New Infinity 2 installation - speed lower than exp...

Hi
I switched across from O2/Sky ADSL to Infinity 2 on 27 March. BT estimated the DL speed range for my line as 47-65Mbps.
The Openreach chap (contractor) was reluctant to change the faceplate because I already have an ADLSNation XTE-2005 filtered faceplate and it was proving a little tough to remove. He said this would probably be ok as it's 'fairly modern'.  Muttered something about it delaying his next job.
I've read various comments about the compatibility of the XTE-2005 faceplate for vDSL.
He went away to do the cabinet stuff and returned to hook up the Homehub 5. While waiting for the hub to boot up I asked what speed he'd got at the cabinet. Blank stare. Oh, he said, I just check it on my iphone! Anyway, he did this and got a speed of around 31Mbps, less than expected but not a very good test over wireless. Thought it might pick over the next couple of days.
Now, I thought that initial line training period is 10 days, but the HH5 booklet talks about the line settling after 3 days. Which is right?
After  5 days, I've re-synced twice since installation and the BTW speed tester now shows the DL has crept up to 33.39 with an IP profile of 34.28. Obviously still nowhere near even the lower end of the range they estimated.
So ... do I need to wait for the full 10 days before complaining and/or mucking about with testing via the test socket etc ?  I feel if I was going to get anywhere near the estimated speed range, I'd have got there by now.
I stupidly expected the Openreach engineer to check the speed at the cab and compare it with the speed at my faceplate to make sure I'm getting the best possible speed. Maybe this investigation needs to be done properly now.
I'm about 200 yards from the cab and my line quality may not be great. If they test properly and this is all I can get, then  fine, but I'm not prepared to pay for Infinity 2 when I'm not even getting Infinity 1 speeds.
Any advice welcome. Many thanks.
Ian.

  • New Infinity installation is slower than ADSL - Su...

BT just rolled out Superfast broadband in my area so I signed up with BT. I was promised 13Mbps/1Mbs which was disappointing as it's nowehhere near the 'Superfast' speeds that BT advertise. I already have an ADSL line from TalkTalk which tests out at about 6.5Mbs/0.8Mbps so even though I will be paying 50% more at least I was promised that I would get double the speed. If only that were true!
A brand new line was run to the house on 20/5/2015 & the BT Homehib installed. However the speed is only 5Mbps/1Mbps & has not changed since installation. I immediately called customer support on the day of installation but they say there is nothing wrong with my line but clearly there is as I am not getting anywhere near a 'Superfast' speed not even the same speed as my exisiting ADSL line.
What do I need to do to escalate this & get the problem sorted? Clearly I don't intend paying 50% more to get an inferior 'Superfast' line from BT.

  • Is there a way to burn DVDs at speeds lower than 4x?

Hi to everybody. I need to burn DVDs at speeds lower than 4x (preferably 1x) but both Burn and LiquidCD (together with Disk Utility) are unable to. I believe that this depends on the fact that alle these utilities rely on Apple's optical Burning Framework. Is there a way to get rid of this problem without needing to buy Toast or Disco (I very rarely burn CDs and an expense in this direction wouldn't be justifeied).
    TIA.

Insert a blank disc (it's not going to write, so the disc won't be wasted) then look in the "Disc Burning" section of System Profiler (Utilities folder). It will show the supported burning speeds for that disc in that drive. With my Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-115D and a Verbatim DVD-R 16X disc, it shows:
    Write Speeds: 4x, 6x, 8x, 12x, 16x, 20x
These speeds are determined by the drive and brand of disc, and cannot be changed by software. If you tried to run a drive at a slower speed, the drive's servo might not be able to keep the rotation smooth enough (so the dots are burned evenly spaced) without adding a heavy flywheel, and the laser would need to produce longer pulses at lower intensity. Laser diodes may quit when the power is reduced too much. For this drive, it must be the minimum power that laser will operate at, since the drive will burn DVD-RW discs at 1x or 2x. The RW must need more energy to burn each dot, so the laser power does not have to be reduced too much.
Why do you need to burn at slower speeds?
If you don't want to use DVD-RW, you may be able to find some older, lower speed DVD-Rs
    <http://www.netsoftmedia.com/paypalshop/princo1x.html>
You would have try one to see if they are compatible with modern burners.

