New iMac, same iTunes library possible?

I'm in the process of buying a brand new iMac for myself, instead of using the family iMac all the time. I'd like to have the same iTunes library, and preferably a copy on my hard drive. Will iTunes Home Sharing do this, or will I have to do this in some other way? I'm aware of Migration Assistant, but I believe that it only moves files and applications, it doesn't copy them.

to an extent, yes. home sharing will not bring playcounts and ratings over. also, unless you have embedded artwork manually in the files, it won't copy.

the simplest way would be to connect the two Macs with a firewire cable, boot the source Mac in _*Target Disk Mode*_, and copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music folder) from <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music on the source (family Mac) to <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music on the new Mac (overwriting the iTunes folder in place there).

New iMac & Blown iTunes Library

Hey All... boy I sure hope someone can help me.
So for the last few years I've been running the latest version of iTunes on my Powerbook. But my library has gotten pretty large. I just bought a new iMac, and this morning I copied my iTunes Library folder over to my new iMac. I really wanted to retain my play counts and ratings. Pretty smooth, no problems, so I deleted it off my Powerbook. I saw all my music & TV shows in my library as they should be. Later this evening I tried to start up iTunes, and it gave me an error message that said it was looking for the .xml file for my library, and then said it was "organizing" my library. Then it tells me that my file is damaged. When it finally opens, about half my stuff is missing.
Right now I'm trying to restore my backup to my Powerbook to get my full library back. Where did I go wrong? What should I have done? How did my library work fine, and then wind up damaged? Any help is desperately appreciated.

If you choose syncing/change library instead of 'connect to new library', you should preserve the files on the tv.

Can I sync the same iTunes library on both my iMac and my MacBook Pro? I've been connecting my iPhone to each and it's causing problems for me with them being different, despite my purchases always being under the same Apple ID.

The easy way to do this is to keep the library on an external drive which you can plug into either computer. Of course this isn't always the desirable solution. You can try routinely copying the library from computer to computer though this gets tiresome.

How do I use a new AppleID to access same iTunes Library?
I would like to use my Family's AppleID (already created) to login to my iTunes Library on my iMac.
This is the first step, then I will build that account, and then sync my family's iPad with this account (currently synced with my personal iTunes account.
Can anyone please help me with the exact steps I should follow to "logout" and then logback in to iTunes using a different AppleID but access my current library(primarily music and Apps) (move library from my personal AppleID to new Family AppleID)?

I am having trouble in setting up sync AND stream from the same iTunes library.
Config :
Mac OS - Latest update 5/6/09
iTunes - Latest update 5/6/09
Apple TV - Latest update 5/6/09
I am able to either sync OR Stream from my iTunes library but not sync AND stream from the same iTunes library
Let's say i want to sync :
Go to Apple TV > Settings > computer
Add Library (Not shared for Syncing)
Enter passcode in iTunes and select the items to sync
After sync is complete
You can see photo, music & video in My Photos, My Music & My Videos.
Let's say now my Apple TV is full
So like to stream some other content
Now
Go to Apple TV > Settings > computer
Add SHARED Library
Passcode is shown in apple TV but not able to Enter it in iTunes (click to set link is not there next to Apple TV item under devices)
To get that you have to right click the apple tv from the devices and select don't sync.
You will get a message saying that all content in apple TV will get deleted.
If you say yes then only the passcode screen for streaming is presented.
So i am not able to sync AND stream from the same iTunes library.
Any idea?

no... both synced and streamed content show up all together. there is no way to tell what content is synced or streamed when looking at it on the appletv. it is seemless as in there is no difference in how it is presented.
you also need to make sure you are using "custom sync" rather than "automatic sync", as you can't select the "show only synced content" box when using "automatic sync".

Can Atv1 and Atv2 sync with the same itunes library?

I have imac running snow leopard.It was working perfectly well wit my Atv1. I decided to buy Atv2 for airplay function. Since I installed Atv2 icannot find my Atv1. What is more after resetting my Atv1 I cannot find it under 'Devices' in Itunes. It connects to the internet and my network. I can login to the itunes shop and download and watch movies etc. But I cannot register it with my itunes library and imac. Quite possible.
You may need to disconnect the 'connection' and reconnect on AppleTV1 in Settings>Computers.
If a sync (content in My Music not My Shared Music etc) connection AppleTV will be wiped clean of media in preparation for a new sync library.
There may be other factors at play (securtiy software, firewalls, corrupt iTunes/other software installation).
Also worth restarting router, computer, itunes and AppleTV.

This might sound dumb but I honestly have no idea - I want to purchase a second iPod but don't know if I can run them both from the same iTunes library? The new one I want is a shuffle so a much small capacity then my other iPod. Help.

Can 2 different computer accounts share the same Itunes library?

Does anyone know: Is it possible for two users on the same computer to "SHARE" the same iTunes Library so you don't have to duplicate libraries on the hard disk?
So far I have been having to load 25GB of Music on my wife's account and the same 25GB itunes library on my account.
I have put the single iTunes files in the "PUBLIC" music folder and set that as the default on the ITUNES "Preferences" but still does not work for some reason.

