New Installation - How to Backup Programs??

Hi,
I have a MBPro purchased Jan. 07 with Tiger 10.4. I'm upgrading to Snow Leopard and I know I need to back up everything.
Most of my 3rd Party Applications I purchased on hard copy, so I still have install disks available. However, what do I do with programs I downloaded from the internet, such as iPhoto 08 and iWork 06? How do I reinstall those? Is there a way to re-download them from Apple? I don't have any receipts from those, they were purchased years ago obviously.
Also, (and maybe I need to post this in a new thread) is there anyway to add more hard disk space to a MBPro? The Apple store suggested I just buy a new laptop to solve my space problem, but as that is not an option for me, I need more disk space and was wondering if a new hard drive can be purchased and successfully installed???
Thanks in advance!!!

No, you will need to replace your external HD. They are inexpensive, for less than $100 you can get a USB drive that will take care of creating your clone. Then your upgrade to SL will go much smoother.
Once you have installed and recovered you can continue to use the drive as a backup drive using cloning software or you can also use it for Time Machine backups.

  • How to backup programs - Time Machine?

I would like to back up my programs such that if my hard drive crashes, I don't have to reinstall them.
I've got Time Machine running & have made disk images through Disk Utility.
Will either of these allow me to restore programs without having to get the install disks & serial #s again?  Or any other method?
    Thx -

OK - will check them out as well.  As long as Time Machine & Disk Image work, I think I'm good for now.
TimeMachine drive is not "hold the option key bootable" so if your hard drive crashes mechanically, your stuck until your internal boot drive is replaced and restored from TimeMachine.
A clone is "hold option key bootable" and lets you get right back to using the machine or recovering essential files off a problemlatic drive. You can even reverse clone back and replace a hosed OS X.
Carbon Copy Cloner and Superduper are free to use cloning tools for drive to drive cloning, but Superduper charges for more features like auto-scheduling etc. which CCC doesn't.
Some folks recommend having both a TimeMachine drive AND a clone or two for the best of both sorts of protection.
See Pondini's excellent balanced "pro/con's" of both solutions here
    http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Clones.html
Perhaps one day TimeMachine will be bootable from the computer that made the TimeMachine drive and solve everyone's problem, but until then one needs both solutions as hard drives fail just as often as the software fails.
Also in this list is a free TimeMachine Editor so you can control when TM makes it's backups and other really cool freeware that nearly most all Mac users will have a need for someday.

  • Satellite L650 (PSK1EA) New installation - how to?

    Hi,
my hard drive in the L650 (PSK1EA) recently broke.
I intend to purchase a new one and replace it only problem is that i never backed up my old one.
i know i'm going to have to buy windows again but what other stuff do i need,
where can i get it and when do i install it (before or after windows)?
    thanks in advance

It depends on you what you want to do exactly. You can buy original Toshiba recovery disc (follow the link posted by PauPau) or you can install OS using original Microsoft installation disc.
If you use original recovery disc everything will be installed properly and you must not install anything. Recovery image contains OS and all necessary drivers, tools and utilities. And the most important information for you is that this version must not be activated.
Second option is usage of Microsoft installation disc. After OS installation you must install every driver, tool and utility one by one. All of them can be downloaded from Toshiba download page http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp
Please note: this version must be activated and you must buy licence code.
This second option is more complicated so I strongly recommend you to order original recovery disc. You can use it without limitation and so often you want.

  • After laptop crash and new installation, how can i transfer my ipad content towards itunes ?

    HI,
I had to change my hard disk on my laptop, and then resintall windows from scratch. After reinstalling iTunes, I want to transfer the content of my iPad2, iPhone and 2 iPods on iTunes.
However, when I want to synchronisze, iTunes brings an alert indicating that the content of the deveices will be replaced by the computer library (which of course is empty after the reinstallation).
Any help or advice please ?

Thank you. That would have worked too, but before getting the answer I found another solution: what I finnaly did was use Detunes to copy my books from the iPad. It was quite fast too. Any of those could have worked quite nicely.

  • Poor speed on new installation, how do I get help?...

Posted here a few days ago and also mailed forum moderators asking for comment. No response.
IP Profile on line is 6mb, despite all figures suggesting we should get at least 10mb. Downloads are around 5.5mb.
Have tried all the suggestions from the folks here on the forum, HH plugged direct into microfilter into master / test socket. No other extensions in house.  Really disappointed with the service, would like to know what options I have to get this looked at by competent support, without being expected to pay £90 for an engineer.

when trying to setup itunes on my pc i get the following message: there is a problem with this Windows installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. How could I solve this problem?

    Repair your Apple software update.
Go to START/ALL PROGRAMS/Apple Software Update. If it offers you a newer version of Apple Software Update, do it but Deselect any other software offered at the same time. Once done, try another iTunes install
If you don't find ASU, go to Control Panel:
    START/CONTROL PANEL/Programs n Features/highlight ASU and click REPAIR,

  • I keep getting a message that "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected." when I try to download iTunes 10.5. So I can't update it. How can it be fixed?

When I try to download iTunes 10.5, I keep getting the message "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected." Therefore I can't update my iTunes to the new version. How can I solve this? I don't want to pay for technical support as this seems to be a problem with the iTunes package Apple is providing itself by that message.

    Hello, hartadrian.
I would recommend attempting to repair the Apple Software Update via the steps below.  Once processed attempt to download, update or install iTunes 11.

  • How to backup new learned remote-control data for the IR-remote APP???

