New Imac screen flicker when dimmed down

Hi guys, I got my new Imac about a week ago, aside from the whistling and dead pixels in the isight, are any of you guys getting screens that are sort of flickering when you start to dim them down. The light dims and filckers very quickly. It's kind of looks like the old CRT's at a slow refresh rate and is becoming really annoying. I was wondering if this is normal for all the Imacs. I'll be getting a replacement because of the dead pixels in my Isight, but this will also be something to look for in the new one. So it'll be good to know if it is normal.

Well, this is definitely a hardware defect and it appears to be wide spread. I took my iMac back to the Apple store today and the Tech saw the problem too and exchanged it for a new one (since it was within 14 days). Well, got that one home, and it had the same flicker issue. Two hours later back at the Apple Store, they saw the issue with the replacement machine too, but not with any of their floor models. So, they took that one back too and are doing a writeup to send it back to Apple so they can diagnose the problem.
The replacement iMac they brought out for me this time we setup in the store and confirmed did not have the display flicker issue when the backlight was all the way down.
So my suggestion is if you have this issue, take it into the Apple Store and have them replace it or repair it.

  • Does anyone like their new iMac screen?????

I am going to be recommending a new imac for some friends and wanted to know if there is anyone that likes the new screens on their iMac?
I know only people with problems post on here, but just wanted to see if there are any happy iMac users.
    thanks in advance

For the past 4 years, I've been using the Powerbook G4 laptop and I prefer the matte screen display. When I saw the new iMacs, the only thing I didn't like was the glossy screen, but everything else was awesome about the iMac. In the end, I decided that the glossy screen wasn't SO bad. The only time it's really irritating is during daytime when the light reflects off the screen. Since my iMac is in my bedroom, I can just pull down the blinds and it'll shield the sunlight from 'attacking' my iMac glossy screen. Or, you can increase the screen brightness, and it helps take away the reflections.. not 100%, but most of it.
I've gotten used to the glossy screen now, and yes, it does make my Powerbook G4 screen look quite dull. Haha. I still use my G4 for school purposes, so it's not going into the can just yet...
Yeah, that's my take on the screen. So, yes, I do like the new iMac screen.

  • Screen flicker when dragging documents

Does anyone experince screen flicker when dragging files from the Finder to the Desktop?
Here's a short video showing the problem.

I am running Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8 (12A206j)) and just started to experience similar issues (see image below)  When scrolling up or down a webpage.  It happens randomly, and there are only a few applications open (Photoshop, Pages Safari). I have reset PRAM, but am not holding my breath on that...

  • Screen flicker when copying to desktop

I am experiencing a sudden screen flicker when I copy files or folders to my desktop? Doesn't seem to affect the system in any way, just very annoying. Anyone else having this issue? Is there a fix for this?
    Thanks, Rick

Step one is to log into a newly created admin user account and see if the problem persists.

  • Screen Flicker when swiping to home screen?

Has anyone noticed a screen flicker when swiping from page 2 to page 1 of apps? Happens every single time. It only flickers when arriving at page 1 from page 2 of apps, never in any other page or search screen.
    I have a 16GB iPhone 4. Never saw this on a 3G iPhone with iOS 3.1.3

I got my iPhone 4 replaced 8-7-10 (3rd) iPhone 4. Yes I see that flicker as well. I'm extremely disappointed in apple. I had the iPhone 3G and got that phone replaced 4 times. Now I'm on my 3rd iPhone 4, why do the iPhones have so many problems? Whenever I go to an apple store I see tons of customers getting their iPhones replaced. We pay a lot of money for this phone and in the end the phone has problems which results in multiple replacements. We buy apps, movies, music, cases, batteries etc. Apple boasts about how great the iPhone is, I've yet to see that "great" iPhone.

  • HELP!!! new iMac. screen shifts side to side and i can't use mouse when this happens.

i bought this imac back in january and have had nothing but problems since then with it. first my OS (lion 10.7.4) crashed or some **** where i got extremely slow and would give me the colored wheel of death so i take it to worst but where i bought it and they say its a corupt hard drive so its sent out. get it back, they say it whats the os system so they re-boot the os on to it. mean while i was having the same problem ive have from the beginning which was the screen would shake side to side when ever i would be doing something and the mouse locks up and i would have to wait for it to stop. this is VERY ANOYING!!! i took it to apple and they ran a series of stress tests on it and they couldnt even get it to produce it once while they had it. so now its STILL doing it!  can anyone please help me. im ready to go to apple and demand a new computer or punch someone in the face...