Yes sir, did that but it still has the same problem.
Now when I go to my wife's account (everything identical , playlists, etc. in both accounts) it does not know where to locate the songs. I place it in the default and it works, but as soon as I go back to the other persons account, the default has automatically changed back, and none of the playlists (although still intact) have again lost the location of the actual music (located on in the Public Music folder) very frustrating.
It would seem to be simple.

Some videos not showing up on AppleTV from iMac's iTunes library

Having a strange problem. Not sure if it is an iTunes problem or an AppleTV problem but I will try here first.
I have several videos in my library, some of which are digitized home videos I edited/rendered, others are AppleTV converted DVD's I own. For some reason, many of them are not showing up on my AppleTV when I go into "Computers" off the main menu and select my iMac with the iTunes library of them. Some show up, but more and more do not. They are all properly formatted and done so using Compressor settings for AppleTV. No idea why some are not showing up.
If you look on the iMac with the library on it, they all show up fine. And if I try and play the video on my iMac but tell it to use AirPlay to play the video on the AppleTV, it plays just fine on the TV/AppleTV. I do have Home Sharing turned on for ALL my media and I also use iTunes Match service.
When I try and use my iPad to access videos under the "shared" option and select my iMac's iTunes library, I get the same incomplete list. So I am thinking it's the iTunes library that's sending out an incomplete list for some reason. No idea why.
I have tried drag-and-dropping the videos into the iTunes library as well as using the "Add to library" menu command, neither makes a difference.
Any suggestions?

Also - i had a similar issue - lots of movies in itunes - not showing up as selectable on apple tv - i found that you have to go to "list" in itunes and select any movies i wanted to be selectable when i switched to the apple tv device - can someone please create a word for - "my software changes and somehow i'm an idiot for not knowing what magic the programmers are throwing down" - this too will change in the future - just need the happy customer service types to maintain a voice with the programmers and bottom line guys and gals.

how do i do that? it's already working on mine, and he just loaded the remote app on his iphone and set up home sharing with my apple ID. However, when he tries to add my iTunes library, it gives him a code but I can't see his iphone device name so we can't pair his iphone.

I have two personal computers that both serve different functions (one is a Mac and another is a PC running Windows 7) and I would like to use the same iTunes library between them, using my external hard drive. On the mac, I have moved the default library to the external hard drive, and when the drive is connected it runs through there. I would like to do the same for the PC, but instead of creating a new library folder, how do I tell iTunes to use the one that is already there from the Mac? I would like to do this through the external hard drive, as I use the computers in different locations and Home Sharing is not an option. I would like to be able to use the external hard drive to access my library and sync my iPod from either laptop, because when I travel I leave the Mac at home.

It can be done, however you will need the appropriate drivers or disk format so that both operating systems can read & write to the drive, your library needs to be in the standard nested format of an iTunes library folder containing the database files and an iTunes Media (or iTunes Music) folder with all your media. The library also needs to be in the newer layout as shown on the right in this image.
If it isn't use the option Library > Organize Library > Rearrange files in the folder "<Media Folder>".

Two accounts with the same iTunes library (at same time!)

Hi, on my iMac I setup my iTunes library (connected with ATV), guessing what happens if I move this library to the shared folder on my iMac and in the same time this is opened by the two accounts present on my iMac (me and my wife).
Should I make the connection with ATV also on my wife's account ? What happens to other account ?

only one iTunes can access a library at a time.
instead, you could try this:
i assume both you and your wife have their own iTMS account. if that is so, you might want to try to cross-authorize iTunes on each account to play/use content purchased by the other. this works at least for an iPod Touch so i would be surprised if it didn't work for the TV.
that's basically very easy. all you have to do is +log out+ of one account (click on the account name in the Store window and select sign out from the pop-up dialog) and into the other, and then they will both be authorized. (be sure to just *log out*, not de-authorize ).

How can I remove songs purchased from my iPhone while retaining the music in my iMac's iTunes library?

I have an iPhone 4S (iOS 6.1.3) and have puchased an album from iTunes using only the iPhone. I have since synchronized the album with my iTunes library on my iMac (OS 10.8.3). I no longer want to have this particular album on my iPhone, yet I do want to retain it for my iMac's iTunes library. I've tried deleting the album directly on my iPhone and then synchronizing it with a new iPhone playlist which no longer includes that album. This unwanted album on my iPhone keeps showing up even though the songs specificed for my iPhone playlist don't include that music. I'd be grateful for any help. Thanks in advance.

1) in the main panel of iTunes - make sure Only sync checked music (or something like that) is checked
2) in the Music pane of iTunes - uncheck the songs you dont want on the phone - or check only the songs you do want on the phone if nothing is already checked
3) sync your phone - the music you no longer want on the phone should be removed but still exist on your iMac
