New install of Tiger LONG time to boot

I just can’t believe it! I am in the same boat!!! What’s this all about??????
I received my Tiger late yesterday and I installed it last night and got the gray screen with the Apple logo upon re-start. I left the computer running, turned off the monitor and just went to bed. When I got up this morning I turned on the monitor and things were running OK - or so it appeared. I ran software update and had to restart the computer. Hung up again with the gray screen again. I forced the computer to reboot to the install CD and performed disk repair (all OK) and repaired permissions and attempted a reboot. You got it, back to the gray screen with Apple logo. Now I am upset. Went to breakfast with friends and upon my return the computer was running correctly. I was gone for 3 hrs so do not know how long it took to completely boot into Tiger. What the heck is going on here?? At this point it was obvious there is a problem so came here to see if I can learn anything.
Note:
. I am installing Tiger on my G4 (DA 466) desktop.
. 800+ memory installed.
. Already performed disk repair and repair permissions from install CD.
. Current status:
. G4 is booted into Tiger.
Any ideas????
Thanks/
Charlie

This is normal behavior. The first restart after a major update to the OS (even the ones available in software update), often cause the startup component database (I can't recall the official name of it right now) to be invalidated, and needs to be rebuilt. On older machines, this can take quite some time (my 500 MHz iBook has taken upwards of 10 minutes to re-build the database).
Subsequent restarts which aren't cause by an OS update will be much faster.

  • Computer still taking a long time to boot

I have a late 2013 21.5” iMac (Model: ME087LL/A) with a 1TB hard drive (5400 rpm).  I just switch from Windows to Mac, so I tried to keep everything as simple as possible on the transfer of files.  I had only added Kaspersky Antivirus and Western Digital Tools.
Boot times and operation seemed normal so I transferred my music, pictures, and some files.  My computer started running slow with just one user and started taking a long time to boot.  I found that since I added about 24,000 pictures to iPhoto, the Mac was trying to send all these pictures to iCloud in the background.  I stopped using iCloud for iPhoto and that seemed to speed up the normal operation once the computer is booted.
The computer still seemed to take a very long time to boot.  It would now take 3 minutes to get from turning it on to being able to use Safari.  I uninstalled Kaspersky Antivirus and Western Digital Tools using each company’s uninstallers so I know they are completely off the computer.
Any ideas on how to get back to the fast boot time?  I am only using about 150 GBs of the 1 T drive so I don’t think that is causing the issue.  What should I expect for a boot time on a brand new Late 2013 iMac?  Or should I try to re-install Maverick and try to get a fresh start?
Any advice would be appreciated so I don’t feel like I made the wrong choice going to Mac.  I'm kicking myself because the computer was so fast when I just got it.

Seventy one thanks for trying to help me out.  I really appreciate it.  Log is below.  You are absolutely right. Kaspersky and WD look like they still have something (as well as google??).  Is there anything else that stands out?  How would I go about getting rid of them?  Re-Install?  Clean Re-Install?

  • New LUN Takes A long Time To Format and Errors Out

    Good afternoon,<o:p></o:p>
I have a Hyper-V Cluster composed of 4 nodes and these nodes are able to access multiple CSVs (14 in total). I recently requested a new LUN (LUN 15)to be provisioned
to my Hyper-V cluster in the size of 500GB. Here is my problem:<o:p></o:p>
    1. Formatting of a 500GB LUN (with quick format selected) should not take more than a few seconds. Instead, the quick format takes about 2hrs if not longer. I have actually
seen it go for half the day.<o:p></o:p>
    2. Once the formatting has completed (no errors), taking the formatted LUN offline freezes the Computer Management screen and shows the status (Not Responding). This
will take place for 30 minutes or less and show that the LUN has been taken offline.<o:p></o:p>
    3. In the Failover Cluster Manager, detecting the disks takes about 15 minutes. Once the available LUNs have been detected I can add the 500GB LUN to the Disks screen
    without any problems.<o:p></o:p>
    4. While in the Disks screen, adding the LUN to the Clustered Shared Volumes takes about 5 minutes (too long).<o:p></o:p>
Already seeing that there is a problem, I went ahead and used the Hyper-V Manager to create a 200GB vhd on the new LUN which has been added to the CSV. The bar indicating
the progress of the vhd creation does not display any progress (no green progress bar appears, not even a tiny bit of it) and after 3 hours (more or less) I receive an error, stating that the creation of the vhd failed.
<o:p>NOTE: The vhd shows up in Volume 9 (LUN 15) but I can only bet that it will not work, plus I would not want to work with a vhd file which failed during the
    creation process.</o:p>
<o:p>Long story short, I repeated the above steps to see if that was a temporary problem, but it is not. The same problem occurs no matter which Hyper-V cluster
node the operations are performed on. I would like to add, that I tested the creation of a vhd on an already configured LUN and the creation was completed successfully, and within a n expected time frame.</o:p>
NOTE: When LUN 15 errors out, it's status shows "Failed" in the Failover Cluster Manager. This in turn, causes the re-scanning of available disks to take forever (in Computer Management) and it keeps searching. Pretty
much, the fail of one LUN affects the entire functionality of the entire Hyper-V Cluster.
Errors Listed In Event Details For LUN 15:
    1. Cluster Shared Volume 'Volume9' ('Cluster Disk 5') is no longer accessible from this cluster node because of error 'ERROR_TIMEOUT(1460)'. Please troubleshoot this node's connectivity to the storage device and
    network connectivity.

