New iMac won't recognize Motorola iMac (both on 10.5.5) Migration Assistant

I just brought home a new Intel iMac, and tried to transfer data from my old iMac. Both the old and new Macs are running sys. 10.5.5. I have followed all instructions in Migration Assistant, but after I restart my 1.8 GHZ Power PC G5 (holding down T button), the new iMac thinks it's still starting up. I see the Firewire symbol on my old Mac's screen, but the new one doesn't recognize that the old one has restarted. In case I had a defective Firewire cable, I changed it out, but no luck. Any ideas, anyone?

Welcome to Apple Discussions:
Sometimes it's a timing thing. First try disconnecting and reconnecting the cable while both machines are running.
If that does not help, start the old machine in Target mode with FW cable connected but don't start second machine until first is fully booted in Target mode, or if they are already connected and running, reboot the new Machine (same thing).
Lastly, I am not sure you can migrate from a PPC to an Intel, but I may be wrong there, never having tried it.
What does Motorola have to do with this? Just curious. I didn't think they make iMacs.

    m1doc,
Are you migrating from a Mac or a MS Window machine? Either way you probably should be in touch with AppleCare, you have 90 days of free AppleCare telephone support. They can usually help on issues like this. If you don't know the phone number please use http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57 to help find the number in your country.

  • Brand New iMac, Reset to Factory Settings, Fail Migration Assistant

OK well, this may be my faultbut anyway. I just purchased a new iMac 27-inch, then after unboxing it, I ranthe Migration Assistant from a Time Machine external hardrive, until whilemoving some furniture around, it came out, during the transfer process, about20 minutes it. I thought darn what do I do it was working away, and I though stupidlyof me that, I could just restart the machine and just go back to the beginningof the process. Well sadly not and now I have an account no password oranything so I cannot do anything. I went in to recovery mode by on boot usingCommand -R which presented me with some not very helpful options. Is there anyway in which I can just start fresh. Beginning of the Process, blank drives etc?

So what this would be the process
    1. Boot using Command-R
    2. Then in Disk Utility Erease the Hard-Drive
    3. Then go to that clean fresh version of lion in the restore options
    4. Then it should be fine?
or am I missing something, remmeber Mac Newbie,

  • Import (v. 7.1.5) iPhotos from old iMac to new iMac (v. 9.2) using Migration Mgr. over fire wire.  All photos (  many dups) appeared in EVENTS and PHOTOS in the new Mac – but NO ALBUMS.

Attempted to import 6.5 GB of (v. 7.1.5) iPhotos from old iMac to new iMac (v. 9.2) using Migration Mgr. over fire wire.  All photos (plus many dups) appeared in EVENTS and PHOTOS in the new Mac – but NO ALBUMS.  I read a previous response to a similar question -- to copy the pictures library to the new computer.  How best to do that?

There's actually an option to iPhoto Library Manager that makes this all almost work flawlessly (and work well enough for me). With the exception of Photo Albums that the pictures are part of, if you select "Library > Rebuild Library..." and then select "Scavange Orphaned Photos" check box, then it will put all the Photos and Movies into the "Scavanged Photos" album. It matches the modified pictures to their originals. It preserves all the event names and photo groupings. All the meta-data I could spot check it got right (although with 44k pictures, I only checked a few). If you fail to select this option, however, it will find no pictures at all when it goes to rebuild the library (this was true of the small test libraries I tried as well as the big, monster 280GB library I just finished converting). The conversion process took 5 hours to run, but in the end produced a library my new iPhoto can read and that I can interact with. I'll be suggesting to the iPhoto Library Manager folks a notation that would estimate the number of Orphaned Photos and display that number as a hint to the user that the option would be useful.
Edited: Thanks to Old Toad and LarryHN for their help in finding which of the many options to transition this library to 9.5.1 I needed to use. Sorry if I took my frustration of the past several months out on you guys for generously trying to help me.

