New Infinity User/Speed Question

Hi All, I`m another newbie in here and also to the Infinity BB as well.
So Hello and Good Evening to you all. :-)
I had my Infinity installed on Monday Afternoon without a hitch I am pleased
to say and I have been lurking on the forums reading up over the last week
or so checking out the pitfalls and wrinkles I am likely to encounter.
I know this is an on going chestnut on here from all that I have read but when I
was given a over the phone (by a nice BT lady employee) speed test (I have had a new line installed
before getting Infinity) I was told I would get 37.5 meg down and over 8 meg upspeed of which I
was obviously happy and impressed.
When the young man did a speed test on Monday I got a creditable around about 32 meg so that was fine.
I have been testing since then on and off and a few times its got back to 30 and over but mainly in the 20s
and teens.
Tonight I did a test at about 20:06pm and got just 6.96 meg down what is that all about?
The Up speed had been mainly around 7-8 so I down have a problem with that at all but what about my dowload speed, the homehub is wired into my PC.
What do you suggest I do next as I dont really fancy waiting until the 10 days as it seems a bit convenient that date I am committed for 18 months!
Any help will be gratefully accepted.
Andrew.

"Is that 15 sync or through put ?"
To be honest, I don't know.
I have been hovering around these forums for a couple of months, since Infinity came to my area, not sure whether to change over or not. I was forced into a decision when informed that my ISP was closing down (UKOnline), and I could move to Sky with 6 month free broadband. As I detest the whole Sky/Rupert Murdock organisation ........ here I finally am, on Infinity
Sorry, strayed a bit from the topic there. During this 'hovering' period, I swear that I've seen a post stating that 15 Mbit figure, but I cannot remember where it is, so cannot confirm or quote it.
Perhaps, based on the Speedtester results output, which states :-
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 12000-38717 Kbps
That it maybe the sync speed rather than the throughput. Either way, they are BOTH low, if true .....
Cheers
Edit: @Monkey - I would regard sync speed as the speed negotiated between your router/modem and your ISP, and the throughput the actual speed OBTAINED when transferring files, taking into account the overheads of the protocols/methods used (losses)
Throughput always being less than the sync speed
When i was on ADSL2+ I would knock off around 15% for losses (overheads). So if I synced up at 12 MBits, I would expect to a get throughput of around 10.25 Mbits'ish, and this usually was the case. 12Mbits - 15% (1.8 MBits) = 10.2 Mbits. This 15% figure may not be relevant to Infinity, I would hope it would be less, but don't know.

  • New Infinity User - Reduced speeds

    Dear all,
As a fellow BT Infinity user, I thought I will share my experience with you.
I got my BT Infinity option-2 (unlimited) installed on 27/09/2011 with a white box modem and Home Hub-3.  The BT Engineer said that I should get approx. 33.9mbs downstream and 8.6mbs upstream (as stated on my BT order) and would take up to 10days to achieve this speeds.
When we did a speed test using a wired connection on http://speedtester.bt.com the reading was approx 15mbs downstream and 7mbs upstream. When I queried the less than half downstream reading, once again the BT Engineer said it would take up to 10days to get the required speeds. Then we did a couple more tests and the line speed was ranging between approx. 11 – 19mbs downstream and 5-7mbs upstream.
I then called the BT broadband support and updated them with the speed issues and once again I was told to wait until 10days and I’ll get the speeds specified on the BT order confirmation. So I waited for 10 days….
Now 10 days have passed and nothing has changed. I have already done several speed tests (wired connection) and logged my results with BT. Called BT support and they say to wait for another 10days and the speeds will increase.??
My speeds are still raging between approx. 11-19mbs downstream /  6-7mbs upstream.
I have read some forum suggestions to contact the mods. Is this (contact form) the right form to fill in and send to the mods ?
    With kind regards,

Yes that's the correct form, include a link to this thread. A Mod will respond in a couple of days.

  • New infinity connecton speed

After many years of strugglng with adsl our village has just had FTTC enabled. I am sure that there are no cross talk issues just yet and am wondering if my servcie is acceptable as it is nowhere near what I was expecting or told it may be when ordering.
The HH5, (not engineer fitted but plugged into master socket with flter) has been stable snce it was connected, and syncs just over 20/4 Mb/s
Could someone please look at the figures pasted below, partcularly the noise and attenuation.
Also the data sent/received seem much higher than I would have expected.
I am curious to find out why even the slowest quoted impacted speed is still half as much again as I am actually getting?

