New in SAP - What additional skills are necessary?

Hi all,
I have recently done an internal move in my company and soon I am going to support SAP applications. I have been working , so far, for > 5  years supporting high availability e-Commerce J2EE applications.
From my first look on several forums I am a bit confused whether my acquired skills would be enough - in addition to the SAP training which I will get soon- in order to support SAP applications. Moreover, my main concern is whether I should get more involved on Java development, where the only practical experience is from university projects.
From what I see , having some development and scripting skills, combined with the SAP knowledge is highly required and is much more compensative than being a pure SAP system administrator.
What is your 2 cents on this issue?
Thanks in advance,

Hi Subhasha,
thanks a lot for your comprehensive response. Indeed, my main supporting tasks on the e-Commerce J2EE applications so far were configuration and tuning tasks , since coding is completely done from another department within the organization. Of course I have had strong knowledge (theoretical) of the JAVA technology and how java coding is done but I did not get the chance in my company to code. On the other hand I see that good SAP consultants here in Germany are the ones who perform coding along with the administration tasks, while they customize the SAP modules.
Let's see, I will start next month and I will see how it will go. The more I will learn the better view about SAP support I will get.
Kind regards,
Loukas

  • What Additional Services Are Necessary To Install?

Hi everyone, we just recently started working with the JDeveloper application and are pretty new with all of this so sorry if this is a really 'newb' question but we are trying to plan ahead for licensing and installation purposes.
A co-worker of mine has been working with JDeveloper to write some small custom internal web apps that would pull information from our production 10g database that is on a separate server and allow users to add some information that our ERP system doesn't allow them to do via its interface. The information is pretty much just for internal reporting right now on some very specific items.
We love the app so far and are excited about the potentials of JDeveloper to tie up some loose ends that our ERP system doesn't offer us. He is able to deploy the app straight off of his Windows XP machine and users would be capable of navigating to it. However ideally we would want it hosted on a server.
I fired up a Win 2008 x64 virtual server and installed some apps he had recommended. Web Logic Server 10.3.4 and he was able to sync his JDeveloper client up with this and publish projects to it but they wouldn't start up properly. He then provided me some installation instructions from some Oracle.com documents that instructed me to do the following:
    Install Oracle Web Center
    Install Repository Creation Utility
    Install Oracle Database software
As it all turns our first thing I had to do was install an Oracle DB. I tried the Oracle XE but then RCU gave errors that appeared to be caused by XE's lack of certain tables. I then installed the trial of 11g and RCU installed with a few bugged options. I then began the battle with Web Center (which had previously prompted me for RCU first).
As we are fighting these issues I really wanted to reach out to the community/specialists and find out if you think we actually need all/any of these things for the internal apps we are making. These apps shouldn't be 'mission critical' by any means right now and they deploy fine from my co-workers jdeveloper launch. Ideally we would like the capability to allow people to leverage their login from our production 10g server but that isn't necessary at this moment.
Any general direction or advice would be helpful. I attempted to get Oracle on the phone to point us in a direction but they passed us off to some standard sales department that was trying to sell us hardware :P

What type of technologies are used in these apps?
Does it use any WebCenter related stuff?
If the answer is yes, than you need to install WebCenter as well.
Installation guide and other useful information can be found here: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E17904_01/webcenter.htm

None are '''''necessary''''' to use Firefox, but some parts of some web pages aren't going to work without a specific plugin being installed.

  • What additional resources are required to do the TestStand training courses I and II?

I have the TestStand course manuals for courses I and II and am currently trying to refresh what I learned a couple of months ago when I took the courses.  I'm at the point where almost every VI required comes up broken because additional libraries are required in LabVIEW.  Why aren't the additional required libraries listed in the course documentation?  What are the additional libraries and how do I get them?

    Hi there!
If I had to guess I would say that you're missing the TS support API libraries for LabVIEW... Since those are the only 'special' libraries used by any of the examples in the TestStand 3.x or 4.x training manuals.
I'm going to assume that you have some recent version of LabVIEW (8.x?) and some recent version of TestStand (3.x) installed? Unless you took the NI training course more than a few years ago, in which case you might need earlier version of TS, LabVIEW version really shouldn't matter. Evaluation copies ought to be sufficient so I wouldn't blame those...
(If you don't have LabVIEW at all. Make sure you have the correct LabVIEW Run Time Engine version, as that's a pretty common source of TS errors... But without LabVIEW half of the exercises in the training manual are moot anyway...)
In your LabVIEW install path, (C:\ program files etc...\LabVIEW 8.x\)  look for the folder path "vi.lib\addons\TestStand\", it ought to be full of a few *.llb files that TS would furnish to LabVIEW when the product is installed.  Sometimes when you install things in an unexpected order, or if you have multiple LVs installed, these items don't get put where you expect.
If the folder is empty, copy what you need from... the TestStand install path (C:\ program files etc...\TestStand x.x\) folder "AdapterSupport\LabVIEW" and restart LV. This might get you up and running.
If the folder is not empty. Try running a MassCompile from your LabVIEW Tools ->Advanced menu, there might be a version incompatibility issue...
Feel free to send me an email if you're still stuck. But there aren't any external dependencies/hardware drivers needed for the TS training sequences...
    Cheers!

