New Intel Chipset and SATA3 mSATA SSDs

Since the 4th generation Intel processors are coming, that means they'll probably support the 4th generation chipsets, QM87 in particular for us.
Since the QM87 chipset supports four SATA3 lanes, I hope this means I'll be able to run an mSATA SSD at SATA3 speeds instead of SATA2.
The speed differences are negligible for humans, but it would be nice to get what I paid for.

There are existing systems with 6 Gbps mSATA ports. The port in the W530 is only 3 Gbps because there is a limit of two 6 Gbps SATA lanes in the QM77 chipset, and Lenovo thought they would be better used for the 2.5" bay and the Ultrabay. Adding more 6 Gbps SATA lanes allows for the mSATA port in the existing design to use 6 Gbps SATA.
NGFF/M.2 supports SATA Express (12 Gbps) as well as 6 Gbps SATA, but will of course require an additional port in the notebook due to the different form factor.
Thinkpad W530, i7-3720QM, 1920x1080 screen, 32GB RAM, dual SSDs (Samsung 830, Crucial M4 mSATA), Quadro K2000M, 9-cell battery, DVD burner, backlit keyboard, Bluetooth, Intel 6300 wireless card

  • Moving Public from G4 XServe to new Intel XServe and preserve permissions

We have purchased a new Intel XServe (10.4.8) and need to move the Public folder and Users folder from our old XServe G4 (10.3.9) to the new one, and would like to preserve the permissions.
Both of these are OD replicas; there is an XServe G5 (10.3.9) which is the OD Master.
Apple Tech support tells me it is not possible.
I have tried ditto, tar, scp, and a Finder copy to an external FireWire drive. None of these attempts have successfully preserved the permissions.
    tar cf - * | (cd /target; tar xfp -)
    ditto -rsrc /oldpath /newpath
I have searched the archives, but not found any answers.

Thank you for the link - I will try Dan's tar syntax tomorrow (and hope there are no differences with 10.3.9).
    /usr/bin/tar -cvf - xyzzy | /usr/bin/tar -C target -xvf -
I also like his hint about handling remote files.

  • Problems sharing an InDesign file between new Intel Mac and PC

I created an InDesign document on my new Intel MacBook using Rosetta I assume, only to find I am unable to open it at work on a PC running Windows. On the PC I get a message that the filename contains one or more unrecognized characters.(Filename was a short five letter word.) It suggests changing the name in Windows, which I tried, but it still will not open. In the past I have effortlessly moved InDesign documents between my old G4 iMac using OS 10.3.9 and the PC. The only difference now is OS 10.4 and the intel based MacBook. Before this problem however, InDesign, which seemed to work fine in Rosetta, had some trouble holding onto fonts. Linked files would turn into gobbledegook that looked like a missing font (font used was Arial, which is a universal font) when the MacBook was shut down for a while, then restarted. Relinking to the original Word file seemed to fix the problem, until the next time I shut down the MacBook, when it recurred. I am tired of rebuilding the same document over and over, and now being unable to open it on the PC where it will be printed from. Must I go back to my older, slower machine to build this document? Or is there something I am missing?
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4)

I resolved this myself. The problem turned out to be a file path name error.

  • New Intel dual and Final Cut don't play tutorial.

    Hi,
Just installed my new Final Cut Studio on a new Intel dual core 1,83 GHz.
After a few hours of installing/upgrading all, I wanted to play the first PAL tutorial I copied to my Harddrive.
But as soon as Lower third titles appear, the system freezes.
I tried safe RT but than I have to render first.
I lowered compression rate, I used half the frame rate, I copied all to an other firewire disc, I don't use any other softs at the same time. But the system freezes in the tutorial with only 1 video track, 2 audio tracks and a title.
I'm a little dissappointed, cause I had a long discussion with Apple on the phone about the configuration and NOT wanting to wait for rendering anymore. I used a G4 1,33 but it has the same performance! What could be the problem?

Thanks for reacting, busy untill 02.00(Amsterdam) in the morning.
Using Final Cut Studio with Final Cut Pro 5.1.2(latest update I think).
1GHz Ram and a MiniMac 1,83 dual core with external 7200 rpm firewire disc.
Sequence setting compressor PAL-DV 75 percent.
I spoke on the phone with techsupport of the Apple Store before buying all the stuff and this config should work fine. Also I read the systemdemands on the FCP site and all seems to be in order. But still need to render even with newly created sequence and easy setup PAL-DV. Back to the Apple Store?

  • New intel chips, and Logic Pro 7

How well does logic pro 7 run on the new intel chip sets?

