New iMac, what to do with Macbook Pro

Hi there,
Okay, I have me new 27" iMac and all my files transferred, but I'm unsure of what to do with my Macbook Pro. (And don't say send it to me! )
Is there an easy way to keep all my files synced between the two? I'm not sure if I will use my MBP any more, I never really travelled with it anyplace and I have an iPad for my overnight trips.
My MBP:
17" 1920x1200 high resolution matte display
2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo
8600GT 256MB Nvidia graphics
4GB of DDR2
160GB harddrive
OS X 10.6.7
This thing runs great and has served me well for the last two years. I thought about selling the MBP, I would rather have somebody use it rather than have it sit on a shelf. I think that the small harddrive might scare some people off, so I thought aobut upgrading it before I sell. I've heard that install a SSD will really increase the performance, but there is a much higher cost there.
Looking for some ideas/suggestions.
Thanks, Mark

Thanks, I sell and buy things on Craigslist, and Jason has some good info. Since my MBP is about 3 years old, I won't be going through that effort.
I'll list again on Craigslist and see how it goes. I looked into the Apple recycle plan and they indicate that they would give me about $550 in a Apple gift card. Could use that to buy my wife a new iMac or new MBP.
Thanks, Mark

  • New iMac doesn't support old Macbook Pro instruments

Hi - until recently I had a MacBook Pro ( Leopard ) of about 5 years of age.  The screen completely died this month and the MacBook was un-usable.  The HD from the MacBook was migrated to a new iMac ( Lion ) a week ago. When I tried to play the 60+ songs I had created in Garage Band on the Macbook  over the last 5 years, on the new iMac, many of the instruments were un-supported by the iMac and the songs sound totally different and really are ruined.  It seems the iMac doesn't support many of the older instruments on old MacBook HD.  The HD from the MacBook Pro is fine ( it all migrated over to the iMac just fine ) and I assume it contains all my Garage Band tracks ( and I assume Garage Band itself  is on that HD? ).  Is there any way I can play my Garage Band tracks on that HD through another machine or some vehicle that will drive the HD?  In other worgs, how can I retrieve these songs with the original sounds/instruments therein?
Many thanks if anyone can assist me .... literally hundreds of hours of work over 5 years, lost.

It seems the iMac doesn't support many of the older instruments on old MacBook HD.
Instruments are not machine or OS specific.
( it all migrated over to the iMac just fine )
Maybe not? Look at your loops (in HD/Library/Audio/Apple Loops) and instruments (in HD/Library/Application Support/GarageBand) and compare the folders to your old HD. Maybe it makes sense to just manually copy them over and overwrite what you have on your new machine now - it can't be more, but maybe it's less.

  • New iMac as second display for MacBook Pro not working

I just bought the new thin 2012 27" iMac as a replacement to the last model I had.
I want to use the iMac as a second display for my 2012 MacBook Pro.
I have a Mini Display Port to Mini Display Port cable that used to work with my previous setup and at work with my external display.
However, this isn't working on the new iMac. When I try the Command + F2 suggestion I've seen in the forums here. Nothing happens.
Do I need a new cable now that these are "thunderbolt" connections?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Demetre

You will most likely need a Thunderbolt cable as they are both Thunderbolt devices and not Mini DisplayPort.

can I use the imac as an external screen

  • New Magic mouse just paired with Macbook pro but will not scroll

I have a MacBook Pro that has never been bluetooth paired with anything. The magic mouse and computer pair and it shows everything is ok, but the mouse doesn't scroll. If I physically move it it will click, but otherwise it does not respond. I updated all of the software and have OS 10.6.8. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Look in System Preferences > Universal Access > Mouse    Check scrolling.

  • What is it with Macbook Pro Logic Board?

