New Intel Xserve crashing.

My College bought a new Intel Xserve last month.
I have set it up and configured all the iMacs in the art department to access it and created user accounts for all the students. The server has been happily working for around three weeks now, however over the last two days the server has locked up twice. Users can't authenticate and I cant us ARD to remote control it. If I go to the server room and physically control the server I can use the mouse but all input doesn't seem to register. For example if I try and click on Server Admin the app doesn't launch, I can click on force quit and get the same results, if I press applealtescape force quit doesn't appear.
Has anyone else experienced these kinds of problems with their Xserve or could give any indication of what the problem might be? I can provide dumps of any server log you request.

This sound like it could be related to the networking hardware. Any chance that you have a defective switch or router?

Does anyone know if it's possible to run bootcamp on the new Intel XServe machines?
Boot Camp Assistant tells me I need to upgrade the firmware on the XServe before proceeding, but I cannot find this for the new XServes.
Does anyone know if this is possible?

Are you sure about that? hwmond simply logs the hardware status and sends emails if there's a problem. There's nothing in the man page that hints that hwmond is responsible for adjusting the fan speeds. Althouth I don't know for sure, I'd expect that there's firmware-level control of fan speeds based on temperature sensor inputs, not OS-level control.

ECC would be handled by the (hardware) memory controller, not by the OS.
There might be no mechanism to check the state of the ECC (e.g. count errors), but I'd still expect to get the benefits.

Again, I'd expect this to be handled by the firmware, not by the OS. hwmond is probably responsible for detecting the failure and reporting it (e.g. via Server Monitor and/or email), but I would still expect the basic power load balancing and redundancy to work - you'd may just need to periodically check the LEDs on the back to check PSU state.
Note, I'm not saying Boot Camp will work, or that it won't work, just that I don't expect these hardware-level features to be affected.

Moving Public from G4 XServe to new Intel XServe and preserve permissions

We have purchased a new Intel XServe (10.4.8) and need to move the Public folder and Users folder from our old XServe G4 (10.3.9) to the new one, and would like to preserve the permissions.
Both of these are OD replicas; there is an XServe G5 (10.3.9) which is the OD Master.
Apple Tech support tells me it is not possible.
I have tried ditto, tar, scp, and a Finder copy to an external FireWire drive. None of these attempts have successfully preserved the permissions.
tar cf - * | (cd /target; tar xfp -)
ditto -rsrc /oldpath /newpath
I have searched the archives, but not found any answers.

Resolve the Ethernet Port Issue of New Intel Xserve

Hi all,
I want to get Clarify the Issues in new Intel Xserve 2.26GHz Quad-Core Xeon "Nehalem" processor. The Network Connectivity of Ethernet is Shows Wrong in System Preference. If I Connect the Ehternet in Port 1, the Port 2 also Shows Connected without Pluging the Ethernet Cable in Port 2.
Port 2 is Shows Green When No Connectivity of Port1 and Port2.
I Tried in 3 Xserves with the above Configuration, all the Server Gives the same Issue. I even Formatted and Reinstalled with all the updates but the Problem prolong.
Awaiting your replies/suggestions.

Call Apple Support for assistance; this looks to be a nasty error with multiple new Xserve boxes and given these are likely covered under their initial warranty, which implies there's something seriously weird with 10.5.6 or 10.5.7, or with the Xserve early 2009 boxes, or firmware, or with what the configuration tools allow.

New intel Xserve with Leopard Server setup assistance....

Currently I have inherited the following setup - G5 Xserve running 10.4.10 Server which has the following services running = Kerio MailServer, AFP, DHCP, DNS, Firewall, NAT, OD, VPN and Windows. This Xserve is also connected to an Apple RAID via fibre channel for file sharing and also to a Tape multi-changer backup unit via scsi.
I have just bought a new Intel Xserve and have installed 10.5 Server on it. I have this server as I would like to get iCal Server and Directory up and running and eventually share some of the G5 services. For iCal Server and Directory I assume ill need the 10.5 Server set up as Open Directory Master but my worry is I have that already on my G5 Xserve. If I was to migrate the 25 usernames from there to the 10.5 Server, would every user still be able to connect to the RAID (as the RAID is still physically connected to the G5 Xserve) for file sharing?
I hope some one could advise or recommend a better way, let me know if you need me to try and clarify the question better!

