New imac will not find 2nd HD on old computer for data transfering?

imac 2.16   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Well, if the 2nd HD is just data (not a home directory containing prefs and other stuff) you can just finish the transfer from the 1st HD. Once you have the new Mac up and running, just start the old one with the T key held down, and hook the two together with the firewire cable. Both HD's from the old Mac should show up on the new Mac's desktop and you can transfer away.
I'm just guessing, but I believe the setup app on new Macs only looks for the 1st HD.

  • My brand new iMac will not power up after an update restart, any suggestions?

Any suggestions on why my IMac will not power up after it done a restart?

Try an SMC reset and PRAM reset: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3603
    If that doesn't help:
See if it will start in Safe Boot: restart holding down the Shift key until you see a grey progress bar, type your admin password when prompted, let it continue to (hopefully) boot. Restart as normal from the Apple menu.
If that didn't help, try booting into the Recovery HD: restart holding down Command+r and choose Disk Utility from the four choices when they appear on screen. Once DU has launched select your Macintosh HD on the left and click on 'repair disk'. If anything gets changed click on repair disk again until you get a clear pass, restart as normal from the Apple menu.
If you still have problems, give AppleCare a call.

  • HT1338 My new iMac would not download Mountain Lion because "your computer is not compatible" WHAT?! Why is that? Please help

Why do I keep getting a message that my new iMac is not compatible to download Mountain Lion OS? How do I fix that?

Is it brand new with ML preinstalled?
If so, your only way to download is to use the recovery method (hit keys Command + R while restarting). Can't use the app store.
Why are you trying to download?

  • Brand new iMac will not boot, just make's funny "bonk" sound.

I have a brand new iMac (Intel, 20-inch flat panel). Just out of the box. Ran through set-up wizard. Used firewire to transfer files from an old CRT iMac. All was good for about an hour.
Tried to empty the trash. Finder says Trash was emptied, but, if I open the Trash, the 50-odd files I just deleted are still visible! If I try to select one, its icon immediately disappears. Hmmm....
I decide it's time to restart.
Upon restart, computer will not boot.
I push the power button. I hear the startup chime as usual. Screen lights up gray. But no apple logo on the screen. There is a long pause. Screen remains gray. Computer then starts making a soft "bonk" sound every 4-5 seconds. (Kind of hard to describe the sound, just imagine clipping the very first fraction of a second of the normal Mac startup chime, and repeating it every couple seconds.) This continues indefinitely.
If someone has experienced this, or has advice, please let me know your thoughts. Feeling rather bummed. Thanks in advance!!!

Boot from the Install Disk 1
I cannot boot at all (see my post above). The
machine just sits there with a blank gray screen.
I appreciate the article link, though. I've already
read it and it will make a great reference for the
future, provided I can get back to a place where this
    iMac actually runs.
Since you're new to Macs, I'm sure you don't realize that while your iMac is sitting there with only a gray screen, you can insert/push in "Install Disc 1" - and it will be accepted. Then press and hold down the power button until iMac shuts down. After waiting a few seconds until everything has settled, press power button and immediately upon hearing the usual Mac startup tone/chime/chord hold down the "c" key until you see the spinning progress indicator below the Apple logo. It will boot to the DVD, you will be able to use (from the Utilties pull-down menu) Disk Utility to "repair" the hard drive directory, then you will be able to quit the installation process, choose Startup Disk from that same Utilities pull-down, and restart your iMac:)

  • My new imac will not boot up.

I purchased a new imac 2.15" I7 processor and it has been working fine until today. It will not boot up. The background is white and the boot symbol just spins and spins. Powered the system off and back on and didn't work. Also unplugged waited for a minute and tried again. Same result. What should I do?

Try holding the shift key while booting. This is booting into safe mode. The computer will boot using only the necessary Apple kernal extensions. If it boots up in safe mode it may be that additional software you installed is the culprit.

  • New iMac will not play Adobe. APPLE directed me to you to solve the issue. Please assist.

Please assist. My new iMac with latest operating platform by APPLE will not play Adobe on Safari. ESPN.com, as example, has articles that have videos attached. The error message pops up that I must upload / update ADOBE. I do that, but it does not resolve the issue. APPLE believes that the program should be deleted, removed from the Mac, and then re-uploaded via Adobe Technical Support. Can you assist? Thanks. Bob

  • My new iMac will not allow me to daisy chain my external hard drives - what can I do?!

I just purchased the new late 2013 iMac 27" and all is wonderful except it will NOT allow me to daisy chain my external hard drives which is a HUGE problem because I'm a professional photographer & I won't be able to access my images unless I can sort this out.  I know I can purchase a new giant hard drive but i'd prefer not to because I have about 12 TB of data which will be expensive & time consuming to transfer & I'd also prefer not to have that much info tied into one device.  Ultimately I will need to get a Drive with multiple bays but I'd really like a short term solution that works for the drives I currently have.  Any help is GREATLY appreciated!  Thanks!!

Why can't you daisy chain your drives. If it's because the iMac only has a Thunderbolt port and you have Firewire drivers purchase the Thunderport to Firewire adaptor from Apple: Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter - Apple Store (U.S.)