  • BODS / SAP : what set-ups are required for communicating with each other ?

    Hi.
There is a new SAP system
And there is a new BODS installation.
Both on independent server machines but on the same lan network.
On the test system of BODS. We tried to see how the communication happens with SAP.
While we try some test jobs by trying to pull a simple table on SAP R/3
In Dataflow, we used simple SAPR/3 ABAP flow. And put it into target database thro query transformation.
    In the datastore,
We used the Generate and Execute option,
with a path on the local directory of BODS server for creating the ABAP program and the dat file.
    However,
We are always getting error on batch job schedule.
Although the user is having rights on the R/3 table
And can login into SAP R/3 system and check the table.
Still we get an error saying Databstore unabel to connect to R/3 system. Check for user login etc.
For anyone whose login we use. We get the error.
However, if i directly generate the code on the ABAP flow (without running the job),
make the program available on R/3 system.
and then run the job as execute preloaded
this works fine without any error.
and we are able to see the data in the target table.
Now both the systems are new.
And am not aware of the initial set-ups which are required for communication between SAP / BODS.
Are WE missing something on the SAP side setups - for generate and execute option to be used?
Is there anything specific to be done for ease of the communication between SAP server and BODS server in this regard.
Can anyone share some inputs on this.
Actually for any user with full admin rights too, on the sap side, if we use the user login for R/3 connectivity for this particular "generate and execute" option,  it errors out after nearly 10 minutes. Then the error says, login info not correct.
So basically, the communication channel by itself between SAP R/3 and BODS seems to be locked somewhere.
If anyone with SAP admin expertise - can help or advise on this.
    Many thanks
    Indu

Getting data out of R/3 requires two distinct setup tasks, and they don't have much to do with each other.
The first basic task is to get the little ABAP extraction programs loaded and run in R/3.  You can pre-load them and then call them, or generate, upload, and execute them all on-the-fly, at BODS runtime.  During development, use "Generate and Execute" for your ABAP.
Once that's done, you have four different choices to get the data back: "Direct download", "Shared directory", FTP, and "Customer Transfer". Normally, you'll use either FTP or "Shared directory".  Refer to the documentation (the BODS SAP Supplement) for a description of all this.
In all cases (or at least, quite certainly, using the FTP and Shared Directory methods), the ABAP extraction programs are directed to plop their output as flat files in the "Working directory on SAP server."  For testing, you can look in that folder to see if any flat files are appearing when you submit an ABAP data flow.  If not, then either 1) your ABAP program isn't getting in there (a Basis admin should be able to tell you), or 2) it's not running (ditto), or 3) it's running but unable to generate the output file (ditto), because a) SAP isn't permitted to write to that folder, or b) the folder doesn't exist (it needs to be defined from the perspective of the SAP server).
If you do see files appear in the "Working directory on SAP server" when you run a BODS job w/ an ABAP dataflow, then the problem is that BODS can't fetch them.  If you're using the "Shared directory" method, which is suitable for and often used in all-Windows environments, then the account under which the Job Server in question is running must have access to the "Working directory on SAP server," but this time from the perspective of the Job Server.  So if, for instance, SAP was directed to put the flat files on a local folder, say, "E:\USR\SAP\BODS", then you might want to share this folder out as, for instance,
sapdev1\bods (for an SAP host called "sapdev1"), and then enter "
sapdev1\bods" in the "Application path to shared directory" field, in your SAP datastore configuration.  If your Job Server service is logging-in as "Local System," though, it won't be able to get there -- it needs to log-in as an AD domain account w/ rights to that share.  Get it?  Try logging in to your BODS job server computer with the AD "service account" setup for use by the Job Server service, and try to open a file on the "Application path to shared directory". If you can't, then BODS won't be able to get data from ECC, either.  FTP works similarly -- if you're using that and having trouble, please re-post.

  • What preinstalled programs are necessary for S10-3T?