    I'm speaking from experience.
You're using a wireless Magic Mouse right?  Yeah, thought so.
I first noticed the problem on Lion (10.7.5) but that was also the time my Mighty Mouse or whatever that thing was called crapped out and I upgraded to the Magic Mouse.  I always thought the problem was with the OS.  My system is not supported by Mountain Lion (late 2006 model, the white one) so I did a system reinstall and stil had the issue.  Being stupid, I still attributed it to the OS but had my doubts about the mouse with all the silly swipes here and there and everywhere.  Until today.  I said enough of this garbage and switched off the mouse and plugged in a beat up wired Logitech.  Going on 4 hours now and not one screen shake.
The "iMac screen shake".  Not very well documented.  But **** if that isn't one frustrating mofo.  Seriously, how did I use this thing for many moons with the screen shaking every 3-5 minutes.  ***??   And by the way, to stop the screen from shaking while it's doing it, madly swipe back and forth on the magic mouse shell to take control back.  Man, I'm getting upset just thinking about this problem.  And the waste of $70 for the mouse.
And for what it's worth, I bought an iMac (2010) for my folks and I've noticed the problem on their machine too.  Yep, Magic Mouse.

  • How can I restore my new iMac back to when I first switched it on?

I was so keen to get my new iMac working that I got my name wrong in the setup and I stupidly skipped the migrate settings step which would have taken everything over from my old Mac.
How can I get back to how things were when I first switched on so I can go through the whole procedure again - this time the right way?
    Thanks in anticipation.

Thanks Matt. Your comments are reassuring.
But I also need to reset the name that I typed in at the beginning as I started to set up the machine for my business partner (we bought two - one for him, one for me) but he finished up taking the other one. So I need to go back to that first switch-on screen again.

  • Screen flicker when the CPU is working

My macbooks started to flicker when the CPU is working, I'm using bootcamp and it doesn't seem to flicker when im using Windows XP.
Anyone had the same problem or got any ideas on what I should do?
    Thanks
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Interesting... I see a few possibilities of what could cause the problem:
    1. It could be a software issue. I can get mine to stop doing it for several days by making a setting change in System Preferences > Energy Saver. After several days, it starts doing it again.
    2. It is hardware, but not the screen. It could be some component that controls the screen brightness. However, it does not start when I dim the screen with the F1 key on the keyboard. So it may be something with the power management logic hardware.
I have the feeling it is in software, judging by the fact that your screen replacement did not fix the problem, combined with the observations I have made with my own MacBook.

  • New iMac: Screen Issues and Noisy Hard Drive

    Hello,
I'm writing regarding my new 27" iMac which I purchased just under a week ago (spec: 3.1GHz Intel Core i5, 1TB HDD, 4GB RAM).
When I got my iMac home and unboxed it, all was fine, however once I had began to install some applications and use them, I noticed an unusual issue with the screen. I had a Skype window open on the left hand side of my screen, with an ongoing chat, Obviously, the chat 'stream' was moving, but the menu items on the far left remained the same. The iMac had been on for about 10mins, with the Skype window open for the same duration. After which, I opened iPhoto, and made it full screen, filling my screen with a dark grey background. I could still see the outline of the text from my Skype window through the iPhoto window. Thinking the window may have been semi-transparent, I closed the Skype window, however when I re-fullscreened iPhoto, the test was still there, as if it was burnt into the screen.
I understand the concept of screen burn, but surely this shouldn't happen after just 10mins? It's nothing permanent, as it fades away again within another 5mins or so, but it is annoying knowing that I can't leave a window open for very long without worrying I will have text burnt into my screen for a period of time. As a graphic designer, I could be working on images that are dark, and likewise, I don't want to see remains of my chat or emails over the top of my design work.
Has anyone else had this issue? Is this an issue that can be repaired by myself (eg. installing a firmware update, although I have all the latest updates from Software Update)? Or should I just return my iMac to the store and get them to look at it? I'm worried that if I take it back, they may fail to see the issue, as the lighing is a lot different in the store to at home.
The other issue I am experiencing is I have a very noisy hard drive, that seems to click and make a grumbling noise rather a lot. Obviously at times when the computer is working hard, this is to be expected (I think), although most of the time it is grumbling away whilst I'm just browsing in Safari with one tab open.
Has anyone else experienced this issue, taken it back and has a successful replacement? I've read that it could be to do with Mac OS X Lion, because people have reported that their hard drive ran silently on Snow Leopard but has got noisier with Lion. Should I wait for a Lion update before returning it? Other than the issues above, everything is fine.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and I look forward to someone being able to shine some light on my issues.