    Hello @ all,
does anybody know a way to backup the new learned remote control on XPERIA Z Tablet?
    I found a database under:
    "system/vendor/etc/sony-ir-remote/db"
But after I've saved new learned remote controls the date and the size of these DB's
are the same as before. Therefore the IR-remote control APP dosn't save the new data
    in these files.
Furthermore there isn't a button in the remote-control APP to backup new learned remote controls.
And I can't choose the remote control APP in the backup function APP from the XPERIA Z Tablet
to save the data. Also the backup with the Sony PC Companion Software dosn't save the learned
remote controls. Who develops such a dross mobile software?
Sorry SONY, but you have the most unpalatable support I've lived to see!
The first SONY support center refered me to another support center.
The mobile support center does not answer to my questions per mail.
Then I call the mobile support center. The answers were shallow and standard.
The support engineer want to ask the development and call back.
However, I am still waiting for promised recall.

I am facing the same problem.
I have spend a few days to configure and train my Sony tablet to configure for all my remotes such as aircon and lighting. I did a backup using the Sony companion to my PC. When my tablet was faulty and serviced. But the backup did not recover the IR remote settings and codes which I programmed previously. I also tried your backup restore app but it also does not save the configuration.
It is VERY IMPORTANT for me to backup the settings.
Please provide the folders and path of where the IR REMOTE settings and personal configuration and codes trained were kept so that I could back them up. Are these path protected area that required rooted access?
Hope that Sony could update the app to include backup of new trained codes and settings and in the meantime to provide a procedure of how to backup the setting and trained IR codes with or without rooting the device.

  • How to uninstall Apple Application Support v. 1.2.1 on a PC or force a new installation of QuickTime

After running Apple QuickTime for three or more years on my PC running Windows XP, apparently some part of its code became corrupted.  Trying to install an updated version of QuickTime, all went well until the new installation was not able uninstall the old version of Apple Application Support, v. 1.2.1.
How can I uninstall the old version of Apple Application Support v. 1.2.1, or, how can I force a new installation of QuickTime without first uninstalling Apple Application Support?
    Thanks for your help.
    Jim

Jim, C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple\Installer Cache is where Apple Application Support is located should you want to delete it, the version you mention is old.
You may be able to first force a new update by going to. C:\ Program Files\Apple Software Update and double clicking on SoftwareUpdate exe
If that doesn't work for you than you would have to remove the old QuickTime msi file. Which is a microsoft installer file. Located in C:\WINDOWS\Installer
If you have any difficulty locating and removing the msi file this link to Windows Installer CleanUp Utillty should help. If not post back.

  • New HD for MacBook... How To Backup Data?

I just bought a 160gb Hitachi drive from OWC for my MacBook. Can anyone give me step by step directions on how to backup my current drive and how do I migrate this data on the new HD? I know how to physically install it but I want to make sure I back it up alright. I've heard about using SuperDuper, but what do I do with that program and how do I migrate?
    Thanks
    -B-

No, I don't have 2 gigs of RAM but as soon as I get the money I will upgrade from OWC! I have found that website (http://www.macsales.com) to be very reliable, quick and they have the lowest prices out there for the highest quality of products.
I searched around the internet to find out which was the best HD to get and what speeds, etc, and I found most went with Hitachi's 160G Travelstar drive. I know I read about many people having issues with Western Digital's model (sudden motion sensor, kernel panics, etc) so even though it was cheaper I knew that was the wrong way to go just by reading people's comments online. I suggest everyone else do the same thing. Do your research, both online and off, and find out what most people are having successes with (and asking on this board is what helped me, too!)
Once I get my increased RAM, then we will officially be twins. lol.
    Thanks for your response...
I'm lovin this new drive. I've got my 40 gigs of music on here, my 10,000 photos, all my apps, and I still have like 85 gigs left. Shweet! With the stock 80gb drive, I was already in my teens in HD space!

  • How do I get my files from apple's "Backup" program onto my computer?it

I just upgraded to the new operating system on my Macbook Pro. I had Tiger on it, and things kept getting messed up. The people at the Apple store recommended doing an "erase and install" so that it clears out all of the old program info. Prior to doing this I used Apple's "Backup" program that used to come with .Mac account to backup my information to my external hard drive. Now that I have the new OS installed I want to use the backup that I created right before I erased my hard drive to restore things back to the computer (Iphoto library, Itunes, files, Mail settings, etc.) I went to the backups folder and all I see is a bunch of folders. Isnt there supposed to be some way to put them all in their original locations? I need to get my Mail settings and bookmarks back from my Safari settings. I am really new to all of this, and thought I did things the correct way... but I am getting extremely frustrated since it does not seem to be as "easy" as the employee at the store made it out to be. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, you will need the Backup program along with the backups you created. Time Machine and Backup are not the same.
You can re-download Backup from your iDisk where you got it originally. It isn't available elsewhere.
See Mac OS X 10.5- When to use Time Machine or .Mac Backup to back up data.

Hi there,  i'm new to the iPHONE community and please can someone tell me how to backup my phone to iCLOUD. How do i connect with wi-fi. Must i buy a wi-fi connetion or what.Thank you kind regards

Do you have a wi-fi network in your home ? If you do then you should be able to connect your phone to it via Settings > Wi-Fi on your phone - that should show any networks that are available, and tapping on the network that you want to use (and typing in its password if it's password protected) should connect the phone to it. If you don't have a wi-fi network then yes, you will need wifi router in your home, which is connected to the internet (e.g. via your phone line) to be able to back up your phone to iCloud.

How can I force Time Machine to make a complete backup of my Hard Drive.  I just installed a new external drive for Backup since my previous one failed.  Now when I back up, Time Machine only backs up my data folder and the Users folder.
When I start a backup. Time Machine says "Oldest Backup: None; Latest Backup: None", so it seems like it should do a complete backup, but it only does a partial.

Aside from the size of my backup drive, which I will increase at some point, I'd really like to have time machine backing up all system folders, especially Applications. How to I reset this hidden exclusions?
    Thanks,