Hi, I recently purchased a S10-3T and upgraded from Win 7 Starter to Win 7 Premium.
I'm wondering what programs are actually vital to keep, and what is just bloatware?
I know that Win 7 Premium has touchscreen integration, so is there Lenovo software I can now uninstall bc it does a similar thing?
For ex. I see programs like Cando Touch and Lenovo Natural Touch.. can these be uninstalled?
Also Lenovo software like: FirstBOot, Idea Central, Idea Notes, ReadyComm 5, Screen Rotation...
Are any of these programs vital for proper functioning? I'm just not sure what is needed to keep and what I can get rid of since I ihave upgraded to Win7 Premium.
Also Veritouch.. is there a point to keep it?
    Thanks in advance.. much appreciated

you can uninstall bloatware like firstboot, idea central, readycomm 5, ms office trial, veriface, veritouch. Natural touch can be deleted on the c: drive folder. Lenovo autorotate is for the screen rotation only in tablet mode.
Clean install always the best option.

  • What hardware specs are necessary to run lion OS X

I have a macbook pro intel core 2 duo with 2 gb ram, what is the most advanced os I can run on this machine? I have 10.5.8 currently.

    Yes, you can run Lion.
2GB is the minimum required RAM. You might upgrade it for better performance. I have 2GB on my 2006 MacBook, and it runs at a fairly good speed, but you can't have that many programs open at once without it really slowing down.

  • Additional skills required to administer & configure AC 10.0

    Greetings-
A dumb question for those involved in ramp up implementation- suppose, someone knows how to administer and configure AC 5.x and now with the release of AC 10.0, what additional skills one would further require to handle in and out of Ac 10.0. So far have heard new release is quite a complex scenarios compared to AC 5.x. Just wondering what's and how much there inside AC 10.0.
    Thanks,

In order to migrate from GRC 5.3 to GRC AC 10 you'll install an export tool (java add-on).
During export one can provide filtering rules (for example filter a system or a ruleset etc). The exported files get then imported on the GRC 10 ABAP backend. More configuration is done using SPRO/IMG and eventually BC-Sets.
GRC 5.3 CUP workflows export/import doesn't probably do the full job, as workflows are configured in ABAP quite differently - partially with BRF+.
The good news: No more Java with GRC AC 10 (except if you need Adobe forms ...).
If during the transition you want to analyse a system with both servers GRC 5.3 and with GRC 10, you need:
    GRC 5.3 SP14 or greater
    GRC 10 SP4 or greater.

  • What skills are needed to manage Exalogic?

    Hi there
Please let me know if I should be directing this question to another Forum and which Forum it should be.
We are thinking of purchasing Exalogic with a view to having a private Cloud.
What skills are needed or teams in order to manage Exalogic in-house?
I've used google but not really found the answers other than a couple of Oracle docs which suggest sys admins teams, network teams, etc could all have a hand in the management as they currently exist.
However, Management are wondering if a new team needs to be formed and what skills that team should have.
As we already have Exadata under the DBA team they are wondering if the skills the DBAs have will also apply for Exalogic.
    Thanks.

  • The future of java and what is the most necessary skill to learn

    hi, friends,
This is a serious question, so please answer seriously.
    1. The future of java
Are there any future for java? What I mean are: are there any jobs for java developer in the future? are there any chances for new java company to survive?
    2. What is the most needed skill in so many java technology?
There are so many sections in java technology. so what is the most needed one for one to find a job? what is the most promising section for one to build a company.
    Thank your very much!

    It's a lousy question really.
    1) There are very few companies you'd call a 'java company'. There are companies that use java, but they also by and large use C++, DBMS systems, and a whole host of other technologies. If java died, they'd switch to whatever technology killed it. Any decent programmer is flexible enough to learn a new language in a matter of weeks. It's the ability to work with the theory behind the code rather than the knowledge of syntax that's important.
    2) It depends entirely on what you're doing. Working with a company where databases are key? Then you need Oracle, or SQL. Working with web technology? Perl, JSP, PHP, stuff like that is what you want. Working in high performance application design? You need C++. Graphics? Take a look at OpenGL or Java3d.
The most promising section to build a company? If there was a straight answer to that 1000 companies would have sprung up already and filled the niche.
Basically, if you want a successful career in programming, don't become a java programmer, become a programmer full stop. If you think you'll be working with java when you retire in 40-odd years you're mistaken. You need to grasp the basic concepts of application and algorithm design, and be quick to learn new technologies and evaluate them against what exists already.
It can take 3 years to go from complete newbie to fluent in a single programming language. It can then take less than 3 days to become fluent in another.