  • New Infinity User/Speed Question

Hi All, I`m another newbie in here and also to the Infinity BB as well.
So Hello and Good Evening to you all. :-)
I had my Infinity installed on Monday Afternoon without a hitch I am pleased
to say and I have been lurking on the forums reading up over the last week
or so checking out the pitfalls and wrinkles I am likely to encounter.
I know this is an on going chestnut on here from all that I have read but when I
was given a over the phone (by a nice BT lady employee) speed test (I have had a new line installed
before getting Infinity) I was told I would get 37.5 meg down and over 8 meg upspeed of which I
    was obviously happy and impressed.
When the young man did a speed test on Monday I got a creditable around about 32 meg so that was fine.
I have been testing since then on and off and a few times its got back to 30 and over but mainly in the 20s
    and teens.
Tonight I did a test at about 20:06pm and got just 6.96 meg down what is that all about?
The Up speed had been mainly around 7-8 so I down have a problem with that at all but what about my dowload speed, the homehub is wired into my PC.
What do you suggest I do next as I dont really fancy waiting until the 10 days as it seems a bit convenient that date I am committed for 18 months!
Any help will be gratefully accepted.
    Andrew.

"Is that 15 sync or through put ?"
To be honest, I don't know.
I have been hovering around these forums for a couple of months, since Infinity came to my area, not sure whether to change over or not. I was forced into a decision when informed that my ISP was closing down (UKOnline), and I could move to Sky with 6 month free broadband. As I detest the whole Sky/Rupert Murdock organisation ........ here I finally am, on Infinity
Sorry, strayed a bit from the topic there. During this 'hovering' period, I swear that I've seen a post stating that 15 Mbit figure, but I cannot remember where it is, so cannot confirm or quote it.
Perhaps, based on the Speedtester results output, which states :-
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 12000-38717 Kbps
That it maybe the sync speed rather than the throughput. Either way, they are BOTH low, if true .....
    Cheers
Edit: @Monkey - I would regard sync speed as the speed negotiated between your router/modem and your ISP, and the throughput the actual speed OBTAINED when transferring files, taking into account the overheads of the protocols/methods used (losses)
Throughput always being less than the sync speed
When i was on ADSL2+ I would knock off around 15% for losses (overheads). So if I synced up at 12 MBits, I would expect to a get throughput of around 10.25 Mbits'ish, and this usually was the case. 12Mbits - 15% (1.8 MBits) = 10.2 Mbits. This 15% figure may not be relevant to Infinity, I would hope it would be less, but don't know.

  • New install - speeds lower than estimated

    Hello all,
Finally got my BT fibre optic installed having ordered just after Christmas.  No problems with the install and engineer was very efficient.
However, have just run speed tests and a little disappointed with what I'm getting so far.
Estimates before the install through the speed checker were 34.7Mb download, 5.9Mb upload.
Running actual speed test on BT wholesale speed tester are:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 22.79 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 16 Mbps-23.23 Mbps .
     Additional Information:
IP Profile for your line is - 23.23 Mbps
Upload speed achieved during the test was - 2.79Mbps
     Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 20 Mbps
Is this normal in the intial "learning" periods and will I see an increase or is this as good as it gets?
Quite a bit off as far as I can make out.
    Any advice appreciated.
EDIT:  Also I noticed that Inifinty 2 is no longer throttling p2p for customers who signed up after 1st Feb.  Would I still be throttled as I signed up before 1st Feb but set up after that date?  Ideally, I would like to have a no constraints service so recontratcing sooner rather than later would be in my best interest.

Still having the same speed and IP profile.  Coming up to a week after install and no change in speed or IP profile.  Don't think I've been having any disconnects so not sure if the DLM is doing what it's supposed.  Nevertheless, still a long way off estimated speeds I was quoted before joining.
From a test I just ran:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 22.13 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 16 Mbps-23.23 Mbps .
     Additional Information:
IP Profile for your line is - 23.23 Mbps
Upload speed achieved during the test was - 2.67Mbps

Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 20 Mbps
Are you doing the speedtests with a wired or wireless connection to the HomeHub?

  • New Infinity Installation. No internet connection ...