  • New Mini won't recognize Apple USB modem

I hate being thick but I can't figure out why my new mini won't recognize the Apple USB modem I just purchased. The network preferences see the built-in Airport card, Bluetooth, Ethernet and Firewire, but I cannot get it to recognize any kind of modem (internal or external).
I figured it might be an uninstalled component (this is the Mini with built-in Airport) and looked through the OS X installation discs, but no. I can't find any drivers on the Apple site for the modem... has anyone had any success with this?
    Many thanks in advance,
    m.
    Mini / 1.42Ghz/airport   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Doh! Upgrading the system to 10.4.4 did the trick. I guess the right drivers for the USB modem weren't in the earlier version to be recognized.

  • My new computer won't recognize my printer (HP4500 Officejet Wireless) in the wireless or wired mode

MY new computer won't recognize my printer in either the connected or wireless mode.  When I hit "search for printers" it finds my neighbors wireless printer 100 yards away, and another net, but not mine sitting right beside it.

    Hi,
Have you installed its software abd drivers on your computer yet ? Please use the CD which came with the printer. By the way, what is your Officejet 4500 ? It must be G510something.
    Regards.

  • I transferred files and photos from MacBook to iMac via ethernet cable and using migration assistant. However every time I transferred, it created a separate user and it transferred all files and photos again and again. So now I have 3 users accounts ?

I transferred files and photos from MacBook to iMac via ethernet cable and using migration assistant. However every time I transferred, it created a separate user and it transferred all files and photos again and again. So now I have 3 users accounts with all files and photos saved 3 times on same iMac !! Any idea how to avoid this ?

Yes, you ran into a very understandable problem.
When you use Migration Assistant, it cannot over-write the account that you happen to be using at the time. Upon migrating accounts, it will tell you that it is going to create a new one, but that message is easy to miss.
If you have three identical accounts, log in to the account you want to keep, and delete the redundant ones in System Preferences > Users & Groups.
Now that you know, the easiest way to migrate accounts is to use Setup Assistant when you first get a new Mac. That eliminates any possibility for this to occur, but most people are so eager to use their new Mac that they elect to migrate later.
That's OK too, but in that case you would want to create a temporary account whose sole purpose is to run Migration Assistant so that you may migrate your old one with an identical name. Be sure to give the new account Administrator privileges. When that finishes you would log in to the newly migrated account, and delete the temporary account.

  • How do I move Elements 11 photos and catalogue from iMac to new iMac both running Yosemite?

I've been researching best way to move my photos and catalogue from my current iMac to my new iMac.  I'm using Elements 11.  Both iMacs running Yosemite.  I know I need to deactivate the current computer's version of Elements if putting it on the new one runs me over the license limit - I don't think it will.  I have read enough to be pretty sure I have to NOT migrate the Elements 11 program to the new iMac because it won't work properly - I'll have to reinstall it from my installation disc on the new iMac.  So far, so good.
Now, I want the easiest way to get the photos on the new iMac, in the same folders, and preserve the catalogue and my current ratings on the photos.  I am unclear on how the catalogue works with its backup and restore function.  Should I move all my photos in their folders in exactly the same locations on my new iMac before installing Elements and trying to restore the catalogue?  I read about the ways to restore the catalogue and I am unsure about whether it just looks for the pictures in the places it expects to find them (which will be the same if I copy everything on to the new iMac first), or whether it restores the pictures where it thinks they should be (in which case I should NOT put the pictures on the new iMac before restoring the catalogue or I'll end up duplicating everything).   Also I have read - and been confused by - the options about restoring catalogue in new location, old location, etc.  I don't want my folders changed.  I have my pictures stored where I want them and I want to keep them there - and I'd prefer not to add some extra layer under the basic My Pictures on my iMac.
I have stored the most recent version of the catalogue, with all photos reconnected, on an external drive.  All the pictures in the catalogue have their meta-data associated with them.  I hope that this will allow me to preserve ratings.  Going through thousands of pictures to find the really good ones again is a time-consuming mess.  When I went from Windows to Mac 3 years ago - I lost the catalogue and all ratings.  When I upgraded from Elements 9 to Elements 11, I lost the catalogue and all ratings.  I do NOT want to ever go through that again.