    Thanks for the advice.
Today, I returned my iMac to the Apple Premium Resellers where I purchased it. The helpful chap there looked at my screen and acknowledged the issue, before giving me a brand new iMac.
My previous model came with Snow Leopard pre-installed, which I upgraded to Lion. This new, second iMac is a relatively new one as it has Lion pre-installed. Feeling hopeful, I've just arrived home and unpackaged my new computer.
The result? EXACTLY the same issue. My Twitter window on the far left of my display has been open for no longer than about 7 or 8 mins, and I can clearly see the display pictures from my follwees burnt into the screen when I full screen a dark app like Snow Leopard.
I'm wondering whether this is a Lion issue? Should I wait for a software update before returning it again? It's not something that's going to be annoying on a day-to-day basis, but now that I know it's doing it, I can't help but keep checking when I open iPhoto.
PEOPLE WITH NEW 27" iMAC's: Would you please perform the following test for me and let me know the results?
    1. Open up a white backgrounded application, such as Twitter, Skype, or Safari.
    2. Leave it on screen (anywhere, but far left seems to be worst) for about 5 to 10mins.
    3. Open up iPhoto with it's grey full screen background, or set your wallpaper to a flat colour dark grey.
    4. Now minimise the white backgrounded windows, and switch to a grey background with no windows in front of it.
    5. Look carefully at your screen: can you still see an outline of/text from the window in the position that it was, like it's burnt into the screen?
Thanks in advance to anyone that can perform this for me.

  • Need advice: slight defect on new Imac screen, what would you do?

I just got new Imac from apple online store and I noticed that there is a small defect in screen. It is about 1/4 or just a bit smaller inch line that looks like hair. I am not too pleased about it. What would you do?
ps, i had this shipped from online store, so do I take it back to apple for new one since still within 14 days. Not sure how it works if you purchased online.
    thanks

I would ring them up - if you bought it online I'm not sure if you can return it to a store, although if it's one that they sell in store you might. I changed the spec on mine so couldn't return to a store when I had a problem and got it replaced. They'll send a new one out express delivery and arrange for a courier to pick the old one up. I managed to arrange it so the new one arrived the same day as they picked up the old one.

  • White screen flash when shutting down after a suspend

If I have suspended my laptop at any time during its uptime, when shutting down the screen flashes white, but it turns off as usual. This only happens if I have suspened.
There are no issues as far as I can tell, I see nothing much in journalctl when comparing a suspeded shutdown vs no suspend.
Im using nouveau, and I'm up-to-date as of now.
    Google hasnt returned much,
    Anyone else seeing this?

Create a new account, name it "test" and see how your apps work in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.
If the problem is present in the test account also, then it is systemwide. In this case try repairing this with the 10.5.2 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
If the problem does not appear in the test account try starting in "Safe Mode" (It will take a bit more time to startup because it runs a directory check first).
If that works go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items and remove them. Boot normally and test. If there are still problems, go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving /Users/Home)/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.
    Let us know.

  • Buying a new iMac.  But when!?!?

