New installation -v- upgrading

Would I be better off doing a clean install of Snow Leopard instead of upgrading on my iMac and MacBook Air, both 6 weeks old. As I am new to the world of Mac I already have my documents on a 3rd party disk drive, so I have no issues other than installing a few programs such as iWork.
Would I benefit more to clean install?

You should know that Apple recommends the default install method, which is not what most users call a "clean" install unless the target volume has no OS on it -- for instance, if it is erased or reformatted. Among experienced Mac users, there is no consensus of opinion if a 'clean install' is better or worse, prudent or a waste of time, or whatever.
My own opinion is that among those that recommend a clean install of some sort, many are basing their opinions on the old (& no longer entirely applicable) install methods of pre-Snow Leopard installers or on vague ideas about "old bits & bytes" that should be purged from the drive that would otherwise somehow cause problems with the new OS. Some just seem to prefer a "hands on" approach or trust their own skills & understanding about what to install more than they trust the programming built into the new installer. Many just don't like the idea of any unused files taking up hard drive space.
However, some reasons are more specific, suggesting a clean install is necessary in certain circumstances, for instance when the HD has formatting or file system problems, & that in effect it is better to be safe than sorry, since users might not know these problems exist.
If this was all there was to it, then it would unquestionably be the best general advice. But it isn't.
For one thing, the new installer has built-in features that depend on a previous installation to decide what to install, such as Rosetta, QuickTime Player 7, & some print drivers. For another, the installer will move certain incompatible applications from an existing installation to an "Incompatible Applications" folder. It also checks the target disk (much like Disk Utility's "Verify Disk") & "phones home" for Leopard-to-Snow Leopard compatibility updates. These steps can be done separately by knowledgeable users & to some extent can be considered no more than conveniences, but that is what many users like about Macs vs. PC's, so that should be taken into account on a user by user basis.
More importantly, a clean install requires recreating or migrating existing system & user settings & such, sometimes manually, & this is both time consuming & potentially a source of errors or unnecessary hassles, especially among less knowledgeable users.
My advice is to consider both the pros & cons of a clean install & decide what is best for you.

    Hi,
I would never recommend doing an OS upgrade of a domain controller.
    The preffered method is to:
    1. Build a new 2012 R2 Server
    2. Install the Domain Controller role
    3. Promote the server to a domain controller - this will extend the schema of your AD to support 2012 - whilst generally fairly safe to do ensure you have relevant backups in place for your domain / forest
    4. Transfer FSMO roles to your new 2012 DC
You can then go ahead and demote the 2008 DC, rebuild it to 2012, and re-promote it do a DC again. Keep doing this for all your DC's
Also you would need to upgrade your exchange first as Exchange 2003 isn't supported with 2012 domain controllers.

  • Satellite L500-126: Win7 upgrade -can I re-activateit after new installation?

I successfully upgraded Windows 7 from my OEM Vista yesterday.
What if in the future, I need to reinstall the whole system?
Can I re-activate Win 7 after the new installation?
PS. My OEM Vista is 64 bit version and my win 7 is the ultimate 64 bit upgrade version
    THX

I hope I understand your question right so here is what I know about it:
When you upgrade original preinstalled Vista you don't need to activate Win7 but if you make clean Win7 installation then you must activate preinstalled version.
With other words to have activations-free Win7 you must install Vista at first using Toshiba recovery DVD and then upgrade it to Win7.

  • Differents between upgrade installation and new installation

    Our processes have some misbi
Our processes sometimes misbehave. We don't know the cause. We have a DR site so we moved everything there and then everything worked with no issue. The applications are using SQL 2012
    SP2.
All the servers are the same in the DR site as the primary site, One of the things we know to be different is that the SQL server installation in the primary site is an upgrade from 2008,
and the one in the DR site is a new installation of SQL 2012.
Do you think there could be a different behaver that is related to type of installation?
Does it make scenes to reinstall the SQL in the primary site as new installation rather than upgrade?

    Hello,
Adding to Shanky response, do the DR SQL Server instances were configured the same (about parallelism, memory, tempdb,
    etc.)?
    Hope this helps.

    Hi,
I had the same problem with my BPC 7 installation yesterday and followed all the proposed solutions in this thread with no luck. When I checked,  the OSoftResSvrZFP_EN.dll was missing - you might be missing this too. Anyway, I solved it by running the BPC 7.0 server installation exe and then selected 'Repair'.