I appreciate your answer and agree that it is correct, but you told me nothing I did not know.  There is an Elements technical paper which says this in much greater detail, but still does not answer the questions I was trying to ask.
The catalogue file seems much too small to include my thousands of photos.  Are you telling me that it has magically reduced the size of all those photos - from 64 GB to 33 GB, and added the catalogue information - so that the photos will just appear out of nothing but that smaller catalogue file when I restore catalogue?  If so, will you explain the options of same location, new location, new location with existing file structure, etc?
I understand installing the program.  I understand that I should backup the catalogue (I've done it).  I understand I will use restore to restore the catalogue.  I found all this on other sites.  I need someone, somewhere, to explain to me if I need to copy the photos themselves to their new location before I restore catalogue - or not.  And which option in restore to use.  I thought I explained this in my original question.  Any help on these questions about matters I do not understand will be appreciated.

  • What is the best way to transfer my iphoto library from old imac to new imac. both have iphoto 9.2.1

What is the best way to transfer my iphoto library from current imac to my new imac.  Both imacs have iphoto 9.2.1
os on old imac is 10.6.8.   os on new imac is 10.7.2.   I want the albums  and events to stay intact.  I have 4500 photos and 79 videos. 14.9 gb. looking for some advice here. Thanks so much.

Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

  • How to transfer Painter 12 with my custom brushes from old iMac to a new iMac both running Mavericks

    Hi,
I just purchased a new iMac. Have Painter 12 on my older iMac and want to be able to transfer Painter 12, with my custom brushes to my new iMac. Tried Airdrop but got a message that it was damaged and that I should trash it. Does any know how to get  Painter 12 with all my custom brushes to my new machine? Both are running Mavericks.
    Thank you,
    Jim

    etresoft,
Thank you for your response. I did try to use Migration Assistant and I got as far as the two machines trying to communicate with each other. So I guess the answer to your question would be I tried, I failed and it worked until a certain point. I understand that there are other ways to connect the machines, I would have to see if I have the proper cables to do so. Airdrop did get data to my new machine and that tells me that they do see each other on the network. I do not know why they did not see each other via Migration Assistant. I assume that I could go to Corel's site and download Painter 12 to my new machine, ( my new machine does not have a disk drive ), but I will not have my custom brushes etc. and would have to totally make them up in the fresh install version and I am trying to avoid that.
You are probably correct in saying that Painter 12 probably needs a full reinstallation to work properly. Am I to assume that Migration Assistant will do a full reinstallation, including my custom brushes? I guess I am a little confused here.

  • TS1591 My iPhone 5 was originally backed up to another computer (that is now dead) and my new computer won't recognize it.  So how do I get the new computer to recognize it?

I'm trying to back-up my iPhone to iTunes, but when the phone is plugged in it does not register as a device in iTunes.
The phone is receiving a charge from the computer.
All of my software is up to date.
I am using a computer other than the one I last backed the phone up with (my old laptop crashed, now I'm working off of my new iMac).
How do I get the computer to recognize the phone so I can do a back-up?

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.
Use your backup copy of your computer to put everything on the new one.
It sounds like you have failed to do this, which is not good at all.
You will have to transfer your itunes purchases from your iphone.  Authorize your computer for your itunes account
About iTunes Store authorization and deauthorization
Open itunes, plug in iphone, do NOT sync, click File>Transfer Purchases
When you do sync you will lose your pics ( photo library - synced from your old computer), your itunes content ( music, apps, videos, etc) , your contacts and your calendars.  So do NOT sync yet.  This is why a backup copy is so important.
Enter one unique contact and calendar entry on your computer.
When you first sync, you should get the option to merger the data.  Choose it.
If you want your pics, then you will need to e-mail them to yourself before you sync.  They will not be of the original quality as they are reduced when synced to iphone.
When all is as goos as it can be, then backup your computer, and always maintain the backup.