According to users on the Logic forum here, Logic Pro 7.2 and above (the Universal Binary release of Logic) works very well on Intel Mac. Anything below 7.2 is PowerPC only, and will work very poorly on an Intel Mac, if it works at all.

  • Printing problem with new Intel iMac and Indesign CS3

    Hi there,
this might not be the right place to ask for, but has anybody here experienced printing problems in Indesign CS3 with Tiger?
I just installed the software and tried to print out of Indesign, but nothing. I can see on the panel that data is beeing received but no printing action. And this is just out of the new Indesing CS3.
    Any suggestions?
    Best
    Rolf

Our office is printing fine from ID & PS CS3. This is from Intel & PPC Mac's running 10.4.9.
What is your printer and how is it configured for printing, ie USB or IP.
Also, have a look at the cups error log. You can find this via System Profiler > Software > Logs. This will show which process is failing for the spooled job. You can post it back here for more help.

  • Boot from mSATA SSD in Probook 650

Hi guys and girls, Is it possible to add an mSATA (NGFF) SSD in the Hp Probook 650 G1 (F1N78EA) and boot from it? The technical manual does desribe that there is a slot for a mSATA flash cache module for Intel SRT, and that mSATA SSD's are expected later. So I assume it should work? From the specsheet: "32 GB M.2 (NGFF)Optional 32 GB mSATA flash cache module* support for Intel Smart Response Technology. (Available only with standard non-SEDhard drive.)*mSATA SSD is planned to be available in August 2013." Thanks a lot.

I had a breakthrough. And I can't believe I didn't think of this earlier - or that HP support didn't just suggest it right away. It's a really simple solution. You can't boot from a M.2 device directly. But you can boot the M.2 windows installation from the sata connected device (hdd/ssd). So if you just install windows on the sata device first, you can utilize the 100mb system partition for all other windows versions, including any on the M.2 device. No diskpart needed (assuming you have already initialized your M.2 ssd so it can be detected in windows)No BCDboot commands needed. Tested with windows 7 sp1 x64 professional.Bios settings & my notes at the buttom.Bios settings may need to be tweaked for win8/10. Step 1: Install windows on your sata attached device (hdd/ssd).Step 2: Boot into the newly installed windows*Step 2.2: Install windows from inside your first windows installation on your M.2 device.Step 3: Reboot, boot using the OS manager (which will appear in the boot order when more than 1 OS is detected). It should be top boot priority automatically.Step 3.2: Select the correct windows installation when prompted, it should be the top one.Step 4: Delete the windows installation from the boot list using cmd->msconfig. *If you want to avoid having the optical drive taking up the D: drive-letter, change it before installing windows to the M.2 device. This is purely optional, and only meant for the drive-letter obsessive people, such as myself. I have yet to find a way to end up having the M.2 windows installation as the C: drive.Right now my M.2 SSD is the D: drive, and the HDD (containing the first windows installation) is the C: drive.  Bios settings & notes:Fast boot: enabledBoot mode: UEFI hybridSata device mode: ACHI For some reason 'startup menu delay' must not be set at 0, I have mine set at 5 seconds. At 0 seconds the system will boot 'too fast' and the M.2 device will appearently not have been switched on in time for windows booting. You will get a device-undetected error. The partition style of the sata device and the M.2 device must be the same. Either both must be MBR, or both must be GPT.I tested both MBR and GPT, they both work.

  • MacBookPro5,1 and Samsung 840 SSD

    Hello all,
    i have a MacBookPro5,1 and used a Intel X-25 for years.
Now i upgraded to a new Intel 520 and ran into massive compatibility issues. As i know there was a MCP79/Sandforce SF-2281 issue.
To prevent same issues with my next upgrade i want to ask if there any known issues about MacBookPro5,1 and Samsung 840 SSD?
btw. the x-25 ist reported and negotiated with 3gps and works like a charm.

Your issues were probably because of the crap SandForce controllers.  Worse thing you can do is buy an SSD driven by those chipsets.  The 840 Pros are nice but the 840 should be fine as well.  Just be aware that the write speed isn't as fast on those.