    2. Cluster Shared Volume 'Volume9' ('Cluster Disk 5') is no longer available on this node because of 'STATUS_IO_TIMEOUT(c00000b5)'. All I/O will temporarily be queued until a path to the volume is reestablished.
Event ID: 5120; Source: Microsoft-Windows Failover Clustering;Task Category: Cluster Shared Volume
3.Cluster resource 'Cluster Disk 5' of type 'Physical Disk' in clustered role '4530acc9-8552-4696-b6c3-636ff8d58c46' failed.
Based on the failure policies for the resource and role, the cluster service may try to bring the resource online on this node or move the group to another node of the cluster and then restart it.  Check the resource and group state using Failover
Cluster Manager or the Get-ClusterResource Windows PowerShell cmdlet.

    4.
Cluster resource 'Cluster Disk 5' (resource type 'Physical Disk', DLL 'clusres.dll') did not respond to a request in a timely fashion. Cluster health detection will attempt to automatically recover by terminating the Resource Hosting Subsystem (RHS)
process running this resource. This may affect other resources hosted in the same RHS process. The resources will then be restarted.
The suspect resource 'Cluster Disk 5' will be marked to run in an isolated RHS process to avoid impacting multiple resources in the event that this resource failure occurs again. Please ensure services, applications, or underlying infrastructure
(such as storage or networking) associated with the suspect resource is functioning properly.

Any and all help will be appreciated!

    Hi AquilaXXIII,
What server edition you are using? If you are using 2012r2 as cluster node, please install Recommended hotfixes and updates for Windows Server 2012 R2-based failover clusters

  • MBP Taking a long time to boot up

Recently, My MBP started taking a long time to boot up starting at the Mac OS X boot screen and since it is set on auto login through the whole longin process(briging up the dock and finder windows) i've tried safe booting but it didnt make much of a difference what should I do?

  • MacBook Air 13" is taking a very long time to boot up

My daughter purchased a MacBook Air 13" last 1.7 GH Intel Core i5, 4GB Memory. A couple of weeks ago, my daughter noticed that her computer was taking a long time to boot up. Apparently the bootup time has progressively lengthened to 3 - 5 minutes to get to her desktop. What happens is the boot-up process seems to stall on a grey screen and beach-balls until the desktop eventually appears. Does anyone have any idea of what could be causing this issue? Any tips, tricks, suggestion would be helpful.
    Thanks!!

I would consider doing the following:
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • Why outlook2011 mac version* takes long time to boot with OSX

why outlook2011 mac version* takes long time to boot with OSX

Okay, so after doing all of the above, the computer still takes between 40 seconds and 1 minute or so to boot up, and the VersionCue messages still appear. However I discovered that the "kdcmond cannot retrieve..." messages disappeared after I disabled my ethernet connections. So at least I know that that had nothing to do with the extended boot-up time.
I have heard that the more RAM you have, the longer it takes to boot due to the RAM count. Since I have 10 GB, maybe this is why?
I've included the most recent Console messages below:

  • Mid-2010 MacBook Pro taking a long time to boot up with Yosemite (Etrecheck results)

