MapmyIndia.com offers Sygic mobile maps (http://inav.mapmyindia.com/product/sygic/sygic_mobile_maps.html) claims to have intuitive design, easy to read as you drive, crystal-clear spoken voice instructions and route guidance with map coverage of 401 cities all over India. What is also claimed is MapmyIndia Sygic mobile maps, once installed, are stored on your phone/SD card. This means that you do not require a GPRS or data connection to get them working. What's more, there are no subscription or recurring charges. The one time cost is 55 US Dollars which would be a great saving as I often use the map while in Indian roads. This provides me a better option compared to Nokia Maps which I like but is expensive and Google Maps which doesnt yet come with turn by turn voice guidance for Sybian 5 platforms (only available in Android 2).
The customer care of MapmyIndia mentioned that it is totally compatible with my new Nokia N97. However, I would like to find out if any of you have used this service and if it affects the performance of the phone (speed, memory, crashing etc) in any way. How does Nokia looks at such third party alternatives?

Dear cjlim, Thanks for the input. Well, in terms of updated maps, the google can't be matched. However, Nokia map updates do not necessarily cover all the rapid changes thats taking place all over India. As per your suggestion I had a chat with the customer service rep of mapmyIndia and the response are as following which says the update is every six months and it could be downloaded free.

Turn off voice guidance

Somehow the voice guidance feature was turned on and I can't figure out how to get it off. It provides audio details for all new open windows.
Not sure what is is exactly called.

That's VoiceOver. You can turn it off from System Preferences - Universal Access (or Accessibility in 10.8) - VoiceOver. Or use the keyboard shortcut command-F5.

HT5429 Is there a way to turn off the turn-by-turn navigation voice from the map app itself without ending the directions?

I know that it is possible to turn off the voice for turn-by-turn directions completely (in the settings menu), but is there a way to temporarily silence the voice from the maps app itself? For example, if I am driving to the freeway from my house I know how to get there and do not want my phone talking to me, but I would like to keep the directions active and turn on the voice once I need it later in the directions. Is there an easy way to do this without going to the settings app each time?

I don't think there's any way to do it, but I'd like that feature as well: on long trips I listen to an audiobook and when I'm travelling routes that I already know well, I mostly want to use navigation to route around any traffic that might occur.
In both cases, the voice directions aren't welcome, and I can get by with the on-screen display… and in other GPS navigation software or hardware I've had, muting the voice was an easily accessed option. (Garmin USA on the iPhone, for example, has a 'mute' icon available right on the maps display).
I've requested that feature at http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html - you may wish to do the same.

That is correct. The iphone 4 does not have Siri, thus you will not get the voice for maps.

How do I make the new Maps app do a turn-by-turn preview of my route?

I'm not really bothered by the cosmetic changes to Maps, I figure those will sort themselves out.
BUT. I don't want real-time turn-by-turn directions. Do not want. I want to be able to make the app move step by step through my upcoming route so I can look several turns ahead. This is not something that should have been affected by the loss of Google's resources, and I'm going to be livid if there's really no way to make the app move beyond my current physical location to look at the next step. Please tell me there's a way to do this.
(I'm not referring to the text list of steps. I know I can view that. Please tell me how to make the actual map progress to the next turn before I actually get there.)

The iphone 5 manual seems to imply that the ability to swipe throught turns is limited to earlier phones:
View turn-by-turn directions (iPhone 4 or earlier): Tap Start, then swipe left to see the next instruction (pg80)
I too would be pretty disappointed to learn that the ability to swipe through the turns is no longer available. ( I suspect disappointment is in my future.)

Google maps turn by turn directions no longer interrupts iTunes music player in iOS7

I often use Google Maps app when I travel while simultaneously listening to music. I have my iPhone connected to my car stereo via the Lightning port. In iOS6, when Google would give turn by turn directions the music volume would duck and the voice guided navigation would play through the car stereo. After updating to iOS7, this feature no longer works. With both iTunes and Google Maps open, the music volume is always dimmed and voice guided navigation is always off.
I do not notice this issue with Apple's Maps app. So far it appears to work properly and I am using this as a work around. However there are several reasons I favor Google Maps as a superior solution for the moment. For example, if I ask for directions to a specific location such as a local business Google is able to provide this information 90% of the time. By comparison, the same query with Siri usually results in having to search the web for an address first and then having to go back and ask for directions to that specific street address. It is a minor inconvenience, but it is enough of a hassle that I tend to stick with the better content of Google Maps for now.
Perhaps this bug is iOS7 related or perhaps the issue is with the Google Maps app. Either way, I am reporting because I'd love to see it fixed. I have noticed several bugs (this being one of many that I am reporting) since upgrading to iOS7 which has been very disappointing. I am a huge Apple advocate and this has not been the experience of "It just works" that I have come to expect from my Apple products. It is because I care so much about the Apple ecosystem that has made my work and play so much more enjoyable that I will take the time to report these in hopes that Apple will take notice and that subsequent updates will address these issues.

