New imac VS. 4 year old G5???

Hello. I currently have a single processor 1.8ghz Power Mac G5. It is about 4 years old and running a little funny lately (im sure nothing yet another install and restore cant fix). I was looking at the specifications for the new imacs and noticed that the specs for the imacs seem to be better than the specs on my 4 year old G5. For some reason, I've always had the experience that laptops, imacs, anything small, runs slower than my desktop. Is there anything other than the normal specifications that apple lists on the site that might make the imac actually slower than my G5? For example, on paper, the imac looks like it would by far be a better computer, but I'm not sure if there is anything that isn't listed here that would affect the performance.
imac specs:
- 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
- 1GB memory
- 250GB hard drive
- 8x double-layer SuperDrive
- ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT with 128MB memory
Here's the "hardware overview" of my computer in the apple system profiler
Machine Name: Power Mac G5
Machine Model: PowerMac7,2
CPU Type: PowerPC 970 (2.2)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1.8 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 900 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 5.1.4f0
Serial Number: XB33617RNVR
Anyone have any thoughts? By the way, I do use the computer for some graphics heavy work (I am a graphic designer and sometimes have large photoshop + illustrator files). I was in the market to purchase a new monitor, which is what got me started questioning the imac. I was probably going to get the 20" apple display, and when I saw that the imac starts at $1199 and the monitor would have been $599, I thought I should look into getting the imac since the monitor is very similar to the one I want. I can't afford a mac pro right now either. Any feedback would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks so much in advance for your time.
Regards,
Dayna

Hi Dayna Reilly-
I am going to throw in the same basic thoughts as the others.
IMHO the iMac tops out as a +high-end consumer+ machine. It gives you the tools out of the box to get started doing some pretty cool things and to do them fairly well. It also gives one room to grow and improve upon those skills by giving you the ability to run some higher-end applications to get a taste of what you can do with a Mac.
For reasons well described by the others and based on the description of your work, you would soon push an iMac to it's limits. If you generate any revenue at all by using your computer you really should consider investing a little more in a Mac Pro. Your payback will be short-term as the time savings to your workflow alone will be significant.
No matter what Mac you get, do not forget to add in the cost of upgrading your professional applications such as Photoshop.
Luck-

I have multiple Apple IDs. Is there a way for me to merge them into a single Apple ID?
Apple IDs cannot be merged. You should use your preferred Apple ID from now on, but you can still access your purchased items such as music, movies, or software using your other Apple IDs.

Yes, you can import to an external drive by choosing it from the Import Screen.
Once an Event or Project is in iMovie, it is best to move it to the external using iMovie, so the Project does not lose links to the Event.
For full instructions on how to do this, see this link.

How can I convert MiniDV tapes to DVD? I've use a Canon GL 2 and an iMac about 1 year old. I'm trying to use iMovie and I've installed the latest drivers.

MiniDV was a great format, one I still use often. I also still use iMovie HD6 to process it and, for all the iterations of iMovie that followed it, I still believe it was one of Apple's greatest movie software programmes, next to Final Cut Pro, using a timeline method of editing. That was also in the day which Apple put Superdrives into their computers, so that you could not only make your movie in iMovie, but you could render it to iDVD and then burn the DVD. Now you need to buy an external burner.
Since iMovie HD6 and iDVD 6 were "universal" software, it has continued to work through the many OS releases since it came out with Tiger, I believe it was. So, it may still work with Mavericks too and, if you could locate a copy of iLife 06, probably used, you might enjoy the difference that HD6 has over all iMovie releases since then.
Not saying you can't process your MiniDV with current iMovie versions, but I'm not the one to speak about that.

Several ways.  Open a Finder window & the info will be at the very bottom of the window frame.  Also, if you open Disk Utility, click your hard drive, the info will be listed in DU.  If your HD is shown on your desktop, click on it.  Also, the info can be found inside the System Profiler.

  • New iMac won't recognize old AIM account

Got my parents a new iMac and trashed their old e-Mac. Started from scratch, ported nothing from old machine and got everything installed and updated OK. In launching iChat, however, it pulled me through a new install and then forced me to register as a new account. I use the old ID and password but it says that it's already taken (Duh! Yes, by me.) Dead end. Did not want to create a new iChat or AIM account.
iChat opens but it's not showing the AIM account (it does show Bonjour, however) and all the pull down commands (Buddy List, etc.) are grayed out.
How can I get this new iChat app to see my old AIM iChat gateway?