  • Can I run adobe master collection in a windows partition on a basic mbp 13" with only the intel chipset?

can I run adobe master collection in a windows partition on a basic mbp 13" with only the intel chipset?
I want to install 16 gb ram but I don't think I can change the lack of video card. I wanted this basic machine because it has fairly long battery life. I don't need or want retina at this time. My model is the mid 2012 model. I am running the adobe collection for mac, I want to run the windows versions. Is it possible? What is the most ram I could access using something like fusion 5, assuming I could get fusion 5 to work? would it refuse to run because of the intel chipset and lack of video card?
If I'm wrong and there is a way to add a video card to this model, could some version of fusion and windows 7 access more than 2 gb operating ram?
What  cost would I be incurring, and would it be cheaper to buy a windows laptop with more ram than I could access via a virtual machine?
I want to work on a client's work in the windows versions of the creative suite, with occasional usage of after effects for windows, and to use some web plug-ins only available in windows versions, and to try some windows-only video and audio software.
thanks for any suggestions. While many people have told me I can run everything on my macbook, I am concerned about what I think is a limited amount of ram that can be accessed over the virtual machine partition softwares, and I don't know if what I want to attempt is actually possible.
My mbp os is 10.8.2 on a 2.5 GHz intel core i5 4 gb 1600MHz DDR3 with 500 hard drive. the basic 13" mid 2012 machine.
I'm hoping to install 16 G of opertating ram to allow more adobe programs to run concurrently- just when I am working on the mac side.
also, off track but, for years I have wanted a small  machine that is more easily portable than my 15" machines. I have only had this used machine for a few weeks, but already I have been very satisfied and used it for presentations at clients. I don't want an air because I really want the dvd burner and player. No matter what apple says about wireless, there are decades of legacy work stored on optical discs all over the world, and I don't want to be unable to open something at a client's office because I don't have a dvd drive. Additionally, I have very large files I want to transfer via ethernet or firewire so that the transfer will take less time and be more secure than wifi. I resist apple's trend to make every machine a disposable toy that is viable only a year or so. I have read reviews that label the mbp it a poor value compared to the air. If all you need to do is text and communicate via wifi, many devices will sufice, and an air is certainly the most elegant. But what about the cost of large ssd's and protecting the drive against damage from shock? I want to be able to move this thing around and the small size is much safer inside my padded bag when I sit in narrow airplane seats, crowded trains and other congested spaces. I am much more likely to be able to borrow a large screen in a client's office ( with the use of one of the three adapters I had to buy) than to be able to borrow a dvd drive that has drivers for mac os 10.8.2. I suspect this may be the last generation of machines that have optical drives and ethernet, and that was why I purchased it so that I could continue to do work into the next few years. I am impressed by the retina display, but I need long battery life. And as beautiful as the retina display is, it is even more of a problem when trying to cross platform with the windows world. I wish I could infuence apple to do a trial product flow for a machine designed to work with 80% of the business world that uses windows. How spectacular that would be. With all their expertise and adept hardware design, to create a machine that cross platforms better than a windows machine itself works? Now that would be an accomplishment.  Instead of 8 or 9 percent of the total computer sales, why not aim for a higher percentage? Smart devices will keep moving toward portable computers in power, anyway.

Fusion should work on your machine and if you put 16 GB of RAM in (see http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade/DDR3_160 0MHz_SDRAM), Fusion can access a good portion of that. Also, in a Virtual Machine, the guest OS is presented with Fusion's video card emulation, not what's in hardware on your Mac. Of course, finding Windows 7 now that Win 8 has been released could take some doing and the Win 8 Pro upgrade price is supposed to jump to $200 the end of the month. Add that to the price of Fusion and the extra RAM and you're beginning to get into the realm of low end real PC's.
As to cross platform, I assume you're aware of BootCamp (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1461).

  • GT60 2OD-026US mSATA SSD question. Please help.

I'm getting the GT60 2OD-026US.  Currently, it has a 256GB Samsung PM841 mSATA SSD Drive in slot 1 with my OS installed on it. The other two slots are currently empty.   The second HD has a 750GB 7200RPM Serial-ATA II installed.
My question.  I would really like to install one more mSATA SSD in slot 2 for now, but also slot 3 down the road.  I asked the tech where I'm getting it if I could add an Intel 525 256GB in slot 2 and he told me no.  He said I needed the same brand and size mSATA installed in slot 2 and the same for slot 3 if I eventually wanted one there too. He wouldn't explain why this would be the case, he just told me that was the way it was. Is this true?  Can I only get fill up the other slots with the same brand and size mSATA SSDs?
If it is not true, what mSATA's seem to be the most compatible with the GT60 2OK-026US?  I would really like to expand my SSD options.
Any help, information and/or explanation would be greatly appreciated.

That's rubbish. You can use any msata SSD, it's just a drive. There is no reason for that.