  • New motion user here, questions

    Hello all,
I am new to apple motion 2 and new to video and motion graphics as a whole. I just brought home a new dual core 2 ghz G5 and a 23 inch apple display about a month ago. I currently work doing still graphics, mostly layout and some illustration - working in photoshop, illustrator and indesign primarily. I also do a bit of audio work as a hobby using ableton live.
I have always had an interest in video and animation, but have never gotten into it for some reason. When choosing this machine I had considered the dual 2.5 but decided on the dual 2.0 primarily because "I don't do video, animation, or 3D work".
So, what does my wife buy me for Christmas? A digital video camera! I am not sure if I will pursue video and motion graphics on a professional level, but what I really want to do is artistic experimentation - video art if you will, combining my own video clips, graphics, sound effects, music, creativity and vision into motion monsters.
So, after talking with a few people I ordered motion 2 today and should have it by the end of the week. I do not even have the software yet and I am completely overwhelmed by the creative possibilities - and I am not even sure what they are yet! I am very excited to get into this.
One thing I am wondering about; as I stated above, when I chose my computer one of the reasons I chose the dual 2 ghz was specifically because I do not do this type of work. So now, of-course, I am worried that my machine is not going to be quite up to the task. I see that people are running motion on their powerbooks so I imagine I will be fine, but I suppose I am looking for some re-assurance to help quell my obsessive mind.
    My stats are as follows:
    Dual Core 2 GHZ G5
    2.5 gigs DDR SDRAM
    160 GB Hard-drive
NVIDIA GeForce 6600LE 128 mb VRAM
    23 Inch Apple HD Display
Is my system going to be up to task? I am already thinking that I am going to need to upgrade my video card and probably buy another hard-drive. Not now, but sometime later in the year. Also, more ram is always good.
Can I expect to run into any limitations out of the box, and in my early stages of learning?
Again, I am sure I will figure this out on my own when my copy of motion arrives later this week but any advice about what I should expect would be great.
Also, any learning resources I should know of that are not immediately obvious on this forum? Suggested reading, books, online, etc. Tutorial dvd's are great for me. I purchased the 1st quicktime tutorial, "getting started in motion" from rippletraining.com and was utterly blown away by that simple lesson. Also, any online resources of work people have done using motion, especially video/audio integration. Bear in mind that although I do design and layout, and audio work I have exactly zero experience in motion graphics and video.
I'm really excited about the possibilities! So yes, if anyone could address my concerns regarding my system, and point me in the right direction for resources to get started I would greatly appreciate it.
Best regards, and thanks in advance -

Hi Graham, and thanks so much for your response.
Like I said before I am really in the dark when it comes to video and motion graphics so I bought motion on someones recomendation without knowing exactly what it is. Silly maybe? But I have a feeling I am going to be happy as I do not want to limit myself strictly to video alone.
I was a little worried that I had made the wrong choice, as I started to realize that motion is geared towards the creation of motion graphics, but regardless I think I will enjoy learning it and finding a way to integrate it into my vision (whatever that may be).
As far as a basic video editor goes, I will look at finalcut express but probably will need a couple of months before I can justify another purchase to the boss (my wife :-P ). In the mean time will iMovie suffice in your opinion for very basic editing and building? Does iMovie play well, or at all, with motion in your opinion?
I imagine I will be able to edit clips to a desired length and output them to motion then dump them back into iMovie if I'd like. I suppose I will find out.
Sheesh, so many questions! Anyway, I planned on getting final cut and after effects at some point down the road and am still excited about diving into motion.
Again, thanks for your response and once I am up and running I will be sure to post my work.

People say its suposed to be around 6db so why is my speed so low?
It used to be 77mb last week. Does the speed reduce by how many customers are on the cabinet? We just got the FTTC installed so lots of people are buying it just now.