I never did. Partly I believe it's the interaction with my car's bluetooth connection and instructions it sends the phone when they connect. It seems like if I actively QUIT all applications that could play audio (SiriusXM, Podcasts, Music), then I can get the directions without any music. (That said, the SiriusXM app doesn't always play nice. If any of these are open, not even playing, then they start up when I select bluetooth audio on my car stereo. But I still can't tell the audio to stop without it muting either Google Maps or Apple's Maps. They both behave the same way.

I love the turn-by-turn directions. But some of the mistakes the new iOS-6 maps (the Apple version that replaces the Google Maps app) - they're the sign of an immature product. Are other people finding the same?
Examples of what I got int the Apple iOS-6 maps application:
1) In Hood River, Oregon (with location awareness on), I searched for Tucker -- I was expecting to get Tucker County Park (3 miles away). The results I got were Tucker, Georgia, Tuckers Rock, Bellingen NSW (Australia), Tucker Hills, Brooksville FL. Totally useless. I was looking for results near me, not world wide. Google maps immediately found the one closest to me as the first result (the correct location, Tucker County Park).
2) In Rockaway Beach, Oregon, I searched for directions to Nehalem Bay State Park campground. The iPhone iOS-6 mapping app gave me directions to a location in Brighton, Oregon, across the bay from the state park - 9.5 miles short of the actual destination (you have to drive around the bay to get there). The comment at the top of the map was "This route ends on the road nearest to the selected destination.". Of course, Google maps got me all the way there, taking me the rest of the distance around the bay, through all the turns and intersections to get me to my destination.
Am I the only one thinking - cool product, but not yet ready for prime time? What happened Apple? This is very disappointing, and not up to snuff.

Apple is aware, and they have issued a statement to that effect. They're working it.

How do I get routing data from the Map App (powered by TomTom) so I can display the point-to-point annotations (turn-by-turn navigation) without leaving my own application.

I have a tableView displaying a list of contacts from a Cloud Database. After selecting a contact, I push to a programmatically created MKMapView. Then I display the initial region (the view) that includes the users current location (starting point) and their selected destination (end point).
Now I want to display annotations (as described in the Location Awareness Programming Guide) that displays polylines which will represent the turn-by-turn navigation IN MY OWN APPLICATION, and not in the Map App currently used in IOS6.
Due to licensing and its becoming depricated in IOS 6, I do not want to get routing data from the Google Maps API. How do I get routing data from the IOS 6 Map App (powered by TomTom) so I can display the point-to-point annotations (turn-by-turn navigation) without leaving my own application?
I checked out Stack Overflow and other forums which basically left me with the impression that this is not possible. I also checked out the TomTom iPhone Mobile SDK User Guide from the TomTom Developer Portal and am still confused. It must be possible to retrieve routes, since the Map App can display turn-by-turn directions. How can I retrieve turn-by-turn data that I may display as a route within my own application?

Thanks Michael. Apologies for the slow reply I was away for a bit (holiday blitz at work and visiting family madness etc.etc.) back now, I set both options you requested to "never " and retried the CMS software with no change.
I do have progress of a sort though, as a test I took a separate test PC and put a clean install of Win7 on and loaded up the CMS software (it worked perfectly) and then took the version of ole32.dll off that machine and put it onto the computer I had built
for her (using Linux) and...
got a new error code. Darn I was so sure I had found a clever solution this time lol.
Anyway now when the CMS fails it gives me a similar error but the offending module is "ntdll.dll" sooo... I tried taking the "working" version of ntdll.dll from the test box and moving it over (making sure to back up the existing ones
first so I could put them back if needed) to her new PC and the PC would not boot.
It seems to want the original versions of a few Dynamic Link Libraries and if I could somehow give it those while not breaking Win7 it should theoretically work seeing as it no longer errors with ole32.dll.
ntdll.dll however seems necessary for Win7 to boot.
So what I am wondering now is:
Is there some way to have both versions of the DLL file in the system32 folder (bypassing the "cannot have two files with the exact same name in the same folder" thing) or rename the original DLL's something else and somehow make the CMS look for
the new named versions so the system has the updated DLL's it needs to boot/run and the CMS has the old ones it wants to run or is there someway to have a self contained install of the CMS, say on a USB flash drive and give it it's own E:/windows/system32/needed
dll's path to the files it needs?
Willing to try any other options or settings you may have come up with as well.