Intel Xserves Crash only on weekends

We have 10 Intel XServes that we received in early December. For some reason anywhere between 2-6 of the 10 crash and become unresponsive, only on the weekends, usually Saturdays. Very odd.
I've been checking them every weekend since we've purchased them and it has been consistent for the last 5+ weeks. They crash only on weekends.
I found this in the crashreporter log on one of the servers, they all have similar logs:

The "drone" is our encoding software. That may be the cause, but i'm not entirely sure of course.

New Intel iMac crashes after a screen flash

My new Intel iMac keeps crashing. When I'm using Photoshop CS3 the screen flashes and then the machine crashes. Did a search but couldn't find anyone else reporting the same problem. I updated the recent firmware update from Apple.

You indicate your system is new. Your best course of action would be to contact Applecare (or take it to an Apple store) for diagnosis and/or repair (under warranty).

Old Apple xserve Raid 1.24 and New Intel Xserve

Quick question - i currently have an Apple G5 xserve setup with an apple xserve raid {1.24} as a file sharing server in my studio
ideally i am looking to get my xserve upgraded to the new intel version but would like to know if the old xserve raid would still be compatible with the new xserve?

Yes - it will work just fine. The only issue is that you'll need a new Fiber channel card for the Intel XServe since it only supports PCIe cards, not PCI-X used by the previous XServes.

Brand new Intel Xserve Intel - blinking yellow light

Hello:
I was wondering if anyone had any information on this.
I am the design/production/IT manager at a publishing company where we just purchased a brand new Xserve Intel. It is a quad core 2.8 GHz model with 2GB of RAM, 80GB internal hard drive, and a few external FireWire 800 drives attached. It's been a truly great machine so far, but there are a couple of problems we've been trying to figure out since we got it out of the box.
Upon powering the unit up for the first time until present, the yellow system identifier light on the front panel of the machine has been blinking nonstop. It's following a pattern of blinking very fast 3 or 4 times, followed by a 1 to 2 second period of being off. The yellow indicator light on the right hand rear side of the machine has also been blinking with the one on the front panel in tandem. The operations manual indicated a few possible problems, including the enclosure lock being on or being in an alarm condition, both of which have been ruled out. Pushing the button makes the light blink very rapidly also, but with no pause in between.
Our IT consultant from corporate headquarters was recently at our office and recommended that I call AppleCare to ensure that there were no hardware issues with the machine. The technician I spoke with stated that the blinking yellow light problem can be any one of about 4 dozen different things but as long as we were all able to connect to it and haven't had anything strange happen with our files, we should be good to go. At that time, our files were still migrating from the old Xserve to the new one, but even with that being over, the lights still continue to flash.
The other problem we've been experiencing is while in the Server Monitor utility. On the main information screen, the server name is blank, the IP address is showing up correctly, and the status summary reads "failure to connect." The log is set to update every ten seconds and keeps spitting out a "failed to contact server" error.
Everything is appearing and working correctly in the Server Admin utility.
Any information regarding either of these problems would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Just a couple of other general questions I had for now...I've done a little investigating and noticed a couple of things, I'm wondering now if I'd be better off just tearing this thing down and reconfiguring it...unfortunately the person that was sent out here from corporate didn't do the best job of setting anything up!
1. I noticed that we are hooked up to the second ethernet port vs. the first one. A couple of days back when I switched it to the first port, no one was able to sign or access the server.
2. I recall that the new Xserve kept crashing in the middle of the OS software update (not sure which build or version it was, but it was the version that was just over 900 megabytes). The original operating system needed to be installed a total of three times as a result of this, just to get us to the point where we're at now.
3. It appears that the LOM is the first thing that needs to be configured for everything else to run smoothly (although I could be wrong?)
4. The biggest problem we encountered was migrating our files from the old Xserve to the new. We have a base configuration Xserve and our drive setup is a 750 GB Lacie D2 Quadra that's connected via FireWire 800. The old drive the files were on was on the verge of death and we were fortunate enough to get all the files moved to it before it finally conked out. Permissions on about 75% of the files were wrecked and the only complete fix was running a third party software application called Passenger (http://www.macinmind.com/?pid=2&progid=1&subpid=1). This was the only thing that worked in its entirety to get the permissions fixed.

Have a new Xserve with LOM. Problem is that after about 1/2 an hour of monitoring with the Server Monitor application from my desktop MacPro the Xserve stops responding via Server Monitor. The only way to get it to work again is to reboot the server. Not good. Anyone else seeing this behavior? Anyone have a fix or can someone from Apple confirm this is a known problem?