  • DC Offset problem with Peak 4.14 on MacMini after new hard drive upgrade

    Tiger 10.4.11
    Bias Peak 4.14 (24-bit 44.1 AIFF files)
    USBPre 1.5
The reason for this new topic is a problem that developed with Bias Peak 4.14 on my MacMini. Suddenly, when I apply the "Remove DC Offset" DSP process to a recording, the Bias Peak meters may stop displaying correctly.
About 50% of the time, only one meter will respond to the sound, or neither will (the meters work fine on the raw file before I apply the DSP function). The rest of the time, they work normally after DC Offset. I'm still waiting to hear from Bias about this via their forum, but no-one has responded yet. I don't know if this is just a GUI bug or an indication of a recording problem. The really spooky thing is that the problem only shows up part of the time.
This is happening on a new installation of OS X on a new drive that I installed. See a note at the bottom of this post for a hardware issue that may or may not play a role.
I've been recording vinyl successfully for a long time now on my MacMini (24-bit 44.1 AIFF), using a USBPre external A/D converter and Bias Peak (currently v4.14). But recently Peak froze as it was saving a file. I had to do a hard shut down which led to a corrupted system. I'd been meaning to upgrade to a larger drive anyway, so I put a 120 gig drive in.
After first installing/updating OS X on the new drive, and installing/upgrading Bias Peak, I had no problems. But then the control panel for the USBPre froze as I was getting ready to shut down. This worried me, so I ran diagnostics with TechTool and installed eDrive. The meter problem began showing up after this change. I wiped out the partition and reinstalled from scratch again, hoping that this would get things back to normal. But I still have the meter problem after applying DC Offset. Note, I created two partitions on the drive, and put Tiger on the first partition.
The makers of the USBPRe (Sound Devices) say there is nothing about the USBPre or drivers that should be causing this.
So I'm stuck, and faced with the following ideas for what might be wrong:
    1. Peak has a bug that I've somehow triggered. This may or may not be affecting the recording.
    2. Something about my recording hardware/driver has changed that is "corrupting" my recordings sometimes, and this is causing Peak to have trouble metering the sound.
    3. I screwed up my computer hardware and this is screwing up the recordings part of the time. See my upgrade note* about the hardware.
    4. The new drive seems to be a little slower to display folder contents. I wonder if this apparent latency could be causing the DC Offset problem in the original recorded file.
    * Upgrade note: When I tried to put the cover of the Mini back on after upgrading my drive and testing it out, I discovered that I hadn't screwed the drive/fan/DVD setup in correctly. The screws had fallen out and disappeared (my tiny screw driver made it very hard to tighten the screws I guess. I thought I’d done it correctly).
I turned the Mini upside down a couple of times before I discovered the screws missing.. My first attempts to put the cover on with the Mini sitting upright were not successful, so I turned it upside down to take the cover back off. The screws probably fell out then. When I tried putting the cover top down on the table and lowering the Mini into the cover I discovered that the drive/fan/DVD assembly was loose!
The drive is now secured completely except for the screws, and it is working. The slowness I mentioned above is something I noticed before the screws fell out, but obviously the assembly was not secured 100% even before I lost the screws.
I apologize for this convoluted post and hope it is clear enough. Please help if you can, I'm under pressure to finish my recording project.
    Vinyl_Man

    Hello, DaddyPaycheck,
The USBPre is powered by the USB bus, and it is plugged directly into the MacMini.
The screws remain in hiding. I'm amazed that I didn't find them on the motherboard or something like that. If they don't turn up fairly soon, I'll try to get replacements from an Apple service center. And I'll make sure I have a better small screwdriver.
I just did a test with Audacity for OS X and Cool Edit for Windows. I opened files that give me the meter problem in Peak and removed the DC Offset. When I opened the files I had modified in Audacity and Cool Edit, Peak metered the sound correctly. Somehow Peak is sensitive to something in the file that does not bother the other apps, and when the other apps have adjusted the DC Offset, Peak is happy. Peculiar.
I'm thinking about recording with Audacity now instead of Peak. I'm still concerned that something is wrong, though, since I don't understand the problem.

  • Can't start UCM server after new installation of 11.1.1.8 on Microsoft server 2008 R2 SP1 64 bit EE

    Hi All
After new installation of WCC 11.1.1.8 on Microsoft server 2008 R2 SP1 64 bit EE UCM_server1 can’t start. (Please see trace below). WCC 11.1.1.7 run without issues on this environment.
    Steps:
    1. Installation of jrockit-jdk1.6.0_45-R28.2.7-4.1.0
    2. Installation of WLS 10.3.6
    3. Installation of WCC 11.1.1.8
    4. Schema creation by RCU 11.1.1.8
    5. Domain creation by config.cmd with AdminServer, UCM_server1, IBR_server1
    6. Run Admin - (success)
    7. Run NodeManager (optional) - (success)
    8. Run UCM_server1 – failed
Still not works after patching MLR 1 for WCC 11.1.1.8 or upgrade from 11.1.1.7 .
From log files we can saw that problem caused by JniNativeOsUtils.dll file in “<Middleware Home>\Oracle_ECM1\ucm\idc\components\NativeOsUtils\lib\windows-amd64\7.2.1.1”
I replaced JniNativeOsUtils.dll with same file from 11.1.1.7 version and UCM_server1 starts work
I got errors during startup (syNativeOsUtilsNotLoaded and UnsatisfiedLinkError - you can foun them in trace below), but WCC up and works.
I also get error when trying to start SystemProperties or ComponentWithard utility:
Activation context generation failed for "C:\Oracle\MIDDLE~1\USER_P~1\domains\WCC_DO~1\ucm\cs\bin\SystemProperties.exe". Dependent Assembly      Microsoft.VC80.MFC,processorArchitecture="amd64",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",version="8.0.50727.762" could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

  • OEM 10.2.0.1 installation and upgrade to 10.2.0.3

    Dear all,
I want to install the latest version of OEM 10.2.0.3 on Linux RedHat 4. However, after downloading the OEM 10.2.0.3 and reading the release note, I realized that the download is just the 10.2.0.3 upgrade patchset. I have to do a fresh base installation of OEM 10.2.0.1 first. Is this correct?
After installing OEM 10.2.0.1 with an existing 10.2.0.1 database, I need to upgrade OEM 10.2.0.1 to OEM 10.2.0.3 using the patchset I downloaded. Because both OMS and AGENT will be upgraded, I am not sure what installation destination I shoud supply? OMS_HOME, or AGENT_HOME, or just a new home for upgrade? What are the required steps to upgrade OEM 10.2.0.1 to OEM 10.2.0.3?
Are there any documentation or articles that I can follow to do the upgrade?
    Thanks a lot in advanced.
    Xiaoping

There is a README.txt file in the 10.2.0.3 patchset zip file that has the instructions for upgrading 10.2.0.1 OEM to 10.2.0.3.
You download 10.2.0.1 separately which delivers a 10.1.0.4 database. Apply the one-off database patch to the db10g 10.1.0.4 Oracle Home via opatch, then use runInstaller to upgrade to 10.2.0.3 via 3731593. You can optionally create a db10gr2 10.2.0.1 Oracle Home, apply the 10.2.0.3 patchset then run dbua to upgrade the 10.1.0.4 repository database to 10.2.0.3.
You probably would have had fast response posting to the Enterprise Manager Grid Control forum:
    Enterprise Manager
    2. Fresh Installation of Enterprise Manger 10g Grid Control Release 2 and upgrading it to Release 3
In order to install Enterprise Manager 10g Grid Control Release 3, you must install either 10.2.0.1.0 or 10.2.0.2.0 Grid Control environment. This section describes steps to install Enterprise Manager 10g Grid Control Release 3 environment starting with 10.2.0.1.0 (10.2.0.2.0 for Windows) install
2.1 Install Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Release 2
Installing 10g Grid Control Release 3 requires any previous releases of Grid Control, that is any 10.2.x.x.x installation, and upgrade to 10.2.0.3.0 release. If you do not have a previous release, but want to have a 10.2.0.3.0 Grid Control environment, then first install 10.2.0.1.0 Grid Control (10.2.0.2.0 for Windows), and then upgrade it to 10.2.0.3.0. Start with the Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Release 2 Grid Control media pack (DVD) and install 10.2.0.1.0 (10.2.0.2.0 for Windows)
    - Insert DVD into your computer (note: It is better to copy the DVD contents to local hard disk for faster performance)
    - Run runInstaller (setup.exe for Windows) to start installation
    - When asked for "install type" option, choose "Enterprise Manager using New Database" option
    - Complete installation as per install guide
Important: For information about installing 10.2.0.1.0 and 10.2.0.2.0, refer to the installation guides available at:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation/oem.html
    2.2 Apply required patches
In the case of Grid Control environment installed via "Enterprise Manager using New Database" option, repository database version is 10.1.0.4.0. Before upgrading to 10.2.0.3, apply the patch for bug 4329444 on the Database Home. In order to apply this patch for the Solaris platform:
    - Copy the p4329444_10104_<platform>.zip file from the DVD to any directory on the host which has the repository database running on.
    - Unzip the file using following command:
    $ unzip p4329444_10104_<platform>.zip
    - Follow the instruction in 4329444/README.txt to apply the patch
For more detail on this, refer to the release note.
2.3 Install Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Release 3
2.3.1 Copy the p3731593_102030_<platform name>.zip patch set installation archive from the DVD to any directory on the host which has the Oracle Management Service running on it.
    2.3.2 Perform the installation
    - Enter the following command to unzip and extract the installation files from the downloaded image described in section 1.2:
    $ unzip p3731593_102030_<platform name>.zip
This extracts the files to the "3731593" directory.
    - Navigate to the 3731593/Disk1 subdirectory
         $ cd 3731593/Disk1
    - Set the ORACLE_HOME variable to the Oracle Management Service(OMS) oracle home.
    - Execute the runInstaller (setup.exe for Windows)
         $ ./runInstaller
The upgrades process then upgrades the Oracle Management Service (OMS), Oracle Management Repository and the Management Agent on the same host as the OMS to the latest Enterprise Manager 10g release 3 version.
Important: The same Patch Set can be used for patching OMS,Repository, and Management Agent. For more detail on installing the patchset, refer to the release note.
2.4 Optional: Upgrading Repository Database to 10.2.0.3
If you installed Grid Control 10.2.0.1.0 (10.2.0.2.0 for Windows) via "Enterprise Manager using New Database" option, your repository database version is 10.1.0.4. In order to upgrade your repository database to 10.2.0.3, follow the steps below after upgrading your Grid Control environment to Enterprise Manager 10g release 3.
    a. Upgrade the database to 10.2.0.1
    b. Install 10.2.0.3 database patchset

  • What can I remove from a new installation to free up space

I use Retrospect to backup 10.4.6. I only use the Mac for Logic Audio - and I've got 20GB of files on a new installation.
    This seems a bit high?
Is there a way to cut down the total size of the files by 5GB - or some significant amount?

    Hi Les,
Is you HD partitioned? If so, then non-Apple apps could be moved to the other partition. For example, I have Quicken and M$ Office on the 2nd non OS Partition. If Upgrades or ??? ask you where to put them then the other partition is safe. Apple apps should stay in the OS part or they won't upgrade properly.
Putting them on a bootable FW HD may be possible but I have no exprience w that.

  • New installations

I'm planning out a new installation of Sun VDI using VirtualBox as the desktop providers. If we deploy before 3.1 is released does anybody know what the supported upgrade paths will be? Would I have to install 3.0 and then upgrade to 3.1 when it's released, or is there an upgrade path from 3.1 EA? 3.0 is not sufficient so I would either have to postpone, which I'm not sure I can do, or go with a different solution.

Upgrade from 3.0 to 3.1 will be supported but there won't be an upgrade path from 3.1EA to 3.1.
    Geoff.

  • New installation of BO XI R2 SP4 and "BO PROD PACK (v2) XI R2 WIN INTL"

    Hi Experts,
I would like to make a new installation on a windows 2003 server.
I found in the download page of BusinessObjecs Enterprise XI R2 four files:
    1. BO PROD PACK (v2) XI R2 WIN INTL
    2. BO BOE XI R2 SP4 WIN INTL 1 of 2
    3. BO BOE XI R2 SP4 WIN INTL 2 of 2
    4. BOE XI R2 SP4 Collaterals INTL
    Questions:
    1) Can I install BO BOE XI R2 SP4 WIN INTL and then BO PROD PACK (v2) XI R2 WIN INTL ?
in the manual "xir2_sp4_install_win_unix_en.pdf"  it says tha I have to install SP2 full the productivity pack and then upgrade to SP4.
I this still true? Where can I find BO XI r2 sp2 full install?
    2) I have full install of SP1, that means I have to install:
    SP1,
    then SP2,
    then productivity pack ,
    then SP4,
then "BusinessObjects Enterprise XI R2 - LA Fix for SP4". Is it possible?
    3) What contains BOE XI R2 SP4 Collaterals INTL ? Where is the documentation of it?
    Ciao

    Hello
You actually have the order for the install in point number 2:
    1.) Install XIR 2 SP1
    2.) Install Service Pack 2
    3.) Install productivity pack
    4.) Install Service Pack (SP)4
5.) If you have a LA Fix that is specific to SP 4 then install that
What are you looking for in terms of  BOE XI R2 SP4 Collaterals?   The documentation should be included with the download of the files.  Did you download something and there was no documentation?  Can you please explain.  Thank you.

  • Pacman issues for new installation

    Hi Folks,
New to Arch. Core x64 iso. Carried out the installation okay using the Beginners guide wiki.
Having trouble with pacman to the point it is driving me bananas. This is the Post installation part of the beginners guide we are talking about, so there is no GUI involved.
Network is fine. Unchecked mirrors in the mirrorlist near to my location. Run the following without any errors.
    # pacman Syy
So chosen mirrors are okay so now we go on to update the system.
    I ran # pacman -Syu
upgraded pacman on the first run as expected, and was asked to run pacman-key --init. Run up against the message...
Not enough random bytes available. Please do some other work to give the OS a chance to collect more entropy.
System hung there. Had to force reboot (Ctl Alt Del).
After a reboot, tried running pacman -Syu again. This time it pulled a lot of upgrades. I continued with the proposed up grades only for each to fail with a generated key failed message.
Went over to windows and a VM, and went through the installation there to see if I could get a fix.
This time system is 32 bit 686. went through same procedure. got to the same point with the same error message.
    Googled and found this post...https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=128340.
There are a number of proposed solutions. None of which seemed to apply to GUI less new installation.
While system was hung looking for more entropy, I started entering numerous Ctl^X inputs at the keyboard. After a while it completed. I ran pacman-key --init again and and it seemed to complete okay. No errors any way.
So I then issued the command pacman -Syu again.
This time it downloaded a s*** load of updates, Checked the downloads, cant remember the exact details. Then came up with the message no packages were installed due to files being duplicate or conflicting.
There were numerous updates. How can I do the first time update. Help required. Remember no GUI.

Sorry for the delay in replying.
Okay, I moved locale.sh to tmp and renamed locale.sh.old
run the updates, there were errors, but since I was on a non GUI console, couldnot scroll back to see what messages the errors produced. There was a kernel upgrade in the package list. On reboot, system couldnot find the filesystem or kernel or boot partition. System is now goosed.
Reading more from wiki and threads posted here. I decided I needed the latest snapshot. Also read somewhere that the best idea was to do a network install.
so I started again with a new network install. Went okay or so I thought. Remember I am in the installation here. Downloaded the packages for just a basic core set up.
When the installation began installing the packages, the PgP signature problem raised it's head again. Now this is the installation procedure here over the network with the latest snapshot...
    archlinux-2012.03.07_14-30-01-netinstall-i686
All I ahve done is let the installer run, selecting source, set location and time, prepared the hard disk. I choose grub, configured the network okay. The installation process then downloaded the core files but installation failed.
    Messages...immediately after download.
    Checking package integrity
Warning: Public keyring not found; have you run pacman-key --init
    Error: linux-api-headers key F999...blah..blah unknown
Error: key F999...blah..blah could not be looked up remotely.
All other packages have similar errors, the procedure finishes with the following...
Error failed to commit transaction (invalid or corrupt package (PGP Signature))
    Package installation failed.
What is going on? This is the installation process, no way to access the filesystem as yet, not that I know of anyway.
Other people installing Arch over the network must be experiencing the same problem.
    Does Arch actually work
Running install on VMWare on Windows.

  • Need new license for upgrade of Sun Web 6.1 SP3 to SP5?

I want to update my Sun Java System Web Server 6.1 2004Q3 SP3 to Sun Java System Web Server (Multi-Platform) 6.1 SP5 International Edition (essentially going from 6.1 SP3 to SP5). Will this version work with the license that I purchased last November 2005? It seems some of these downloads have a trial license that expires, since it is a full-install rather than just an upgrade piece.

None of the Web Server 6.1 downloads are crippled or time bombed in any way. If you have a license for 6.1, you can (and should!) apply the latest 6.1 service pack without purchasing an additional license.
The 6.1 service pack downloads can be used for new installations or to upgrade an existing 6.1 installation. To upgrade an existing installation, run the setup program and instruct it to install to the directory that contains the existing installation.
