to be a friend, he doesn't think there is any way to recover that data.
Why in the **** would I migrate applications (is that legal?) to a new computer?! That software's FIRST focus should be to preserve DATA, also known as FILES.
I know that I made some errors in this - - ERRORS IN CONFIDENCE IN APPLE!
Can you help? Can you send me software to recover my files? Can I have it today or tomorrow? That's when I need the info for my tax filing and FAFSA applications for 2 (TWO!) children to go to college next year.

  • New iMac Retina for Premiere CC 2014

    Hi everyone,
we're ready to upgrade a couple of PCs here at the studio and I think we are probably jump over to the Mac wagon. We love the idea of getting the new Retina iMacs (maxed out) with i7 4.0GHZ and 32 RAM, flash storage.... There are a few considerations on top of performance like compactness, portability and yes...design. There are however a couple of questions:
    - Will the iMacs excel in editing HD footage with Premiere CC 2014, we need them to edit like a hot knife cuts through butter
    - In terms of editing with external hard drives, is USB 3 a good idea until we can afford some Thunderbolt drives?
    - I read the new iMacs will come with AMD graphic cards so I guess they wont be able to use the CUDA Mercury engine?
    thanks for your help,
    Guille

The Mercury Engine can use OpenCL in Radeon cards. That being said, the R9 M290X is not in the list of currently supported cards, and therefore the Mercury Engine should default to Software Only.
Adobe won't add the R9 M290X to the list of supported cards until they can fully test it. So hopefully they will add it in a future update (*fingers crossed*).
Until then, you may be better off with a maxed out 27" iMac which has the GeForce GTX 775M, which is supported. It will no doubt perform better, and yes it will be like a hot knife through butter.

  • Using Setup assistant on new iMac question.

    Hi everyone,
I just purchased a new iMac and hopefully should be getting it sometime this week. I currently have an older iMac from 2005 running OSX 10.5.8. I will want to use Setup assistant to transfer files, setting, etc... from the old computer to the new computer. I'm wondering what is my best way to do so? I have an external drive that I use for Time Machine backups of my computer. Is it better to transfer files connecting the external drive to the new computer and transfering the files from the Time Machine Backup file? Or should I connect my older computer to the new one and transfer files from the old computer to the new one? Is either way quicker than the other? When I transfer files, will all my keychain passwords transfer as well? Any other tips or information you can give me?
    Thanks in advance!
    Steve

    Hi
I am also about to do this, as soon as it arrives.
I have tried to declutter my old imac as much as I can, I've got rid of a lot of junk, and am planning on rebuilding my aperture and iphoto library as there were a lot of missing masters etc.
My music folder was a mess so I've deleted everything and will redownload from itunes match to the new machine.
So I'll be transferring user accounts, apps, some files, my photo's and some movies, so there is about 190gb of content, but my hdd shows 230gb used.
This is mainly my current account has a library that is >30gb. is there any way i can reduce this or de-kruft it prior to transfer? I dont want to end up moving obsolete caches or backups or software updates over to the new machine.
Does migration assistant act selectively, or just copy the whole folder?
Thanks for any advice or guidance.

  • New Sequence Question - for slow motion video

    Hi,
I'm a very new user of Premier.  I've recently had issues with choppy playback of my preview videos.  After much research I believe the issue was down to two things.  Firstly my sequence did not match my input clip, I had it set to my desired output.  Secondly, I was editing video across my network, rather than bringing it locally to my PC.  I've fixed the latter issue by copying video files to my local machine and then moving them back onto the network once I've finished editing.
The advice out there essentially seems to be to match your sequence to your primary input video.  I've done that and it helps.  However, it's raised a big question for me.  My input video is from a GoPro and is at 1080p 50fps.  I ultimately want my output video to be slowed down to 25fps (resulting in a constant slow motion effect throughout the entire sequence).
If my sequence settings are set to match the input clip (50fps) and I slow the video down by 50%, will that result in an unsmooth video?  My basic understanding is that if I slow 50fps video down by 50% then Premier will have to double the amount of frames.  Where as previously, if I slowed it down by 50% Premier had enough frames to play with as the output video was 25fps.
Hopefully my question makes sense!  Any advice on what the best approach is?  Or is this a complete non-issue when it comes to exporting the video (providing I export to a 25fps formart)?
    Thanks,

I think you said it OK, you are just missing the right words to do what you want. Let's walk through this for you, and for others that might read it later.
If you take a 50 frame per second video and put it into a sequence created from it, then slow it down 50% it doubles up each frame to achieve slow motion. Not what you want.
If you take a 50 frame per second video and put it into a 25 fps sequence, it drops half the frames to play at normal speed. Not what you want.
What you want to do is interpret the 50 fps video to 25 fps, then drop it into a 25 fps sequence. Each frame will play at 25 fps and generally be smooth as silk.
I don't have any 50 fps clips handy, but here are examples of taking 60 fps to 30 fps. (Excuse the idiot way that we Americans do things. Our 30 is actually 29.97 etc)
First, right click on the clip in the Project Panel, select Modify, and Interpret Footage. Then change the 50 to 25 - similar to this image:
