New installation of iTunes on Windows 7 64 bit hangs

I just installed iTunes 9.0.3 (64 bit version) on my Windows 7 (64 bit version as well) PC (Core i7). The installation seemed to work fine.
But from the first start of iTunes, it has very slow response times and I can't do anything like browsing music or synchronizing with my iPhone. If I click on the menu bar, it takes 30 seconds until it pops up. To exit from iTunes, I have to kill it with the task manager.
The installer wants to put iTunes to C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes. I expected - as this is a 64 bit version - C:\Program Files\iTunes being the appropriate location.
Any ideas?

Firewall: none
Not even the built-in Windows Firewall, Tofswi?
Oh yes, you are right. As it silently works in the background (what I like), I completely forgot about this one. It is activated with default settings. I did not touch it since installing of Windows 7.
I took one more try and reinstalled iTunes. And it works - regardless of whether the firewall is activated or not. So where's the problem then: It's my iPhone (3G). When I plug it in, iTunes immediately slows down. Then I remove the iPhone and iTunes comes back to normal operation. In my case, the firewall does not have any influence on that.
As I can see in other threads like http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11204685&#11204685 I'm not alone in this matter.
- I checked the iPhone USB driver: It's up to date and I can access the iPhone by the Windows explorer)
- I tried to give iTunes time "to get accustomed" to the iPhone: Sometimes iTunes crashes completely, sometimes there is an unknown error (different error numbers, e. g. -6999)
- Then I happened to be the lucky user being allowed to click on "synchronize": Unknown error again, but iTunes always seems to proceed a little bit - it's confusing.
- Then a deactivated synchronizing of all (applications, music etc.) but the contacts and clicked on "synchronize" again: It's quite interesting that iTunes complains about not being able to download Wikipanion from the iPhone as I just told iTunes not to synchronize applications...
After all these steps the contacts of iPhone had been transferred to the PC, fine. And I could not start the applications on my iPhone anymore, not very fine. Every application I touched started up and closed again immediately. I remember: Reinstalling all the apps will help, great But wait, as I already know, this is a problem of the DRM. I only had to update one of the installed apps through the app store directly on the iPhone. Then it worked again. Installing a new app should help as well.
I like the easy handling of the iPhone. But iTunes with iPhone on Windows 7 is an impertinence. It's really not the quality I expect from Apple.
b noir, thanks a lot for helping.
I for myself am going to take a cup of tea now. And perhaps I will sink into contemplation about the time I spent in the old days to transfer some addresses from one to another datebook by pencil compared with the time I spend today to debug modern software.

I have itunes directory on an external hard drive and want to direct a new installation of itunes on windows 8 to use it. I tried holding down ctrl and clicking itunes and after many tries got it to work one time. When I went back in later it had reverted back to a blank version of itunes and I cant get ctrl to work again. Any other ideas?

This is sometimes caused by a problem with the iTunesPrefs.xml file, normally found at C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunesPrefs.xml. Try dragging this to the desktop and trying again.
Alternatively the problem may be that you have McAfee AV and it is preventing iTunes from updating the same file and thus causing the problem. See Why does iTunes delete my itunesprefs.xml? for details.

Probably should've searched around a bit more. Just saw a similar forum post to my own in which redownloading and burning solved another user's similar issue. As of now I've redownloaded the 64-bit ISO, burned it, and so far so good (at 72% extracting files). I will repost here if it was a success in hopes that other users with a similar issue find this and benefit from it. Hope I didn't just waste anyone's time with a question that had already been answered (haha)

  • Trouble shooting the installation of itunes on Windows 7 64 bit?

I have found some old discussions, which had solutions to installing itunes on a Windows 7, 64 bit system.  I am getting the following error, and can not get itunes to install:
The Windoes Installer Service could not be accessed.  This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed.  Contact your support personal for assistance.
Windows Installer is working for other programs.  I think it has something to do with permissions or Registry entries, but I have tried every other solution and I still get the same error.  The only solution I have not tried, is reinstalling the Windows installer, because I am able to install other programs, and I do not have a CD, only a recovery partition.
Thank you for any assistance you can offer.

Somehow "Apple Updates" was installed on my computer, and once I uninstalled that program, rebooted my computer, then iTunes installed fine.  So I am all set.  Thank you.

  • Remotely control the ITunes on Windows 7 64 bit PC with the new IPad

With the latest version of ITunes for both Win7 and the new IPad, I'm only able to use the new IPad to remotely control the ITunes on Windows 7 64 bit PC through wired connection  ( ethernet cable ) to the wireless router. As soon as I connect my PC through wireless connection, the new IPad can not find my libraries.
Is this a known issue or am I missing some settings?
    Thanks,

Just downloaded a new version of itunes on windows 7 and is not responding

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • How to install itune under Windows XP 64-bit professional with SP2?

I have iPhone 3GS for over a year and I have set it up at my work computer (Windows XP professional) with latest iTune and it work great. Recently our IT has upgraded our system and all of our new machines has Windows XP 64-bit OS.
I can't figure out how to install iTune under Windows XP 64-bit, to synch with my e-mail, contact and calendars any more?
    Can any one help?

New machines? With XP 64-bit? Your IT department is being rather foolish, in my opinion, deploying new installations of XP 64 since Microsoft discontinued mainstream support for it (more than two years ago) and it's never really been satisfactory.
Anyway, there is no version of iTunes that supports the 64-bit version of Windows XP and almost certainly never will be. If you search the iTunes for Windows forums for "XP 64" you'll find threads describing the process some people have used to "crowbar" iTunes onto XP 64, with varying levels of success, none of them complete. Connecting to iPhones is one of the most problematic issues.
    Regards.

  • HT5318 cannot open itunes on windows 7 64 bit

I am no longer able to open iTunes on windows 7 64 bit.  Have tried "repair" option and remove and redownload.

I am trying to understand the exact sequence of events here:
Firstly the iTunes installer includes Quicktime and you should not have to install it separately.
You downloaded the 32 bit iTunes installer: iTunesSetup.exe.
Normally the correct version should be downloaded automatically so that shouldn't have happened.
When you tried to run it, did it warn you that you had the wrong version and stop without installing anything?
    Then you downloaded iTunes64Setup.exe
What happened when you tried to run that, did you get any error messages? If so give the full text.
What iTunes related programs do you actually have installed, if any?
Check in Programs on the Control Panel.
The following link on uninstalling iTunes lists the programs you need to look for.

I get this complicated error mesage and then the installer rolls back and fails.
I'd like to have a closer look at that error message please.
Generate the error message again. While the error message box is open, hold down the Alt key and hit the PrtSc key. Paste the screenshot into an image file (using a program like Paint), and save the file.
Start a reply here and click the wee camera icon at the top of the reply window. Click "Choose file", browse to the image file, select the file and click "Open". Now click "Insert file" to insert the screenshot into the reply.