If you use this checker it will tell what cabinet you are on and what services it can receive. post back here editing out your phone number

  • New Mac user. Question about restoring Lion

I've had my Macbook Air for a few months now (just after the last refresh) and I love it, but I was just curious about something.. I recently had to format my PC laptop and afterwords realized some of the stock programs such as my DVD burning software etc were gone. I swore I had a disc that had all that stuff on there, but I was wrong.
My question is, my Macbook Air came with iMovie & the iLife applications and I really don't wanna lose that stuff if I ever need to restore my Macbook for whatever reason. I know I can do backups, but with Mountain Lion coming out I might wanna do a clean install of it. I guess since this is my first time ever dealing with this I was curious if I would lose that stuff or how it all works since I wasn't given a restore disc or whatever. I know I can just redownload purchased applications from the AppStore, but I never purchased iMovie, Photobooth, iPhoto etc and I really REALLY don't wanna have to buy them just because I restored. So yea...how does it all work? Thanks

The smartest thing you should do is backup your system on a regular basis. If you do this when you do a clean install  you will have all your apps, data files, settings etc. I would recommend creating a clone of your system at least weekly (I do mine nightly) using SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner . Also Apple covers the subject of recovery in a couple of advice letters Lion Recovery Disk Assistant & Lion Recovery, OS X Lion: About . Look these over for additional information.

  • May be slightly simple question from a new Mac user: Why can't I quit safari? I cannot quit it from top menu bar neither to do it from dock? All other apps are working normally.

Or you can actived the right button on your magic mouse and click on they icon in the dock. then you select "stop" and it's out of your dock.

  • New Mac user-External Hard Drive question...

Just purchased my 1st Mac/the new Mac mini. Arrived today & am very impressed.
Set-up, right out of the box, was incredibly SIMPLE and I cant believe what a little dynamo this thing is! I've thought about 'switching' to a Mac from PC for quite a while, but was always a little nervous, so I've patiently watched & waited from the sidelines- until now - and it was well worth the wait.
My 'question' is, can anyone recommend a good external hard drive I can use interchangeably between my PC & my new Mini? Still using the PC until I get completely acclimated with Mac platform/etc - I'd like something with at least
    1TB storage. Thanks!

Time Machine requires an external hard drive
You can back up by other means to CDs or DVDs
If you are a .MAC customer you get a decent backup program that backs up to your iDisk and/or to CD-DVD
You would NOT want to back up to your internal drive since that would accomplish nothing - a dead or messed up HD is no good for either the beginning part of the other part where the backup is

On your iPad - go to Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Load Remote Images>On. Try that first.
You can also try a reset. Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Quit the mail and all other apps. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

  • New Mac User - probably a simple question.

I am a new mac user. I bought two macs to basically ichat my new daughter with her grandparents. This is the setup
    1. Macbook 2.0 / 2 gig ram with built in isight. Ethernet DSL connection 6 mps down/768 up.
    2. Mac Mini G4 / 1 gig ram with external isight. Ethernet DSL connections 2 mps down/384k up.
The quality just is very poor on the mac mini side. They can barely make out my daughter. The quality is acceptable on the macbook side. I have read the forum and tried the things I could understand. Under the connection doctor, the macbook side is getting 30fps and the mini is getting only 15fps.
Besides upgrading the mini to a intel based higher processor, is there anything we can do to get better video quality?
I tried this new software SIGHTSPEED and the video quality is amazing on both ends.

    Hi Amit,
The quicktime setting should not be on Automatic or the very top setting of Intranet/LAN as they both have problems with iChat.
Your download speed means you should use the 1.5meg/T1/Intranet/Lan setting.
Don't forget the restart of iChat if you have to change the setting.
If his download is 1.5 meg to 3 meg (half yours) he should also use the 1.5meg/T1 setting.
Is there any chance he is doing a download at the same time or other internet use ?
Are there other computers at his end that are on line ?
There is a vauge chance that the modem at one end can not handle the current speeds you are supposed to get from the ISP. However this is likely to show up in Speed tests when it is a lot lower than what you (both) are paying for.
Test site http://www.bplspeedtest.com/broadband-speed-test.php use the button with the red and green arrows.

Yes 10.8.2 is the latest version of Mountain Lion. 10.7 was Lion and 10.6 was Snow Leopard.