Ok, Having fought with this for the last 2 days, lack of solid documentation, etc, here's my results:
First set dns and reversedns (obviously)
EN0 set to 10.0.1.51
EN1 Disabled
ILO1 set to 10.0.1.52
ILO2 set to 0.0.0.0
This configuration worked, occasionally, but had numerous "Failed to contact server", and remote ipmitool was SLOW.
EN0 set to 10.0.1.51
EN1 Disabled
ILO1 set to 0.0.0.0
ILO2 set to 10.0.1.52
This configuration worked, even less than the first, and remote ipmitool acted slow, but returned nothing.
EN0 set to 10.0.1.51
EN1 set to 10.0.1.52
ILO1 set to 0.0.0.0
ILO2 set to 10.0.1.52
This configuration worked, occasionally, but had numerous "Failed to contact server", and remote ipmitool was SLOW.
EN0 set to 10.0.1.51
EN1 set to 0.0.0.0 (Static IP, and all fields cleared)
ILO1 set to 0.0.0.0
ILO2 set to 10.0.1.52
This configuration works, consistanly and remote ipmitool was very fast.
The command I was using to test ipmitool was:
$ ipmitool -H 10.0.1.52 -U USERNAME -P PASSWORD chassis status
In addition, I found that ANY changes to the IP for EN1 or ILO1/2 caused the ILO module to get lost, and require a reboot. (unplug method)
Thus, this is the method I found to get it working, after setting DNS and RDNS for the 2 IP addresses I was to use:
1) Unplug the power from the XServe for 10 seconds at least (others recommend 30, but I believe that as soon as all lights are off, that's sufficient)
2) In Network Preferences, set up Built-in Ethernet 1 as you'd like for whatever network access you will need.
3) In Network Preferences, enable (if off) Built-in Ethernet 2, and clear all fields. IP address will default to 0.0.0.0, Subnet Mask will default to 255.255.255.0, and all other fields will be blank.
4) In server admin, use "Configure local Machine" to default all values on Port 1 so that IP and gateway are 0.0.0.0 and subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, then switch to Port 2, configure the settings you want the ILO port to use. (do not use the same IP as EN0 obviously).
5) Set the username and password for the ILO user. (I had NO problems whatsoever with usernames less than 8 characters contrary to reports to this extent) You MUST enter a password again, regardless if it's been set in the past, then apply the settings (authenticate if necessary).
6) Shutdown, and disconnect the power once more to shutdown ILO.
7) Boot, make sure the XServe can login to itself at localhost with the ILO login name and password.
8) On another system on the same subnet, run:
$ ipmitool -H IPADDRESS -U USERNAME -P PASSWORD chassis status
(replacing IPADDRESS with the ILO's IP address and USERNAME and PASSWORD with the ones you set in step 5)
9) if you see something like:
System Power : on
Power Overload : false
Power Interlock : inactive
Main Power Fault : false
Power Control Fault : false
Power Restore Policy : always-on
Last Power Event : ac-failed
Chassis Intrusion : inactive
Front-Panel Lockout : inactive
Drive Fault : false
Cooling/Fan Fault : false
you should be fine, and Server Monitor on the remote system should connect fine.
The conclusion is that the key to getting this running is in enabling EN1, yet not giving it any TCP configuration.

New Intel Xserve rebooting under network load

We added an Xserve before the end of the year (2006), and we added an Xserve RAID to it just this last week.
During the period before the RAID was installed, the Xserve was used lightly as a file server, mostly just enough for me to move some files around the office and start to get to know OS X Server.
With the RAID attached we've started to try using the system as we intend, which is to have a large common file repository where common files can be shared out to the several clients on the GigE network.
So far the results have been disappointing, the Xserve has shut down and reboot itself a few times during periods of active use. I searched this forum and found a suggestion to run memtest and I have that tool running right now on the server. The system has 2GB of RAM installed.
Is RAM a good place to start with crashes that seem to be related to network load? How else can I troubleshoot?
I've not yet called Apple, I hoped to get more info before standing on line in the phone queue.

