New internal HD, steps?
I am going to upgrade my RAM and Internal Hard Drive in my Macbook Pro (mid 2009,model # A1278). Currently, I am running snow leopard, but I would like to upgrade to Mountain Lion after getting the new internal HD.
I know how to remove & put in a hard drive, but are there any other steps I need to take before and after doing so?
I am not sure if I have to clone copy everything over to the new Hard Drive or if I can just put the current HD in an enclosure and then transfer only the files that I want into the new HD.
This is the hard drive that I am going to buy
Seagate Momentus Laptop HDD 1 TB SATA-300
If you're comfortable with the physcial installation procedure, all you really need to do is to transfer your data.
For that I recommend buying a small, inexpensive USB 2.0 enclosure (can be had for less than $8 at Amazon, although I've more of the $20 ones from OWC) and Carbon Clopy Cloner. You can install the drive before or after the clone. Just put the old or new drive in the enclosure, boot from the old drive, use Disk Utility to format the new drive and then use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the old drive to the new.
Pretty simple, really.

BTW - you can get a HGST 1TB 7200rpm drive from Newegg fo basically the same price - it would be faster than the 5400rpm drive that you've chosen.

Importing FROM external hard drive to new internal hard drive
How can I move my backed up Itunes library from my external hard drive to my new internal hard drive? I went through the steps listed on the support page, and imported the .xml playlist that I moved to the desktop. Now all my playlists (names only) are on Itunes, but there is no content. Help?

assuming you moved the whole iTunes folder to your new internal HD, try this:
launch iTunes with the options key pressed. this window will appear
click +choose library+ and navigate to the _iTunes library file_ on your internal HD.
any luck ? -
MacBook Pro doesn't recognise new Internal HDD
Hi there, I was hoping to get some help on this ...
I purchased a WD Scorpio Blue 750GB internal HDD and Apricorn kit and used SuperDuper to clone my current internal HDD. The clone copy worked fine and I can boot the OS via the new WD HDD if it’s connected via USB, but when I install it inside, the Macbook doesn’t recognise it and a folder with a blinking ‘?’ appears.
I’ve tried booting up from the disk utility on start up to hopefully select it and that doesn’t work either as it cannot find the HDD.
I’ve tried booting up from disk utility and using my Time Machine back-ups to copy over the new WD HDD but it doesn’t recognise the new internal HDD either.
I did format it before I cloned the new drive to be OS Extended (Journaled) but I didn’t make multiple partitions and not sure if this is a step I'm missing.
When I put the old HDD back in it boots fine.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Cheers, SamDidn't matter how many times I reformatted, partitioned mapped the HDD when it was connected externally, the issue was was the Super Duper clone. (even though it would start up as an external start up disk.)
Had to install the new HDD internally and reformat it from boot up through Disk Utility then do a restore from a previous Time Machine back up.
Works fine now, no issues. -
New internal hard drive and now cannot migrate from back up
Took my MacBook Pro in yesterday to have it looked and found out hard drive was failing. Had already backed up via Time Machine onto my iomega external drive before I took my laptop to Apple store. I have been backing up for several years to the iomega drive. Got my MacBook Pro back today, and brought it home--awesome work by Apple store, even had it done yesterday before I made it back home from dropping it off.
So, here is the deal, turned it on, went through the steps required and got to the migration part. It recognizes that my iomega drive is connected to the laptop as the icon is on my desktop. However, the migration assistance cannot find the drive and just keeps spinning. Any suggestions before I set up another genius bar appointment?
Thanks

Surely you mean you used +Setup Assistant+ or +Migration Assistant+ to transfer the data? Or a "clone" via CarbonCopyCloner, SuperDuper, or Disk Utility?
Now it appears TM wants to ADD the contents of my new internal hd to those already backed up(another 220 gb).
Yes. As posted, to TM it's a new, different drive. TM will back it up. You cannot prevent it.
I wonder if I need to format the new drive and start over??
Yes, that's probably your best bet. -
Hi, I just put a new internal hard disk to my MacBook after formattimg it and I don't know how to install the OS X? Any help please
Be sure you have prepared the new drive correctly:
Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
When formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Complete the OS X installation. -