HT5429 Why is Saudi Arabia not supported on Map's turn-by-turn feature?

The new feature of iOS' Map which is turn-by-turn instruction is a great added feature. However, this only applies to selected countries. Since i am new here in KSA (Saudi Arabia), this feature would really help me a lot in navigating through the city. Is there any chance apple can add the map of saudi arabia on the turn-by-turn feature?

How to turn off the voice over in Mac Pro

I somehow turned on the voice over on my macpro, and it is repeating everything i am doing on my notebook. please help me to turn it off..

You can turn it on/off via System Preferences, Universal Access (older OS) or Accessibility (newer OS).
There will be also a keyboard shortcut for on/off toggle. Mine is command-F5.

Turn by turn directions with ios6 map aren't coming through my bluetooth.

I don't get turn by turn directions with the new ios6 map through my bluetooth. My bluetooth shows up on the on the map and it's checked. When I check phone I get audio through the phone. When I check bluetooth I get no audio. My bluetooth continues to work fine for calls.

Same issue in my 2011 Highlander with iPhone 5. Both Toyota and Apple blame the other guy. I use the same workaround mentioned above: play an audio track through the music app and turn-by-turn will play as well. It also lowers the music for you when giving directions. I actually took this one step further and made a blank mp3 file that I play on repeat for when I just want turn-by-turn without the distraction of music. This workaround works with any app that streams audio, e.g. I use Slacker Radio as well. Similarly, niether Google Maps, nor MapQuest will provide turn-by-turn audio without music streaming. Let's hope they fix this.

According to you youo did not do what I instructed - you said you imported the old library into th enew library which can easily take a 2000 photo library and turn it into 12,000 including two ro three versions of each photo pus all the face thumbnails
The correct procedure has NO importing involved
drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac

I was messing arouond with the general settings and I turned on the voice (under General settings) and when the screen timed out, I can't get it to take my 4 number passcode to get into my ipad. Please help! I'm totally locked out!

I would appreciate any help I can get. I was just messing around with the general setting on the ipad (64GB 3G...1st edition ipad), and did not realize that if I went under the general settings and changed the option to turn "on" the voice over, that it would require a double click on everything automatically. I have my ipad set up to lock after 2 minutes on non-use, and when I tried to sign back in, it said that my 4 digit passcode was incorrect. Then I tried to double click on each number, and that didn't seem to work. The numbers 1-9 seemed to input ok, but a zero seemed to throw it off. I have no idea if it has anything to do with it, but any help on getting back in to my ipad, I would greatly appreciate it, and I will be turning off that stupid voice over off as soon as I can. I was just goofing off, and was not going to let it stay on permenantely, but I tried to go back under the settings immediately, and I couldn't easily find it, but if someone could help on just getting me back in....I would owe you a big favor!

Touch or tap the field that you want to use/select and it should get a box around it ; then double-tap that field to activate/type it. Once you've entered your password you can do the same (i.e. touch to select, double-tap to activate) to gradually get into Settings > General > Accessibility > VoiceOver and turn it off.
So to enter your passcode you first need to tap the 'slide to unlock' button to hightlight it (it should get a box around it), then double-tap it to unlock it. Then for your passcode tap the digit that you want and it should get a box around it; then double-tap that digit to type it; and similar for the other three digits in your passcode.
The manual (http://support.apple.com/manuals/#ipad) also that you should be able to switch voice-over off by connecting to your computer's iTunes :
Turn VoiceOver on or off in iTunes: Select iPad in the iTunes sidebar. In the Options section of the Summary pane, click Configure Universal Access. Select VoiceOver, then click OK.
So select Configure Universal Access at the bottom of the Summary tab and set Seeing to Neither
