New install of Windows - Don't want to lose everything on my phone like las

Hi,
I have to reinstall Windows on a regular basis. Last time I did it I synced my iPhone and all of my apps, contacts, music, photos and everything was erased. I really really dont want that to happen again.
Is there any way for me to sync my iPhone with my computer and still have all of the data from the phone transferred over to iTunes as a backup for the phone without syncing it first and losing everything I have added to it over the last 6 months?

You can transfer iTunes purchases on your phone to the iTunes library before syncing:
1. Disable automatic syncing on connection (iTunes Pref. > Device > Disable....)
2. Start iTunes and connect phone.
3. Right-click device tab and select "Transfer Purchases" - this will transfer all iTunes purchased media and apps to your iTunes library so that when you sync you don't lose everything on your phone.
To Sync photos, connect phone with iTunes off and transfer photos to your photo app.
If you have to reinstall you OS "on a regular basis", you should be backing up your hard disk frequently so that you can restore your iTunes library, photos and iPhone backup. Also consider changing your computer to a Mac OS - you both won't HAVE to reinstall at all and have a built in automatic HD backup system (Time Machine).

My Computer crashed and I lost everything on it. Just got a new computer and when I plug my iphone into it to sync it says Ii can't because its already synced with another itunes I've logged into my itunes acc.) It says I must earse and replace with new itunes I don't want to lose everything on my phone by doing this is there anything else i ca do

That's what backups are for. Use Time Machine. It's free and external drives are cheap. To recover your iPhone's content requires the use of third party utilities. Success is not guaranteed. Read:

I was trying to sync my iPhone 3GS and it is now stuck, saying I'm in recovery mode.  I am thoroughly confused now after researching online.  I'm scared to restore to original settings as I don't want to lose everything, apps, contacts, etc. Help!  Is there a way to get it all back if I do restore?? Can I my stuff back through iCloud??

Bad news first and we hope for good news as well
The device is in Recovery Mode and the data has already been deleted, you need to restore the device with iTunes in order to get the iPhone back into a working state
When the iPhone is restored you can then restore it from your latest backup using iTunes or iCloud and regain some, if not all, of your data.
The good news part only happens if you had a backup.

i tunes will not update it says before i open itunes it wasent installed correctly but i dont want to lose everything i have how do i fix this?

It looks like you may have to reinstall itunes.
There are multiple things you should uninstall (and in a certain order) according to apple.
Also, even thought your music and itunes library information should not be affected in the uninstall, I would strongly recomend backing it up. Go to where you keep your music files and make sure you back up everything in the folders "itunes" and "itunes music".
The directions for the reinstall are here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925 They include what to uninstall and in what order. This is for itunes 9 and earlier, but I think it is the same for itunes 10.

If this program will not get the iPod out of recovery mode then you will have to restore and thus erase the iPod.

  • Don't know passcode to iPod but don't want to lose everything!?

I just found my iPod and I cannot remember the passcode for the life of me. I tried twice & the second time it disabled for a minute, then a minute later after just one try it disabled for 5 minutes. I was just going to back it up & then restore it like last time this happened but this time it says that I need to unlock the iPod first. Unfortunately that's why I was trying to do that :-) I really really don't want to lose everything but don't know what to do. I just spent the past hour trying to figure it out, but no luck. Please please please help! Thank you so much!!

You don't have that choice, I'm afraid.

  • My cousin wants to open her iPhone 5 but she can't remember her password and she didn't sync it to a computer or have an icloud account, what do i do? she doesn't want to lose everything in her phone

My cousin wants to open her phone 5s but she cannot remember her password and she doesn't want to lose everything on it. She didn't sync it to any computers or have an icloud account. What should I do?

If she cannot remember the passcode, then she has to restore the device. If she did not backup the phone before this, she will lose all of her content. The only chance would have been if she had synced to a computer, but you say she did not.

  • Although I am logged in as an admin, I can't check for updates or update Firefox. I'm on a Mac and would rather not delete this version and just reinstall the new version bc I don't want to lose my bookmarks. Please help - thanks.

I need to update Firefox to the latest version, but check for updates is grayed out. I am already logged in as an admin for my computer (it's a Mac), but my computer is telling me that I don't have permission to update Firefox. How can I update Firefox? I don't want to delete and reinstall because then I will lose my bookmarks.
    Thanks!

    June 2011:
iWeb publishing, MobileMe Gallery, and iDisk will all disappear as the company sunsets its current online service in favor of iCloud.
Other MobileMe services—including syncing of Mac Dashboard widgets, keychains, Dock items, and System Preferences—will not be part of iCloud, Apple says. Those syncing services will stop working as soon you migrate from MobileMe to iCloud. In addition, Apple says that while MobileMe members can no longer upgrade to a Family Pack or buy additional MobileMe storage, Family Pack members will be able to transition their accounts to iCloud individually, as long as it’s done before June 30, 2012.

As of today, visitors to MobileMe.com are no longer given the option to convert their accounts to iCloud or to retrieve old photos and files, with Apple now simply pointing users to iCloud.

  • HT4061 I am on my computer at the Itune Store and there was an offer to update my Iphone 4. I started the update and it was preparing to update but then an error should up and now my phone in recovery mode. I don't want to loose everything off my phone. H

I am on my computer at the IStore and there was an offer to update my Iphone and I selected the download. The update was downloading and then there was an error message and now my Iphone 4 is recovery mode. I don't want to loose all my existing stuff on my phone. What shall I do?