    Hi.
Had Infinity installed on Thursday afternoon and was initially impressed with 40Mb+ download and 15Mb upload speeds.
However, at about 5.30pm webpages stopped loading. Rebooted the HomeHub3 and was ok again for about 15 minutes but then nothing for the rest of the night.
Internet was back the next morning but same thing happened again last night until about 11.15pm when it was back as if nothing had happened. Whilst there is no access, the HomeHub shows 3 solid lights. It's like there is a connection but its so slow that webpages time out. Tried using wireless connection and wired through Powerline adaptors. Also tried connecting directly to the router.
So for 2 nights out of 2 I've had no access to the net which is obviously not acceptable. Can anyone suggest anything that I can try? I will have access to a new router later today so I will try using that.

Hiya - same thing has happened to me - go BT Infinity2 installed last Tuesday, all ok 48mb down 9+up until Fri 18th May when it dropped out and was v.slow. No internet until Saturday 19th during the day. Then 40+mb ok until 2330 Saturday 19th dropped out log shows CWMP:session connect host failed - again no internet until Sunday 19th - a call to 0800 111 4567 remedied the situation with "a fault at the exchange - working the the exchange" then I got 48mb dowm, 9mb up until.... 2330 on Sunday when the signal dropped out - like you, SensiBlue, three bluse lights and I can ping a server so theres a connection,  but the log again shows CWMP:session connect host failed and CWMPSL certificate error. No internet again all night - a further call to tech help merely resulted in the response than an engineer will come to my house - in four days time! to see if its a fault on my line. This hardly seems likely as I can ping out, and the line was checked - just 6bB loss only on Tuesday. I have tried a new router too - no difference. This intermittent fault seems to be fairly common on the forums too. Anyone got an idea? Like you say, SensiBlue, its not acceptable.

  • New Infinity Installation

Got Infinity on order, read the stuff - confused!
My master socket comes into the house at the front door - no power socket near there.  I have four wired extensions, all hidden cabling, all near power sockets.  So - how do I get the new hub without any surface wiring if it has to be near the incoming master socket?
My current BT hub is in the bedroom (office!) and of course with BT Vision have the plug ins
Definitely no surface running of cables either for power or for extensions.  If we need to have the master socket next to the hub and power, then there may be a need for external cable runs and drill through walls to fit a new socket.  Any ideas? And will the engineer play ball?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

the engineer can change any socket to become the master for free ask them when they arrive remember you need two power sockets available one for the hub one for the modem

  • New infinity connecton speed

After many years of strugglng with adsl our village has just had FTTC enabled. I am sure that there are no cross talk issues just yet and am wondering if my servcie is acceptable as it is nowhere near what I was expecting or told it may be when ordering.
The HH5, (not engineer fitted but plugged into master socket with flter) has been stable snce it was connected, and syncs just over 20/4 Mb/s
Could someone please look at the figures pasted below, partcularly the noise and attenuation.
Also the data sent/received seem much higher than I would have expected.
I am curious to find out why even the slowest quoted impacted speed is still half as much again as I am actually getting?

  • What is the reason behind upload speeds lower than...

Would anyone be able to explain it?

    Hi Jamesey162,
There is no reason as such. Different providers have different packages. It just depends on what package your on.
E.g, Infinity option 2 gives 20mb upload speed but infinity option 1 only gives up to 9.5mb upload speed.
    It basically varies with providers.
    Hope this helps,
    Dominic.

  • Infinity woes Speeds less than 1Mb/s!