  • Clarification on migration from iMac G5 running 10.4.11 to new intel iMac

    Hello,
Although a lot of you have already posted on this subject, I just wanted to get a clarification, please. I just got a new intel iMac and I would like to transfer all my files from my iMac G5 (10.4.11). Should I just use the Migration Assistant and that's it? Will the two OS conflict with each other? And also, is it possible to continue to use 10.4.11 on my new iMac?
Thank you very much! I hope Ms. Miriam reads this one. She seems to be very knowledgeable!
    -Pedro

    Not Miriam, but...
You can use Migration Assistant to go from a Tiger Mac to a Leopard Mac. You will be running the Migration Assistant utility on the new iMac. You might employ FireWire Target Disk Mode (on the old iMac) as part of the process, to connect the two Macs.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
A new iMac has one FireWire 800 port and no FireWire 400 port (which is the type on the iMac G5). So you will need to get a 9-pin (800) to 6-pin (400) adapter, or a cable that has an 800 end and a 400 end (if you want to use the FireWire method for connection). They are available here
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/FIR1369AD/
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/1394B96036/
You can also use a wired or wireless network connection between the two Macs, to do the data transfer.
And also, is it possible to continue to use 10.4.11 on my new iMac?
No. Macs can generally run the OS that came with it, or LATER (up to hardware limitations), but not earlier. So if the new iMac had 10.5.6 pre-installed, it cannot run any earlier version of Mac OS X.

  • ISight/new intel mini mic problem

    Hi,
I've got an iSight camera that I've been using on a just retired eMac. I just purchased a new intel mini and I've been trying to set up ichat. However, the microphone won't work at all on the new computer. The video seems to be ok but no sound.
    So far I've:
Checked all settings in System Preferences > sound
Checked all settings in iChat > Preferences > microphone
    Started and quit GarageBand
Under the sound control panel, the input level meter doesn't respond on my mini when the iSight mic input is selected. However, when plugging the camera back into my emac, the sound seems to be fine and responds accordingly. When I start a video chat, the connection doctor shows great video stats but 0% audio transmission to the person with whom I'm chatting. Likewise, the ichat preview input meter doesn't show that the mic is functioning correctly.
It seems that this must be related to an audio issue on my mac mini in some way but I'm out of ideas right now. I'm especially bothered that the system preferences line in seems to be buggered.
What next folks? Maybe the next thing is to call for service?
    Thanks,
    Cory

    Hi,
I've poured over Ralph's advice and web pages prior to posting my first inquiry but still haven't had any success.
Is there a way to conclusively isolate the problem to the mini and the sound input? I tested the mic on the emac again and the isight works just as it should. Audio and video, both. I've checked that all of the settings between the emac and mini are the same, including all isight prefs and sound prefs. However, the mini seems to not pick up any input from the isight microphone.
    Thanks,
    Cory

  • HELP WITH TRANSFER FROM IBOOK G4 TO NEW INTEL MAC

    HI
I just got a new intel mac and want to transfer all my stuff from my ibook G4 ... I tried the migration assistant, I plugged in the fire wire and turned on my ibook whilst pressing the T down. I get the firewire icon on my old machine but the new one still says 'waiting for old machine to restart' It just wont do anything when it gets to that point.
I dont think I'm doing anything wrong but the thing is gettting me aggravated to say the least.
    HELP PLEASE!!

Karen can't help there but wanted to warn you.
I did the same thing--iBook G4 to intel iMac, did a "transfer all my stuff" and had problems. At least one G4 program caused my iMac to crash at start-up (it was a special anti-virus program). Also some messy things like the iMac though it was on a wireless network after the copy (like my iBook was) when it was, in fact, on a wired internet connection (it still worked but I got errors in the console log). Just messy.
Once you get your problem sorted out I'd be careful about which programs I transfered over.

  • X220 with mSATA ssd always freezes when docks/undock from the docking station

When I try to dock or undock the X220, the laptop freezed, nothing esle you can do but reboot the computer.
It's really annoying. the laptop works fine if you don't do the dock/undock when it's running.
I think the BIOS should be the latest one.
    Docking: ThinkPad 0A33932 for X220
    Laptop: X220I5-25404G80G(msata)+320GWin7Pro-32
Is anyone here who have the same problem or any suggestions?
    Any reply appreciated.
    Regards,
    Sven

    Hello,
    A few things to check:
Make sure that both the X220 and the mSATA SSD have the latest BIOS/firmware installed
Make sure X220 has latest ThinkVantage device drivers and Microsoft OS updates installed
Try running a CHKDSK on the SSD
Even if those don't solve the problem, knowing that you've checked them will help rule those out as issues.