best regards!Hi,
2. Order Master Data
2.1 Define Order types (KOT2_OPA)
IMG Controlling  Internal Orders Order Master Data  Define Order Types
An Internal order is created under an Order type. An order type is used for storing various control parameters and various defaults while creating an internal order. It is used for classifying various types of internal orders according to usage for e.g. Real orders for trade fairs, real orders for Capital investment measure, Statistical orders for motor vehicle expenses.
The order type is client-specific, which means that every order type can be used in all controlling areas. A number range is assigned to the internal order type.
Click on New Entries
Take a drop in the field Order category and select 01
Enter
Update the following
Give Order Type :- Z810
Description :- Traders First Real order type
Object Class :- OCOST overhead
Reference Order :- Collective order without automatic goods movement
Residence time 1 :- 12 months
Residence time 2 :- 1 month
Check Commit Management and Check Integrated Planning
Activate CO Partner Updating -You activate this so that allocations between orders and other CO objects (cost centers, projects, etc.), the partner information is retained and whether for each order a totals record should be written.
Save
Click on Field Selection
Here you can hide the various fields or make it as required entry or only display or available for input. Thus while creating internal order only those fields are displayed and available for input.
Click Save
2.2 Maintain Number Ranges for Orders (KONK)
IMG Controlling  Internal Orders  Order Master Data Maintain Number Ranges for Orders
Number Range needs to be assigned to the internal order type. Number range can be internal or external. In Internal numbering system automatically assigns a number from the given number range. In external numbering the user has to manually assign the number from the given number range.
We will configure internal number range for our internal order type Trade Fair
Click on Group Maintain (From the menu bar)
Click on Group  Insert (From the menu bar)
Update the following
From Number: - 910000000000
To Number: - 919999999999
Click in plus icon at the left bottom of the screen
Click Save
You will find internal order type Z810 in not assigned
You need to assign the order type to the group we created above. Proceed as follows:-
Position the cursor on: - Z810 Trade Fair real order type
Click on Arrow Z810 Trade Fair real order type note it turns blue
Select Check mark Z810 A ltd India fair real order
Click Element Group
The internal order type Z910 moves under the group which can be seen as follows:-
Z810: A Ltd India Trade fair real order / Z810 Trader Fair real order type.
Click Save
Select: - Z810: A Ltd India Trade fair real order / Z810 Trader Fair real order type.
Click on Pencil icon.
Click Back arrow.
2.3 Define Model Orders
IMG Controlling Internal Orders Order Master Data Screen Layout
Define Model Orders
Model orders are not orders in the commercial sense, but serve merely as references for creating "normal" orders. Model orders contain default values for the orders in an order type. The Model order is assigned as the reference order in the order type.
When you create a new order, all the fields active in the relevant order type are copied from the model order to the new order.
Example
You want to settle all your marketing orders to the same sales cost center. Stipulate the cost center as the default value in the model order for marketing orders.
When you create a new marketing order, the system defaults this cost center. If you want to settle the order to a different cost center, you can overwrite the default cost center in the orders.
We will create a model order with some defaults and assign it to the Trade fair internal order type
Click Create CO Model Order
Press F4 and select ($$) 03 model order
Click on the master data and update the following
Order: - $$$ Z81000001
Description text: - A Limited Trade affair
Click Save
Assign this model order to the order type Z810
Update the reference order with the model order number $$$Z81000001 in the reference order field
Click on save.

Could not see my photos after Installing new internal drive
Aaarrgghhh! I installed a new internal drive to keep data separate from applications, transferred all the data to the new drive and now all the work I did in sorting thousands of photos has gone, same with iTunes. Does anytone know how to restore my categories of photos and tunes?
thanksBefore anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff: What version of iPhoto. What version of the Operating System. Details. What were you doing when the problem arose? Did it ever work properly? Step-by-step descriptions of how you got to this issue. If something doesn't work, are there error messages? What happens when you try to do this thing? And what steps have you tried already to solve the issue. With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that a helper is simply guessing. With information, s/he may be able to get your issue resolved sooner. -
Cloning HD to New Internal Hard Drive
I recently purchased a 120GB internal hard drive to replace my maxed out 40GB factory hard drive in my iBook. In hopes of avoiding having to purchase a new Firewire external hard drive in order to copy a disk image to the external drive and boot from it with the new internal drive installed, I decided to purchase a 2.5" hard drive enclosure. A few days ago, I cloned a copy of my hard drive to the new 120GB drive inside the external enclosure. The new hard drive now appears with the same icon as my current hard drive when the enclosure is connected to my computer via the USB port. All of my contents appear to be intact and are usable. I'm at the point where I would like to install the new drive, but I feel like I'm taking a step in the dark from here on out, because I don't know what I will be dealing with or what will be required to start up the computer with the new hard drive installed and the disk image loaded on the hard drive. Will I need to reinstall the OS through the recovery discs that came with the laptop initially? I'm not sure where to go from here. I've been all over the internet looking for someone else who has tried something like this, and I haven't had any luck in my search. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the welcome.
I cloned it using SuperDuper. I haven't checked to see if it is bootable through the external enclosure yet, because my intention is to install the drive internally as soon as I know that I won't have any surprises when I try to boot from it after the install. I was also under the impression that PowerPC chips will not allow you to boot from an external drive using a USB connection. Should I go ahead and check if the drive is bootable, anyway? Thanks again. -
Backing up images on external hard drive and restoring to new internal driv
I recently purchased a new external hard drive and a new internal hard drive. Before installing the new internal drive, I backed up the old internal drive on the external drive. Then I installed the new internal drive to my Macbook Pro. However, when I tried to access and print my Aperture images on the new internal drive, I received an error message saying "versions with unavailable master images cannot be printed." I clicked on 'show referenced files," but couldn't determine how to recover my master images. I checked the forum and under "referenced files go offline after restore from a backup" it said to go to "File>manage referenced files" but nothing else. How can I recover my master images? Please help - I have nearly 6000 images that are lost without recovering the master images. And no, I was ultra stupid in not placing everything in a vault = but I'm relatively new to Mac OS and thought a backup would be sufficient. Thank!
The volume name of the new hard drive needs to be the same as the old hard drive - rename it if you have to - then they should be fine.
If you cannot seem to make this work then you will have to reconnect them with locate referenced files under the file menu. Select all the files that are disconnected before going into the dialog.