    Great!!!; thanks.
(I was following the "Set up..." button and putting myself in an endless loop of creating a new account and not being able to use the old one. Should have ignored that and just entered the old account.)

Not good, your machine suffered a Kernel Panic. Please wait until Monday and your Apple Store will try to help troubleshoot your problem. In the mean time you can read the X-Lab's comprehensive article on KP's located at:

  • New iMac--getting thousands of old email messages!

I just got a new iMac and after I added my MobileMe email address in Apple Mail, it started downloading 8,000 old email messages! I have checked in Apple Mail Preferences and in MobileMe mail preferences and I cannot figure out what I need to change in order to tell the MobileMe Mail server to delete all email messages that are over two years old. Can someone help me figure this out?
    Thanks!

There is no way to do this automatically with an Inbox that resides on the IMAP server. Such a time setting is only available with a POP3 server -- in which case deleting from the server does not delete from the Mac.
If you create a Smart Mailbox to segregate the older messages so you can manually delete them, then if you do that, they will not be on the old Mac either.

  • How Would The New iMac Compare To My Old PPC G5 Power-Mac?

I'm a bit out of the loop as far as the performance increases since I bought my G5 Power-Mac several years ago and if I'm honest, never really understood them that well anyways...
What I'm wondering is how the new iMac would compare to my old Power-Mac and would it be able to do what I need it to do. Here's what I have now (from my system profiler). A PowerMac PPC G5 (1.1) 2.3ghz Dual CPU. Bus speed 1.15ghz. It also has 4.5GB of Ram... I also have a dual monitor set-up but would obviously get rid of one if I bought the new iMac. The display I would be keeping would be my 30" cinema display. Would I be able to continue to use that monitor without too much hassle in a set-up with the iMac?
Any help, opinions or insights appreciated!

I have a 2.0 GHz dual core (PCIe slots) Power Mac G5 (the +late 2005+ model). It has 4GB RAM and the low-end 128mb NVIDIA GeForce 6600 LE. The max is 16GB.
I also have a 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo 17-inch white iMac. It has 2GB RAM and ATI Radeon X1600 (128mb) for the built-in graphics. The max RAM is 3+ GB.
Both run Leopard. Both have two displays. I mostly use the iMac currently and another family member uses the Power Mac G5. These two configs feel about equal. Some apps seem to be better optimized for Intel these days. Other older apps are PowerPC-based apps, so the G5 runs those better without the need for Rosetta on Intel. In day-to-day use, I can't say that one is better than the other.
But that's with an older Intel iMac (the low end model even when it was new). For your comparison, the current high-end iMac will undoubtedly be faster. However, with both running Leopard, I don't think the new iMac will be a +quantum leap+ in better performance. Whether the actual difference is worthwhile to you will depend more on how you use your Mac. Once Snow Leopard comes out, with it's better optimization for Intel and more efficient use of multiple processors (and other technical improvements), the story may be different.
With the new iMac lineup, you can use a 30" Cinema display (as an extended desktop) with an adapter off the Mini DisplayPort. It says so on the specs page
    http://www.apple.com/imac/specs.html
"Mini DisplayPort output port with support for DVI, VGA, and dual-link DVI via adapter."
"Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to a 30-inch display (2560 by 1600 pixels) on an external display."

  • New iMac doesn't support old Macbook Pro instruments

Hi - until recently I had a MacBook Pro ( Leopard ) of about 5 years of age.  The screen completely died this month and the MacBook was un-usable.  The HD from the MacBook was migrated to a new iMac ( Lion ) a week ago. When I tried to play the 60+ songs I had created in Garage Band on the Macbook  over the last 5 years, on the new iMac, many of the instruments were un-supported by the iMac and the songs sound totally different and really are ruined.  It seems the iMac doesn't support many of the older instruments on old MacBook HD.  The HD from the MacBook Pro is fine ( it all migrated over to the iMac just fine ) and I assume it contains all my Garage Band tracks ( and I assume Garage Band itself  is on that HD? ).  Is there any way I can play my Garage Band tracks on that HD through another machine or some vehicle that will drive the HD?  In other worgs, how can I retrieve these songs with the original sounds/instruments therein?
Many thanks if anyone can assist me .... literally hundreds of hours of work over 5 years, lost.