I'd be so grateful if anyone can help me get to the bottom of this. The MacBook's otherwise working just fine just takes quite a lot longer (2-3 mins) to boot up since installing Yosemite. Just tried upgrading the memory which has made the system run faster but doesn't seem to have remedied the boot up problem.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Applying Software Installation Policy Is Taking Long Time During Boot Process

1 of my servers is having slow boot up issue. I have enabled user environment debugging and the gpsvc.log file has been generated. I have also used the Windows Performance Analyzer to capture logs and results came back that the GP Client is taking a long
time in the boot process. So, I reckoned the slow boot is due to GPO but I am not sure where to look from this log file.
I have only paste part of the gpsvc.log file here due to limitation in the number of characters allowed to be posted. Would appreciate some good advise on this issue that I am facing.

  • IMac taking long time to boot after new hard drive installed. Help?

I recently had a new hard drive installed on my iMac (running Snow Leopard). After the intall all was well, but I couldn't get my screensaver to work. Erroneously thinking it was missing, I reinstalled it and ended up with two screen saver folders in the system files. Now when I turn on the Mac, I get a white screen for several seconds (close to a minute) before the system shows me the Apple logo and then boots. I'm concerned about this. Did my copying the screen saver cause the problem? Should I reinstall my system software?  I was planning to upgrade to Mountain Lion anyway. Will that fix the problem? Any suggestions appreciated.

Restart in Safe Boot Mode (hold the left Shift key as soon as you restart your computer and hold it until the Apple logo appears). Once it gets to the desktop you can restart normally. Safe Mode  serves a number of purposes and one of them is to delete/trim temporary files that might be causing boot problems. There's no guarantee this will improve your startup time but it will do no harm and I have seen computers restart more quickly after a Safe Boot.

  • Tiger refuses to install after a long time...

I need to install Tiger in a new second hard disk. I have a main disk (that was mounted some years ago with this same Tiger disk and version, 10.4) and later use the new disk as the main one
But disk instalation ask me to restart and this is repeated all the time. I disconnected the old hard disk but G5 just shows in the screen an alternating view of a question mark and a picture of something like a little head folder.
I am trying to absolve the disk install of this problem and think that some firware or related thing is the culprit.
    Thank you.
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   Enough memory

I had the same problem. Slept fine with 10.3.9 and somewhere along the Tiger chain of updates it refused to sleep or would wake from sleep almost immediately.
After a ton of research and trying different things, here's what I've found. I should mention the Quicksilver has a dual processor upgrade, a usb 2 card, an M-Audio sound card (junk) and a fw 800 card. So, there's lot's to go wrong.
Apple's sleep is a mild sleep. To get it to sleep you have to execute a command to have it "safe sleep". Your G4 will likely need to be configured to "safe sleep". Go here http://www.jackoverfull.altervista.org/applicazioni/suspendnow/index-en.html All the scripts are there to configure and a script to run. Read the instructions in the read-me file. They are well written, succinct and simple. I keep a shortcut to SuspendNow! on the task bar. When I leave the computer I double click it, press enter and voila, sleep.
Don't be tempted to place the app in Utilities, it needs to be in Applications.
Another approach is NMS Sleep Assist. http://slicedapple.ath.cx/nmsutility.html The instructions are poor. I tried to get this to work under the many approachs available in the program and finally ended up using "Dependent Mode" (not ESI), setting up appropriate sleep holds and setting Apple's sleep to "never". Dependent mode replaces Apple's sleep and it works for me.
I run both SuspendNow! and NMS. I need NMS if I'm downloading and want to walk away. After the download's complete, plus my 5 minute time setting, the G4 sleeps.
There's a ton of sleep apps and widgets out there. I can honestly say I tried them all and these are the only two that worked for me. Chasing hardware issues is a waste of time.

  • Z30 New Handset is taking long time for first boot

hold power button down for 30 seconds to reboot it

Hi, I purchased Z30 handset yesterday and tried switching it ON. It has taken 15hrs for booting and still showing 99%.Is this issue related to my handset particularly or BB10 related?

  • How long is an 'abnormally long' time to boot after 10.4.8 update?