  • New iMac, can't open safari after migration

Moved files from old iMac (2006) to new iMac (bought yesterday) that was running itunes music off of an external hard drive. Move seemed successful, and I re-attached external hard drive but Itunes would not open, saying itunes was a "newer version" than what was on new iMac already. Did software update and it did not finish the update, saying try again. Second time, it completed update, updating itunes and then the new iMac was able to read the external hard drive fine. I tested a few songs and itunes found them and played them fine, all artwork ok, etc.
So, then I tried to open Safari and it told me it could not run this version of Safari on the new iMac OSX. Tried the update software trick again, but it still will not open, same message. Under Safari preferences, it shows two default Safari versions, 5.0.4 i thinkg and 5.1.1 (i think) [I am at work now].  I can get around this and get to the internet fine by double clicking my Amazon MP3 icon, which asks if i want to quit and go to website to update, where i am then on amazon.com and have all my bookmarks etc listed on web browser just like before and it works fine...So how can i get icon or safari to open from dock or desktop? I have not tried to download new safari from apple website yet to see if that works to overwrite the others...Am i missing something simple? Can i just delete safari in applications and re-download it or should i run disk utility or ?  Thanks for the help.  jw

    Hi Simon...
Have two different versions of Safari on your Mac won't work.
So how can i get icon or safari to open from dock or desktop?
    new iMac (bought yesterday)
The only way to reiinstall Safari on Lion v10.7 is to use Lion Recovery which will reinstall the Mac OS X.
Can i just delete safari in applications and re-download it or should i run disk utility or ?
    No.

  • New iMac problem with log in, start up assistant

Just got a new iMac and used Set Up Assistant to transfer files and settings from my Mac mini (Tiger). I am now getting a log in screen prompting for a password. On my Mac mini, I never assigned a password to the machine since I am the only user. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to log onto the new iMac without entered a password. Can anyone direct me on how to either disable or reset the password on the new iMac?

Boot off the Leopard DVD and select (after you've chosen a language, and after the installer has appeared) from the Utilities menu in the menu bar at the top of the screen (which may not appear until after you have moved the mouse up there) the reset password utility. That will allow you to reset the password.

  • I bought a new iMac.  iWeb and all folders migrated over, no problem, but I cannot bring up my website - it only seems to allow for creating a new site.

I bought a new iMac.  iWeb and all its folders migrated over, no problem, but I cannot bring up my website - it only seems to allow for creating a new site.

You need the 'Domain' file in which iWeb keeps its data. This lives by default in (user)/Library/Application Support/iWeb. You need to locate it on the old machine and copy it to the same position in the new machine. Note that it is the Library folder in your Home folder, not the one at root level.
This folder is hidden on Lion and above; to access it, in the Finder go to the ‘Go’ menu and hold down the Option (Alt) key; the Library folder will appear as a choice. In Mavericks you can make it permanently visible - open your Home Folder the from the Finder's View menu, choose show View Options and check Show User Library.

  • My new iWeb won't recognize my website, gives error message

UPDATE: After more reading, I found the only ".sites" file I have on my computer (Library/Application Support/iWeb/Domain.sites2), and opened it in iWeb, which prompted me to choose a background for my site as if I were creating a site.  It looks like I'm missing this .sites file for the website I already made.
Is there a way to recreate this .sites file?  Does it exist on my remote server?
    Thanks for your help.
    Old news:
I upgraded to Snow Leopard, and my friend installed it for me.  He made a backup of all my files, but may not have used Time Machine.
Now iWeb won't recognize the website I created in iWeb.  My website's folder appears in my directory under "Sites", and all files appear to be there.
When I open iWeb, it says "Can't open file "~/Sites/[mywebsitename]/assets.http:--www.mywebsitename.com.plist" then immediately closes.
    Message was edited by: Bulletproof_tgr

If you're trying to open one of your published site files then that's why you're getting that message.  iWeb can't read html files.
Is the size of the Domain.sites2 file large indicating it contains your site and its components. A new domain file with just 1 page will be around  200 KB.  If the size of the file indicates that it is your domain file
    Try the following:
    close iWeb.
delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
go to your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder and delete its contents.
    reboot.
    launch iWeb and try again.
If that doesn't help continue with:
move the domain file from your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder to the Desktop.
launch iWeb, create a new test site, save the new domain file and close iWeb.
go to the your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder and delete the new domain file.
move your original domain file from the Desktop to the iWeb folder.
    launch iWeb and try again.
If you can't find a backup copy of the Domain.sites2 file that existed before the installation of SL you'll have to recreate your site from scratch.  Chapter 2.3 on the iWeb FAQ.org site has tips on using some of the existing files, image, audio, video, etc., from the published site in the recreation of the site.