Hello everyone. I am very excited to say that sometime in the next few months I am going to be getting my second iMac! I bought my first one (a 17" 1Ghz iMac with 768 RAM) about 5 years ago while in college... and it has been a good ride ever since!
The computer still works perfectly for every day stuff, like email, the web, iTunes, and such... but it is really starting to lag when I do iPhoto, iMovie, iWeb, etc. I'm sure most of you know what I am talking about.
I'm finally ready to make the upgrade now that Leopard is here... and I am just trying to make sure that I time it right. When I bought my last one, I made the mistake of buying about 2 weeks before they added USB 2.0... which would have made a huge difference for me, since one of the biggest reasons I am upgrading now is that I can no longer sync my iPhone with the msot recent update which killed USB 1.1 compatability.
But, that is neither here nor there.
Anyway, I am hoping to buy in the next 2 months if possible, but for many reasons I want to make sure I time it right.
    1) There has been quite a few problems with the first alum gen of iMac screens, graphics cards, etc. I would like to wait for the second revision if possible.
    2) Macworld is in January... is there any possibility new iMacs will come out around that time?
    3) How far do you guys think Blu-Ray compatability is from being added to macs? When it comes out do you think it will be burnable Blu-Ray or just readable?
I found a website which tracks updates to all of Apple's computers, and attempts to tell you whether the time to buy is right or not, and that seems pretty interesting... http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/#iMac
But I am curious about what you guys think. If you were in a position to get a new mac... but weren't really in a big hurry... when would you buy? Right away? After Macworld? Wait until the next version comes out (whenever that is)? I guess there are nearly limitless options here, and obviously you can't always wait because things like this are always changing and always improving.
But, nonetheless, would you wait for the next revision? When do you think it will take place?

It's unlikely there will be any changes to the recently released iMacs at Macworld Expo. I've just recently purchased a 24" 2.8GHz iMac w/750GB HD, and immediately upgraded to 4GB with Crucial memory, and it's working out great.
The ATI HD 2600 video card issue was resolved in early November. Anyone having a problem now is probably having a hardware issue, vice the software issue fixed by the early November patches (1.2 for Tiger/1.3 for Leopard). My iMac was built in week 45, and has had NO video anomalies at all, certainly no freezes attributed to the video card issue.
The front of the new iMac is covered with a large sheet of glass, which is very reflective. However much that concerns you depends on you. It concerns me not at all. The new iMac 24" LCD is very bright, overpowering any reflections while the Mac is in use. There's a window behind me that I've never noticed while using the Mac.
The only issues I've had with the new iMac involved incompatible apps I migrated over from my old 2.7GHz G5 Tower. I've weeded the troublesome apps out and my Mac is now working perfectly.
It's probably wise to wait for Macworld Expo the third week in January to see if there are any surprises, but you should have no concerns about the currently shipping 24" iMacs. They're great machines.

  • PDA screen flicker when updating control properties

    Hi all,
I'm developing a mobile application for Windows Mobile 5 using LabVIEW 2009 SP1 and the Mobile Module. After coming to terms with many of the limitations, I've got a simple menu driven interface working. The interface consists of a transparent 240x320 picture control to which I draw the menu item text using the Draw Text At Point VI, along with an icon representing the menu item. Behind this picture control is a second picture control which contains the selection graphic to show which menu item is highlighted.
The problem I'm now facing is an annoying screen flicker every time a control property for the selection graphic is set. Specifically when the user navigates the menu using the up/down arrows on the device, the menu selection on the screen is moved using the Position->Top property to move it to highlight the correct menu item. Whenever this property is set, the whole screen flashes white and redraws.
Presumably this is due to the top level picture control being redrawn when the underlying control is updated (which makes perfect sense), but I wish it wasn't so noticeable.
    So a couple of questions:
    1. Is there any way to enable double-buffering of the display from the Mobile Module or on the device itself?
    2. Is my picture control behind picture control design flawed? I would use a system listbox for the menu but it's a bit ugly, and doesn't support icons/symbols under the Mobile Module. Other limitations of the Module Mobile (like string controls that can't have transparent backgrounds) led me to use picture controls as the best overall solution.
    Cheers,
    Michael

    Thanks everyone for the feedback.
I just did a day's worth of testing using C# and .NET for Windows Mobile (in Visual Studio 2005) and was able to reproduce the same interface without any flickering issues. Not having to poll the device's hardware buttons is also a positive
The key is to override the main form's OnPaintBackground() method.
From "Crafting Smartphone User Interfaces Using .NET Compact Framework":
    OnPaintBackground
This method needs to be over ridden to prevent the OS from repainting the background each time the user navigates the ListView, causing flicker. If you don't need a background then just override this method but provide no implementation.
So it looks like I'll be doing things in C# for this project. As the mobile device won't be used for data acquisition, the Mobile Module isn't a necessity. I just hope .NET's serial functionality is as good as LabVIEW's!

My Safari is unstable (screen fliocks up and down)  This is especially frustration when I scroll to a link, then it moves while I am try ing to click it.  It also zooms in to the largest size frequently.  Is there a fix for this short of reinstalling Safari?

From the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.