shuts down is it graceful or pow and off?
I'm not sure the exact answer. We were testing the migration to the Xserve and RAID when suddenly we noticed network connection to the server was gone. I went to the server room, the display on the Xserve was off and the two raided system drives were busy for a couple minutes, then the system rebooted.
Did you enable any other services when you attached
the RAID? Are you doing anything radically
different.
I think the RAID is the only change. I've been reading up on how to do Open Director, DHCP, DNS and that stuff, but I don't know enough yet to actually do them.
Odd that nothing is in the panic log. Do you have
redundant power supplies? One of those heading south
and no backup PS could cause an immediate shutdown.
The Xserve does not have redundant power. Is that an upgrade I can do myself?
Memtest is good for rooting out errors, but you
should run it at east 10 times or so just to be
sure.
I just started a 10 times test.
Later today I'm going to test getting the RAID out of the configuration. We are trying to replace two firewire drives connected to one of our systems with shares on the RAID so everyone can access the files, so I plan to connect those firewire drives to the Xserve and then share them from there. Seems like a good test.

Intel Xserve power problems

As of recently, I just started noticing a issue with powering on a new intel xserve. If the machine is running, using LOM and shut down works beautifully. After I shut it down, using LOM and the button works beautifully. If i attempt to turn it back on a few min later, it works fine.
If I leave it off for a day or so, even though the lights are on on the front of hte machine, LOM can see the server, but "power on" doesnt do anything, and hitting the front power button doesn't do anything. I have to unplug it from the UPS and replug it in for it to turn on.

Hi Forum folks.
I've had a 6-month (ish) Xserve doing the same thing. Every day, at least once a day, I'd get an email / SMS, saying the power supply or blower was having a momentary problem.
After shutting down the server, I pulled out the Power Supply Units, and checked them out.
Turns out, one of them had a slightly damaged heat sink (damage visible without opening the PSU). So, I swapped it for a spare I'd purchased. And then got the damaged unit (damaged internally at factory by the look of it) replaced by my Apple Reseller.
Note: the newer Intel XServes (early 2008) have a 750w PSU, compared to a 650w PSU, in the 2006 Intel XServes. The older PSUs fit in the newer Xserves, but they DO NOT function. (You'll get an error in Server monitor).

Intel Xserve No Activity Lights

Hey I'm trying to find out what could be wrong with our new Intel Xserve. It's fresh out of the box and set up on it's rack. We try to turn it on and it looks as if everything is well but the blue activity lights don't come on. We tried changing the startup method, and that doesn't work either. Anyone have any ideas?
BTW, this is my first post. Glad to be here!

Had exactly the same problem 3 weeks ago. I pulled the thing completely apart and rebuilt and reset all the hard reset buttons inside. Still no joy. Had a spare's kit so replaced the logic board and away it went perfectly. Spoke to Apple techincal and they replaced the logic board from my spare's kit. They offered to swap the entire machine but time was not on my side so this was the quicked way to solve the issue. I did spend 1 hour on the phone to them to check and they agreed with my prognosis. Interested to know if you get any further with yours than I did - fingers crossed for you. Guessing there was a dud batch or similar.

Intel Xserve

Does anyone know when the new Intel XSERVE's will come out and also when Os X Server will support Intel Processors

Apple have publicly stated that their entire Mac hardware line will migrate to Intel by the end of the year.
Anything more specific than that is pure conjecture. No one here is going to have any answer before Apple formally announce it. Sure, there are Apple employees active on these boards, but they all seem to like their jobs too much to reveal anything about unannounced products (assuming they know anything relevant - it's unlikely that anyone outside of the specific Server development teams know much at all.

Connect Intel Xserve and G4 Xserve?

I have a new Intel Xserve which I upgraded to from a G4 Xserve, which I think I'd like to keep and use to run FileMaker to serve a website. (Perhaps also use it for IP failover or backups, too, but first things first.)
How to configure them? Should I connect the G4 to the internet on en0 and to the router on en1? If the G4 is an OD replica, how does it talk to the Intel?
Any advice appreciated to point me in the right direction.

It all depends. If the router can also act as a reliable firewall, connect it to a switch and hook up both servers to the switch. You could then make whichever one an OD master and the other a Replica.
If the router isn't a real firewall, throw one in, connect to a switch, and then connect the servers to the switch.
If you're expecting the router to just be a roouter, and make your server the firewall, you're probably not taking the best approach and making you're computing life more difficult.
I don't mean to sound like a dope, but you should post back with a more complete description of your network, and what you can afford to put in your network. You can do a lot with an OS X Server or two if that's what you have, but there are better alternatives for some parts of your network.