  • ITunes default computer - new iMac will not back up APP's from iPhone 3GS

    Hi all,
I have had an iPhone 3gs since Feb and it sync'd to my Windows laptop fine, but this laptop died recently and I could not deathorise the computer before it did. I now have a brand new iMac and have installed iTunes, it will recognise my iPhone and Sync's calender and contacts but it will not sync my App's from my as it says my iPhone has another default computer, I can see them in iTunes but they are grey'd out. Before my laptop died I restored it to factory settings so even if I could get into it iTunes is not on there anymore - any help appreciated in helping me be able to sync my app's will be appreciated! Thanks, Matt

Iphone will sync itunes content to one and only one computer. When you sync to another it will erase the current itunes content from the iphone and replace with content from the new computer.
You can transfer itunes purchases from your iphone to your computer: Without syncing - File>Transfer Purchases

  • My Macbook Pro will not find or use the downloaded driver for my new Canon Pixma MX479 wireless printer

I have been fussing for hours with a Canon Pixma MX479 printer I received as a gift. The printer was obviously designed for PC control, and has terrible instructions for setting up the wireless capability, but I finally found a few hints online about how to add a WPS printer to my Airport Extreme, so I can finally detect the printer. However, when I try to add the printer, either under System Preferences or while just doing a print, my MacBook requires that I download a driver from Apple to use it. When I attempt to do that, I get a message the driver software is unavailable from Apple and that I should contact the manufacturer for the driver. I have already downloaded and installed the Mac OS driver from Canon twice, but my MacBook apparently can't find it. So I am forced to use Airprint in order to communicate with the printer. I would like to use the proper software to make sure I am accessing all of the features the printer offers. Can anyone tell me how to associate the downloaded driver with my printer when I am attempting to add it?

    Hi Dwntso!
Welcome to the Canon Forums and thanks for posting!
So that the Community can help you better, we will need to know any error messages you're seeing either on your computer or the printer, and the version of OS X you've got on your MacBook as well as the way you intend to connect to your printer (USB or networked via WiFi or Ethernet).
Any other details you'd like to give will only help the Community better understand your issue!

  • New iMac will not boot, even from disk and in Safe Mode

I'm stuck on the grey spinny screen.
    Here's what happened:
I tried to share my Macintosh HD on my network, then, when it was finished, a whole bunch of errors popped up saying that I would have to reinstall. So I restarted, now it chimes and boots to the grey screen and is stuck there. I tried to boot from the CD, but it didn't work, I also tried to use the reinstall disk which didn't work either.

    MashedPotato wrote:
Thanks for the help, All I had to do was fix the disk permissions.
I wasn't waiting long enough for it to boot from the disk.
Your welcome and thanks for the star. Yes it take longer to boot because discs are not as quick as disks.

  • My Itunes Shows The downloads history...but when I try to play them it states it can not find the file.  (same computer for the last 2 years) and no issues. now 1/2 of my library can not be played (as it can not be found)

When I try and re-download some of them from the ITUNES store...I get an error that the file already exists on the computer.  However, when I open Itunes.  The file can not be found.  This problem just started about 1 1/2 ago...prior to that did not have any problems...Help?  direction?

You can move the folder to where iTunes expects to find it and that will work.
Or you can attempt to fix one broken track by looking for it when prompted when you use Get Info or attempt to play. This often works if everything is in the standard layout.
Or you can repair things with my FindTracks script.

  • My printer will not find router.

My new printer will not find my router. I have a Arris router and it does not have a WPS button on top. I have reset router numerous times. Please help.

    Hi @Mysscamaro
Welcome to the HP Support Forums.  I gather that you are unable to print from your iPad to your Deskjet 2540 printer.
I have included a post by @Shirlzz1 titled Help Determine if your router can support AirPrint with the Bonjour Discovery App.  Please download and install the app she suggests to determine if your router supports Bonjour communication.
Please let me know the outcome.

  • New iMac can't find the old iMac via Ethernet

I just bought a new 27" iMac and I am trying to migrate data from my old iMac.
I have the two machines hooked together via Ethernet and have Etherenet turned on in the source iMac but the new iMac can't find the old iMac. The pinwheel keeps spinning with no success. What should I do here?

    Gramps wrote:
    What FireWire?
There is no FireWire port on the new machine so this is a non-starter.
Unfortunately you didn't read my post very thoroughly. You are correct, the new iMacs do not include FW however your old Mac probably does. For just that reason and more Apple makes a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter which you can use if you opt to use FW Target Disk Mode. You can find the adapter by going to your Apple online store or Amazon carries it to. Here is the Amazon link:
    http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Thunderbolt-to-FireWire-Adapter/dp/B008RXYOKY/ref=sr _1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1366831510&sr=8-1&keywords=thunderbolt+to+firewire+cable
However as I mentioned use TM or a bootable clone with Migration Assistant. If your old Mac was using any verison of OS X from Leopard (10.5.x) on at the very least you should have a  Time Machine backup!
Also use Pondiini's guide as AnaMusic suggests, it's THE GUIDE for using Migration Assistant and Setup Assistant. He has also created excellent guides for Time Machine too.