I bought my 17" Macbook Pro about 4 years ago and while sitting idle for about ten minutes it the screen went completely blank. After many reboots to a black screen with no chimes I realised something could be very wrong. On bringing it to an apple dealer in Dublin I hope that this might be the nVidia issue and I'll get it fixed for free. Unfortunately I got a phone call today to say the logic board needs to be replaced and the issue is nothing to do with nVidia. This will cost €1,350 ex.VAT to fix. I cannot believe that a laptop from Apple that costs €2,500 can only last 4 years. I've noticed this laptop would get quite hot sometimes during usage, I want my laptop back as its something I use alot but its alot of money. If I was to fork that sort of money on another Macbook am I likely to run into this issue again? Possibly. I've read alot of forums with people running into similar problems. I do like Apple products and considered them a producer of good quality products but after discussing this with a number of people I'm starting to see alot of flaws. I hope this issue is fixed in future products.

I have this same problem with my 17" MBP - Early 2008.
I'm writing from Brazil, so I took my computer to Apple Brazil, they don't want to change the logic board, because they are saying that my computer doesn't show some kind of code needed to send to Apple US to replace the part.
Does anyone know how I can contact Apple U.S. to make this claim?
    Sincerely, Alexandre de Carvalho

  • New iMac 2.1 ghz With Logic Pro 7

Just wondering if any of you out there have a new iMac and how it is running with logic.
I have just ordered a new iMac with 1.5gb of RAM and i am going to be using it mostly with Logic.
    Cheers guys

    Ben,
The iMac is a beautiful looking computer. When I see one I marvel at how they pack all that technology into the screen. A friend of mine bought one this summer. He intended to put sketches down on GarageBand, and I would import them into LogicPro to beef them up into a proper demo.
He set it up one weekend and spent the evening trying it out in his back bedroom. Using his SE Electronics mic plugged into his Mackie Spike, he tried to record a little Acoustic Guitar.
The iMac started to whine. These iMacs have a lot of heat generation, seeing as everything is wedged together in the 'screen'. So the fan has to work very hard. The Fan is also right in front of where you are, so whether it is no noisier than any other computer fan, it's NEARER to you so it seems noisier.
By the time you've had the iMac switched on a few minutes and you've got the GarageBand song loaded up with a few tracks (or in your case LogicPro7), the iMac will be working VERY hard so the fan will be doing the same. Some say the bearings in the iMac fan cases can be a bit variable regarding noise levels.
Anyway - The iMac my friend bought was returned a few days later and replaced with a G5 Dual. More expensive? - A little or a lot depending on the screen you buy. But he now can record in a quieter environment.
You will have 7 days after the iMac is delivered to consider whether my advice is right or not and you wish to return it. If you 'want out', google "Statutory Rights" for the UK.
Like I said the iMac is excellent but not for ProAudio.

Replace the Time Capsule with one that has a larger hard drive. Or erase the one you have and start a new set of backups or backup one of the computers to a different backup drive.

I wanted to mark your answer helpful too but I didn't know that I could only put it for 2 answers. Sorry
That was good advice by G-N and s/he is correct about it. Unfortunately, ASC allows only 2 "helpful" and 1 "correct" marks per thread.

  • I have an iMac, an iPhone, and a MacBook Pro.  My full iTunes library is on the iMac and iPhone, but only a handful of songs are on my MacBook.  They are all associated with the same Apple ID.  How do I get all of my music on the laptop?

I have an iMac, an iPhone, and a MacBook Pro.  My full iTunes library is on the iMac and iPhone, but only a handful of songs are on my MacBook.  They are all associated with the same Apple ID.  When I try to sync, I get a warning message stating that I will lose songs on my phone which aren't on the laptop.  How transfer my music from my phone to the laptop?

    Hey kbert73
I would do a transfer of purchases from the phone and not sync. If you sync then it will want to start over and sync music that is on the MacBook Pro. If you want to transfer the music, check out the article below that will give you multiple options on how to move. I have also provided on how to sync with multiple computers.

  • What is the best external hard drive with MacBook Pro

What is the best external hard drive with MacBook Pro?

I agree with Allan, and that link is also called OWC, their hard drives are great.  Have three of their Mercury Pro Elite 2 TB quad interface drives.  They will connect eSATA, Firewire 800 & 400, USB2, so broad reange of options.  Drives seem to come Mac HFS formatted, but I always reformat and partition the drives.  Service and quarantees are top notch.
They offer a wide range of drives/drive systems so like Allan said, spend some time seeing what the have.