I am migrating to a new iMac via TimeMachine back up. My iPhoto libraries are on an external drive. Both drives are backed up on Time Machine. I'd like to migrate only the old internal hard drive data to the new internal Drive and then just plug in iPhoto library drive to the new iMac. This would save having to transfer several hundred GBs of data. Will this work using Set Up Assistant?
Your user account on the new Mac must have a different UID than on the old one. See the pink box in Problems after using Migration Assistant for an explanation.
You'll need to change the permissions on the iPhoto library on the external HD. Do a Get Info on it, click the padlock at the bottom of the Sharing & Permissions section of the Info window and enter your Admin password.
Then click the plus sign, select the user account you want on the next screen, and click Select. Then change Read only to Read & Write for that user via the little arrows. Finally, click the "gear" icon and select Apply to enclosed items. That may take a few mintutes on a large library. -
How do I reboot my Macbook pro 2011 to a new internal hard drive?
I had to get a new internal hard drive and I can't afford to pay some one to do it for me. So I was wondering how do I install the operating system on to the hard drive?
ThanksSince we don't know which MBP you have or what OS was initially installed on it, try this. Start up the Mac and hold down the Command and "R" keys. If you have an internet connection and if the MBP came with Lion installed, you should be able to boot into Internet Recovery. From there, you can download Lion from Apple's servers and install it. That's assuming the new HD has already been installed and formatted (you can format it yourself using the Disk Utility that's available in Internet Recovery).

I justrecently had to replace my internal HD on my iMac. Before doing it, I backed up my 2 iWeb Sites (the Domain File) onto my external HD.
Now I have a new Internal HD on my iMac.
When I open my domain file located on my external HD, iWeb opens. Now I'd like to save the file back onto my internal HD.
How do I save my 2 web sites that I now see on the left back onto my internal HD. (When I click on "File", "Save", it just saves it again on the external HD, because it's reading the file from the external HD?)
Thanks....
BrianYou need to copy the domain.sites file from the external hard drive into your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder on the new hard drive. If there is no iWeb folder in the Applicaiton Support folder create one.
Be sure it's your home library that you're working in.
Happy Holidays -
My ipod touch 4th generation no longer holds it's charge for more than 40mins from full power, think it needs a new internal battery but have no idea how to go about this and am no longer covered by my guarantee. Can anyone advise me on what's best? Thanks in advance
Using the battery level meter in this manner is comparable to using your car's fuel gauge to calculate miles per gallon. The only thing that matters is the total amount of operating time from full charge to auto-shutdown.
Use an Apple wall-mount charger. Do NOT use a computer's USB port. Then, operate it normally until auto shut-down (ignore any low level alerts that may appear). An irony is that doing that test to determine the total operating time is also the exact procedure necessary to calibrate the battery level meter.
I'm not claiming that you do not have a problem. I am stating, however, that we don't yet know whether or not a battery problem exists.
According to Apple:
Use Your iPod Regularly
For proper reporting of the battery’s state of charge, be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).
Elsewhere, Apple elaborates and explains that two half-discharges (or four quarter-discharges, etc.) equals one full discharge. -
My time machine backup (on external hdd) doesn't see my new internal HDD.
I just installed a new HDD and RAM in my mid-09 MBP. When I try and restore from a time machine backup on an external drive, I only get the option to install it on the other partition on that drive - my new internal drive doesn't even appear as an option. Could it be because the backup is from lion but my os disc is leopard?

I'm having a hard time booting from external drive to rewrite everything on new internal drive
I got this Powerbook used w/o any startup or software disks. It has some valuable software on it. It is over 7 years old and I want to put the system and all software and other files on a new internal hard drive. I bought two Western Digital drives to accomplish this but have been unable so far. I have used SuperDuper and Carbon Copy Cloner to successfully write everything onto the external drive after partitioning it Apple Partition Map. Neither Other World Computing (where I got the drives) or Western Digital have been of any use at all with advice. When I have the new clean drive in the Mac and the external connected by firewire and turn the Mac on while holding down the Option key all I get is a blank screen with a circular arrow and a right-pointing arrow and a mouse pointer. Clicking on either does nothing. If it is not possible to do it this way then can you suggest an alternate route?
My system: Powerbook G4 OSX 10.5.8 1.5GHz PowerPC.
New internal hard drive: WD 160GB Scorpio Blue.
External drive: same but the connector is for use only in an enclosure.
Wiring available: firewire or USBI have been making a flash form lately that works fine. The
form validates, focuses on first field on access, tab focuses,
displays error messages, you can use your enter key to reset ot
submit it, and of course sends the data to a server (script, php,
or any script you have).
I can send you the complete fla file if you wish. Email me
please.