How long is too long to wait for my macBook Pro to take to boot up after installing the latest update?
    An hour?
    2 hours?
    A day?
I installed from Automatic Updates and shutdown rather than restart. Came abck hours later turned on powerer and waited and waited. After about an hour I tunred it off booted from the install CD, ran the disk utility, fixed a few permission and rebooted...
Should I take it in to the Apple Store tomorrow morning if this continues or reinstall the OS and start over?

    Hello dn:
As an aside, comparing Windows to OS X is like
comparing a plow horse ready for the glue factory to
a thoroughbred race horse. I use both every day and
have for years, so I have vivid daily comparisons.
Now then, as I indicated above, you probably caused
the problem by interrupting the software update
process. At a guess, you have clobbered directories
(you, not Apple). The first step would be to run
repair disk from your software install DVD (boot it,
holding down the "C" key). Repair disk is found in
the disk utility. If that works, you should be back
to the point where you can reinstall the combo
updater. There is also an excellent third party
program (mentioned above) called DiskWarrior (pricey
at about $90, but worth it if it saves the day).
If none of that works, you probably should do an
    archive and install:

A good back up/retreat strategy is just good
computing practice whether or not you are a computing
professional. There are several approaches. I make
bootable clones of all my iMacs on an external
firewire drive using a little program called
    SuperDuper (&28 at www.shirt-pocket.com). The
bootable clone gives me almost complete protection
    against hardware or software problems.
By the by, these forums are user-to-user. Everyone
is a volunteer - not an Apple employee. Apple
monitors/moderates the forums and provides an
excellent resource. If you are new to Macs (as your
post seems to indicate), you should spend some time
browsing the forums and using the tools available -
including the excellent library of knowledge base
    articles.

OK, So I'm a cry baby.
But I do not buy your argument that it was all my fault. After I inrterupted the hour ling gray screen and ran and fixed a few previlige problems and tried again over 2 hour went by with nothing but the gray screen.
Archive and intall did get me back and running, but by now 4 -5 hours of my life are gone that I want back!
And the tone on this whole board seems to be we MacBook owners, who unsupectingly trusted Apple and let the Automaitic Software Update have its way with a computer that was functioning just fine, the result of which is a computer that needs to have the OS reinstalled, are at fault for having poor prior knowledge?
I bring up Microsoft because they are BAD. They have an OS that allows 3rd parties to install code to render your computer useless at best, a robot of evil at worst.
Yet here we have the Apple, a trusted known entity and the manufacture of not only the hardware but the OS handing us an install that should have just WORKED.
So al I can think is the Delta install is the culprit, since I had previously been on 10.4.7 and the Archive & Install put in 10.4.6. The Combined installer is ok.
Again MacBook owners are victimized for keeping current?
Some one at Apple deserves a dummy slap at least.
MacBook owners represent the "Switchers". They bought on style and a promis of stability and reliability. Not the allure of becoming UNIX Geeks or even Uber User or browsers of forums. They came from that dull gray world out there where viruse roam but if you let automatic updates run and loaded up with antiv virus and spyware scanners, things pretty much worked.
I'm not new to mac as I have been usinge them since I shelled out $3,500 for a Mac SE. (Don't laugh). I gave up however being a Uber User and I at least am tenaciouse enought to find this discussion board. I suspect there are going to be a lot of busy Mac "Geniouses" for the next few days as ordinary computer users stream in with MacBooks with gray screens.
You know Sony support totally *****, but they are rated the best on the PC side for customer satisfaction. Why? You almost never have to seek support from Sony.
Again I'm just ******** 'casue it happend to me on a new laptop that was bone stock. Its working now so problem solved.

  • Sysprep Image takes a long time to boot

I am using POSReady 7 and using sysprep, now everything works fine as it should but takes over an hour from powerup till it boots into Windows for the first time.  Now I know in my unattend.xml I am using the reinstall all devices option but Windows
is running its setup and I can see that working but once it is done and reboots, it comes up to a black screen with the mouse in the corner and sits at the screen for 30 min. Then it boots into Windows and all is well.  My xml has little config in it
why does it sit at this screen for so long?

    Intel Celeron G540 2.5Ghz
    4Gb
I typically install it via USB using Imagex through Winpe to the Drive which takes roughly 15min
But the Initial Windows boot takes over an hour
The 2 model Registers im using are NCR 80 and 82 xrt