It seems the iMac doesn't support many of the older instruments on old MacBook HD.
Instruments are not machine or OS specific.
( it all migrated over to the iMac just fine )
Maybe not? Look at your loops (in HD/Library/Audio/Apple Loops) and instruments (in HD/Library/Application Support/GarageBand) and compare the folders to your old HD. Maybe it makes sense to just manually copy them over and overwrite what you have on your new machine now - it can't be more, but maybe it's less.

  • Can I use my new iMac to control an old G4?

Before I purchased a new iMac G5, I was able to control two Macs using one monitor, one mouse and one keybord. To switch between the two Macs I used an USB KVM Belkin switch.
Can I do the same now that my monitor is the iMac monitor? Can I configure the iMac so I can access (turn on and off, etc.) my old G4 from it?
Any help, advise on the matter will be greatly appreciated.

    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   PowerMac G4

Can I do the same now that my monitor is the iMac monitor?
No. You can use the switch to switch the mouse and keyboard but not the iMac G5's monitor.
Can I configure the iMac so I can access (turn on and off, etc.) my old G4 from it?
    No
You could install Share My Desktop (VNC server) on your old G4. Then use Chicken of the VNC (VNC client) on your iMac G5 to monitor and control the old G4. However you can not start the old G4 using this interface.

  • New imac doesn't locate old imac hard drive via usb port

I have an old iMac from ~2006 that recently stopped reading the harddrive.  I pulled the HD out and connected it to my new imac via USB port but I can't locate it.  The HD spins/powers up so I know the connector is strong enough to supply power.  We connected it to my husband's PC and he can see that there is a harddrive but cannot see any files to read.  He even tried Catacombe to try to read files but it didn't work.  My first issue is how can I locate my HD on the new mac?  But the main issue is how can I pull data/pictures off of the old harddrive and import them to my new computer.  I don't hear any clicking sounds from the harddrive so it seems to be working.  I can't reformat it because I don't want to lose the pictures on it.  I don't need the old harddrive to work/write.  I just need to pull the information off of it.  TIA.

I was not familiar with catacombae , but now I am .
You have a problem with either a corrupt file system on the hd or a hardware problem with the hd.  I'd say try mounting in disk utility.  Try reparing filesystem on hd.  Try one of the disk repair utilities.  Some have a free trail that let's you know if they can do anything.  You pay to get the data.  Seek profession help.  Pay $$$.

  • How to get Aperture 3 onto a new iMac from CD or old MacBook

Hi, I have a common question, but didn't want to post under an existing/solved discussion, so have made a new one. I have an old MacBook with Aperture 3 on it, installed from a CD purchased before it became available via the App Store. I have a new iMac with no optical drive. I know I can transfer files, etc, via Migration Assistant, but I had read that it was better to install again from the original CD. I have read similar posts, which suggested a very popular solution that involved installing the trial version then upgrading it. The supplied link didn’t work for me and further investigation revealed that the trial version is no longer available. I can see my MacBook with Aperture CD over our wifi network, but my computer won’t let me install software via this method. I tried copying the CD to an external hard drive and installing that way, but that didn’t work either. It’s an old MacBook - i don’t have Firewire or Thunderbolt ports. Is Migration Assistant my only option - apart from buying an optical drive?
    Thanks!

So far has worked a treat. Just updating Aperture 3 to the latest version via the App store and all should be well.

  • How do I transfer music and photos from my Power Mac G5 to my new iMac. Have an old FireWire but it does not fit the new iMac

I am trying to transfer photos, music, etc from my Power Mac G5 to my new iMac. The Power Mac is too old for the migration assistant to help. I have an old Firewire but it does not fit the new iMac. Any suggestions? If a Firewire is the best option which one do I need? Thanks.

You need a Firewire 800 to 400 adapter or cable or a external USB 2/3 drive (self powered) it can default to the old USB the G5 uses 1 or 2.

  • My elderly iMac (about six years old) won't wake from sleep after an electrical failure today, and starts up with a black screen.

This Intel iMac is about six years old, has had the motherboard replaced by Apple.  Today we had an electrical failure, and it was asleep at the time.  It refused to wake from sleep, and it seems to start up, but the screen stays black.  I tried zapping the PRAM, shutting it down and turning off the surge protector, etc. . .  and still, nothing.  Any thoughts?

If http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) does not work and you are comfortable working in the Terminal, try the following:
Enter into the Terminal the following: sudo pmset autopoweroff 0 and sudo pmset standby 0
If you like the hibernation, you can switch it back on by re-entering the commands with 1's instead of 0's. You can even change the amount of time by adjusting "autopoweroffdelay" and "standbydelay".