    Please Help!
I've been back and forth with BTIndia for two weeks and I'm now starting to feel nothing will help me!
I've recently moved up from BTBroadband Option 3 to BTInfinity.
My main machine is a 2.66 GHz iMac connected to the HomeHub via Ethernet (I also connect a couple of PCs via Ethernet and Wifi).
The speed on ADSL was pretty consistent and acceptable - I could stream Youtube and the like and p2p was fast enough for me to download quickly. I could generally download up to 1.4MB/sec actual - which was fine.
The OpenReach engineer arrived on 20th December and assured me that the line from the Green Street Cab was good and I should expect speeds of 37.5 MB/s download, 10 MB/sec upload. I didn't seriously expect that but would have been happy with a speed bump of Double my previous speed. I didn't. Not by a long way!
He checked the line and confirmed a Line Speed of 38.5 MB/sec and went away. Didn't check my actual browster DL speed. It was appalling. After a day of buffering on any streamed video and App updates on my iPad that took hours instead of seconds I tried a couple of online Broadband Speed checkers and they all said the same thing. An upload speed of 7-8MB/sec (Fine!) and a download speed of Less that 1MB/sec!!!
I called BTIndia and they arranged (in fairness, quickly) an engineer call-out. He checked the equipment and said it was all fine and was stumped as to why my DL speed was SO slow. He thought maybe my IP profile had not been configured properly and after a long time got through to "somebody" who promised to check it. Upshot...Nothing changed.
Called BTIndia again...another engineer visit. He heard from the previous OpenReach guy that the Equipment/Line from Cab to socket was fine so he tried a "Bait and switch" - I THINK rewiring between the "Infinity" cab to the phoneline cab. I'm very vague on this so I may be wrong.
Lo and behold! Infinity speeds of 38 MB/s!!! Bliss.
Off he goes and 10 minutes later Bam! Back to 1MB/s!! What the?...
I've had ANOTHER OpenReach engineer visit on the 3rd January and the same story. Equipment is fine. Something somewhere is not configured correctly.
I am BEGGING!!! someone out there that has heard of a similar problem. Please...Is there a solution? What questions should I be asking BTIndia? I'm not an TCP/IP expect and nobody seems to know what to ask to whom?
Sorry the post is so long, but I wanted to make sure you had all the info.
    Cheers

  • Download speed lower than Dial Up

I am stumped. I am getting download speeds of 40 kbs or less from a plan that is 3355/751. Im no dummy I should average somewhere in the high 270's to 300kbs. It takes me 20 minutes to watch a 5 minute video with all the buffering. If I upload something, I am averaging 80kbs which I can live with. I only upload a video or 2.
I phoned support and they told me my modem was going bad and should get another one, then try that. Did that, no change. Call support and they said everything is in order on their end. They have no issues with my line and everything is reading fine with all line tests. There is only 1 phone line in the whole house. DSL is on it since we have to telephone number just a dedicated dsl line.
I am using a Actiontec Modem Router Combination. I am hoping to resolve this issue soon I am tired of going through a dead end support team that walks me through the same steps every time.
    Thanks

I assume you get the 3355/751 from the transceiver statistics. If that is correct, the problem isn't in your link between the Modem/Router and Verizon. That leaves the router itself, and your PC.
Check the security settings on the router to make sure you aren't doing anything there that slows you down> In addition software firewalls on your PC, and Anti-Virus software can seriously degrade network performance.
You might also want to run the speedtest/connection analyses from Argonne National Labs, which will tell you what your connection is capable of, and where the delays are.

since i had my infinity 2 connection set up on the 4th april 2014 i have experience multiple and regular drops in connection. happening every day or so.
i have also been getting much lower speeds than i should be getting. i was advertised 65mb down and 15mb up! i am currently getting 33mbps down and 6mbps up. this is round about the speed i have always got but it seems to be going down slowly (i was getting 37mbps straight after installation).
i have tried contacting bt multiple times and nothing has been done. i believe i need an engineer out to test the line in my street as there seems to be serious problems with my connectivity and i know it is not something to do with my internal wiring. i am using ethernet connection from my homehub 5 to my computer.
something needs to be done asap as i have been playing for infinity 2 speeds and i am currently getting speeds lower than infinity 1 speeds and with continual drops in connection. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE :s

    It is degrees C.
when the computer has a normal behavour with no CPU charge, its temp is about 35°C
but sometimes temp increase to 90°C and more.

He reckons i'm just too far from the Cabinet and would never get the speeds suggested in the ad and as below, so it looks like I am paying £5 a month just for BT Cloud.
Is best option just to contact BT and downgrade to Infinity 1 or would this slow me down even more/
Speed tests have been run over the last week at all times of day via wired connection straight into to HH3 and consistently come out at 24Mb
    Thanks
    Andy

How far from the cabinet are you. See graph for speed to distance.
Regardless of that, you are out side even the lowest speed Range B estimate.  You need to contact BT again and report that your speed is 24Mbps and your estimated speed should be between the Range A estimate of 39Mbps to 59Mbps and that you want another engineer, who is prepared to look for the fault and the reason you are not getting your estimated speed, rather than fob you of with an excuse about being to far from the cabinet.
If that was the case your estimated speed on the checker would reflect that.