You should never update without making sure that everything is on your computer.
If your iphone is recovery mode, then everything on it is already lost.
If you are using your iphone as designed, then everything is on your computer, just sync it back.

  • Really need help - Lost All iTunes Files!  I don't want to lose everything!

I moved recently and when I replugged my computer, all my iTunes songs were lost. I still have the songs on my ipod mini and I'm not daring to plug it in. I really want to restore my files.
I figure that I need to do this as if I got a new computer and re-install it. However, I am told that ipods are a one way stream from computer to ipod only and not vice versa. I'm hoping someone can help me because I have bought songs that will be lost too. If I didn't have the purchased songs, I wouldn't mind re-importing all 86 CDs of mine (although it would be a pain).
Please help me ASAP. My CD collection is growing fast and I have a very long bus ride.
    Thanks.

Perhaps you may still have the music files on your PC -- but not seen in iTunes or the PC.
Do a thorough search of your PC using the tips below:
First - Make sure that you enable your Windows Explorer to view 'Hidden' files:
    - Open Windows Explorer
    - Select 'My Computer'
    - On the main Windows Explorer menu: Tools=>Folder Options=>'View' tab
    - In 'Advanced Setting' --> Files and Folders --> Hidden files and folders:
-- Select 'Show hidden files and folders’
    - Click 'Apply to All Folders'
    - Click 'OK'
Then check using Windows Explorer in 'My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\...' for folders containing your music (or wherever you keep your music folders).
Also check in your Recycle Bin to see if you accidentally deleted it. If so, ‘Restore’ it back to it’s original spot.
Then try running a search using Windows Explorer (or similar) for files with the extensions of: m4a, m4p, MP3, OR with the partial names of the songs you are missing.
Do all the above before you decide that your music files have been completely erased from your hard drive.
If you can locate the music files/folders, we can get iTunes to recognize it. Try one of these:
If you have a backup iTunes database file available....
    1. --- Close iTunes. If you have a backup (or previous version) of the ‘iTunes Library’itl’ database file, then place a copy of that file in the ‘...\My Music\iTunes’ folder (or wherever the current, incomplete file resides).
If no backup ITL file exists….
2a. --- In iTunes choose: Edit==>Preferences==>Advanced tab. Select 'Change' and browse to the music folder in your PC drive (if it isn’t already). Click OK to save that setting.
    Then....
2b. --- In iTunes choose: File==>’Add Folder to Library’ & browse to the music folder in your PC drive. Click OK.
Without the ITL file, re-‘Adding’ the music files to the Library will lose you the Ratings, Play Counts, Date Added and Last Played attributes, as well as your Playlists. No real way to recover them if you haven’t made prior backups. Something to consider for the future....
If your music files are truly gone, and you have some or all of your music files on your iPod, these links will give you several methods of recovering whatever songs remain on your iPod; some free, some third-party software, some more comprehensive for restoring playlists, ratings, playcounts, etc. Read them and their associated links before deciding on a strategy that works for you. There are many various third-party software programs that will offer a more robust process, or an easier GUI. Do a Google search for them if the links below leave you wanting…
Don King Resurrected: Deleted files from hard drive (free user steps – music recovery only)
MacMuse: Computer Crashed (free user steps – music recovery only)

    iPodRip Software
    PodUtil Software
XPlay (Software For Cross-Platform Functionality & Music Recovery)
XPlay Photo Browser (For recovering Photos)
After recovering your song files, strongly consider developing a thorough backup strategy for just this type of situation.
You need at least three sets of your music:
-- One full set on the PC within iTunes (on internal HD or ExHD)
-- One full set on an separate external backup medium (CD/DVD/ExHD/other)
-- One (full or partial) set on the iPod
Music files on just the iPod and the computer is not considered having any backup. If you cannot store your complete music files on the computer, then create and maintain two external sets.
Backup both the music files and the Library database file (iTunes Library.itl). What are the iTunes Library files?
Here is a post on developing a backup strategy: http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=394618&messageID=1263275

  • Hard drive not recognised. Haven't backed up my work recently. Don't want to lose everything

I'm having a bit of disaster. I finished university for the term today, and typically my laptop decided immediately after my last class to die.
When I turn it on I get a picture of a flashing folder with a question mark.
I put it into recovery mode, intending to try and repair the disk. But it says the only disk in Disk Utilities is the Mac OS X base disk, or something like that. I DO have a time machine backup that I'm pretty sure I ran since installing Mountain Lion. Unfortunately I don't think I've backed up using Time Machine in the last 8 weeks, so it won't have any of my work from this term of university. Obviously losing this work would be a bit disastrous for my life and sanity.
Does anyone have any advice as to what to do? I have a genius bar appointment booked bu not until Thursday and if it's something I could fix myself I'd be keen to do that (although obviously I'm not keen for taking apart my laptop for fear of destroying it even further, and also because I think my laptop is still under warranty. I bought it 13 months ago in the education store, and I thought I read somewhere that it came with a 3 year hardware warranty - can anyone confirm this?)
Any advice would be most gratefully received!

    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.
